      Hey Shafioras, after the repair 4 yrs ago, did it hold up well?

      Do they have any other weaknesses?

    I personally have replaced the output shaft bearing in the rear engine cover of Rocket 3, failed because was installed backwards from factory, with single shielded side of bearing preventing access to lubrication, coincidencely many bearings that have lack of lubrication last around 30,000 miles, such as Yamaha V-Star rear pulley bearing, BMW F-800 rear axle carrier

    I saw recently where someone managed to dismantle a final drive unit and replace that seal.
    He took it to a truck repair workshop and they used a big press ...some how and got it apart.

    Just a quick note. One of the causes of this problem is a poor/ under charged battery. If the starter doesn't manage to push the piston over compression, it kicks back against the sprag clutch and really hammers the boss on the gear, causing the marks. You very often see that the spring holding the rollers has gone 'baggy' so it stops the rollers gripping the boss as well.

    That's not great design by Triumph there. I'm sure you've probably thought of it but a seal conditioner fluid might work in this situation -- maybe get a few years out of it? I tried some on a Porsche 928 with a leaking rear crank seal and it worked to my surprise.

    I strongly recommend changing out the factory lubricants after just a couple thousand miles. Why? Did you see all that black junk coming out of the final drive? That's fine metallic particles (aka abrasives) from the gear mating surfaces. After those surfaces have "broken in" that metallic debris is considerably reduced. That first lube change is the most critical. I replaced my gear lube with a premium brand 100% synthetic 75W-90 gear oil.

    You don't know ? well I know. Manufacturers are moving towards 100% dealer only servicing & repairs by not supplying service information to non dealer service centres & making it extremely difficult to impossible for owners to do repairs due to the requirement of special fastener tooling to do basic repairs. Maybe in this case get 2 1/4" steel plates, cut semi circles in both, slide them around the inner shaft held vertically in hydraulic press then press inner shaft & entire assembly away from splined drive collar..

    Sounds about right with the price, I know bmw reconditioned final drives are £595 from motorworks depending on which model, and probably over £1000 new so £1162 from fowlers seems about right for a final drive for a rocket3, by looking at the parts picture though, i dont know if that includes the internals, it would be interesting to see.
    people need to know that if the price of new bikes are constantly going up each year, then the parts are as well when they break. and you never know, it mite have been leaking since new from the out put seal, or at least over the last 5-10,000 miles or more in to the swing arm drive shaft space, and then every time some one breaks hard it sloshing up the inside of the casing, till finally dripping out the end.
    and you would'nt really know apart from who ever changes the final drive oil, should have noticed how much old gear oil was coming out, but if it was minor loss then again you probobaly would'nt know, o well good work jim, the customer will just have to suck it up and have a sit down when you tell them. I would be really interested to see what happens mate.

    • @SuperbikeSurgeryTV
      @SuperbikeSurgeryTV  2 роки тому +1

      It's was leaking EP Gear Oil, not Engine Oil. Unless someone had filled the engine with gear oil (which they hadn't) it could only have come from the final drive. So "Clearly" you are incorrect 😁 Thanks for the comment 👍

    • @ikkieman

      seeker143 I disagree. The price for no chain is a extra 8 percentage point power drop fro the double right angle displacement of power.
