- It was great to get back to Hanoi after two years of border closures. In this video, I take a look at how the city is recovering from a traveller’s perspective, check out some of my old haunts and catch up with friends - Nga and Liem from Collective Memory, Jimmy Pham from KOTO and Nguyen Qui Duc from Tadioto.

Hanoi - historic and filled with unbelievable raw charm! May my favorite city continue to rise and recover from its losses.
This is great to see, I am sure the country will make a full recovery. I cannot wait to get back there. By far my favourite country in the world. Thanks for posting this 🤘
Thanks Welsh Hobbit and best with your travels.
As a Hanoian living far from home, your video postcard warms my heart. Please continue to love our country and people!
Cảm ơn chú Mark! ❤
Thanks @phuong-anh11. Very pleased to know that.
Trip down memory lane for me tour leading Intrepid groups right on your coat tails. Feel blessed to have lived there back then🙏🏼
Wonderful to see this jewel of a city coming back alive. Great intro video to Hanoi!!!
I visited Hanoi back in 2019, partly using info. from your videos. And to my surprise, it ended up being my favorite city of all time. From older men playing badminton at 8am, to young people running all kinds of new shops, it's full of genuine people striving to doing something with their lives. It's just so full of life, and I think that's something that will always endure.
Great to hear Timothy. Thanks.
Thanks!
Thank you Drew. And extra thanks for being my first ad-hoc donor. Very grateful! 🙂
It’s an amazing video. UA-cam algorithm should show your videos to more people.
Thank you. Appreciate the feedback
We are all grateful to those who helped us survive through the pandemic. Those who could not make it, are always in our hearts and minds.
After the rain, it shines 🙂 Was back in September to trek around Su Phi. Had a a great meal at the still very quiet Koto Villa with a friend. Can't wait for next time in Hanoi.
Hanoi ... still one of my top 3 cities . thank you for the video. Cant wait to get back there ...
Thanks Peter.
Thank you great video. We love Hanoi, been there many times and even lived there for 9 months 10 years ago. Wish I could speak Vietnamese like you do.

This is wetting my appetite for my first visit in 2.5 years next month
Travel well Thomas.
You deserve a lot more views. Great content and very informative. I’m doing SE asia trip for the next 6 months so your videos are very helpful. Didn’t realise Vang Vieng was dangerous in the 90s!
Wow what an interesting perspective. Not merely as a foreigner but as a person who has learned the culture and the people and getting the chance to see how they’ve change through the decades
Thanks Bobby. Appreciate the feedback.
Your videos are always amazing and filled with positive energy. Enjoy your trip!
Thanks Jason 🙂
I m taking my partner to visit Hanoi where I was originally from in the end of this year, and we both can’t wait! So glad I came across your video, will definitely visit some of these locations.

Happy to see you back to VN on UA-cam, wishing you safe and happy traveling.
Thanks Minh!
I'm equally happy to see Rusty Compass vlogs returning as I am to see the city of Hanoi rebounding. Beautiful postcard! My wife and I are finally returning to Viet Nam in November and this video makes us look forward to it even more. May only have time for the south this trip as we are scouting for a place to kick off our retirement in a couple of years. [Vung Tau is a leading contender, Hanoi in the mix as well.] Thanks for the excellent and enjoyable video. Much appreciated...looking forward to more. Safe travels!
Thanks Michael.
Nice to see you back Mark, Hanoi cant wait to get back, a great city.

This was such an uplifting video. My sisters and I are going to Hanoi this month. We're also making roundtrips to Sapa, Hoi An and Ninh Binh. We were born in Vietnam but adopted as babies and have not had the opportunity to come back in 17 years. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm.

@@rustycompasstravel Hope to see you in Da Nang and Hoian
Beautiful Hanoi, the OLD Quarter was the second place on earth I visited outside Australia, the bedlam, the madness but I have never felt so relaxed in my life. Still my favourite place ever, and miss it terribly. The people there are the most friendly and genuine. Thanks for the fantastic memories from the video. I am so glad they are surviving and can't wait to visit again one day.
Thanks David. Great to read of your Hanoi memories.
Lâu lắm rồi mới xem video của chú về Việt Nam
Great to see you back in Vietnam, Mark. I'm looking forward to more of you fine travelogues and hopeful that I can finally get to Da Nang in February.
More on the way. Cheers.

Thanks Indie Traveller. Glad you share our love of Hanoi.
Thanks, Mark, again for the great video and the guitar tunes in the background are played by you, right? And the awesome still shots could all be a poster series about Hanoi! Hope to be back in Vietnam soon and I will definitely check in with OldCompass ;)
Thanks Tobias... Yes, I recorded some little tracks during COVID that I'm using. Travel well!
Just discovered your channel
Greetings from freezing 🥶 Melbourne 🇦🇺
LOVE you vids
Seriously considering doing a 12 month stint in Hanoi
Using it as a base , to see Vietnam 🇻🇳
Thanks Marqui. Hanoi's a great base for exploring Vietnam - especially the incredible far north.
My wife and I visited Hanoi in March of 2020, just before the borders closed. Our flight back to Singapore got cancelled and things were chaotic to say the least. It warms my heart to know that most of locals held on and things are returning to normal again. Thanks for the wonderful video, Mark.
Thanks Derek.
Good to see you back!
Welcome back 🖐
Thanks Desh
Great video love it.
Cheers PP.
I’ll travel to Vietnam April 1, as a tourist, I was in HCM city and I enjoyed it very much I’ve never been to Vietnam before. Yes the citizens were very curious when they saw An American tourist . I thoroughly enjoyed my vacation and I will be back. It is one of the easiest countries to enter
And E visa, And passport. You can’t get much easier than that.
Thanks for sharing. I’ve been wondering how the situation there is like now. Will be heading back to Hanoi next month and I can’t wait to visit the place I fondly declare my second home.
Your videos are great, I wish I could do like that. I mean, the colors, music, pitch, angles...
Thanks Sharif. Best wishes!
