    MINI BASE MAGNETS:
    To secure minis to tiles like this, I use a plate of tin superglued to the bottom of the mini, and a magnet put in there only when you need it, like now, or for storage.
    This preserves the other advantages of a hollow underside base, which I've shown previously in the grassland video. Also saves on magnets.
    CHEAP STACKING BLOCKS:
    I cut these from 3" thick EPS (Expanded polystyrene, the cheap stuff used as packaging). I bought it as a sheet from a building supply shop (Wickes), and sliced It up with a knife and my hot wire. The sheet I got was slightly thinner than advertised, so I added a layer of 1/16" chipboard over it, and cut some of the magnetic sheet to fit over that, which rounded it out to the 3" tall it was supposed to be!
    To cut the arches, I just cut the shape out using my hot wire, if you do it in two differed directions you can even have the corners act more like pillars and still be able to see in and move models.
    WALL CRACK AMBUSH ROOM PIECES:
    1" thick main wall (3x3x1/2", two pieces)
    1" thick side walls - 3x2x1"
    1/2" thick floor - 2x1x1/2"
    OVERHANGING BLOCK PIECES:
    1" thick side walls - 3x3x1"
    1/2" thick floor - 3x1x1/2"
    CAVE TILE PAINT SCHEME:
    I start with a coat of 2:1 neutral grey and tan, mixed with 1 part matte mod podge. If your foam isn't grey you can start with black mixed with mod podge, and then do the than grey layer over it. From there I layer up with drybrushing, firstly with a heavy drybrush of a 1:2 mix of neutral grey and tan, which gives an earthier, more natural look to the stone but keeps the cold grey in the recesses, before giving a final drybrush of white over both.
    Once these were done and completely dry, as in I let them dry for a few hours at least to avoid the wash rehydrating the paint, I gave everything a coat of homemade black wash.
    If you've made this kind of wash before it's basically the same as the black brown wash I usually use except it's pure black ink, and no brown.
    If you haven't, it's easy to make. The mix is just a 60/40 mix of water to acrylic matte medium, with a few drops of flow improver in as well, and then some carbon black ink to add the colour before shaking. For a half full 120ml bottle I used 20 drops, do you can multiply that by how much you're making to get the right amount.
    Finally I sealed everything with a coat of water based matt varnish, which is foam safe.
    LIMESTONE TARMAC:
    I found this stuff at a building supply shop (Wickes), I'm fairly sure the colour will vary between regions and possibly even between batches, but so far my source has seemed reasonably reliable, and is VERY cheap for a lot of material, so its worth a shot.
    It also comes in nice jagged natural shapes, unlike a lot of rocky material you can get from garden centres and the like. I've added linked to my equipment list too, but here's the stuff I used:

    Great stuff. Exactly what I was looking for on caves for my all-dwarf game.
    Recommendation for easier bridges in case someone doesn't want to do all the magnets: I found around this time of year many craft stores have little picket fences for fairy gardens held together with a rather sturdy wire. If you cut off the points of the fence, and turn it on its side, you get a flexible bridge that's rigid enough to hold some HEAVY metal models without flexing at certain lengths. Not quite as cool, but a good alternative nonetheless.

    Krak video, mate. Reminds me of when I devised a cunning Kobold lair with tight corridors and traps, and the party just sent in 28 warhounds (yes, that is 28). Some died to traps, but eventually ate all the Kobolds, including the younglings :( Still, I might get past that DM trauma and try to make some caves of my own, thanks for the vid!

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 роки тому

      Haha, push through and make some counters of your own - a trap that dogs would fall for, but players wouldn't... Let the dogs clear some kobolds from the entrance, but then they fall foul of the trap and the players must proceed alone...
      Players get a win, but don't bypass the whole dungeon :)

    You might want to consider including smaller stones, grit, and sand in your rubble piles. Also, I suggest you paint them using the same techniques that you've used for other cave pieces to keep the look more uniform. As they are now, they're missing the finer scale details and kinda just look like gravel glued together.

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 роки тому

      The problem I find with adding smaller grade stones (Which I considered) is that those stones look horribly 'floaty' when placed on even slightly uneven terrain, which is much less of a problem for the larger rocks due to their shape and size. The idea with them is they are larger rocks placed around the posts by the kobolds for additional support, so it kinda makes sense there's not a pile of smaller rocks around them :)
      as for painting them, I much prefer the detail you get from the natural colours of the rocks, it's so much better than drybrushing and also saves time crafting, so is a double win! Where the colour differs from the tiles I quite like it as it breaks up the monotony of the colour scheme and can easily be seen as varying types of stone within the same cave.

      Like I said, you can choose to weigh the tunnels down with rivets in the bottom instead, it's just not quite as stable, and overall, not that much cheaper (rivets aren't free!)
      As for the bridge, you can Lower the number of magnets by connecting it to card tab tiles using bbq skewers as I show in the grassland video, which hold more tightly than card tabs, and forgo the hand ropes. That cuts it down a fair amount, you could even use less magnets underneath for holding models, it just limits the number you can securely place

      Volos guide to monsters, d&d 5th edition :)
      If you want great source material, Volos is great, but so is a lot of 3.5e stuff, the fiendish codexes, manual of planes and the book of vile darkness/exalted good specifically. Oh and deities and demigods is great for getting an understanding of the actual limitations of the gods...

      A cool trick one of my patrons showed in the fb private group was labelling the magnets quickly before gluing with a sharpie - you only really need to draw a line on every North side to tell the difference instantly :)

    Hey Matt love this content as always !!! Just got one concern ... I was told that you can't mix the neodymium magnets with ferriet (the black sheets) magnets because in time they will depolarise each other ? Have you read or heard about that ? thx !

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 роки тому

      Hmm, I haven't heard anything and couldn't find anything with a quick Google but I'd love to see if you can find a source for that info? Lots of people use that combo for mini storage, where depolarising would be disastrous!

    Great video and love the ideas. I will definitely have to try them out.
    Was considering joining Patreon but ouch, lowest level is a bit much. I support a number of crafters so can't justify more than a few dollars each. Too bad there isn't a "give what you can" option - the minimum is the lowest package.

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 роки тому

      The problem with low tier amounts is that the % that goes to Patreon itself is MUCH higher. It still helps the creator a little, but not nearly as much. A lot of creators now don't have cheaper tiers for exactly this reason, it stops generous patrons having less of their money reach creators than they might expect. There's no guaranteed way to communicate the issue to patrons before they choose that tier.
      Patreon itself actually recommends you don't set low tiers, its not them trying to take advantage and get a higher %, it costs them more (relatively) to process the transaction, hence the higher % going to Patreon to pay their costs.
      Hope that helps explain it :)

      @@RPArchiveOfficial thanks for the info, I've heard people complain that patreon is a raw deal and number of creators have left it. Why not provide alternatives like a reoccurring monthly on PayPal? I know it won't allow me to unlock the extra content but all I really want to do is support creators like yourself.

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 роки тому

      Oh I get that, but patreon provides a lot of other benefits to creators like retrying declines and other things, which PayPal doesn't, and makes the income more unreliable (important) and more work for the creator (also important)
      Speaking of work for the creator, I've gotta get back to working on the next video :) hope that explains the reasoning!
