I live in Madrid, Spain and right outside my building are two beautiful trees that I've always like to "pretend" were cherry blossoms because they look so similar. Never wanted to look up what tree it is but I decided today was the day. They are almond trees, and their blossoms are very similar. I still like to look at that tree everyday I come and go from home and think of a Japan-Spain connection and the day I can go visit Japan again!

Also, make sure you be VERY, VERY careful when feeding a cat a raw food diet from food that you make yourself. You have to include a lot of different organs, ground bones, eggs, and supplements (and not just meat) to make sure that cats get all their daily needs, ESPECIALLY, taurine.
Yeah, a friend of mine did this because one of her cats apparently had bad reactions to a lot of ready-made food and it was pretty involved. I know she had a separate freezer for the meat and everything, a whole bunch of supplements to add and her cats' health and bloodworks were closely monitored by a vet. It's certainly not the easiest thing to do or something for very squeamish people.

Here in the Southern Palatinate region of Germany we get almond blossoms during this time of the year, so whenever I take a walk through the park in my hometown, I like to pretend I'm in Japan 🤭 of course It's nowhere near as gorgeous as the trees at 7:50, my god, so pretty 😭🌸

Best tip I ever got for adding miso to soup is to stir the paste in through a sieve that is partially submerged in the dashi, that way the miso is dispersed easily and you don’t risk miso falling into the soup in chunks.

Those water fountains for cats, they seem like such a great idea, when the cats seem to prefer drinking from a drizzling tap rather than a bowl, but I don't know, everyone I know that ever got one for their cat, the cat wasn't keen. Wet food. Both my cats have liked the wet food most, but homemade, one of their favourite treats is just straight up beef mince, in a baggy, with just a dash of water in from the kettle. Squish it around to warm the meat and flavour the water into a kind of gravy. Just like that. They like it. Both have also like smoked salmon, but that's a bit pricey for an always thing. Cheap tins of canned tuna in oil from the human food section are loved also.

Aww Maro looks so settled! I can see why Sakura is so appreciated in Japan, its very beautiful! Where I grew up in the UK, our local council had lined most public parks with blossom trees & as a kid, riding your bike or walking through underneath them when the petals were falling was so magical, along with how pretty they looked. Sadly where I live now, there aren't many at all in public spaces.
Raw food can sometimes be a bit rough on domestic cats stomachs (especially if they’re used to prepackaged wet food). There’s a list of cat macros somewhere on the internet too, so as long as they’re get all that they’ll be good!

It is easy to see why you like these out of the way special spots. You could make a neat four picture set showing that small tunnel of cherry trees from the same vantage point in all four seasons. (as you have a space on the wall for such a poster, sorry Elon) This video also had major déjà vu as it is very similar in feel, structure, and sequence as your April 28th, 2019 "Day at home in northern Japan" video. A tip for anyone who har trubble to get their cat to eat something new is to transision slowly, blend the old and the new it's even better if your cat has access to dry food becuse then you can just grind it up and sprinkle it over/blend it in the new food becuse dry food often has a more intense taste. btw if you chhose to make your own I have found that PMR diet is superior to BARF as cats a carnovores the racio of meat for PMR is 80% muscle meat 10% raw meaty bones (chicken wings ex) and 10% organ meat that MUST contain liver. If you dont want to have to do all this but still want to try raw there are some companies that offer freezdried(just add water) or bags with "meatballs" that contains almost everthing they need nutrition ways.
To go into slightly more detail, cats are obligate/true predators aka they are evolved to gain their nutrition entirely from predation of other animals. This is why it is important to have cartilage in their diet as well as what has already been mentioned and why they don't have an essential dietary need for carbohydrates (most mammals don't, including you); in fact several scientific studies link high carb diets to obesity and diabetes in cats.
If you're thinking about changing your cat's diet, especially switching to a raw diet, talk to your vet first and get their input, not random people from the internet please uwu
For the raw food diet, I totally recommend, but I would still supplement with a highly nutritious dry food. I only say that because there’s a particular nutrient that cats need. I can’t remember what it’s called, but it can be really hard for them to get it from a raw food diet. :)
You're thinking of taurine. Cats can't make their own, it doesn't get stored in their bodies, and will degrade quickly if not consumed soon enough. So, it must be present in their daily diet in the proper amount. Also, Niacin (B3), Thiamin (B1), Preformed vitamin A, and Calcium are often not in sufficient quantity within homemade cat food, and non-professionally prepared raw cat diets.
@@EnigmaDave you are so right! My cat got really sick after 2 months of raw diet and so, with the help of our vet, we switched to 1/2 dry food and 1/2 wet food. Cat fountains are a good way to keep them hydrated.
I think a common mistake with rawfood diet, is that they only get..hm.. how do you say it in English? Muscle meat? Give them the liver, heart etc, basically what wild animals are eating in the wild, and they will have more of the nutrients their bodies need! 😊 where I live, the pet store sell good affordable packages of mixed meat that will ensure the correct nutritional value. You could buy everything separately and mix it yourself of course, but I think maybe not all supermarkets have hearts and liver and such in stock.. depends on what people's local food culture is! 😊
I would recommend wet food over dry food. Dry food is high in carbohydrates that cats' systems struggle with, and low in moisture. As someone who had a cat with Chronic Kidney Disease, take any precautions you can for your cat *not* to develop CKD and do not feed dry food!
My cats have been raw for 2 years!! You literally made me so happy when you said you wanted to feed Maro raw! Its the best! I actually used to be a consultant at a raw pet food company so it was my job to help people transition their pets to raw. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of advice about making your own raw food, since mine is premade, but I highly recommend consulting a vet (idk what the raw scene is like in Japan you may want to get in touch with a vet in Canada or the states). The reason you should consult a vet is cause cats need a delicate balance of nutrients that can't be achieved from just raw meat so you need to monitor and adjust according. One of your biggest challenges will be getting the right amount of taurine in the food, it's crucial for cats and very delicate. But for transitioning Maro I can offer lots of advice on that. At first, you're only going to be adding about a teaspoon to his food, and mixing it in well. Depending on how he does you can add more or less. You kinda wanna slowly trick him lol. As you add more you will also take away the old food so the portions are roughly the same. If he completely refuses to touch it (like one of my cats did) unfortunately the best way to get him to eat it is to let him get hungry. It sounds tough but its best for them in the long run. My cat eventually relented and ate the food and has now been very happy on it for 2 years. Also, I would recommend getting him completely off the kibble before the transition, its much easier that way. Please let me know if you have more questions, I'm happy to help!
Excellent advice! I mentioned taurine in my post. The previous owners of a cat I rescued, fed her a raw diet. The result is that she is blind, has an extremely weak heart muscle and kidney problems. She's the sweetest little thing, now safe living with me, and with regular meds and vet visits, doing well.

Kind of amazing that you essentially have your living space and office in the same building, but still the ability to physically leave work. Spring looks so beautiful where you live!! Our landlords completely changed the landscaping two years ago in front of the apartment building we live in and now every spring I get to see cherry blossoms right in front of my window! (Also, if you want to feed raw, you should probably talk to a vet, because few cats are happy with a drastic diet change and it's important they still get the right nutrition^^)

We lost most of the trees in our city in a bit storm last year, so I am living vicariously through you and your videos of trees. I'm so tired of looking at stumps.
I dont know about cats, but for our dogs, we just cook some brown rice in a rice cooker and mix whatever supplements or veggies we have or that they need with it (either before or after cooking the rice, whatever makes it easier to eat). Super easy set up, they love it, and the vets say they're at their healthiest ever!
That's beautiful. Usually you only see sakura trees in parks. Forests don't really benefit from non-native trees like sakura, because most native insects and birds almost never live or feed from non-native trees. Probably why they're so rare in forests

I'm afraid my cats would be come obsessed with an automatic feeder and just stare at it all day because that's their personality 😅 be careful of doing the homemade raw food diet. So people can do it properly if you do your research but a lot of people withhold required nutritional balance from their pets because they don't do it correctly and most pet store foods have studies to back them up to show how they have been formulated to have a balanced diet. Congrats on the new place, it's so fun to redecorate things!
You can make kombu dashi very easily. Kombu is dried kelp seaweed and comes cut into sheets which are thicker than say, nori. Just rinse it, break it into pieces and cook till soft, then remove from the water and add everything else. I think you're meant to discard the kombu after you take it out, but I snack on it while I'm cooking the soup! 😂 Glad of the tip about when to add the miso. I usually add any seasonings or flavours late into cooking but will be especially careful to do this with miso.
@@e21big By the time I've added everything else to the soup, there's plenty of flavour going on in it but I understand what you mean. I don't eat fish so I don't add bonito, but I once bought miso that had bonito added to it and wondered why it had that extra flavour... until a colleague pointed out why. Needless to say, I gave it to him straight away! 😂

Where it comes to raw food for cats there are several things that I have seen work well with my mother's cats. 1) Tinned tuna - usually quite a cheap and easy option, 1 can = 2 meals. 2) Fish guts - you can often get these quite cheap from the fish market as most people prefer not to deal with them 3) Rabbit/chicken/duck guts - like the fish guts, you can often get this cheap from a butcher as they usually go to waste. 4) Fresh fish/meat - probably the most expensive option but very good for the cat although you will also have to spend some time prepairing it, just be careful of small bones that could get stuck in the cat's throat. There are books on recepes for cat food that could well be worth checking out but I would advise having the food mushed down to a paste like consistancy which will allow you to insert the food into objects like kongs and slow feeder cat bowls which make moderate meals feel more satisfying to the cat as he has to work harder to get at the food. A hand blender will be one of your most used kitchen items in making cat food so you may want to get a good one.

I can see why Sakura is so appreciated in Japan, its very beautiful! Where I grew up in the UK, our local council had lined most public parks with blossom trees & as a kid, riding your bike or walking through underneath them when the petals were falling was so magical, along with how pretty they looked. Sadly where I live now, there aren't many at all in public spaces.

Raw food can sometimes be a bit rough on domestic cats stomachs (especially if they’re used to prepackaged wet food). There’s a list of cat macros somewhere on the internet too, so as long as they’re get all that they’ll be good!

It is easy to see why you like these out of the way special spots. You could make a neat four picture set showing that small tunnel of cherry trees from the same vantage point in all four seasons. (as you have a space on the wall for such a poster, sorry Elon)
This video also had major déjà vu as it is very similar in feel, structure, and sequence as your April 28th, 2019 "Day at home in northern Japan" video. You even had glasses sponsorship, had cats, visited the river cherry trees, made food, etc. The only down side is we did not get a musical bit this time, bummer. So interesting to see how similar and yet how different two years time can be.

A tip for anyone who har trubble to get their cat to eat something new is to transision slowly, blend the old and the new it's even better if your cat has access to dry food becuse then you can just grind it up and sprinkle it over/blend it in the new food becuse dry food often has a more intense taste. btw if you chhose to make your own I have found that PMR diet is superior to BARF as cats a carnovores the racio of meat for PMR is 80% muscle meat 10% raw meaty bones (chicken wings ex) and 10% organ meat that MUST contain liver. If you dont want to have to do all this but still want to try raw there are some companies that offer freezdried(just add water) or bags with "meatballs" that contains almost everthing they need nutrition ways.
To go into slightly more detail, cats are obligate/true predators aka they are evolved to gain their nutrition entirely from predation of other animals. This is why it is important to have cartilage in their diet as well as what has already been mentioned and why they don't have an essential dietary need for carbohydrates (most mammals don't, including you); in fact several scientific studies link high carb diets to obesity and diabetes in cats.

For the raw food diet, I totally recommend, but I would still supplement with a highly nutritious dry food. I only say that because there’s a particular nutrient that cats need. I can’t remember what it’s called, but it can be really hard for them to get it from a raw food diet. :)
You're thinking of taurine. Cats can't make their own, it doesn't get stored in their bodies, and will degrade quickly if not consumed soon enough. So, it must be present in their daily diet in the proper amount.
Also, Niacin (B3), Thiamin (B1), Preformed vitamin A, and Calcium are often not in sufficient quantity within homemade cat food, and non-professionally prepared raw cat diets.
@@EnigmaDave you are so right! My cat got really sick after 2 months of raw diet and so, with the help of our vet, we switched to 1/2 dry food and 1/2 wet food. Cat fountains are a good way to keep them hydrated.

I think a common mistake with rawfood diet, is that they only get..hm.. how do you say it in English? Muscle meat? Give them the liver, heart etc, basically what wild animals are eating in the wild, and they will have more of the nutrients their bodies need! 😊 where I live, the pet store sell good affordable packages of mixed meat that will ensure the correct nutritional value. You could buy everything separately and mix it yourself of course, but I think maybe not all supermarkets have hearts and liver and such in stock.. depends on what people's local food culture is! 😊
I would recommend wet food over dry food. Dry food is high in carbohydrates that cats' systems struggle with, and low in moisture. As someone who had a cat with Chronic Kidney Disease, take any precautions you can for your cat *not* to develop CKD and do not feed dry food!

My cats have been raw for 2 years!! You literally made me so happy when you said you wanted to feed Maro raw! Its the best! I actually used to be a consultant at a raw pet food company so it was my job to help people transition their pets to raw. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of advice about making your own raw food, since mine is premade, but I highly recommend consulting a vet (idk what the raw scene is like in Japan you may want to get in touch with a vet in Canada or the states). The reason you should consult a vet is cause cats need a delicate balance of nutrients that can't be achieved from just raw meat so you need to monitor and adjust according. One of your biggest challenges will be getting the right amount of taurine in the food, it's crucial for cats and very delicate. But for transitioning Maro I can offer lots of advice on that. At first, you're only going to be adding about a teaspoon to his food, and mixing it in well. Depending on how he does you can add more or less. You kinda wanna slowly trick him lol. As you add more you will also take away the old food so the portions are roughly the same. If he completely refuses to touch it (like one of my cats did) unfortunately the best way to get him to eat it is to let him get hungry. It sounds tough but its best for them in the long run. My cat eventually relented and ate the food and has now been very happy on it for 2 years. Also, I would recommend getting him completely off the kibble before the transition, its much easier that way. Please let me know if you have more questions, I'm happy to help!
Excellent advice! I mentioned taurine in my post. The previous owners of a cat I rescued, fed her a raw diet. The result is that she is blind, has an extremely weak heart muscle and kidney problems. She's the sweetest little thing, now safe living with me, and with regular meds and vet visits, doing well.

Kind of amazing that you essentially have your living space and office in the same building, but still the ability to physically leave work. Spring looks so beautiful where you live!! Our landlords completely changed the landscaping two years ago in front of the apartment building we live in and now every spring I get to see cherry blossoms right in front of my window!
(Also, if you want to feed raw, you should probably talk to a vet, because few cats are happy with a drastic diet change and it's important they still get the right nutrition^^)

I dont know about cats, but for our dogs, we just cook some brown rice in a rice cooker and mix whatever supplements or veggies we have or that they need with it (either before or after cooking the rice, whatever makes it easier to eat). Super easy set up, they love it, and the vets say they're at their healthiest ever!

That's beautiful. Usually you only see sakura trees in parks. Forests don't really benefit from non-native trees like sakura, because most native insects and birds almost never live or feed from non-native trees. Probably why they're so rare in forests

I'm afraid my cats would be come obsessed with an automatic feeder and just stare at it all day because that's their personality 😅 be careful of doing the homemade raw food diet. So people can do it properly if you do your research but a lot of people withhold required nutritional balance from their pets because they don't do it correctly and most pet store foods have studies to back them up to show how they have been formulated to have a balanced diet. Congrats on the new place, it's so fun to redecorate things!
I thought Dashi is made from fish - but I guess everything has their vegetarian version
“dashi” just means broth, so it’s made from anything - mushrooms, kelp, fish, etc
You can make kombu dashi very easily. Kombu is dried kelp seaweed and comes cut into sheets which are thicker than say, nori. Just rinse it, break it into pieces and cook till soft, then remove from the water and add everything else. I think you're meant to discard the kombu after you take it out, but I snack on it while I'm cooking the soup! 😂
Glad of the tip about when to add the miso. I usually add any seasonings or flavours late into cooking but will be especially careful to do this with miso.

I don't eat fish so I don't add bonito, but I once bought miso that had bonito added to it and wondered why it had that extra flavour... until a colleague pointed out why. Needless to say, I gave it to him straight away! 😂

Where it comes to raw food for cats there are several things that I have seen work well with my mother's cats.
1) Tinned tuna - usually quite a cheap and easy option, 1 can = 2 meals.
2) Fish guts - you can often get these quite cheap from the fish market as most people prefer not to deal with them
3) Rabbit/chicken/duck guts - like the fish guts, you can often get this cheap from a butcher as they usually go to waste.
4) Fresh fish/meat - probably the most expensive option but very good for the cat although you will also have to spend some time prepairing it, just be careful of small bones that could get stuck in the cat's throat.
There are books on recepes for cat food that could well be worth checking out but I would advise having the food mushed down to a paste like consistancy which will allow you to insert the food into objects like kongs and slow feeder cat bowls which make moderate meals feel more satisfying to the cat as he has to work harder to get at the food. A hand blender will be one of your most used kitchen items in making cat food so you may want to get a good one.
