If you're in the US and you're not sure where to find 3" foam or thicker, online seems to be the best option same as it is in the UK. I've found a link here that will deliver to the UK, so it sure as hell should deliver to you guys! insulation4us.com/collections/rigid-insulation/products/owens-corning-foamular-250-xps-insulation-board-all-sizes?variant=32154942177329 They are sold in large sheets of 8'x4', which means you will need to cut these down a bit and will need to buy a solid sheet at a time, but it's totally possible and still quite affordable, given how long that sheet will last you. You can select thickness on the right. From the looks of it, it would pretty much cost me the same as my local foam, even with $60(!) delivery to the UK, though you would be buying twice as much at once as I did with mine... Also it's pink foam, not blue, which from what I've heard is slightly better for taking texture and is less fibrous, but this is second hand knowledge coming from black magic craft. I've also linked the version with higher compressive strength, as I'm presuming that will be the hardest version that should take texture the best and squash the least - though that is theory on my part, I've not had many opportunities to test this theory. Hope this helps! Also if anyone has any questions about the system and how it works, or any ideas to share just ask! I'm here and happy to answer :)
Function yes, look as nice no, but you really don't need a grid! Check out my very first video, using a tape measure like wargaming makes it just as fast if not faster.... Plus it makes the minis and terrain so much better looking 😂

Dude. In case it isn't obvious yet, I want to time stamp my approval of this system. On September 28, 2020, I hereby declare that this is the best and most innovative crafting system of 2020. Absolutely game-changing.

I have had just about everything I need to make terrain like this for a few years now, oh, all apart from the space Lol, about the only free space I have in my flat is my bed and I have to share that with a German Shepherd dog most of the time 😀 I made a few tiles (never painted them or fit magnets in them, yet) some time ago but they are buried under boxes of half-built kits & printed mini's waiting for paint also. I'm considering making some terrain to display things that I can mount on the wall as I have a few feet of clear space not big enough to fit shelving, hmm I need to move some of these built aircraft & space ships onto my roof, that should free up some shelf space so I could move some finished stuff away and enable me to finish some more Lol life is hard sometimes😉 I Do like your mounting magnets to everything! wonder if I could mount a dungeon on a wall? shame I don't have one big or clear enough but it is a good idea 🙂 worth investigating I believe, hmm a dungeon on my roof & a pole to move the mini's, I would have to use a small step ladder to put the tiles up, shame I don't think fitting a steel sheet up there is feasible, hmm **goes cross-eyed staring vacantly at the ceiling!**
Let me know if you find a source, I'll crowdsource a list for people. It's weird that you're having a harder time in the US, usually it's the other way around! I've seen other crafters use some thick foam before, so hopefully it's just a matter of finding the right supplier!
@Kid Buu you definitely could, if you're gluing them after cutting either tacky glue or a thin layer of hot glue should work fine, just bear in mind a thick layer of hot glue can add a fraction of height which when you stack them up can mess with your measurements :) for filling the gaps check out my kobold tunnels video, I show how to hide magnets using milliput or modelling compound on that build. I'd recommend making the join slightly recessed and indented so the dry compound or putty doesn't scrape against other blocks and scratch off paint, it's more prone to that than foam is (milliput less so than compound) :)
Woo Hoo, more tiles/base blocks :D Great work on another incredible video. From when I started watching your videos, there has not been one that I've been reluctant to watch. They've all be entertaining, informative, polished and easy to understand. I'll be looking forward to see what next weeks video brings :D
Incredible! I have recently been shown the magic of make up brushes for dry brushing. This video has convinced me to take the plunge and pick up a few. Very good tutorial and nice system!
Just discovered your channel. This system is brilliant...the ONLY problem I can see with it is storage and transportation when gaming away from home. Hmmm...
hello man you can't ask you don't have instructions or advice on the use of flexible terrain I wanted to make a battle board for the legion but I don't have enough space to have a board somewhere to roll up thank you
i would look at stepped slopes rather than smooth, say three 1 inch tiers, irregular edges but space for a mini to stand on each tier of the piece for maximum gameplay
Currently, I don't, as I dm at home. HOWEVER, I have plans to show some clever methods of storage that should help travelling DMs take this stuff with them :)
I havent finished watching yet but I'm in love with all of your modular stuff! Question: what is preventing you from using magnets instead of the 45 degree angle sticks? I much prefer magnets and have been trying to figure a way integrate them in this. Otherwise. Wow. This is such an amazing idea to make modular mountain and cliff and cave stuff. Brilliant as always!
Thanks Kate! So, honestly, I did play around with the magnets and it's not totally impossible to do, it's just a lot more work, cost and that I'm not sure many people are up for, so I went back to the sticks as a nice easy solution. Honestly though they're a lot easier to use than the half inch versions I used in the first version of the wood tiles, so thus far I'm fairly happy using them instead of magnets anyway. It also combines well with allowing accessories anywhere and makes overhanging blocks plenty secure :)
So... getting on the "Icewindale vibe". Did you ever planned on made some Frost Grave terrain stuff? Even something like "The Wall" from GoT. If you don't like the ice theme that much, we also have the Ghost Archipelago jungle vibe game to get inspired too
Oh believe me, ice and jungle terrain will both be making an appearance at some point, I don't play frostgrave myself but I do plan on using similar locations in d&d :)
GM: So to reach your next objective you will travel through a mountain path PC: We will charter small boat and take the river wich would.. GM: DID I STUTTER?!
So I pretty much watch crafting videos for hours to get ideas for my own dungeon and dragon campaigns. Pretty much been nixed with Covid, but I love crafting anyway. For me your designs are the in between I like the most. Other crafters focus on cost and go low end. Others spend money on expensive items to allow crafting with purchased grass and plaster terrain and a bunch of other things. So I have subscribed to yours while I have avoided subscribing to the multitude of others. One thing I do, however, on the expensive side is 3-D print, which can be the expensive side and counter to what I talked about previously, but more of an interest for me since I do design work. You would be amazed how the combination of 3-D printing and crafting can make things with that extra wow factor.
Hi man, this is a bit late but hopefully you still see this :S I'm a big fan of your channel and your work, and I particularly love these mountain blocks along with your cave tiles! I do have one question though: did you manage to find a method to consistently cut the inverted corner blocks (the ones you said could potentially be optional) on the hot wire cutter? I'm getting ready to finally make myself a set of more vertical blocks and stuff, and I can't seem to get my head around it in any easy way besides setting up an angled jig on my proxxon. Would love to hear your take on it, as I feel like I may well just be overthinking it! :') Thanks again for the fantastic content!
For the angled corners I found it was easiest to draw on the templates, then just hold the piece manually and cut a chunk off just above the template lines on all sides. If you did this, you could then line the wire up with it at an angle and place other blocks of the same type flat on the proxxon, but you still wouldn't be able to use the guide because you'd need to hold the piece at a 45 degree angle to get the right cut still, if you see what I mean :)
Ok, new question since now I now how to make the square angled blocks, does ANYONE know how to make the corner blocks? the ones to the very very last on the right in 2:20?
I know this is an older vid but looking over some pictures of mountain paths, it seems that a mountain set would have more in common with your hill set but with more rocky outcroppings and places bare of grass
I use this type of system, but with magnets. I put zinc grab screws into the terrain pieces and then glue the magnet to the screw. I use a filler to cover the magnet and it works great as opposed to holes in the blocks that can tear and are so visible. Those holes are pretty ugly and you go to all this effort, why not hide the connectors.
Hello! I love this system but I’m having a bit of trouble crafting it myself. Specifically, cutting the last style of block (the really thin corner piece). Would there be a way for someone to explain how I should route one of the cubes in order to get this cut? Thanks in advanced!
Hi Tyler! Basically you want to use the angled block template to mark and hot wire cut off a solid chunk, then use the corner template (the wiggly one) on one corner, with all the triangles of the template pointing to the same corner, so to speak. Then just use a knife to trim down the foam until it matches the corner template lines :) you can have the corner either bulging or flat depending on how much you cut off from the 'middle' :)
Fantastic ideas, love this video :D One question, would putting the holes in and then battering them help hide them or does the distortion make them useless?
Hi! I just started watching a week ago, And I'm really excited to start building this stuff for my DND party! I have one question though. How can I measure distances using the magnet system, as there are no usuable grids. Thank you for your efforts in bringing these videos to us. :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial oh! Thank you! Edit: sorry to bother you but what is your first video called? I can't seem to find it Edit Edit: Found it! Thanks for all your help
for the holes specifically I would just go back over with thinner paint so you can get it in :) I've also got an optional upgrade video on patreon for magnetising them instead, if that's something you'd prefer - but yeah, thin paint :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial Since I have already made the holes on all parts I will probably stay with the system. In any case, thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try :-)
Would you still use sticks to join them and add accessories or would you use magnets if building them now? From the looks of it and for strength - I suspect sticks are still better.
Actually now I have a fully magnetic system that is just as strong but a lot easier, it's a patron bonus video (part of the video series I like to call 'project hindsight' 😄
@@RPArchiveOfficial appreciate that, as I don’t currently do patreon for anyone (I do buy stuff through your links sometimes though), do you advise using the standard floor tile template for magnet placement? Or do uses the method noted on you Minecraft block vid? I can figure the rest out from there. 😂
If you cut them to size first, a thin layer of either will work. If you want to glue them, then cut, black magic craft does a full video on gluing foam and keeping it cut-able by a hot wire :) I'd advise just cutting them to size first though, much easier...
I'm slowly releasing the system as STLs on patreon, haven't done the Mountainblocks yet, but there is a full mountainblocks 2.0 video with a far improved design :)
@@RPArchiveOfficialwhere is the 2.0 version? Can not see it. Btw, I was so motivated by this video that I made these tiles myself as STL with a mild stone texture :D also with holes for magnets (inside the model, for print pause print shenanigans). Thank you for this, I'll have some fun with these on the table!
An amazing video and a cool idea. I started doing something similar a few weeks ago, but my set is very much inspired by dwarven forge 😅. One question though, If this kind of set is made from 2 inch blocks, could it still go well with your dungeon and building tiles?
It will go well with those, but the wall and temple system is 3 inch based, so you'd have to use multiples, like 3 blocks to make 6 to fit two wide 3" stair pieces, that kind of thing :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial I figured I would have to do something like that. As long as it can be combined. :) Also, you have an awesome channel, by far my favorite crafting channel on youtube. I got my proxxon today, so I'll make like 90% of the stuff you made. Keep it up 😁
@@RPArchiveOfficial Your builds both look fantastic and are very functional. It's what i like most about your channel. I just recently got into the hobby, and I can honestly tell you you have some of the most quality stuff on youtube.

You seem to be good at allocating multiple sources of materials, more so than other crafting youtubers. I wa wondering, since you live in the Uk, would you mind trying to do a video where you compare the grey foam you use, the green foam found commonly in germany, and the blue and pink foams found more in North America?
@@RPArchiveOfficial Nice. If cost is an issue, and you are dead set on doing that, you could make it wider known that you have plans for this, im sure, people would be happy to help fund a video like that, even shipping foam from their areas to you. I may be able to do this myself, i just have to make sure my wallet isnt going to be completely dry as I am investing in a few kickstarters st the moment.
There's an updated version made more recently where I redesigned them completely to use magnets and have modular facings for different environments :) you can see it in my latest lava video, and the video showing making them is a bonus video thank you to patrons for making all this possible :)

I'd recommend making the join slightly recessed and indented so the dry compound or putty doesn't scrape against other blocks and scratch off paint, it's more prone to that than foam is (milliput less so than compound) :)
Dude seriously... EPIC!!
Woo Hoo, more tiles/base blocks :D
Great work on another
incredible video.
From when I started watching your videos, there has not been one that I've been reluctant to watch. They've all be entertaining, informative, polished and easy to understand.
I'll be looking forward to see what next weeks video brings :D
Thanks matt! Always love reading your comments :)
you're more than welcome, thanks heaps for making amazing free videos for the community
I'll keep 'em coming :)
Ok, I love this, so I’m doing this now
You earned yourself a sub, mate
Glad to hear it :) thanks man!
This is an art attack; this is an art attack! This is "art attack"!
The Niel Buchanan of foam cutting and dungeon building.
Really clever & creative ways to DIY a D&D miniatures wargaming, playable modular mountain, cave, caverns, etc.!
The pieces of styrofoam I have to use came from packing materials I saved from shelf units built in my apt.
Thanks, and nice! Free materials are always great 😅
Yes! What a great addition to your modular system!
Thanks Jacob! I've got a fair few plans than let you use these in other ways too :)
Incredible! I have recently been shown the magic of make up brushes for dry brushing. This video has convinced me to take the plunge and pick up a few. Very good tutorial and nice system!
Thanks man! Yeah they're great, can't fault 'em :)
I really love your "vilain" warband ! Where do you get them? And they have a lovely paintjob too! 👌
The barbarians? They're frostgrave barbarians and the colour scheme is a mix of browns, tans and greys with a dark tone wash :)
This is bloody brilliant.
Thanks Lucas!
Just discovered your channel. This system is brilliant...the ONLY problem I can see with it is storage and transportation when gaming away from home. Hmmm...
I've got plans for that - give me time and keep an eye on the channel ;)
Oh my God, it all looks so good. Would love to play using this terrain :)
Thanks! I can't wait to use it myself either 😅
Lovely Mei profile picture you've got.
hello man you can't ask you don't have instructions or advice on the use of flexible terrain I wanted to make a battle board for the legion but I don't have enough space to have a board somewhere to roll up thank you
Omfg this is an amazing, very modular terrain I need to make these.
Thanks man! check out the cave tile additions in one of my more recent videos if you like this :)
cant find the cubes on your equipment list
i would look at stepped slopes rather than smooth, say three 1 inch tiers, irregular edges but space for a mini to stand on each tier of the piece for maximum gameplay
This looks amazing! I will have to finally take the dive into foam creations... Awesome job! Love the Caveman Method as well! Works great! - Jill
Excellent! Once you start using this material you won't look back ;)
can you build a rebel base on Yavin IV? its for star wars legion
Holy crap. Rad system man
Thanks Luke. If you like this one you might be interested in some of my other stuff, it all works together :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial oh I'll be watching all of them!
Nice top down shot of you at work in there Matt. Way to change it up.
That seems like a great system!
Thanks man :)
Nice work. I'm currently building your temple system(almost finished). I'll have to start this after.
Awesome! Let me know how it turns out :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial will post it on the dndiy reddit when done probably next week. And I'll link your video for it
Awesome! Thanks man!
Absolutely killer!
Thanks man!
your crafts never cease to amaze me. However, How do you store all your crafts and how do you carry them if you are a travelling GM?
Currently, I don't, as I dm at home. HOWEVER, I have plans to show some clever methods of storage that should help travelling DMs take this stuff with them :)
This is awesome!
Thanks Uwe!
@@RPArchiveOfficial that's a fair rationale. Sometimes the best option is the least complicated one haha
Oh undoubtedly. Unfortunately 😅
My perfectionist side hates it every time that happens!
So this is where the magnet obsession began…
This is amazing!! So flexible and looks fantastic!
Thanks Michelle! Hopefully will only get more flexible when I release the compatible tiles...
RP Archive I can't wait to see them!
So... getting on the "Icewindale vibe".
Oh ho ho that's music to my ears!
GM: So to reach your next objective you will travel through a mountain path
PC: We will charter small boat and take the river wich would..
GM: DID I STUTTER?!
Haha, rivers are planned...
I pretty much agree. 3d printing is something I plan to incorporate as soon as I can free up desk space/time to learn to use a printer :)
This is some real next level work - both the crafting and the video itself
Thanks Hilde, a lot of effort gets put in so its really nice getting comments like this :)
Thank you so much I’ve been doing wargaming since chain mail that was the out before the original D&D. I really enjoy your builds.
put them on a watery mat and you've got fantastic islands or coastlines.
Yeah that's one that came to me shortly after wrapping up photography haha :) it's a good one though!
Ok, new question since now I now how to make the square angled blocks, does ANYONE know how to make the corner blocks? the ones to the very very last on the right in 2:20?
ua-cam.com/video/8hJSG20Mk6E/v-deo.html
7:07 :)
Such a cool idea! Thank you!
Thank you for commenting :)
i would actually by a set of these blocks/tiles
I know this is an older vid but looking over some pictures of mountain paths, it seems that a mountain set would have more in common with your hill set but with more rocky outcroppings and places bare of grass
Problem is that wouldn't be as flexible in showing much steeper terrain and/or caves :)
I show a similar system upgrade in a patreon bonus video :)
Just falling into ur vids and this one in perticular, but its frustrating to find foam board or blocks with the right thickness in germany :D
The new updated version to be released on patreon as a thank you to supporters soon can be made with 1"/25mm foam easy :)
Plus it looks a lot better 😂
@@RPArchiveOfficial Thanks so much!!
I keep imagining all the extra bits you've made with this you probably have a garage full of them.
Haha, actually pretty much everything I've built so far fits on one free-standing shelf... In the garage. So you're part right 😅
Fantastic ideas, love this video :D One question, would putting the holes in and then battering them help hide them or does the distortion make them useless?
It might distort the opening, so I'd generally avoid :)
Very nice! Where do you usually buy your foam from? It seems a bit higher quality than others I have seen
There are links and more info in the equipment list in the description :)
algorithm
Hahaha! Appreciate it man :)
That intro map reminds of the maps from Final Fantasy Tactics. Such a fun game.

Hey I couldn't find the template you mentioned in the video on your patreon. Did I miss them?

My bad :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial Thanks!!
Where's he getting this foam from in the UK? I always struggle to find it

Hi! I just started watching a week ago, And I'm really excited to start building this stuff for my DND party! I have one question though. How can I measure distances using the magnet system, as there are no usuable grids. Thank you for your efforts in bringing these videos to us. :)
Check out my very first video, I explain this :) 3" tiles let you use them as a grid pretty easily even without markings too
@@RPArchiveOfficial oh! Thank you!
Edit: sorry to bother you but what is your first video called? I can't seem to find it
Edit Edit: Found it! Thanks for all your help
Is that frost giant a reaper bones one?
Gale force 9 :)
Ah ok, thanks!
Would you have any tips for priming? I have the problem that I hardly get paint in the holes.
for the holes specifically I would just go back over with thinner paint so you can get it in :)
I've also got an optional upgrade video on patreon for magnetising them instead, if that's something you'd prefer - but yeah, thin paint :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial Since I have already made the holes on all parts I will probably stay with the system. In any case, thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try :-)
Both work, it's all optional :) enjoy!
Amazing, I'm so excited to make these😊
Hope you enjoy!
What method would you recommend for fixing three 1" sections together? Hot or tacky glue?
If you cut them to size first, a thin layer of either will work. If you want to glue them, then cut, black magic craft does a full video on gluing foam and keeping it cut-able by a hot wire :)
I'd advise just cutting them to size first though, much easier...
@@RPArchiveOfficial thanks! Will do!
unable to find the patern
Ayee a black templars player
So nice! Did anybody ever bothered to create STL files to mimic this? I would definitely be interested
Most innovative builder out there!
Thanks Marc, it's great hearing things like that :)
Also, you have an awesome channel, by far my favorite crafting channel on youtube. I got my proxxon today, so I'll make like 90% of the stuff you made. Keep it up 😁
Awesome! That's great to hear honestly, sometimes I worry I got a bit over the top 😅
@@RPArchiveOfficial Your builds both look fantastic and are very functional. It's what i like most about your channel. I just recently got into the hobby, and I can honestly tell you you have some of the most quality stuff on youtube.
Thanks a lot man, it's great to hear :) just wish the algorithm would show me to more people 😅
I've spent lockdown making some basic dungeon tiles using a 3d printer and then casting them in plastic.
However, this is definitely going to be my next project!
Awesome! :)
What are the bandit minis used in this video? I'd like to get some of those for my home games.
Frostgrave barbarians
@@RPArchiveOfficial Thank you! I found them on Amazon and other places.
You seem to be good at allocating multiple sources of materials, more so than other crafting youtubers. I wa wondering, since you live in the Uk, would you mind trying to do a video where you compare the grey foam you use, the green foam found commonly in germany, and the blue and pink foams found more in North America?
Honestly, that's on my to do list, it's just a bit cost prohibitive with shipping :)
Oh I'll do something like that when I get round to it, but when I do I also want to compare aussie foam, as that seems quite different :)
Holy cow
Thanks man :)
But, how did you cut the other forms of blocks?
I think I show that in the follow up video to this one? The mountain fortress one :)
This is gorgeous and the music really adds inspiration to it! What is the music from?
Epidemic sound, though I can't remember the tracks :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial thank you
I wasn't expecting cocktail sticks to connect them together. I assumed magnets. But it's an awesome system you've created.
There's an updated version made more recently where I redesigned them completely to use magnets and have modular facings for different environments :)
you can see it in my latest lava video, and the video showing making them is a bonus video thank you to patrons for making all this possible :)
Perfect for Deadzone
Definitely gonna make a bunch of these for when I take my players through the Underdark!!
Awesome!
This is EPIC !!! Definetly gona be one of my future projects :)
Awesome! Enjoy man :)
i want to make it but it's going to be so expensive!
It's really not too bad, at least not if you can get the foam without too much delivery cost :)
omg the climbing stage is so beautiful!
It's awesome isn't it! I love being able to do combats like that with my players now :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial I will definitly build this for my campaign as well! Thank you for the good tutorial and idea!
