This here is a timeless 60's (1968) classic, it's absolutely one of the funkiest instruments ever recorded, in music history, R.I.P. Mr. Clifford James Nobles, b.k.a. Cliff Nobles...

They were all exceptional musicians, as well as producers, arrangers, and songwriters as well. They were true musicians that played with so much passion and they took their craft very seriously.

@jerrylakey6270, WELCOME HOME BROTHER,. My brother and I were both in during Vietnam. I was NOT over there. My brother went twice at his request. He was past the DMZ in North Vietnam. He made it back, however, sadly we lost him to cancer due to Agent Orange. Glad you made it. Rest In Peace David R. Hood, miss you brother.

I was born in 1968, but my Dad use to play this song a lot on his 8 track player in his 1969 Chevrolet Impala convertible or his Zenith Hi-fi reel-to reel. He even use to play that song on 45 rpm on his record player, I remembered hearing the static from the needle on his record player. That brought back my childhood memories, those where the good ol days!

I'm constantly amazed when it comes to how many records they played on...and not just Philadelphia Int'l,Gamble,Neptune or Golden Fleece labels either. Joe Simon,Wilson Pickett,BB King,Dusty Springfield,The Whispers,Little Anthony & The Imperials,Barbara Mason,Johnny Moore,The Epsilons and countless others. Then they recorded as a band under several aliases as The Brothers Of Hope,Salsoul Orchestra and The Electric Indian.

And let's not forget that they also played behind Jerry Butler ("Hey Western Union Man", "Never Give You Up", "Only The Strong Survive", "Moody Woman", etc.). And though many mistake him for Curtis Mayfield, they also played behind William DeVaughan on the classic "Be Thankful (For What You've Got") & the subsequent album. Their credits run deep!

+jasper bradley Hi Jasper, hope you are well. I have been researching a song called "It really hurts me girl" by the Carstairs. It was recorded in Jessie's studio Future Gold in North Philly in 73, and remixed there my Tom Moulton who's version changed "Northern Soul" to "Modern Soul" in the UK. A major offshoot of late 70s dance floor fillers. Anyways, the song was a complete enigma in the US, and only ever released as a promo white label vinyl on "Red Coach" records distributed by Chess. I have spoken with Tom regarding the track but he does not know the identity of the drummer. Is there any chance you are still in touch with Jesse, is he still alive? Or do you know if the studio log archives may have been saved somewhere. I can't find any info on the studio anymore and the number is disconnect, so I'm guessing that is long since out of business too. Im sure you know Jessie's most notorious artist collar was with Cliff Nobles. I managed to find out that his drummer was called Tommy Soul. But cannot confirm he played on that track. Any light you may be able to shed i would really appreciate. Thanks so much.

As a bassist for over 50 years, the bass/drummer jam in the middle taught me how to be part of a tight rhythm section. Of course I have played, and heard, a great deal of music since, but this was a primer of my musical DNA.

I'm 54, graduated in 1978, we played this in our marching band as well, great song, fun song, real crowd pleaser! We marched with one bass drum back in the day, 8 snares, 1 cymbal player and no mallet instruments, this was definitely a fun tune to play, they let the drum section solo for 4-8 measures! The song was released in 1968, it was only 10 years old when we played it.

Each summer, from 1968 thru the very latter '70s, Philly, and the entire Delaware Valley, "The Horse" received almost constant airplay, on WFIL 56-AM, WIBBAGE, WCAU-FM, and local, suburban stations. It always kicked off with "See You in September"(The Happenings), in late May, and was 'amplified', by Ed Hurst, and the Steel Pier Show". Great, but trying times...
