George was my hero as a little kid. I was a kicker and even wore #16 in peewee through junior high football. I was in high school when he pulled off his 5-week-in-a-row miracle.
Got to see Blanda play with the Houston Oilers. During the game, he threw a completion…underhanded…while being tackled. The crowd just blew up at the end of the play.
Was the kicker and QB at the same time...won games by himself. Smoked a cigarette and when the offense took the field he would throw a TD and kick the extra points. His 2 min 4th quarter drive to win the game by a Field goal was determined by him cause he knew how long he could kick the FG.
I remember watching Blanda's heroics back in 1970. It seemed like every week George was leading the Raiders to victory after they had been trailing. I was also lucky enough to see live Gordie Howe in his last season when he came and played against Boston when he was 52.
I remember watching him play and he played GREAT regardless of his age he has always one of the best players I have ever seen. I think Brett Farve took the record of most intersections from him, but Brett Farve was a Super star and was not afraid to throw into triple coverage, if he was intercepted he relied on his Defense to put the ball in his hand. When George Blanda retired he was still fit and he was the best player I have ever seen.
I remember watching Blanda on the Raiders, the games would show in Texas would be the late afternoon games, and he was inspirational. A QB and the kicker !
As a young boy and being able to watch the Broncos-Raiders games, even being a die hard Bronco fan, I loved watching him come into a game with all the chips down and lead the Raiders to a win. I often wondered what he told the kids in the huddle (some being young enough to be a grandkid)! Was it, “anyone lets anyone from the other team touch me, you will get a good old spanking”? I love George Blanda!
I just read an article about Tom Brady making a comeback in a few years and they mentioned George Blanda but said he did not start a single game in his last 7 years but made no mention that he was also a kicker, which of course he was mainly used as in those 7 years. One of the last of the straight on kickers I suppose and a great one. Now they rarely have straight on kicking even at the high school level.
Brady will play this season at the age of 44. He'd have to play another one at 45, 46, 47, 48 to tie, and 49 to beat him. No way is that gonna happen. Blanda could kick. That's why he was able to stick around so long.
I used to wait on him at the hardware store in Alameda where he lived. He was still playing. He looked like he was 110 years old. Cantankerous crabby old coot.
5:35 not exactly true. Blanda didn't spend 26 seasons in "the league." He spent 26 years in pro football across two different leagues, the NFL and AFL.
from what i heard, blanda was let go by the bears because they found out he was betting on games. the afl was desperate for players in 1960. the oilers maybe found out the same thing. why else would they cut a 2-time champion?
I don’t think Brady will make it. Brady’s got too much pride and dignity. He wants to out on top, like Elway, and he sure won’t be kicking extra points!
No . Brady had a good run , but hopefully will not play until he is 48 . Those days are gone . I think 40 is about as long as a player can go . Unless they are a kicker . Place kickers have long shelf life .
Back in the day football players were more like average people. So it's a shame that something like this will never happen again. I wish George blanda played for the Philadelphia Eagles back in the day, maybe we would have won a super bowl sooner, lolololol!
George was my hero as a little kid. I was a kicker and even wore #16 in peewee through junior high football. I was in high school when he pulled off his 5-week-in-a-row miracle.
ALWAYS enjoyed George Blanda's performance on the football field.

If Brady had been born a couple of years earlier he’d have done the 90s, 00s, 10s and 20s all as a QB
He did the '90's as QB - in college at Michigan.

Blanda, Montana, Marino,Namath,Kelly and Unitas all in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. All 6 from a 90 mile radius in western Pennsylvania.
So he's basically the NFL'S Gordie Howe

Look at that Raiders helmet. Nowadays players would be scared to get on the field with a skimpy helmet like that.
