do you by any chance teach freediving ? I've always wanted to dive for crays , we've been catching nice size ones from a pole for years at Cape Point Nature reserve. diving seems like a beautiful experience
When you come to NZ feel free to contact me to go out. I grew up in Chad and when my family came back " home" diving became my passion for the Last 40+ years I live in Auckland. There has been a great loss of diversity and quantity of sea life during this time. Cheers Andrew
Unfortunately yes, apparently they were much more abundant and larger a whie back. Soon I'll be heading to New Zealand though and I will get the opportunity to see some impressive crays.
Cray minimum size is controlled by the ministry of fisheries but they do not stop the rampant commercial sector raising commercial catch limits and reducing the private citizen. The cray population is on the edge of collapsing where 10 years ago I would be able to find my bag limit of 6, now rare to get 3 "new bag limit" .
It is very much the same here in South Africa. As the minimum size for crays are a 8cm carapace for the private individual in comparison with the commercial 5cm, which is below the adult breading size for our West Coast Rock Lobster.

I would honestly just invite you to the spot and show you around, it is extremely beautiful.
