The dance is done to that most beautiful of classic tangos, "El Choclo"

He's like a completely different actor and person in the old-old movies. I'd never recognize him if I didn't know from these video titles. My impression of George Raft is from the black-and-white tough guy roles much later on, seen on late night TV when I was a kid. I didn't think he was remotely attractive. I did think he seemed like a nice guy, but I thought he looked painfully self-conscious and unhappy. I wanted Humphrey Bogart, BUT was glad he wasn't Mr. Cagney whom I never liked a bit. This earlier George Raft stuff is wonderful to discover. I love him.

George Raft had his spats on just like in “Some Like it Hot”. Is that a younger William Frawley?

That most certainly is a young Bill Frawley years before he played Fred Mertz in “I Love Lucy”.

Raft and Valentino sat together waiting for dances at the same place early on...Valentino ran from NYC to CA after legal issues; Raft stayed and danced longer, then went to Broadway...then to CA... the first wave of Valentino substitutes largely failed....Raft came a bit later and never wanted to try to be a sub for Valentino...but damned, his dancing was probably even better, we saw him do so much more of it and he was just as striking looking. What he "lacked" was the "exoticism and mystery" as he was American, direct and didn't exude "softness combined with danger" that had attracted women to Valentino. Like Valentino, he fought the studios, trying to escape typecasting and also making poor decisions...like turning down roles that would go to Bogart who played the game and picked up the pieces! Raft had a certain integrity, like not wanting to hit women and fighting to have the "bad guy" show some redeeming value...he often lost that one. The one time he hit a woman, Dietrich, I believe, she urged him to do so..and she wound up with a broken ankle...George had been a pro-boxer for about 14 matches so his punch was stronger than he would have liked!
