When I used to commute into London I picked up a puncture in a new tyre with only 50 miles on it. Got it plugged and rode 6000 miles by which time it was worn out anyway. No issues. Biggest problem is finding a dealers that are happy to do the repair.
A lifetime ago i had an Avon Roadrunner suffer a complete front tyre tread separation at around 180kmh on a country road. Changed my attitude to tyre manufacturers and the trust we give them. I have repaired Bridgestone BT41’s myself on my old commuter 1250 Bandit which picked up the occasional screw from the back of some lazy tradie’s hilux 😒 Never had one fail. Insurance companies, pfffffft, they’d be the first ones up against the walls when the revolution comes…
Repaired Tyres on Bikes for 18 years then stopped 2 years ago as you say it's not worth the exposure to my Business, Excuse i give is my Insurance won't cover it anymore.. In that time tho i never had one fail..
I've used loads of the stick type plugs. Done thousands of miles on them and never had one fail. And only ever had one hole that was too big for them, so I patched it from the inside.
I made a video about using tire sealant and it works great. In usa we don't gave a standard for repairing tires at all. The tire is assumed to be unfixable and we are risking something if we use a plug. Ride on tire sealant works fine. For reference, there is a guy named moonfleet41 in britain and he does repairs with sealant.
Used to pick up nails all the time on my R1 (City commute) had several plugs in several tyres. No problem at all and that's a seriously quick machine. Scaremonger's are either naive or money to burn!
I had a puncher on my rear Pirelli rosso 3, and it only had a few hundred miles on it, so I bought a puncher plug kit off of amazon, and it did exactly what it said it would, no problems
Had long tailed mushroom plugs with tool for plugging tyres from the outside, going back about 20 years. when I ran out couldn't buy them as they were dangerous. my record was 6 in one tyre. . Now I buy part worn and repaired part worn off fleebay. carry the plug kit you showed and a pump for roadside. ultraseal is very good. took off a warn out tyre that had 3 punctures I did not know about. ( after running a hammer head around the inside of the carcass, snagging on nails and screw) . I am more weary about front tyres, unless its is on the crown and a small hole I wont repair. just replace. never had a failure but if not sure I have been advised to put in a inner tube. Advice from a lorry tyre fitter. any advice about this?
i think its a case of what you feel comfortable with.i personally never get them repaired,i just dont like it.but i can appreciate why people do.tyres are expensive and if you're just pootling about, its probably ok!
Below is my experience copied and pasted from the forum i use . August 2017 About a month ago the Viffer's rear tyre picked up one of Screwfix's finest. Reluctant to bin an almost new tyre i looked at the various fixes and went with PuntureSafe (a liquid sealant) which used to be known as 'Ultraseal'. (cost £16 off ebay) The main reason i chose Punture-safe was because it claims to be a permanent fix for the life of the tyre, unlike the plugs ect. and also there is no speed restriction. (Punture-safe claim 150mph tested) The other thing i don't like about the 'plug type' of fix is that in order to fit them you've got to first make the hole bigger! turning what was a semi sealing slowish puncture into a rapid deflation situation should the plug ever let go, never mind the additional damage caused to the cords and ply by enlarging the hole. Because i got the puncture before installing the sealant (Most install it as a preventative) i simply added the required amount through valve stem and spun the tyre up (easy to do with a centre stand) then inflated it. And up it has remained with no air loss what so ever for 600 miles. Punture-safe say you can add it 'post puncture'. Riding with it... At first i was a little paranoid it would let go / go down... but after a couple of weeks of absolutely no air loss my confidence in the product grew and now ride in my usual manner of 70 - 80 and on the odd occasion 90+ No air loss No vibration Won't freeze (tested a sample in the freezer) Permanent fix. Washes away with water come tyre change time. I change my own tyres so wont't be pissing off the tyre fitter... apparently some places charge an extra ten quid if they know its in the tyre!!!! (any old excuse to money grab) Will i use it again? Only if i have a puncture... once this tyre is spent i'l be fitting a new one with just air installed :)
Would I plug a tire on a bike that goes 300km/h ? The answer is no ! Would I plug a tire if I were a millionaire ? The answer is no ! Instead I had a service truck with you in it on a golden salary following me around all the time..... But I am poor and so I plug and luck or skill never had an issue yet.
Here in South Africa the same no mandatory regs around the tire plugs but the insurance industry when reviewing after an incident will make a decision if they would honor any claims due to a faulty plug repair etc
Not had a problem with that type of plug. Do it myself(bypasses BS bulls't) just get a tyre place to take off rim. I use a drill bit and also put glue on plug shaft. Normally it's the rear, I'm a bit more cagey about doing fronts. My repair my risk. 👍
Do you have to remove any backing/cover material from the plug before you put it in ? Is there something on there to protect the vulcanising solution that is on the plug ?
If you know how to repair tyres properly and know how to use the glue it won't fail, I have fixed loads of bike tyres but I have learned through trial and error not to use mushroom plugs on them. The plugs aren't so bad on the hard touring tyres but when you get in to sports touring tyres they can be so soft that the rubber stalk can be hard enough to destort the tyre round it and I have seen the ribe grind through the band's In the tyre (knackering it) because your trying to open the hole out big enough to get the stalk through it. I have only ever seen bad repairs (not mine!) fail. It is surprising how many tyre fitters don't know how to do it properly and generally these are the ones that refuse to fix them. The only tyres I won't repair are track/race tyres as I'm not so sure the repair will take the sustaind heat - low tyre pressure and speed.
Can I use one of these from the outside in? Without taking the tire off? I don't need it to be permanent just get me to the tire shop to put a new tire on
There's a few tyre sealant things similar to Slime stuff that claim to plug tyres with high speed constraints (unlike the 50 MPH temporary plug limits) and consider themselves to be permanent for the life of the tyre, have you had any experience with these?
HELL yes! Because the TIRES ALWAYS go flat right AFTER you buy A NEW one dammit! So I have had to buy ANOTHER one! Now I’m D O N E doing this! BECAUSE THE TIRE COSTS $240!!!! So then I have to buy ANOTHER $240 TIRE? No WAY!!! So I purchased a Tyer Puncture Repair kit that inserts a mushroomed sized plug into the Tire! I have a Z rated tire. Furthermore when I replace my rear tire. I replace the front tire too! Yeah dealer waited till I drove all the F-way home to call me about not repairing the tire. So I had to pay the Bastard! Because I took the dam tire OFF! Screw the dealer!
If it's in the 25% wide gap from the centre of the tyre, there are no problems with just plugging and inflating. You can ride happily on that until you need to replace the tyre. Anything else is only a temporary repair and it would need replacing asap
Repaired many tyres in my forty plus years of riding, never had one fail including track day's at 180 mph. I'm not dead yet and still patching tyres🤔 Up to individual choice🤔
😂😂 This is somewhat a reminder of debates that I have heard about $50 helmet versus $800 helmet. I assume that each individual knows better than I what his head/welfare is actually worth.
I'm just going through Jim's old videos - he's a top bloke and has great knowledge, every video's a winner 👍🏻
Yeah I rode around on a rear tyre that had a mushroom plug in it for about 6 months and I'm still here to talk about it.

180Km / hr on a country road....???
Repaired Tyres on Bikes for 18 years then stopped 2 years ago as you say it's not worth the exposure to my Business, Excuse i give is my Insurance won't cover it anymore..
In that time tho i never had one fail..
I use gummy worms and carry a mini compressor.
I've used loads of the stick type plugs. Done thousands of miles on them and never had one fail. And only ever had one hole that was too big for them, so I patched it from the inside.
Don't you have to use the stick type play/patches from the inside always ?

I have used two repair kits on my z rated tyre and it has not in any way stopped me doing 130 on my 125. Happy days.

I'm a bit late to the party but great insight to proper tyre repairs, cheers Jim.

No air loss
No vibration

Permanent fix.
Washes away with water come tyre change time.

😂😂😂 love the sound effects of the screw coming out.. yet another fantasic video.. 👍👌

Z rated Michelin can be repaired with a maximum of 6mm ,
Great video mate , nice info 👍🏼
You’re a brave man bringing this subject up 😉. Good demo of puncture repair though. 👍🏻
Here in South Africa the same no mandatory regs around the tire plugs but the insurance industry when reviewing after an incident will make a decision if they would honor any claims due to a faulty plug repair etc
Using a JIS screwdriver on a Phillips screw 🫤
Not had a problem with that type of plug. Do it myself(bypasses BS bulls't) just get a tyre place to take off rim. I use a drill bit and also put glue on plug shaft. Normally it's the rear, I'm a bit more cagey about doing fronts. My repair my risk. 👍
great point at the end there regarding roadside kit repair rendering the tyre unrepairable, thanks.
With plug in the rear tire I reach 215 km/h no problem at all just make sure your psi it's between the specs
What size reamer would I need for a 4mm size plug?
Builders vans spewing screws on our roads 😞

I just got a piece of debris incrusted in my motorbike tyre. I pulled out but the tyre is not losing air. Do I still need to repair it ?
Can I use one of these from the outside in? Without taking the tire off? I don't need it to be permanent just get me to the tire shop to put a new tire on
Thankyou Jim...That was great...
Great video as always!
Great vid thanks James.
great camera work in the end fella - ye'd nout to be worried about

I used the tire fixer and made a video about it. Tire went another 4,000 miles.
I personally would change tyre.
@Hairy Mary McWobble Knockers depends on how your riding suppose.
For my riding and Doing track days ect no way il trust it
@@greggan100 why? With viulcanizing glue it’s one with the tire.
Mine has a nail in but not deflated should I just leave it in ?
Definitely not, you need to pull it out before you ride again. Your life is worth more than the cost of a new tyre.
HELL yes! Because the TIRES ALWAYS go flat right AFTER you buy A NEW one dammit! So I have had to buy ANOTHER one! Now I’m D O N E doing this! BECAUSE THE TIRE COSTS $240!!!! Funny screw removal sound 😆
People get way over worked up about patches. The second a s third world laughs at us .

Just us a 6mm plug.
Take the TIRE OFF?! WTF? Who does that anymore?!
BS AU 159
😂😂 This is somewhat a reminder of debates that I have heard about $50 helmet versus $800 helmet. I assume that each individual knows better than I what his head/welfare is actually worth.
Jim be choochin, go figure!
Simply nooooo
You remind me of Rick in Rick and Morty lol
TOO big! 2 O's.
Why use 10 words when 10,000 will do. I'm up to 3 minutes and cannot watch more.
🤣🤣 Sorry... I do like the sound of my own voice!
Another waste of time talking bollox. Just get on with it!
Thank you so much for your positivity 🤣🤣
