As to using cardboard, it works well. There is an nonprofit company that makes adaptive furniture for special needs children out of cardboard. This may be the best thing I've ever seen on youtube!!! I am totally headed to Dollar tree!! I have made beams for my living room, trim for doors and windows, columns, and now Shelves!! From foam core and cardboard!! Guess what - no one knows!😊😊
OH MY GOSH! Please send me pictures of your beams!!!! That is amazing! You can share them to my Crafty Organizer page on Facebook: facebook.com/groups/730125317461615/
Thank you sooooo much. I live in an RV. I have converted the "bunk beds" into storage area, but I need some light weight shelving for my arts and crafts, as well as canned goods. This is going to be perfect with all the canned goods on the bottom shelves. Can't wait to start building, though I may add quarter rounds to the back and sides of each shelf.
Mam, I am watching this on Feb 23rd, 2024. I live in a tiny tiny flat but I do need a small piece of furniture to hold my rubber stamps, ribbons, twine and a few other craft items. I have one small place left in my place to have a storage cabinet but, all are too wide that I see at the Goodwill. I have Surebond glue sticks on hand and Stanley packing tape, only need the foam core. This is so AMAZING! You such a unique individual creative person and you have a great personality for working with others. So happy I have seen this tonight. I am hoping to buy a small home by the end of this coming summer and to have light weight furniture to move is always a plus too. I think your bookcase would be beautiful with a nice pretty peal and stick wall paper just on the outside or just in the inside. This is a real game changer for me if that's the right wording. Living on a budget too this will not break the bank. Blessings, Rebekah in VA
Hi, Rebekah! So glad you liked this!!! And, if you are covering anyway... you could use cardboard - with so many boxes being thrown away all of the time, you could save more money by using discarded boxes for this project. Let me know how it goes and thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. I found myself just as excited as you as you were loading the bookcase. I love using foam core for storage. Built two really smaller versions months ago to store my boxes of tea on my tea bar. Since I drink Twinings tea I call them the “Twinings towers”. I’m rearranging my craft/bedroom and will be making these to add for my storage.
I am super excited to do this I truly was checking prices for the bookshelf with 3 shelves at Walmart and they are $29. Something for each one and now I can make a few of these save a boat load of money and have fun doing it so Thank you you have been so much help I'm trying to get organized on a budget while dealing with rheumatoid arthritis and you have given me so many ideas and a positive outlook so THANK YOU AGAIN 🤗😁🤗😁🤗😁🤗😁🤗😁🤗😁🤗
What a super cool idea to build your own foam shelf. I was very happy to see the weight testing; your excitement had me clapping too!! Love your positive energy! thanks for the tutorial. 🙂
I used to work at a co. that made store fixtures. They weight tested to point of collapse. Then guaranteed 200# less. But that means you'd have to make 2. As for using cardboard, I used to have a book on making nomadic furniture. Much of it was cardboard, though not focused on storage, their techniques would transfer. Can't remember exact title, nomadic was in it. I donated it after I bought my house.
In college we had an assignment to make a chair, that can hold an adult, completely out of cardboard and nothing else to hold it together. Everyone in the class came up with something different, style wise, but ever chair held.
I would be dancing around your craft room in excitement and celebration with you!! I’m sooo excited about this! Thank you, thank you!!!From a fellow organizing and bargain geek.🤓🥳🥰
This makes me excited, so much easier and cheaper than having to build book shelves. I can see this being covered in some awesome contact paper too. Thank you!!!!

Norrine this is absolutely outstanding👏👏👏 Your excitement, giddiness and encouragement also equally outstanding!!! Keep up the great work and thank you so much ❤️😀
This is brilliant! Thanks to your previous videos on foam core, I've started making custom organization items out of foam core instead of searching for things that will fit where I need them.
I’m pretty excited about this! I bought 20 (or maybe it was 25-can’t remember now) sheets of foam core from DT for 25 cents each as they had been water-damaged. The foam was in perfect condition but the paper was a little water-stained in one corner. So if I make this, no, WHEN I do I can cover the water stains with contact paper to make it prettier and stronger. I am not sure what I will use it for, but looking at the shallow shelf behind you with the gutter, I’m imagining using those in there somehow, stair-stepped (so maybe three gutters per shelf) and use them to hold all my ribbons and washis? I also use a TON of funfoam and flipflops foam for crafting for my grandkids and Children’s Church so that might make for interesting-and-yet-perfect lighter-weight storage for foam, and for the bottom shelf I can use more foam to create several mini-shelves for paper storage? I will have to see about that, unless you have a tutorial for that? This is a fantastic Idea, what a terrific idea Norrine! How cute are you with your giddiness!!??
Love this! I've been picking up a few sheets of craft foam from Dollar Tree here and there. I crochet and have tons of yarn. I live in a very small apartment and need to go 'up' with my storage. This will be perfect for my yarn and I can see all the colors! Thank you for the inspiration!
Wonderful! I'd love to see pictures when you are done! You can share them to my Crafty Organizer page on Facebook: facebook.com/groups/730125317461615/
You have the most amazing organizational ideas...ever! Thank you bunches for all your ideas. I hope you have a half way decent day. I've been sick for 27 years with FMS ME/CFS, OA, RA, multiple internal issues and surgeries and tons of joint replacements and corrective surgeries. I've actually had 27 surgeries as well. I do so know what you go through. God bless you for it and all the work you do and to teach us on top of it. You are amazing!
I was holding my breath every time you added a container to the shelves! Then I was laughing, with you not at you, about how excited you were! As you were filling up the shelves I was thinking how pretty it could be with contact paper! Anxious to see how it holds up! I will be checking your facebook page in a few days. Thanks for sharing!
Great idea. I have made mini shelves to house my inkpads. Each holds 18 inkpads and slides in sideways onto a deeper shelf. I just pull the ‘unit’ out like taking a book off the shelf and can take it to my crafting table easily 😊
If I were to make one for myself, I’d put three of the furring strips on each shelf and double the shelf thickness. Because I know me, I’d end up shoving something else on it and boom. I know adding more strips and doubling the foam core board would up the price. You really did a great job with this. Never would have thought foam core would hold so much.
This is brilliant. I have made many shelves from cardboard. BIG SHELVINGUNITS! Held together with flour glue and spots of hot glue. I would use the hot glue to hold the pieces together while the flour glue dried. It is very strong! I never though about foam board! I will now make them with cardboard, and COVER with foam board, to make the look so much nicer! Thank you for this brilliant idea!
Honestly I didn't think it would work, but so great that it did!! Shelving is so expensive, this shelf I'm sure is something everyone can afford. Will be saving video to make some for sure. Thank you Norrine! Have a Blessed week.
I'm excited just because you're excited. Now let's talk about that storage. I'll just say, I spent 75 dollars on a cube storage, for a third of that I could probably cover a wall. You are so clever! Love that so much. Thanks for sharing your latest invention. 😁
That is a really good idea! Since they are light, they will be easy to take along. Here's a thought: to save space in your vehicle, you could create several individual foam boxes using Norrine's method, and make them graduated in size so that they will nest inside one another. When you want to stack them up, put the smaller ones on top of the larger ones and clip them together with binder clips.
You know what this is perfect for? Fiber for spinning and felting. It is light, you can have all the colors and types of wool out where you can see them and if you run an elastic or even a piece of fiber board across about 1/3 the way up, you could move it around without taking everything off the shelf. So if you are spinning multicored yarn, you could bring the yarn outside with you, it will be secure in the shelf as you spin outside, enjoying the sunshine. You can change around your storage without moving everything off the shelf. I retro fitted thr trunk I have with foam shelves, and I will send you photos when it is done.
That's amazing!!!! Yes, PLEASE send me pictures when you are done!!!! You can share them to my Crafty Organizer page on Facebook: facebook.com/groups/730125317461615/
Not only strong but looks very sharp too :) Now, imagine, if you carefully cover it with contact paper you can make it match your room and reinforce all the joins too. It would never come apart. You made it look so easy I just may give it a shot!
Don’t blame you about getting so excited, I would have too! Awesome! Now I want to make one for scrapbook 12 x 12 paper! Wish you would do a video of making that !! 🤞🏻
I’ve recently found you and wish I’ve known you my whole life. I honestly feel like you can change my life. It’s like this channel was made for me ❤️ plus your being so happy and excited over this shelf being strong is so adorable!
I am 'DANCIN' AROUND MY CRAFT ROOM, TOO !' LOVIN' this....so many crazy ideas I have for this DIY- fabric storage, doll wardrobe......THANK YOU ~ loving ya from BC Canada 😘
OMGoodness, I became a fan of your channel with the gutter system, then the paperclip holder and now the bookcase for only $5 my crafting space is going to be so organized and at the fraction of the cost of buying office furniture. I love you! Thank you for all your affordable tutorials!
I am in awe!😧😲 What a great idea!!! Such an inexpensive way to create and have storage shelves in a craft room. I love the idea of using contact paper too. Thank you sooo much for sharing such a great idea❣️ I agree with what someone else commented on….your expressions are so cute when you get excited and nervous. You’re truly genuine and that’s a beautiful trait to have. God bless you😇
Noreen, you are totally amazing!!!!! What excitement you create in me about making something SO needed but on a little budget! I can do this! I have already made 4 smaller vertical ones like you showed before to hold the spices I buy at the Mennonite store, and they work perfectly. (The spices come in the small round, flat plastic containers like Feta cheese comes in.) I stack 5 on top of each other in each. I have all my most uses baking spices in one, my most used cooking herbs and spices in one, and two more holding lesser or seasonal spices. That works so well I KNOW I can do this for my stamping supplies. Thank you SO much! You are so appreciated!
That sounds amazing!!!! I'd love to see pictures of your spice storage! You can share them to my Crafty Organizer page on Facebook: facebook.com/groups/730125317461615/
I'll keep you posted. The other organizers I've made from foam are all holding up... I've only lost one - but it was sitting in the sun... and on a day that hit 103, the glue melted. LOL
I love this idea but I'm curious as well, especially if you are taking weight off and on a shelf repeatedly. The weakest part is the glue at the joints. If you upgrade and get the thicker foam core, it will be even more solid. It's tough to cut, but it's strong stuff. I've made drawer dividers that are close to 2 yrs old that have held up well, but have had a few places where the glue came undone over the past year. I live in Texas where our humidity and temperature fluctuates. Not sure if that caused it or not. I love the concept and am looking to adapt this for my closet overhaul. (edited for clarity - ha!)
@@kimatlastlooks2915 Yes & Foamboard !. I use a water activated, brown packing tape, with the reinforced fiberglass thread. Then decoupage over it with patterned paper. I just surrendered to the humidity issues in Florida and went with an adhesive that agrees w damp conditions.
Genius washi tape holder. I’m imagining this with washi that matches my project boxes! I am a real huge fan of napkins! Napkins by season, my different bottles of decoupage and glue I use. How pretty !!!
Your excitement is infectious and I found myself smiling. It's a great idea that I will keep in mind for the next round of reorganization in my craft room. You were absolutely right when you said that organizing never ends, it has to adapt to what going on in your life right now.
Your.excitement and happiness is contagious! This is super genius! And, just a note (not promoting but if access to Dollar Tree is not available), Wal-Mart sells foam core.
Hi ....love this. I made a smaller last year. I'd to make another but skinnier and wider to fit between my clay station desk and the wall, but on wheels to slide in and out of that small space. The storage is for my rolls of wax paper, plastic wrap, dollar tree contact paper rolls, etc. Will send you a pic of my original and my new one! Sooooo excited.lol.
After thinking about this - I realized I have a definite need - I have become obsessed with making gnomes - big gnomes - little gnomes - holiday gnomes - and I needed a unit to display my gnomes but it is a narrow space - so i can adjust the dimensions of this and make a perfect fit - also adjust the height of the shelves for the size of my gnomes - thank you - probably saved me $25 or more trying to find a narrow shelving unit :D
Rosemary Miller - i also love a bargain! Norrine always provides such amazing ideas, and they are budget friendly. If you have any old yardsticks they can be cut to your specific needs. Years ago I found a bunch of yardsticks in a Thrift Store that had been used to stir paint. All numbers were covered but they were in a rusty can labeled Free Firewood. I knew I would eventually find a purpose - this will be the perfect one. Also paint stir-sticks are usually free. I have quite a collection of stir-sticks. Furring sticks are not expensive but I prefer to limit trips due to health issues.
@@rosemarymillar5458 Remember you can also cut down a bookcase for your gnomes like Norine cut the one down for her office. I see a lot of them given away for nothing.
You are all so quick with the amazing feedback!!!!! GA Chic is right, yardsticks or paint sticks.... (you can get a few free at HomeDepot or Lowes) would work! And Videosrfunfunfun made a great point too! Find a freebie and cut it down to work for you!
It will not be $5 likely nowdays….just great ideas. I have purchased $ store poster board. It is a lot thinner and I personally would not use it. I would use the heavier duty poster board for your wonderful shelf unit. Or if you want to use $ store--sandwich cardboard between $ store poster board. Great tutorial and inspirational.
This is a cool concept. I used to work in a workshop where we taught the mentally challenged how did you different types of Peace work. We used to take boxes and the brown packing tape and make jigs to put things like paper and different things then and you'd be surprised how much those things held. Hadn't thought about that in years till I seen this video I wonder which one is stronger? I like the cardboard cuz it paints and you can put things like decoupage and stuff on it so easily what about foam core I've never tried to put anything on it to cover it can you use paint or can you decoupage on it?🥰🐞🤗
You can turn virtually any stiff material, cardboard, foamboard, thick paperboard, etc, into a sturdy shelf by making a torsion box out of it. A torsion box is like those lightweight Ikea tables that have a fiberboard skin and cardboard honeycomb inside. Look it up online. Yes it's a little fiddly but the strength of the end product is worth the time.
I love this unit,. I got as excited about it as you are!!! Future project for me and master bath for my lighthouses. Thanks for all you do!! I have told several friends about your channel and all told me they would definitely take a peek, I am sure they will subscribe and enjoy your videos as much as I do! Thanks again!

Ahhhhhh This shelf is fantastic!! Can't wait to try this!!! Thanks for sharing with us!!!!
You are so welcome!
I love the idea to hot glue the bottle caps with the cutouts in it to hold the dowels; GENIOUS!!!
Thanks, Diana!
Not only strong but looks very sharp too :) Now, imagine, if you carefully cover it with contact paper you can make it match your room and reinforce all the joins too. It would never come apart. You made it look so easy I just may give it a shot!
Right???? I have 2 rolls sitting right here too...... ;)
Wow!! 🤩 Who knew foam board could hold so much??!! Great idea~thanks for sharing!! 💕💕
You are so welcome!
So brain is amazing! How you come up with this stuff is beyond me! Beautiful storage!🤗👌
Thank you! 😊
You are the Einstein of organization. Brilliant 💡
Don’t blame you about getting so excited, I would have too! Awesome! Now I want to make one for scrapbook 12 x 12 paper! Wish you would do a video of making that !! 🤞🏻
I think that would be too much weight.... unless you make them smaller for each color??
Paper is way to heavy for that.
I’ve recently found you and wish I’ve known you my whole life. I honestly feel like you can change my life. It’s like this channel was made for me ❤️ plus your being so happy and excited over this shelf being strong is so adorable!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you have you here with me. 🥰
This is absolutely amazing. You are so clever. Thank you for sharing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰🥰
You are so welcome!

I love it when you get all giddy about a project. This is a great idea for extra storage!
😂 You should see me when I get candy!!! LOL
@@TheCraftyOrganizer Ok, now it is on my bucket list to see that happen in person one day.
Awesome! Thanks love it!
OMGoodness, I became a fan of your channel with the gutter system, then the paperclip holder and now the bookcase for only $5 my crafting space is going to be so organized and at the fraction of the cost of buying office furniture. I love you! Thank you for all your affordable tutorials!
Wowww great idea!! You are so awesome!!! I love the bottle cap idea! Thank you for sharing
You are so welcome!
Fridge soda holder is brilliant! Especially with the amount of ribbon I have!! Honestly this is the sweetest unit EVER
I totally agree!
I'm excited too!
God bless you😇
Thanks so much! 😊 By the way... that storage shelf is STILL working!!!
@@TheCraftyOrganizer That’s awesome! 😲👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😃
I am definitely going to make this! You deserved to be giddy!!❤️
Yay! Thank you!
Geeky? NO. Adorable? Yes! I love this and your enthusiasm is contagious!
Yay, thank you! Now that I see how strong it is... my mind is racing with new ideas!!!!
@@TheCraftyOrganizer Ooooo I can’t wait to see them! 😁👏👏👏 No pressure though. Good things come to those who wait. 😉
Hi Norrine 🥰 You are so awesome!! Love this! Have a good week!
Thanks, Maritza!!! Hope you have a great week too!!
This is genius!!!! So customizable! Love it!!!!
bamboo, good choice - it's lighter than a dowel
That’s a valid thought! ❤️😀
I did not think of that. Good point!
@@rachelburgener819 thanks 😊
@@lesliehobson3196 thanks 😊
I'd like to say it was on purpose... but it was the only stick I had on hand! LOL
The she soda bottle bins help it look even better and more organized. I'm already thinking about attaching small caster wheels. It's great. Love it.
I love how excited you got about this. TFS
xoxo
Thank you so much.... everyone has been so sweet about how silly excited I got!
I know right?! I love it 💜
Noreen, you are totally amazing!!!!!
I think you’re fabulous! Love your spirit!
Thanks, Carla!!!
A work of organizing art!!! Such an affordable and easy project.
Yes! Thank you!
I wanna know how it holds up over 1 - 6 months then 12 months...
But if you got 6 months for 5-10 dollars then temporarily it might be worth it until you found a permanent solution
@@TheCraftyOrganizer Maybe try using another kind of glue? I know some glues might melt the foam, but you can test them first.
It’s so nice and clean looking, love it all white!
I think so too!
This is marvelous! Gotta get me some foam core!
Genius washi tape holder. I’m imagining this with washi that matches my project boxes! I am a real huge fan of napkins!
Napkins by season, my different bottles of decoupage and glue I use. How pretty !!!
Great idea!!
That is amazing!
That is perfect for my craft room. I created some triple thick cardboard shelves, but I ran out of boxes to use. The foam core looks sturdy.
IT IS!!! Still using it!
Wow, impressive....
I guess I didn't realize hot glue was that strong...
I would be excited if I made that too.....
That's great
Wtg😁💖
Thank you! It's not strong on smooth things, but paper, wood, fabric.... CRAZY strong!
It may even be less at Wal-Mart!!!! All suggestions are helpful. Thanks, Sherri!
I think I did the first storage under $2.
I'd LOVE to see pics!!!! You can share them to my Crafty Organizer page on Facebook: facebook.com/groups/730125317461615/
UNDER $2!!! That is incredible!!! Way to go!!!!
Loving this - happen to have 5 black foam core boards on hand - will make this as soon as i buy the furring stirps :D
Yes, it would be a bit higher now.... but still much more affordable than a traditional pressed particle board unit. And so much more fun to make. :)
I like the cardboard cuz it paints and you can put things like decoupage and stuff on it so easily what about foam core I've never tried to put anything on it to cover it can you use paint or can you decoupage on it?🥰🐞🤗
Yes! It's basically a foam sandwich between paper. It spray paints well (Just don't get it too wet) and decoupage would be perfect on it!
Ty Dear😘🐞🤗
Thank you so much!!!!
Fantastic. I just paid someone $25 to put together a bookcase I'd bought. I will make one of these for my art supplies. Thank you.
Wonderful!
😱 oh wow! I'm so impressed. I need this. T F S... Doing a happy dance with you. ❤️😁
Yay! Thank you!
GOD BLESS YOU IT'S AWESOME TO HAVE THIS IDEA THANK YOU SO MUCH I HAD BEEN THINKING ABOUT IT REALLY THOUGHT IT GOING TO A FAILURE CAUSE WHAT I WANT FOR IS 12×12 CARDSTOCK THOSE CONTAINERS TOTALLY EXPENSIVE AND DON'T WANT TO SPEND AN OUTRAGEOUSLY LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY . THANK YOU AGAIN
I think it’s awesome and you’re too cute 🥰
This STILL BLOWS MY MIND!!! WOW..THANKS!!
What a fantastic idea especially for small craft rooms. Yes!!!!!!!!! I am so doing this! ❤️❤️❤️
I'm so glad you were able to share your excitement with us!
I have watched this video more then 10 times and I have finally decided to just go through with making it. I went yesterday and got everything I need to make it and I'm going to attempt to make it today. Thank you for every video you upload.

Wow! I'm just starting to try and get my craft/sewing area set up and organized. This will be super helpful to make some of these! I hope my $$ store has some. 😊
I’m so so glad. Let me know how it goes.
Thank you for the idea 💡 and I'm going to add some stick & pill paper in and around it like you said to make it more sturdy 😊
Perfect! Please let me know how it turns out!
