My mother talked of such holiday celebrations in her hometown of Ortonville,Mn. She was born in 1918 and said that at the front of the parade would be a wagon of the oldest men she ever saw. They would be wearing there best suits and holding little American flags. They were all members of the Grand Army of the Republic. They were all veterans of the civil war. Union soldiers. Her grandfather was on that wagon. She was so proud. He died in 1923 when Mom was 5. His obituary says that the local national guard came and shot rifles in the air at his funeral. It was a pleasure watching this entertaining family movie. The young man was dependable, responsible, never lied, learned quickly, and was kind to animals. He was a good example for children to view. The story takes place in a small town filled with kind people who had to tolerate one rich, selfish, farmer.
Enjoyed this movie, its kind of challenging life way back before. Our great great grand parents are still the best in terms of disciplined with respect people.
Marvin one of my favorite actors. Hollywood has gone forever, nothing but trashy crowd. Marvin is a lost generation of true acting with wholesome movies and this one proves what’s missing today.
Well I never - what a wonderful, life lesson movie this was. Life was so much simpler then compared to the hell that we live in nowadays. Fantastic roles by all the cast, I loved each and everyone of them for their differing quirkinesses. Thanks so much for this little ray of light in our dull world. xxx
I'm happy you have good memories of your younger years. No matter how tough life is, it helps to have good friends and a good mentor to to help you succeed.
That's a nice buggy, I want one, and the horse as well. This show is loaded with many great characters. We had to pump our water when I was a kid, usually had to prime it first. I was sent to a Boys Ranch later, but I had a love and good ways with horses, so I was sent to harness them, lead them in and saddle them for group rides. Any movie with a horse in it is a good movie.
This movie is at the top of the list, a truely American film. If only we had learned A fraction of what the people of Delphi did. The world would be a much better place to live in.
They don’t make movies of such anymore. It brings back the nostalgia of the good old days where common folks were still uncomplicated, decent and honest folks.
This is a truly nice film from the time of such Americana. The actual times and backgrounds were probably not so great, but for the film industry this was a really nice bit of yesteryear. Clean, neat and tells a story.
I have my great great gramma's dresser drawers and a few other furniture from both sides of my parents. Its been tough holding on to them. However, they are 100's of years old compared to the crap they build & sell overpriced that don't last even a decade. Heavey to move but I'm 62 now & if my kids & g-kids use & care for them they'll be around another century. I imagine what it was like to have only 2-3 outfits and sleeping clothes plus a coat hat & a sweater. Dresser has only 3 drawers. Harder life in different ways, and Lord, so much simpler.
Especially now??? Nah... You need to study a little history... These are the best times ever!!! Ever heard of WW2??? 1?.. The sixties and seventies even... Much more tumultuous than today.. Not to mention all we have that didn't exist in the "golden age" of the past... Nah..
The best way to stay innocent of this world and to be a kind and thoughtful person is to familiarize ourselves with the Bible and apply its principles. That's what many people of all races and backgrounds tried to do 120 plus years ago. Nobody was perfect then. But it's much less so now.
