Reminiscing about diving the South Coast and saw this channel. Spearfished and dived the Natal Coast until we left for Oz in 1994 when I was 40. From Durban but lived down the South Coast when I taught at Sheppie High. Nice to see there are still crays around! Umtentwini was a spot I always got my 8 crays. At 70 I just snorkel to look now!
You guys have it easy on East coast man, beautiful viz and the reefs are easy to picks the bugs.... you need to come to West Coast, CPT.... so much kelp - but lots of fun nonetheless!
Great video! I'm moving down to Durban end of Feb. I've joined mates before during free diving crayfish and catching with nets in Bettysbay. I haven't free dived and caught lobster myself before and very keen to learn and try it out. Any advice on good spots to look for as a beginner and where to buy all the gear please? I would guess it is not a good idea to dive alone, especially at first, even though I'm a good swimmer. Is there a club or group of guys that I can join to learn more. Thank mate. Nick
Thank you! I've heard awesome stories about Betties Bay. So Durban is good place to start, with winter coming up the viz should start improving soon, there are various reefs that you could start on. Best to join a local spearfishing club or WhatsApp group. There is a Facebook page called spearfishing junkie with some 2nd hand equipment to start off with!
This is a valuable lesson yes! Always just take what you need. I had a big family braai that I needed to cater for so I took my limit. But like as above only take what you need when you need! 🐟

Nice fishing man. I guess South Africans call lobsters crayfish. Crayfish everywhere else are freshwater lobsters and much smaller.
Correct 😅 not sure why though!
