    Confidence is a state of mind, but it doesn't define the limits of the bike itself, and 160mm is more than most people who aren't hitting double blacks every weekend need.

    I got a bigger travel bike, 170 front and rear. It is not the best for climbs or technicals, which I do a lot, but I don't care. This bike brings a smile to my face for all types of trails I throw at it.

      And if someone with a trail bike is faster than you, you just have to think about the next enduro bike holiday with your beloved bike and you smile even more :) when I had a trail bike I even was sad when riding slow stuff because I had to think about how underbiked I would be in the next enduro holiday

      100% agree! I’d much prefer to struggle a bit more on the climb in order to have all that big bike confidence and playfulness on the downhill 🤙🏻

    I have the Hugene CF 150/140. I absolutely love it. I love doing tours, pedaling uphill and shredding nice trails down. For the occasional bikepark trip still all I need from a bike.

    On a limited budget there is no question: Trail bike with an extra suspension. You can always lock a bit of suspension and have a spare easier rolling tires to put on. You go to bikepark - get it ready for it switching tires back. If you can stretch it - buy yourself set of stiffer rims for those gnarlier rides.

    I think the question for trail vs Enduro travel arises from overrating its effect. Wheel/tyre combo is much more important.Except you only ride easy trails get an enduro+and extra wheel/tyre combo that’s light and fast. For trail riding you put on the latter one and pump up your rear shock a little and set your bike in the high position and you already have 90% of a trail bike . If you go in the park you take the enduro wheelset and low setting. If you have to distinguish between really easy trail riding and hard enduro you could also have an air shock with 60mm travel and a coil with 65 (if 65 is max travel) or run for trail riding a volume spacer more. If you ride 3 times a week and this is too much effort you will have 2 bikes anyway

    I’m a Hardtail fan (I ride one right now) BUT! If I have to choose probably I pick the TRAIL BIKE descents are spicy when you have to rely on your skills as well. Cheers mates! Great vid (as always!)

    I ride a Commencal Clash Signature . Yes I am over biked in most places that I ride, that being said it rides and pedals better than a big bike should. It is still very snappy and tons of fun on almost every trail. Ride , rinse, repeat.

    I bought a trail bike 115/130 3 years ago. Those #'s are XC now but I still love it and take it to bike parks every season. It's funny to smoke my two brothers who ride 160 enduros.

    My ride partner rides a hardtail with 120 mil front sus. The maker is Niner. He rides absurd trails that I wouldn't imagine most would try on any bike. Next he's going solid forks and chrome molly frame. Says it helps with technique to have less suspension. It sure helps on the climb too.

      more travel will mess with you technique's timing and also require more strength for the same amount of effect .
      but as you know all things MTB its about compromises an balance

    Its such a debate..i think 160 front and 150 rear is sweet spot (enduro for me) and would love to see what professional riders think as an all round bike not sure they would be any slower or quicker on a typical blue red or black trail 🤔🤔?

    Thanks guys, just wish it was longer and more detailed. Sounds like the weather may have cut it short. #GMBN For the most part we all know trails 1 and 3 less is better but, with trail 2 it would have really been good to see you guys switch bikes and give specific feedback on feel for specific features. I would like to see this one revisited with a third rider of less skill and a third bike with 160/150-160 and focus more on trail type 2 and feel. We all know Blake could have done it on a hardtail. 🙂

    I have Devinci Troy aka quiver killer with 140/150 travel, works great pretty much every were, has plenty of progression for jumps and drops, pedals and climbs well, fits me/my riding like a glove.

    I have a 150mm/140mm trail bike and couldn't see myself ever needing more even on the big jumps and doubles. As I got faster though, I'm starting to need more travel not because the hits are bigger but because they happen more frequently and faster. Increasing rebound speed helps not bottoming out mid-trail but it can only help up to a point where a bit more travel would take the slack.

      Sounds like you could add some more bottom out tokens to your suspension. Increasing your rebound is not the best move, you more likely to go OTB if its to fast.

    I only have my Stoic 140mm hardtail, right now it's more capable than myself but I plan on going to a bike park this year.
    I'll probably take a loaner bike or something there (maybe after trying out on the Stoic, as that park is said to be very beginner friendly, even the reds/blacks being considered weak)

    I own a Norco Optic and very happy with it... sure having a bike with a bit more travel would be great at times, but for the trails I ride most around Zurich it's plenty.

    My Spindrift is an absolute beast. I love it. It is a big different what tires you putting on. I ride the assegai and dhr2 in DD maxx grip. So than you know what you have to do when you paddeling up. But on the way down for me, it is best choice. 🔥🤙

    I've always preferred 170/160 bikes. Had a transition patrol(last gen), then went to a norco range and found that to be too much with the high pivot and all and then i ended up on a rocky mountain altitude and that was just flawless. Took it EVERYWHERE and it never complained. Literally not a single broken part on the bike

    I got a canyon spectral 29 2023 the version with 160 mil front and 150 rear and i'm considering it the jack of all trades in my local trails

      i got the same bike. i can't imagine any trails this bike can't ride. i used to ride downhill trails with my friends on a 26" 150mm bike. it did it fine. i imagine the spectral will eat it up even better.

      @@sultanabran1 true I've had rides where I've gone beyond my limit and lost control and think I'm gonna crash, but the Spectral just laughs at me, carries on eating it up wanting more as I recover from what I thought was impending doom.

    Well, if I had to choose just one, I'd go with the Tyee. But for now I went with the Hugene and the Spindrift and have loved both of them.

    Well. Thing is some 120/140 bikes feel plusher or more active than 160+ bikes.
    Travel is your personal choice following the terrain you ride on.
    Quality of travel is universal 😜

    160/150mm Trek Remedy 27,5 is perfect for my riding (trails, street and bikepark). You can do what ever you want with it and it climbs really good. 😌

    I got a Hugene during the Black Friday sale at an amazing deal. I kinda wish I had got a Tyee just cause I’m planning on moving to a state with much chunkier trails, but it still feels super capable.

    Yep, I have just brought a 170/160 bike as my pedal bike at the age of 59. I do own an ebike, but love peddling and desending still on normal bikes.

    I have 130-150 mm trail bike,and honestly the older I am the more I like new generation of downcountry bikes, like new epic evo or rocky mountain element.
    They allow you to ride hard due to modern geo, but they are also light and nimble. I dont do a lot of jumps, and prefer pedaling, so those kind of bikes are good for me.

    15+ years ago in my teens i would ride everywhere on a single crown freeride bike and pedal it up fromme on weekends. These were old school freeride bikes (Richie Schleys 2003 RMX i got second hand haha), no way i could do that now.
    Had a full on DH bike (flatline) that i raced a bit and a hardtail (cowan) that i put a 120mm fork on and trail build.
    Traded the hardtail for an actual dirt jumper then sold that and got an old but blazing fast XC full sus (2005 element another ex team rocky).
    At this point I wasnt shuttling or racing DH so i was riding the XC bike a lot i built it really nice but only 100mm in the front and i think 90 in the back. I was so confident in that bike i would ride crazy north shore double blacks people would be double taking looking at my bike haha.
    I stopped riding for a few years and just recently got myself a 2018 carbon altitude that is pretty built! First non 26” bike ive owned. Its 160mm up front and 150 rear 27.5 wheels and 28 pounds! Definitely the fastest and most capable/versatile bike ive owned. I was really considering trailbike because i had so much fun on my XC bike but i have always wanted the big altitude and im definitely not as sharp as i was at my peak so a little extra bike is definitely helping me out on descents haha!

    My Nimble 9 gets ridden more often, but I definitely have more fun on my Megatrail. The Foes Mutz is a whole different application altogether.

    in my opinion the modern trail bike, decends much better than enduro bikes pedal. and they decend essentially as well as an enduro bike. even 130mm travel bikes decend pretty much as well as enduro bikes these days.

      @@aliens1990990 Who says how one "should' set up ones suspension (remember bikes didnt have any suspension back then)? I, for example, like my suspension hard, for that I never botton out, then why shouldnt I get a bike with shorter travel that for sure comes lighter and more playful. I really didnt plan getting into a conversation about it. Im sure companies have tried that but they aslo want to sell a prodact that one might not surely need. again, I would say its entertaining to see that experiment(key word) on youtube.

    I love my radon jab 10.0 hd 160/160 front and rear. I ride park, street and trails, it is so playfull on jumps and the agility you get out of those 27,5" rims is unbeatable in my opinion, it is also superlight, like 13 kg

    my first bike was 130/130 mm 29er and I always felt underbiked.
    Even in my local flat spot. in mountains hands just were numb in a couple of decends. Some rocky sections caused pain & suffer.
    Sold it and got 170/170 27.5er. Now feel way more confident and way more nimble.
    As for climbing - new one is OK. When it comes to climbing - it is all about rider and his/her endrunce.
    Normally can climb up to 800m which is faar above average in local mtb comminity ..

    trail / enduro bike to do it all. 150rear 160 front is a brilliant allrounder. Brilliant for flying up the hills and charges through whatever you throw at it on the downs.

    Got a downhill bike with 200mm front and 170mm rear. But i dont do downhill. I do jumps and trail. Sometimes distance but i dont care cause i like the bike and how it looks. :D loved it from the first second i saw it. A canyon Torque DH CLLCTV

    i run a 180/170 travel NP Giga with the Mary on the front and the Big betty on the rear its a bitch to climb with (although think it could be due to nackered wheel bearings) however it decends well. infinite grip and so much confidence with it! worth every penny. i also have a Enduro Hard tail Pipedream Moxie can be run as 140mm or 160mm. The trails i run with that the bike feels throttled at 140 but does open up more with the 160.

    Putting Hardtail Blake on the bigger bike is PERVERSE. I ride NorCal babyhead chunder on a Tallboy 4 with a 140mm Pike Ultimate and a Cascade Link for 128mm out back and it's more capable than I am...

    140mm Hardtail for Hometrails and smaller Parks, 170mm Superenduro for the big parks in the alps. But if i where allowed to have only one, it definatley would be the Trailhardtail.

    I’m riding a canyon spectral 125 in the rear 140 in front and for 95% of my riding it’s kinda of to much but it’s good enough for me to have for when it’s time to hit the trail

    Wasn't that long ago when 150mm was thought to be "overbiked" for a trail such as the first one (Let's go for a ride)? I don't mind so much that "trail bikes" have become bigger though, in that 150 range now which was more thought to be all-mountain/enduro a decade ago. I think that extra squish over the 120 and 130 trail bikes is worth the extra size/weight. These new enduro/super enduro bikes of the past few years are monsters!

    I currently ride a 29er trail bike with 130 front and 120 rear. I have ridden big travel bike in past and enjoyed its capability when things get rowdy. Thats why im thinking to modify the fork travel of my trail bike to a sweet spot by increasing it to 150 mm from 130. Wondering if thats a good idea considering my rear travel is 120mm. What do you suggest?

    For what it’s worth ride , 125 to 150 suits me perfectly, more than that i find im just bobbing along on the climbs and staits . I just ordered a RSD wildcat frame and i think it will be perfect for me .

    I think rider skill level comes into it also. I seem to remember BK saying he could ride most WC DH tracks on a 130mm bike. I’m running 150mm front and 150mm rear on a XXL Hightower LT. I’ve considered going up to 160mm on the front but my legs provide the extra travel on the rear 🤘❤️🌈🕊️🌍

    If the 160 front and rear of my bike isn't enough suspension travel I can guarantee you more suspension travel with my skill level wouldn't get me out of the trouble I seemed to have found myself in

    In real life a 120 mm is enough for 98,69% of the average trail rider!

    I just recently went from 100mm travel fork, 1x 10 gears, lightweight XC hardtail with 29 inch wheels to more of a hard core hardtail with 140mm forks, 1x12 gear set, 27.5 inch wheels and it has a dropper post and the more aggressive bike definitely suits me better despite being much heavier. It's more agile and can hit much harder terrain and still get up hills like they're no challenge. I needed the heavier bike as I did break stuff on the lighter bike.

    I have it all covered. Santa Cruz Megatower “Enduro” 170/165 and a Santa Cruz Hightower “Trail” 150/145. I’m ready for whatever trails I’m going to ride.

    130 trail bike does everything for me :) but some times i like 100 xc fast bike for fun ride.

    I have a beefed up 150-135 trail bike and it can do everything from mellow trails to enduro. I think that components choice is almost as important as geometry for a bikes capability

I have an aluminium 2021 Giant Trance X29 with upgraded components, such as a Marzocchi Bomber Air shock, Shimano Saint brakes with Shimano Rt-86 rotors, Industry Nine hydra hubs with Raceface ARC Heavy Duty aluminium rims, Oneup carbon handlebar with a 32 Tenet stem, Maxxis Assegai 2.5 wt dd maxxgrip tyre front and a Minion DHR II 2.4 dd maxxterra back, Crankbrothers Stamp 11 large pedals, PNW Loam Dropper post, Shimano SLX drivetrain and I kept the stock Fox 36 OEM fork and the Giant Romero seat. With those components the bike is way more capable and versatile than with the stock components and I was able to buy them brand new really cheap because of the MTB crisis, for me it was cheaper and safer improving a bike that I already liked than changing it

    I'd argue that this topic is also influenced by the height and weight of the rider. A bigger bike is much easier to handle if you're a bigger, heavier rider. I ride the spindrift as well - a heavy Mullet build. And I'm quite fast uphill on it, only challenged by well trained XC riders. And for me it handles well on shallower, curvy trails. You just have to work a bit more at the start, to get it up to speed. But then it goes really fast.

    I will say this my 160mm Pike was the plushest fork I’ve ever had on a mtn bike. Way plusher than my 140mm Fox 34 on my current bike. But that is the difference between 27.5 and 29 wheels.

    I would pick the propain tyee cf as my do it all bike it’s basically the best of both worlds it goes comfy uphill and plows back down the spindrift ist more a enduro park bike/ race bike its too much travel for long uphill rides but for short bursts of uphill its ok but on the downhill where you most of the time can make seconds its an absurde fast bike (ive raced a santa cruz nomad 4 and a specilazed enduro before) especially when you start to really push it only downside is had was mid stroke suspension in the back (coil damper) but with a couple of tweaks it was really good but you have to push the bike to get a nice confidence inspiring back end

    I really hate that suddenly propain has become gmbn’s new bike to promote, as of now they’re still reasonably priced but let’s see how long that lasts. And I really don’t think in the end this worked out well for Nukeproof either, as I personally started looking at other brands as their popularity and prices increased.

    Fat tire ebike ( 4" so not too fat lol ) 170 front and 140 I think ( I put a better shock on it ) but it works well for me, thing's a 40mph beast.

    Reading these comments crack me up. So many people think the more travel the better. This is mostly true for inexperienced or beginner riders only. I’ve been riding & in the industry for over a decade so I get to ride all brands & diff travel bike models. If you know what you’re doing you don’t need the extra hindrance of a large travel bike unless you’re good enough to ride the trails that need it. I see soooooo many riders at the local trails riding/putting these 170mm+ travel bikes going slower than molasses. It’s like driving a race car on the freeway going 30mph under the speed limit. What’s the point? Lol

    On my bike I have 170/180mm front and 146mm on the rear. 2022 Giant Reign bought October 2023

    I think this question is more skill related than people think. Efficiency is a valid point, but if you’re spending anytime at a bike park and unskilled, bigger travel gives you more margin for error. Everyone wants to ride and go home at the end of the day, and as theres something to be said about the inverse relationship of skill to travel. The more skilled you are, the better you can manage your line choice and minimize risks at the park and handle rough lines or big gaps with less suspension.

    So what about the Tyee...its between these two.
    It absolutly depends on your riding style. I would say a downhill bike for park and shuttle laps and a 160/160mm Enduro for trail riding.

    I have a HT 100, 65/100, 120/120 and a 150/150 but if I had to have only one, prefer a 100/100 like my old 2018 era Top Fuel 9.8

    Swiss Army knife bikes are the best. I ride 150/150 Scott genius for mountain. And a gravel Speedster for tarmac/gravel.

      Have a carbon tyee. Love it. Big mountain descents, bike parks, climbs, jumps all feel awesome. It is the best of my two previous bikes in one - YT Tues and Pyga Oneforty.
