As a 67 year old living in the south, I’m delighted by things we have in common from the Portmeirion to a love of classic literature. Seeing this video, I have to applaud what you’ve said. My parents believed this & tho they began their life together struggling to have a lovely home, I was raised this way. It’s not about money & accumulating material things. It’s about treasuring the nice things you do have. My mom always set a beautiful table with very little. Long before my dad became successful, I thought we were rich b/c we had freshly ironed embroidered pillowcases. Thank you for promoting this.
My mother passed away when I was a pre teen. I navigated my teenage and early adult years without the proper feminine guidance a young woman needs. Your videos help me a lot.
When the pandemic hit and we went into lockdown, I was shocked at how many were viewing it as a time to have a months-long pajama party, with unending snacks and Netflix binges. Instead I vowed to dress up everyday like I had somewhere to go. Hair, makeup, something cute to wear. It made a huge difference in my mood. We used the time to get lots done around the house, found a farm box delivery service and ate healthier than ever. While it was a terribly scary time, we weren’t going to let it take our dignity.
My mom had a dress that she bought in the 70's ( in her late 20's)which she kept long after she stopped wearing it and she would try it on every year to make sure she hadn't put on weight. If it was a bit snug feeling, she knew she needed to cut back on the food a bit. I must remember to ask her if she still has it.....
I am a teacher in Vancouver, and lately I have been made aware of children that eat in their bedroom in front of a screen, or bouncing around the living room. I grew up in a poor immigrant family and yet we always sat down for our meals, no matter how humble. I can not believe the breakdown of not only set mealtimes at a common area, but the slow degradation of family values.
I am 40 and live with my elderly mother. It is just the two of us usually but there's no question that the table is set and we sit down for meals, does not matter how simple or frugal it is. Even when I lived on my own I tried to avoid eating on the sofa or bed, I feel that such behavior will lead to be less mindful and organized in other aspects of my life too.

The destruction of society begins with the shaking and breaking of its religious and moral foundation and promotion of laissez-faire, casual attitudes particularly towards sexuality and its expression. The purpose is to divide and conquer, to make people dependent on the state for sustenance and look to them as authority figures. Since the 1960s we have been seeing this deliberately destructive social engineering creeping in and now it is accelerating. I just turned 68 and I just found this channel. I find it fascinating. This video was a true eye-opener. When I was first retired I had a bit more of a routine. Then I got sassy and said to myself, “I could do what I want when I want how I want and no one can boss me“. This was very liberating. However, over the years I have become a bit too relaxed and casual. On the days when my husband works, which is only two days a week now out of the house, I find myself lounging on my couch or sitting on my couch with my meal. Or eating lunch or snacking over The counter in the kitchen while I am multitasking. So I go from one extreme to the other. I’m either multitasking and eating at the same time which is not a good way to do it. Or I am a complete lounge lizard sitting on the couch eating. This video just made me chuckle because I could identify with many of the things said here! Picked up quite a few good tips too! And I’m surprised I let myself slip into these bad habits because while I was never super formal, as a very organized person I used to be a bit more intentional. And one of my pet peeves is the way people dress when they travel, particularly on an airplane. Sweat pants, pajamas, dirty feet in flip-flops, bed hair making them look like They just rolled out of bed and hopped on the plane. Lol I’m sorry I know I’m sounding Judgey but this and a few other things are really pet peeves of mine. This video was a good reminder that I can do better!
Great video. When I became a mother it dawned at me that if meals were only had at the dining table - not on the coach, not in bed - it helped keep my house cleaner! I never connected it with maintaining my weight, but, yeah.
Jennifer, it’s hard to imagine you EVER looking that way around your home, and mindlessly eating on the couch or over the sink, which is why I found it so funny! 😂
At 5ft 3/4in and 160#+, I knew I needed to loose weight. In my mind, at 53 years old and having lost 40 pounds two times in the last 20 years, this was going to be probably the last time I could lose the weight. I got a jump start to losing weight by having pneumonia for the first time for a full month in January this year and got down to 150 pounds. I decided to make that a guage and to never go above that weight. I also made my husband shake on it with me that he had permission to get firm with me if needed, if I went above that mark of 150 pounds. I had tried 8 hour window Intermittent fasting before and found I would not gain weight if I did it. I used that time to eat whenever and whatever I wanted. I however never lost any weight. I hated counting calories, making special meals and exercising, plus I did not have the energy to do so. Then I saw YOUR VIDEO...your 1 year update. WHAT!? I really don't have to count calories or exercise!!! This is great! Plus I get to have a mid day snack...I'm in! I am now at 139 pounds and that is my new guage...no going out of the 30's. Having three sensibly sized meals and one snack in an 8 hour period has been so helpful. Before I would skip meals to lose a pound only to be hungry all the time. In YOUR VIDEO, you ate well at each meal. It is amazing to eat so well and the weight come off! I now have energy and walk 3 miles a couple times a week. If anyone asks, I tell them about you and your way of eating. Your transparency and not making weight loss a program or huge ordeal has helped me to relax and actually lose weight. Going to continue this LIFESTYLE! Maybe I will have a good one year update too! May the LORD bless your household!
This is 100% true on the clothing front. Not wearing sweats and yoga pants with waistline hiding silhouettes is a great indicator of where my waist is going...I sew most of my" formal" clothes so I know exactly where I'm supposed to be.
@@TheDailyConnoisseur it came from wanting to stop adjusting my clothes. It seemed that only stretchy knit items were comfortable, but I even had to pull down my t shirts constantly because the space between my bust and shoulders is smaller that average (whatever that is). . I'm petite but muscular and absolutely nothing fit right. I now make even my t-shirts and lingerie. When I stand up, there's no digging anything out or adjusting anything. Much more ladylike in my opinion. It just seems very tacky to be digging to pull out my underthings. I didn't want to do that anymore. I love that I stumbled onto this channel. It seems so many influences are making life less formal and it shows. It's actual self care for me. It sets up long term good habits. Thank you!
In regard to our daywear, the same applies when we are sick. Just to get into daywear and adding a little cosmetics can raise my mood and energy level. How we appear, even when alone, does make a psychological difference. Thank you for continuing to enlighten us as to how we can be our best and enjoy our lives in small , elegant ways. It does make a difference. Life is hard. It is my job to create the joy and appreciate the other side of life. Life is a gift from God. Live your life showing appreciation for that precious gift. We have a very casual lifestyle but have always had our meals together at the table. Even when our son was in sports, we waited to eat until he got home from practice. We didn't do it to be formal, but we thought having a family meal together gave us the chance to talk about our day and keep up with what we were each doing.
This resonated with me so much! I broke my wrist in two places a couple of years ago, and I had to wear a cast for months. I couldn't wear pants that buttoned, so I lived in stretchy pants and tent like dresses. When I finally healed, I'd gained 15 pounds and I couldn't get into any of my clothes. I'm over 40 now and it was difficult to get that weight off. It's taken a year, but I'm 20 pounds down and much happier.
I absolutely agree with you, but the once in awhile slump on the couch (maybe when no one is looking 🤣) with a cookie can lend to balance IMO. You look pretty comfy on that couch.
I've never considered this concept before, but it makes so much sense. Thanks so much for posting this video and all that you do to help us become classier versions of ourselves. Too much of society doesn't care, and were surrounded by casual living so much we don't realize how much we let ourselves go.
I love how you couldn't even bring yourself to eat over the sink (while trying to display "goblin mode"). We have a guest house and I am SHOCKED at how so few of our guests use the dining table. I would say 95% of our guests either eat while sitting on the sofa or in bed. I really don't even understand why they would do that!?!?!??!
Jennifer! This is so profound and such an anchor! I think the thing that I miss and am longing for is structure. And the wisdom that you are sharing is priceless because it highlights the fact that as a culture we have become way too casual with our dress, with our homes, with our conversation, on and on. I think your video today is profoundly at the heart of why we have lost quality in life. And it is a bullseye for any of us who struggle with our weight. You mentioned boredom as well and I believe this is a key factor - the lack of structure. What is so needed is for people to have a sense of purpose and I believe this meets that need. Excellent points! Another 'problem' with eating inappropriately is the design of our homes. When it is all one big room -"open concept" then the food in the kitchen is always visually presented available. I notice that you have a separate kitchen and dining room, I think. I also think that is a good idea!
Here’s an interesting thought, Jennifer, that maybe you or others might agree with me on. Going along with living a formal life, looking presentable each day, setting the table, taking time out each day for a sit-down coffee/tea break, etc… is the concept of physically slowing down with doing tasks around the house. I got to thinking about this after going to the library and shopping downtown at a local, quaint gift shop. I noticed how the ladies I interacted with moved slowly and deliberately. Although these women were “older” in the sense that they were born before 1960, they were not slow because of old age, but they were slow because they were deliberate about each thing they were doing (counting the money, looking for something behind the cashier drawer, folding a receipt to put in my bag) It got me thinking about how quickly I move and do things around the house. I have 5 kids and I homeschool- while I do take time to do a lot of what you promote in these videos, I notice that I’m always moving in a rushed manner and when I slow down physically to take the time to do something like as if I’m NOT in a hurry, it really does something to the brain and mood. Does anyone know what I’m trying to describe or is it just me? 😂
I fully agree. I have noticed the same with me. When I am hurried towards finishing any chore I feel so much stressed from inside. I yell at my daughter for any xyz reason but when I set my intention to remain calm and composed I am able to finish my task with much ease and grace
I took a spill a couple of years ago after being in too much of a hurry while simultaneously allowing myself to become too fatigued that day. It scared me, because although I was not hurt in the fall, it easily could have gone another way. It made me think about Queen Elizabeth, and I wondered if anytime during her long reign, with so many public events, had she ever fallen? Well, I could not find a single recorded instance of her tripping, much less falling. That's when it dawned on me that she moves slowly and deliberately, and that's a good lesson for me. (Of course, in her life, everything revolves around her, so she's never in a hurry! That's not true in my life, but it's still an important lesson!)
I know exactly what you mean, especially as I do age more. I am so tired of being hustled through checkouts by fast-talking young women who are ok with the how are you today have a nice day thank you stuff but it is gabbled mechanically and the next persons things are being checked through when I am still checking and putting away my change and gathering my personal items before leaving. The words tumble out if their mouths, the ridiculous perspex screens now everywhere and the totally medically useless and harmful masks don't help either. I so hate going out shopping or even going somewhere for tea or coffee now. Life has lost its grace and care and for the most part been replaced with automaton empty words and platitudes.
@@taniacummings9207 Very well put! I agree. I think that’s why I prefer to be helped by the older ladies at the library or my favorite local bookstore and gift shops downtown where they actually take their time. (And wouldn’t you know, they’re all run by people in their 50’s or older)

Especially with kids, when there is order (not constant mess and chaos), they can appreciate the occasional picnic lunch on a blanket on the floor since it's special. Hey, that's a video idea! Good insight. The "you do you" phenomenon is not helping anyone. There are better and worse choices, and it doesn't all boil down to you and your feelings.
As a lady of 65, I was raised in a more formal environment you speak of. It wasnt a wealthy home by world standards but yet this way of living was possible then and continues for people in every group of life. It continues for me to this day and is one that brings me a restful, welcome, beautiful environment and mind. I've always said, it takes no more energy to pull on a baggy pair of joggers than a pair of nice trousers or skirt but the difference within is immeasurable.
This reminds me of my mother. She was very formal and I think of her a lot when I watch your channel. She wasn’t fancy but she was very conservative and we had dinner every night when my father came home.
This is great, definitely what I aspire to! As a mother who breastfeeds round the clock I do allow myself to snack whenever I am hungry, though. Once I am nursing less I'll need to be careful not to continue that habit, so these tips are very helpful.
Pip, nursing moms are excused! You have to do what you can, when you can. However, as your kids get older I strongly suggest a routine for everyday life..my mother did this, I did this and I hope my kids do this when they have kids!
Congratulations. I’m nursing a five month old who I feed applesauce and oatmeal to on days she seems to need it. I don’t know how old your baby is but at this stage I feel I’m able to get a lot done around the house and I’m eating a bit better as well. Having a three item to do list or a cleaning list helps with time management. Every nap is utilized to get things done. I also have two older Children ages 7 & 5 and babysit three others aged 12, 6 & 4. I love this channel because it reminds us to live beautifully and enjoy the things we buy not hoard them away as if they are too good for us to use. Anyways best of luck to you.
I love sweets! After reading your first book I decided to be more deliberate about sitting down at the table to enjoy dessert following my meal. Before, every time I passed by I would take a sliver of cake or slice of pie and before I knew it I'd eaten half by myself! Now my clothes are fitting better without even trying.
Setting a beautiful table is a way of saying “You are important enough.” Not just setting the table for occasions or when company is coming over. Set a beautiful table for one. Also if you are having a really bad day, dressing up in your cutest outfit will almost instantly raise your spirits. On a really bad day (like today) I like to go to a tea room and have afternoon tea. The whole process gives me something else to concentrate on and surrounds me with beauty and grace.

I put on a skirt and a freshly ironed T-shirt to go to the grocery store this morning and felt amazing! I didn’t even change when I got home either! Then I sat on my porch and ate lunch with my husband ☺️
Great video! I'm watching it waiting for my flight to take off at the airport. Goblin mode overload! When I grew up, we got dressed up to GO to the airport. I remember excitedly picking out my 'airport outfit'. It set the tone for the trip, in my opinion. Now, most people look like they are in pajamas. Makes me sad...
Exceptional segment. Very thought provoking. My mother is Canadian French and I was raised to live formally. Mom always wore a dress and added an apron when cooking or cleaning. This was a very inspiring video. With the advent of summer, we rarely adhere to meal schedules, or even cooking meals from scratch. When I visit grocery stores, fresh foods are being replaced by pre-made meals because no one cooks, including me. You have inspired me to change it up!! Thank you. P.S. whenever, however and whatever...no no! Eating while walking or on the couch is the norm in western societies. Thanks to you I have added many revisions to my life and everything is organised and working to plan. Today was long, I baked all morning and kept the house clean and I couldn't get ahold of my husband today since he was handling business things. So I decided to take my boys to chic fi la. So yes I was def sitting in my car both boys asleep in the backseat doing the opposite of chic...eating my food while watching this video...but It was in peace as they slept and I just sat parked under a beautiful flower tree. I did dress nicely all day ...I'm 35 weeks pregnant and every so often I just need a break 😆 it was my "chic" fi la experience watching your video 🙃
Loved this Jennifer - I enjoyed the entire video, but I definitely relate to the meal times, I've noticed that I revere mealtimes more than my peers, where we all sit at the table and share what I've cooked... and it curbs the snacking in all of us, and has given the kids better habits - we all know what time the meal is and we can wait for it.
What a great topic. 💕 I came out of a period of unwellness where my iron was extremely low and I was constantly weak, dizzy and lightheaded. And I found myself wearing a lot of sweatpants (more like decent joggers, but still) and being on the sofa a lot. I really disliked feeling so schlumpy but wasnt sure how to dress better with the way I was feeling and the very cold weather. Eventually upon feeling better, I went back to dressing better, and the nicer weather sure helped as well. This experience had made me interested in figuring out what to wear during times of sickness and malaise, where one feels almost powerless to make efforts but still desires to be put together.
For the days I was primarily in my recliner all day, I purchased a nice, soft pair of pants with an elastic waist that made me look more dressy than I was; I used my usual comfortable tops and have been able to look good even when not feeling well. My husband has never cared for sweat pants, so I have none. The pants I wear now do not look like loungewear, but they feel like it! I find that if I wear light makeup, especially groom my eyebrows, I feel much better without much fuss. I hope you feel better soon.
A few years ago i had finished work and had a long drive home and was really hungry. I was at the traffic lights digging around in my bag for something to eat and looked in the rear vision mirror to see a rather large woman literally stuffing food into her face. I thought "thats what ill look like if i keep this up." I remember this often and try to avoid eating on the way home. I do have my days though where i eat in the car, but they are few thanks to that woman.

This is a great video and it really resonates with me. I was a caregiver for my late husband for a number of years, and then after he passed away I didn’t really change much. I didn’t change my habits. Even though I moved to a different state I am worked for a while, I felt like I was in the same rut mentally. For a very long time now, I have felt an inner stirring to try to go back to being my authentic self. It doesn’t matter that I live alone and it doesn’t matter that I don’t have friends over every day. I just want to feel good about myself again. I think my husband would want me to and I know that I want to. Thank you for the inspiration.

Some really good points. I think I can use these even in my casual life. Structure would help me tremendously. I have been a long term subscriber and love ur content. I just wanted to say that I was raised by a "formal" mother and it made me a nervous wreck. Even to this day. So in quiet rebellion I went the opposite way. Not wanting any formal at all in my life. I'm still trying to find a middle ground.
I watch this video often just to laugh at you eating over the sink. It makes me smile and reminds me of how I once did that before IF, which has changed my life. Thank you, Jennifer for your good common sense and lovely humor.

I recommend you read 'Taste' by Stanley Tucci, a beautiful book by the American actor of Italian heritage and the importance of food, mealtimes and recipes to him, his parents, his children and colleagues. I was getting sleepy on a long drive yesterday, so I stopped and bought a two-serving bag of potato chips. I was thinking , to myself--this isn't like Jennifer at all. Most of the time, I do try to follow Madame Chic principles.
I'm making a commitment to get back into my more formal clothes. Currently I can't fit anything but my yoga pants!!!!! I find it makes me feel worse when I wear them tho!!! Here's to living intentionally from now on! Love your videos. Gonna get your books too.

I'm really having to work on my time management especially around balancing home management, exercise and diet. I think these tips will be so helpful for putting me in the right mindset. I totally agree about boredom. I had a period in the past when I put on weight because it was a really boring period at work. Just this morning, before watching your video, I thought that a good planned day and a good routine could give me a sense of accomplishment and help me to overcome boredom. Also if I'm not a fan of routines!

I have so enjoyed your videos! You inspired me to do intermittent fasting and I have for three months now. I haven’t lost a pound, but I’m grateful for the health benefits I’ve read about. I’ve researched what I could be doing wrong and couldn’t come up with anything, so I guess I’m just eating too much. I started with 16/8 and have progressed to 18/6. Congratulations on your commitment AND weight loss!
I served my house guest tea in a beautiful cup and saucer with spoon, napkin and a small plate for the used tea bag. Also a small plate with some cookies. This is what I do for myself. On day two she reprimanded me for such waste of plates and utensils and explained that she simply brewed her tea over the waste container and discarded the tea bag directly into the trash, then took her mug with her without the extra fancy dishes. Well Jennifer, this person is extremely unhealthy and unhappy. I much prefer creating a moment to enjoy. Thank you for always encouraging me.
I am still breastfeeding and the less the kids sleep the more I crave unhealthy foods in the evenings. I have been inspired by you Jennifer and have lately implemented a rule for myself: No food between dinner and breakfast. I am very happy with this new change, but honestly in the first 2 weeks, I thought about food about 10-15 times an evening. It is so meaningful to adapt these 'more formal' ways of carrying ourselves, because we become aware of where we are and where we want to be. On the yoga pants front: Since I put on yoga pants AFTER bringing the kids to bed I have started doing yoga (and other exercise) again in the evenings - yeah!

You have such as gift for recognizing such a powerful correlation between living a more formal life and weight control. I had never made this connection before but I completely agree. I have always leaned towards a more formal way of living in decorating my home and the way I dress. I have lived with a very pared down wardrobe for the past 5 years but today I plan to order your 10 item wardrobe E-course to make better selections. Also, my plan is to begin meal planning for the upcoming week and to sit at the table to enjoy it. When the pandemic hit and we went into lockdown, I was shocked at how many were viewing it as a time to have a months-long pajama party, with unending snacks and Netflix binges.
Instead I vowed to dress up everyday like I had somewhere to go. Hair, makeup, something cute to wear. It made a huge difference in my mood.
We used the time to get lots done around the house, found a farm box delivery service and ate healthier than ever. While it was a terribly scary time, we weren’t going to let it take our dignity.
During the pandemic I still wore lipstick under my 😷 mask, it’s just part of my routine every day mascara and 💄 lipstick
I did the same thing but I was so stressed I drank every day. I ended up putting on weight.
My mom had a dress that she bought in the 70's ( in her late 20's)which she kept long after she stopped wearing it and she would try it on every year to make sure she hadn't put on weight. If it was a bit snug feeling, she knew she needed to cut back on the food a bit. I must remember to ask her if she still has it.....
True or not I remember reading French women used fitted pants or skirt rather than a tape to 'measure' themselves.
I am a teacher in Vancouver, and lately I have been made aware of children that eat in their bedroom in front of a screen, or bouncing around the living room. I grew up in a poor immigrant family and yet we always sat down for our meals, no matter how humble. I can not believe the breakdown of not only set mealtimes at a common area, but the slow degradation of family values.
Because sadly there’s not much family formation anymore

I am 40 and live with my elderly mother. It is just the two of us usually but there's no question that the table is set and we sit down for meals, does not matter how simple or frugal it is. Even when I lived on my own I tried to avoid eating on the sofa or bed, I feel that such behavior will lead to be less mindful and organized in other aspects of my life too.

Since the 1960s we have been seeing this deliberately destructive social engineering creeping in and now it is accelerating. I just turned 68 and I just found this channel. I find it fascinating. This video was a true eye-opener. When I was first retired I had a bit more of a routine. Then I got sassy and said to myself, “I could do what I want when I want how I want and no one can boss me“. This was very liberating. However, over the years I have become a bit too relaxed and casual. On the days when my husband works, which is only two days a week now out of the house, I find myself lounging on my couch or sitting on my couch with my meal. Or eating lunch or snacking over The counter in the kitchen while I am multitasking. So I go from one extreme to the other. I’m either multitasking and eating at the same time which is not a good way to do it. Or I am a complete lounge lizard sitting on the couch eating. This video just made me chuckle because I could identify with many of the things said here! Picked up quite a few good tips too! And I’m surprised I let myself slip into these bad habits because while I was never super formal, as a very organized person I used to be a bit more intentional. And one of my pet peeves is the way people dress when they travel, particularly on an airplane. Sweat pants, pajamas, dirty feet in flip-flops, bed hair making them look like They just rolled out of bed and hopped on the plane. Lol I’m sorry I know I’m sounding Judgey but this and a few other things are really pet peeves of mine. This video was a good reminder that I can do better!
Great video. When I became a mother it dawned at me that if meals were only had at the dining table - not on the coach, not in bed - it helped keep my house cleaner! I never connected it with maintaining my weight, but, yeah.
I really enjoyed how you showed the drastic difference of the look in wearing sweats versus dressing in actual day clothes. A major difference!

Jennifer, it’s hard to imagine you EVER looking that way around your home, and mindlessly eating on the couch or over the sink, which is why I found it so funny! 😂
At 5ft 3/4in and 160#+, I knew I needed to loose weight. In my mind, at 53 years old and having lost 40 pounds two times in the last 20 years, this was going to be probably the last time I could lose the weight. I got a jump start to losing weight by having pneumonia for the first time for a full month in January this year and got down to 150 pounds. I decided to make that a guage and to never go above that weight. I also made my husband shake on it with me that he had permission to get firm with me if needed, if I went above that mark of 150 pounds. I had tried 8 hour window Intermittent fasting before and found I would not gain weight if I did it. I used that time to eat whenever and whatever I wanted. I however never lost any weight. I hated counting calories, making special meals and exercising, plus I did not have the energy to do so. Then I saw YOUR VIDEO...your 1 year update. WHAT!? I really don't have to count calories or exercise!!! This is great! Plus I get to have a mid day snack...I'm in! I am now at 139 pounds and that is my new guage...no going out of the 30's. Having three sensibly sized meals and one snack in an 8 hour period has been so helpful. Before I would skip meals to lose a pound only to be hungry all the time. In YOUR VIDEO, you ate well at each meal. It is amazing to eat so well and the weight come off! I now have energy and walk 3 miles a couple times a week. If anyone asks, I tell them about you and your way of eating. Your transparency and not making weight loss a program or huge ordeal has helped me to relax and actually lose weight. Going to continue this LIFESTYLE! Maybe I will have a good one year update too! May the LORD bless your household!
This is 100% true on the clothing front. Not wearing sweats and yoga pants with waistline hiding silhouettes is a great indicator of where my waist is going...I sew most of my" formal" clothes so I know exactly where I'm supposed to be.
That's so true! I doubt most of us non-seamstresses know our waist and hip measurements.

It seemed that only stretchy knit items were comfortable, but I even had to pull down my t shirts constantly because the space between my bust and shoulders is smaller that average (whatever that is). . I'm petite but muscular and absolutely nothing fit right. I now make even my t-shirts and lingerie. When I stand up, there's no digging anything out or adjusting anything. Much more ladylike in my opinion. It just seems very tacky to be digging to pull out my underthings. I didn't want to do that anymore. I love that I stumbled onto this channel. It seems so many influences are making life less formal and it shows. It's actual self care for me. It sets up long term good habits. Thank you!

In regard to our daywear, the same applies when we are sick. Just to get into daywear and adding a little cosmetics can raise my mood and energy level.

We have a very casual lifestyle but have always had our meals together at the table. Even when our son was in sports, we waited to eat until he got home from practice. We didn't do it to be formal, but we thought having a family meal together gave us the chance to talk about our day and keep up with what we were each doing.
This resonated with me so much! I broke my wrist in two places a couple of years ago, and I had to wear a cast for months. I couldn't wear pants that buttoned, so I lived in stretchy pants and tent like dresses. When I finally healed, I'd gained 15 pounds and I couldn't get into any of my clothes. I'm over 40 now and it was difficult to get that weight off. It's taken a year, but I'm 20 pounds down and much happier.

Too much of society doesn't care, and were surrounded by casual living so much we don't realize how much we let ourselves go.
I love how you couldn't even bring yourself to eat over the sink (while trying to display "goblin mode"). We have a guest house and I am SHOCKED at how so few of our guests use the dining table. I would say 95% of our guests either eat while sitting on the sofa or in bed. I really don't even understand why they would do that!?!?!??!

Jennifer! This is so profound and such an anchor! I think the thing that I miss and am longing for is structure. And the wisdom that you are sharing is priceless because it highlights the fact that as a culture we have become way too casual with our dress, with our homes, with our conversation, on and on. I think your video today is profoundly at the heart of why we have lost quality in life. And it is a bullseye for any of us who struggle with our weight. You mentioned boredom as well and I believe this is a key factor - the lack of structure. What is so needed is for people to have a sense of purpose and I believe this meets that need. Excellent points! Another 'problem' with eating inappropriately is the design of our homes. When it is all one big room -"open concept" then the food in the kitchen is always visually presented available. I notice that you have a separate kitchen and dining room, I think. I also think that is a good idea!
Here’s an interesting thought, Jennifer, that maybe you or others might agree with me on. Going along with living a formal life, looking presentable each day, setting the table, taking time out each day for a sit-down coffee/tea break, etc… is the concept of physically slowing down with doing tasks around the house. I got to thinking about this after going to the library and shopping downtown at a local, quaint gift shop. I noticed how the ladies I interacted with moved slowly and deliberately. Although these women were “older” in the sense that they were born before 1960, they were not slow because of old age, but they were slow because they were deliberate about each thing they were doing (counting the money, looking for something behind the cashier drawer, folding a receipt to put in my bag) It got me thinking about how quickly I move and do things around the house. I have 5 kids and I homeschool- while I do take time to do a lot of what you promote in these videos, I notice that I’m always moving in a rushed manner and when I slow down physically to take the time to do something like as if I’m NOT in a hurry, it really does something to the brain and mood. Does anyone know what I’m trying to describe or is it just me? 😂
I fully agree. I have noticed the same with me. When I am hurried towards finishing any chore I feel so much stressed from inside. I yell at my daughter for any xyz reason but when I set my intention to remain calm and composed I am able to finish my task with much ease and grace
I took a spill a couple of years ago after being in too much of a hurry while simultaneously allowing myself to become too fatigued that day. It scared me, because although I was not hurt in the fall, it easily could have gone another way. It made me think about Queen Elizabeth, and I wondered if anytime during her long reign, with so many public events, had she ever fallen? Well, I could not find a single recorded instance of her tripping, much less falling. That's when it dawned on me that she moves slowly and deliberately, and that's a good lesson for me. (Of course, in her life, everything revolves around her, so she's never in a hurry! That's not true in my life, but it's still an important lesson!)

I know exactly what you mean, especially as I do age more. I am so tired of being hustled through checkouts by fast-talking young women who are ok with the how are you today have a nice day thank you stuff but it is gabbled mechanically and the next persons things are being checked through when I am still checking and putting away my change and gathering my personal items before leaving. The words tumble out if their mouths, the ridiculous perspex screens now everywhere and the totally medically useless and harmful masks don't help either. I so hate going out shopping or even going somewhere for tea or coffee now. Life has lost its grace and care and for the most part been replaced with automaton empty words and platitudes.
@@taniacummings9207 Very well put! I agree. I think that’s why I prefer to be helped by the older ladies at the library or my favorite local bookstore and gift shops downtown where they actually take their time. (And wouldn’t you know, they’re all run by people in their 50’s or older)
(Melanie here) Fun and insightful video. And if you have an organized, structured life most of the time, there is room for spontaneous fun, too, because you know you will reign it in at some point. Especially with kids, when there is order (not constant mess and chaos), they can appreciate the occasional picnic lunch on a blanket on the floor since it's special. Hey, that's a video idea! How/when to be spontaneous within a formal lifestyle :)
Good insight. The "you do you" phenomenon is not helping anyone. There are better and worse choices, and it doesn't all boil down to you and your feelings.
As a lady of 65, I was raised in a more formal environment you speak of. It wasnt a wealthy home by world standards but yet this way of living was possible then and continues for people in every group of life. It continues for me to this day and is one that brings me a restful, welcome, beautiful environment and mind.
I've always said, it takes no more energy to pull on a baggy pair of joggers than a pair of nice trousers or skirt but the difference within is immeasurable.

This reminds me of my mother. She was very formal and I think of her a lot when I watch your channel. She wasn’t fancy but she was very conservative and we had dinner every night when my father came home.
This is great, definitely what I aspire to! As a mother who breastfeeds round the clock I do allow myself to snack whenever I am hungry, though. Once I am nursing less I'll need to be careful not to continue that habit, so these tips are very helpful.
Pip, nursing moms are excused! You have to do what you can, when you can. However, as your kids get older I strongly suggest a routine for everyday life..my mother did this, I did this and I hope my kids do this when they have kids!
Breastfeeding and early postpartum mamas absolutely get a pass!
Congratulations. I’m nursing a five month old who I feed applesauce and oatmeal to on days she seems to need it. I don’t know how old your baby is but at this stage I feel I’m able to get a lot done around the house and I’m eating a bit better as well. Having a three item to do list or a cleaning list helps with time management. Every nap is utilized to get things done. I also have two older Children ages 7 & 5 and babysit three others aged 12, 6 & 4. I love this channel because it reminds us to live beautifully and enjoy the things we buy not hoard them away as if they are too good for us to use. Anyways best of luck to you.
I love sweets! After reading your first book I decided to be more deliberate about sitting down at the table to enjoy dessert following my meal. Before, every time I passed by I would take a sliver of cake or slice of pie and before I knew it I'd eaten half by myself! Now my clothes are fitting better without even trying.
Setting a beautiful table is a way of saying “You are important enough.” Not just setting the table for occasions or when company is coming over. Set a beautiful table for one. Also if you are having a really bad day, dressing up in your cutest outfit will almost instantly raise your spirits. On a really bad day (like today) I like to go to a tea room and have afternoon tea. The whole process gives me something else to concentrate on and surrounds me with beauty and grace.

I put on a skirt and a freshly ironed T-shirt to go to the grocery store this morning and felt amazing! I didn’t even change when I got home either! Then I sat on my porch and ate lunch with my husband ☺️

Great video! I'm watching it waiting for my flight to take off at the airport. Goblin mode overload! When I grew up, we got dressed up to GO to the airport. I remember excitedly picking out my 'airport outfit'. It set the tone for the trip, in my opinion. Now, most people look like they are in pajamas. Makes me sad...
Exceptional segment. Very thought provoking. My mother is Canadian French and I was raised to live formally. Mom always wore a dress and added an apron when cooking or cleaning. She is now 93 years old and still runs her household impeccably. Cloth napkins at every meal and teatime.

This was a very inspiring video. With the advent of summer, we rarely adhere to meal schedules, or even cooking meals from scratch. Thanks to you I have added many revisions to my life and everything is organised and working to plan. Today was long, I baked all morning and kept the house clean and I couldn't get ahold of my husband today since he was handling business things. So I decided to take my boys to chic fi la. So yes I was def sitting in my car both boys asleep in the backseat doing the opposite of chic...eating my food while watching this video...but It was in peace as they slept and I just sat parked under a beautiful flower tree. I did dress nicely all day ...I'm 35 weeks pregnant and every so often I just need a break 😆 it was my "chic" fi la experience watching your video 🙃
Loved this Jennifer - I enjoyed the entire video, but I definitely relate to the meal times, I've noticed that I revere mealtimes more than my peers, where we all sit at the table and share what I've cooked... and it curbs the snacking in all of us, and has given the kids better habits - we all know what time the meal is and we can wait for it.

I came out of a period of unwellness where my iron was extremely low and I was constantly weak, dizzy and lightheaded.
And I found myself wearing a lot of sweatpants (more like decent joggers, but still) and being on the sofa a lot.
I really disliked feeling so schlumpy but wasnt sure how to dress better with the way I was feeling and the very cold weather.
Eventually upon feeling better, I went back to dressing better, and the nicer weather sure helped as well.
This experience had made me interested in figuring out what to wear during times of sickness and malaise, where one feels almost powerless to make efforts but still desires to be put together.

For the days I was primarily in my recliner all day, I purchased a nice, soft pair of pants with an elastic waist that made me look more dressy than I was; I used my usual comfortable tops and have been able to look good even when not feeling well. My husband has never cared for sweat pants, so I have none. The pants I wear now do not look like loungewear, but they feel like it! I find that if I wear light makeup, especially groom my eyebrows, I feel much better without much fuss. I hope you feel better soon.

A few years ago i had finished work and had a long drive home and was really hungry. I was at the traffic lights digging around in my bag for something to eat and looked in the rear vision mirror to see a rather large woman literally stuffing food into her face. I thought "thats what ill look like if i keep this up." I remember this often and try to avoid eating on the way home. I do have my days though where i eat in the car, but they are few thanks to that woman.

This is a great video and it really resonates with me. I was a caregiver for my late husband for a number of years, and then after he passed away I didn’t really change much. I didn’t change my habits. Even though I moved to a different state I am worked for a while, I felt like I was in the same rut mentally.
For a very long time now, I have felt an inner stirring to try to go back to being my authentic self. It doesn’t matter that I live alone and it doesn’t matter that I don’t have friends over every day. I just want to feel good about myself again. I think my husband would want me to and I know that I want to. Thank you for the inspiration.

Some really good points. I think I can use these even in my casual life. Structure would help me tremendously. I have been a long term subscriber and love ur content. I just wanted to say that I was raised by a "formal" mother and it made me a nervous wreck. Even to this day. So in quiet rebellion I went the opposite way. Not wanting any formal at all in my life. I'm still trying to find a middle ground.

I totally agree about boredom. I had a period in the past when I put on weight because it was a really boring period at work. Just this morning, before watching your video, I thought that a good planned day and a good routine could give me a sense of accomplishment and help me to overcome boredom. I have so enjoyed your videos! You inspired me to do intermittent fasting and I have for three months now. I haven’t lost a pound, but I’m grateful for the health benefits I’ve read about. I’ve researched what I could be doing wrong and couldn’t come up with anything, so I guess I’m just eating too much. I started with 16/8 and have progressed to 18/6. Congratulations on your commitment AND weight loss!
I served my house guest tea in a beautiful cup and saucer with spoon, napkin and a small plate for the used tea bag. Also a small plate with some cookies. This is what I do for myself. On day two she reprimanded me for such waste of plates and utensils and explained that she simply brewed her tea over the waste container and discarded the tea bag directly into the trash, then took her mug with her without the extra fancy dishes. Well Jennifer, this person is extremely unhealthy and unhappy. I much prefer creating a moment to enjoy. Thank you for always encouraging me.
I am still breastfeeding and the less the kids sleep the more I crave unhealthy foods in the evenings. I have been inspired by you Jennifer and have lately implemented a rule for myself: No food between dinner and breakfast. I am very happy with this new change, but honestly in the first 2 weeks, I thought about food about 10-15 times an evening. It is so meaningful to adapt these 'more formal' ways of carrying ourselves, because we become aware of where we are and where we want to be.
On the yoga pants front: Since I put on yoga pants AFTER bringing the kids to bed I have started doing yoga (and other exercise) again in the evenings - yeah!

You have such as gift for recognizing such a powerful correlation between living a more formal life and weight control. I had never made this connection before but I completely agree. I have always leaned towards a more formal way of living in decorating my home and the way I dress. I have lived with a very pared down wardrobe for the past 5 years but today I plan to order your 10 item wardrobe E-course to make better selections. Also, my plan is to begin meal planning for the upcoming week and to sit at the table to enjoy it. Thank you Jennifer so much for the valuable content you present and the inspiration that comes with it! I'm proud to say you are my role model.
