- Hi everyone! In this video I talk all about my experience and thoughts on getting an American Wave/Perm! I got my hair permed Sept. 25, 2019 and these are my thoughts since then.
UPDATE:
Rod sizes were 1.5in-1in and the different colors match the different sizes of the rods!
I cover the process, the care, damage to hair, recommended routines, etc. I know a lot of people have opinions on perms - but trust me, they have evolved since the '90s lol! If you have any questions for me, please make sure to leave them in the comments so I can answer them!

Why is getting a perm a touchy subject?
I remember in 2000s people thought perms were 'lame', from references to back when they were popular 2-3 decades back. I thought they were crazy(ive wanted one for years, just never felt comfortable with the hairstylist i would talk to... The last one told me she would first start with cutting almost 2 feet off of my hair, I almost cried-I love my longer hair), but i guess it went 'out of trending'. Also, some people may have had terrible experiences getting a perm or trying themselves too and then messing up🤷 so that could be touchy? Maybe?
I have type 4 coily hair and got my first relaxer when I was like 4 or 5 (of course this wasn't my choice) but I say this to say that people change their hair texture and color for different reasons, we all get tired of our hair from time to time. My hair has been in its natural state for 12 years now. ( while I love my texture, it's extremely time consuming and I struggle with it a lot) So every now and then I blow dry it, wear wigs, now I'm thinking about relaxing it again. People should just let others be.
Thank you for making such a thorough video about this process. I think it's "new" for a lot of younger stylists who weren't trained to do perms, so it's helpful to have this info as a customer! Your curls turned out amazing.
You did good researching how to mange wavy/curly hair, people with straight hair don't know how difficult texture hair can be and the amount of time that it takes to take care of it .I like how your perm come out, it looks very natural.I have natural wavy/curly hair, a mixture of 2b/2c with some 3a , I always get complements on my hair .
Thank you! I definitely wanted to do lots of research to know exactly what was needed. When people say they want to get a perm so it simplifies their hair styling process, I always point out its way more work! Your hair sounds like my dream hair texture 😍
💀 yes I understand and know. I have family with wavy/curly and did research. Have tried to see if my hair did much since after high school it turned a bit wavy
Your hair looks so beautiful! It suits you so well! I’ve been contemplating between the body wave perm and a digital perm ☺️ we’ll see though, since I feel like I’m going to miss my straight hair after getting a perm 😆

I’m getting my first perm Thursday I am scared because I dyed my hair months ago it hasn’t been 12 months though... but my hair is pretty healthy & always has been. Is an American wave and body wave perm the same thing or how do they differ?

Great question. I have a lot of hair and it's pretty long so I know it will be on the higher end, but still doable since one treatment lasts a long time.

The only thing that would make it crunchy is hair product, like gel! My hair was still soft when there was nothing in it. And with gel, you’d just “scrunch the crunch” meaning you’d take your hands and scrunch to break up the gel cast. And then your hair wouldn’t have that feeling. I have videos of me styling my curly hair that might be helpful!

I feel so dumb right now 😂I have wavy hair but it only looks good on the first day because if i dont put product in it doesn't last and if i put product in it gets sticky and weighs the waves down. The only time it looks like i want it to is when ive been to a lake or the beach. So i thought a perm sets the waves in a way that doesn't require me to go through the same struggle with products etc. Oh maaan.
I have naturally perm semi curly hair. I think getting a perm would define my hair more?
Yes I’ve heard of people with curly hair getting perms to make it more defined or change the curl pattern!
You hair looks great! just ran into you channel, did your hair feel dry immediately after the perm or did it feel hard?
Thanks! I noticed my scalp got dry after a while but not my hair. Hair didn't feel hard either
This was so helpful and your hair looks beautiful! I am definitely checking out your other videos and IG. My one question is how bad was the smell of the chemicals? I am just trying to work out if it smells very strong - or lasts long then the 3 days - as I can get migraines
Pretty strong the first day, not gonna lie! But it’s hard for me to say because I’m used to it now that I’ve done it multiple times! If you tie your hair back afterwards and spray some dry shampoo or maybe even a light hair perfume, it might help? Maybe halfway through the second day or third day, it’s very faint. And after maybe two washes, the smell goes away completely.
@@ByKristinaStudio thanks Kristina for your advice! It sounds like I will manage it ok if the smell fades after a few days/washes and may just notice it initially (but could be worth it). I previously had my hair permanently straightened and that smelled to high heaven for quite a while so was curious about the experience with perms. You will be my example photo of what I am after to the hairdresser as your hair is beautiful. Thanks for putting out this content and answering questions as it is hard to find information that is relevant to western style perms.

What products do you use? Such as shampoo/conditioner and styling products. Also, do you use a diffuser

Hey! Lots of questions! 1) Where is Hair Piece salon? Does Savannah or the salon have an instagram? 2) what were the specific sizes of rods that she used on your hair? I am located in Augusta, GA and I am desperately trying to get a stylist to give me a perm EXACTLY like this one and my local stylists need help!
Her instagram is @savanna.hairpeace but the salon is currently closed until further notice because of the quarantine! I don’t remember what size rods these were, but if you reach out and let her know I sent you, Im sure she can track that info down!

Who are the people upset about other people getting perms?? I know a lot of black women have strong opinions about other black chemically straightening their hair but that’s a completely different situation and issue. I’ve never heard of anyone being upset about someone with straight hair getting a perm. Good lord if people are upset about other people getting perms then they really need to get a life, 😒.

I wish I have straight hair :( I hate my kinky curly hair and I’m asian. It’s a lot of work to manage my hair, I have a lot of hair.
But you have some highlights. Thought it’s not allowed to have a perm. Because I also have some highlights and they won’t perm me 🤣

A lot of places require a consultation to check out your hair to see if it's healthy enough! The place I went to analyzed my hair first since I had highlights. But I hadn't highlighted my hair for maybe a year before I got a perm! So my hair was healthy by that point.
Do they roll the top of the hair I just watched one where they were rolling the hair and I left the top straight is that usual?
Did you get your highlights before or after the perm? I find almost every stylist does not want to perm my hair since I have highlights. How long in between did you wait?
Before! I think I had gotten my balayage over a year prior to my perm. I had to do a consultation before my perm to make sure my hair was in healthy condition because my stylist said she wouldn’t do the perm and risk the integrity of my hair if it was damaged

Thank you for making this video I’ve been wanting a perm! I was doing a little research on it and some people were saying it can damage your hair roots and scalp is that true?
My scalp did get more dry after the treatment and I used to have a super oily scalp! I think curly hair naturally is drier though so I just do an oil treatment on my scalp before I wash & it helps a lot. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily damaged bc all of my new growth is healthy

Nope, I was going to do a separate video but the interest wasn't really there at the time.
Hair is just another accessory. Playing with style, curl, color, cut and/or length is all about how you feel about yourself at any given time. Most women change their hair the way they change their clothes. What's the big deal?

Who cares what people think lol you shouldn’t have to defend yourself over a perm. I hate people sometimes 😂 this new gen is ludicrous.
My hair is so straight when you said if you curl your hair it lasts a couple days I thought you were gonna say hours 🫠 it’ll last maybe 1 hour for me with hairspray
For some reason it can't hold curl as long anymore. Might be because my hair is just so heavy now but idk! Only lasts maybe a day before I have to touch up again
