  • Today I'm chatting about what I learned after getting rid of over 60% of my clothes. I used to rely on collecting clothing and constantly shopped to stay "on trend", but realized that most of those trends weren't really for me at all. Nowadays I'm embracing a "less is more" philosophy when it comes to my wardrobe, and I've started to really figure out what my style is and what I no longer need to buy for my closet.
What are some pieces of clothing you no longer buy?

Once I started decluttering, I realized that many of us weren’t taught HOW to build a wardrobe for long term. I mean I get why, since our wardrobes for the first 12-18 yrs of our lives are disposable since we grow out of what we wear, but the underlying themes of basics and staples (for me) were completely missing. I think that’s why I always bought from a place of scarcity. If I had built a closet filled with high quality basics first, and figured out what my staples were, I don’t feel like I would’ve purchased as much. When you don’t have lots of pieces that actually pair well together, then it certainly does feel like you have gaps, probably because you do. But that would be easily fixed by building a solid foundation of basics and staples first.

Mandy, I think that is sooo true! And I want to add: I wish we would have been taught a lot of useful things like how to read a contract, how to apply for a job, what insurances to get or how to invest. Or just how to plug eyebrows. 😅🙈
I want to write a book: „What you need to know when you grow up“. Then I will include all the useful information you will need as a young adult. 🤩

Absolutely! But even knowing that you need to build a wardrobe on a foundation of staple pieces, it still takes time to learn which staples suit your lifestyle, colors and fits that suit your body shape and coloring, not to mention your own personal aesthetic. It's a journey!

Alot of the need for De-Cluttering is that we haven't been taught to Plan Ahead & Chose Wisely about ANYTHING! Seeing something someone else has & think "I should have that, too"! Then it doesn't fit OUR Life Style! Bummer! "I spent all that money on this but I don't Use it, Enjoy It, or Love it! 😟 So Now What??

When it comes to basics I like to have duplicates that are exactly the same. I live in black skinny jeans outside and black mid rise leggings inside. Therefore I bought two of the same kind before the company decides to discontinue my favorite. Same thing with bras: If I tested one and like it, I will buy a duplicate. Many times I thought that I will buy a new item when the "old" one is falling apart, but then it is no longer available and the brand only has a version with a different fit, cut or material that I don't like as much.

That’s the story of my life everything I love Has been discontinued…. lipsticks, perfumes, clothing, hair products. unbelievable I felt really targeted for a while. I did that with nude bras I found at a big name supermarket/grocery store for £4, because as a black person that's like finding a unicorn at that price. 4 years later can't find those bras in store.
I need to do the same with clothes, but I'm weird in the sense that I like my wardrobe to feel like a museum so I think I want only one so it's "special", I should probably look into which ones it makes sense to duplicate. Re-shopping is very tedious.

I’ve learned: 1) I don’t like button-ups on me, 2) I don’t like shirts with collars, and 3) I very much reach for oversized tops and fitted bottoms and never looser bottoms and more fitted tops.
YES to a part 2. Also another collaboration with Alyssa Beltempo!

Needless DEBT, piles of clothes everywhere (many unworn, with tags) and guilt/regret. I remembered a message in one if your recent videos...I wasn't ready to hear it then...but I AM now. Guilt, shame, debt...I am so ready to learn from you!!!! Thank you in advance for the being the beacon through the fog. I didn't learn too much about myself through decluttering my wardrobe, at first. But when I started decluttering my books? Wow. That was revealing. So many of my books were there to impress others. My keep-it-or-lose-it decision was based around a two-tier question: a) will I re-read it? If yes, will I be just as happy with it as an ebook? If yes, get the ebook and declutter the hard copy. If no, why not? b) If I'm not sure if I would re-read a book, am I inclined to keep it because it's meaningful to me / sparks joy just knowing that it's there on my shelf? Or, more often that I was happy to admit, am I keeping this book for bragging rights? What's so crazy about all this, is that my book case is in my bedroom, so very few people ever saw my books. But so many were there to show that I was "well read", had "intelligent" books, they were there to prove that I was "cultured" and "smart" = sophisticated. Which begged the question: just who is it I'm trying to impress? I eventually ended up going through a similar journey with my clothes. Decluttering was far more difficult and cathartic than I'd been prepared for. But what a relief to understand myself better and so gift myself the opportunity to grow. Thank you for talking so opening about your own experience! I don't have anyone IRL walking this path.

Thankyou . I buy duplicates of things I like - I have 3 Bardot tops in different colours. Like you I have and wear alot of "work" clothes. I do dress up to go shopping, eat out , go out for the day, on holiday - so alot of my wardrobe is only worn occasionally and I definitely have favourites. I do wrestle with my inner " Golem" , my crazy alter ego that loves to shop, loves fashion, loves to say "f*CK it buy it" , so I try to pause and reflect if I need or have genuine use for an item. But I also have to not constrain myself too much otherwise my Golem can rebel badly to rules- so it's a delicate balance. Watching your videos helps me with that balance. X

awesome video, thank you especially about this "enough" thing!
That's something I've been struggling with a long time. While creating a shopping list, I always had in mind, like OMG, I still need so many stuff to have a complete wardrobe. Thanks again for speaking about this in a different perspective!

This video was very helpful. I def went from clothing extreme to minimalist extreme trying to fix something and control peoples perception of me. It all boiled down to needed to accept myself for who i am and focus on what i actually like and use and not my fantasy self. Love your content!

Thank you for this. I love that your lessons have moved you to be kind to yourself and so many wise conclusions that will ever be growing over time. So relate with your perspective on scarcity mentality. It makes you hold on to things or acquire things because of the perception of lack or not having and not being enough. When you the have abundance mindset, you realize there is no lack. And yet one of the best new perspectives I got was from an author who wrote a book “I’m not enough and that’s ok” which I find much more freeing because our needs always change and we will always have some kind of need as we continue to grow over time. Really appreciate this content Christina! Your transparency and vulnerability and willingness to share your story for the benefit of all of us, too!

So happy to have found you! Currently in the 2nd season of decluttering and that internal conversation of each piece of clothing always involves guilt! No more of it! Always wanting to save it for a special occasion or when I lose weight or it's perfectly usable I shouldn't discard it or else I'll have to replace it $$$. Love your style and the confidence it exudes! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Looking forward to the next vid!

Thank you for sharing your journey ❤ And the genuine vulnerability of your/the process. I carry guilt in pieces because of when I bought them, why I bought them, and/or who bought/gifted them to me. Slowly working on it. I too found that my style has become more clear as I live doing my passions and not being afraid to express myself genuinely though clothing. So again, thank you thank you thank you 🤍

I “discovered” your channel not too long ago and I really like it. Thank you for your input regarding living an intentional life. Some years ago I used to buy clothes because they made me feel good. Then I had financial challenges and I stopped. Later what I wore and it’s quality were no linger important to me; and although I didn’t buy a lot, I notice now, that I didn’t put to much intention to it. Things are different now and I am older and looking for my style and I love it. My wardrobe is intentional now! Finding my style has made a difference in my selections.

This video really refocused me on my needs rather than wants. I’ve noticed that I’ve strayed from the path of building my basics. I have acquired most of them, but still looking for a few. I’m trying to only buy what I need and using a few fashion bloggers/vloggers for ideas. I noticed I saved clothes they featured to my wishlist. But after watching this I deleted a bunch of things bc I don’t need them. ❤️ thanks! And yes to part 2!!!

Great video! All of these points really resonated with me, but my favorite was to not focus on a specific number of items. I love options, but I also don't like feeling overwhelmed with too many choices.

  • @janicevin4207

I have decluttered my closet and now I do it only at the beginning of fall/winter and spring/summer. Then I decide If I am REALLY missing something and keep a list. Then what I could add if I have a "coup de coeur" (like a summer dress as I rarely find dresses that I like). I definitely keep clothes for a while before getting rid of them: I don't want to have any regret anymore: this is especially true for classic pieces as sometimes it is just that I have worn them a lot and want a change but think I should have kept them when I look at photos of me and think: "I looked good and it would be perfect this season why did I let it go!!!"

I loved your point number 9. Fluidity is important for sure. And getting out of the number game. Yes. And I loved your point about our wardrobes being complete already and adding in new pieces from a place of creativity rather than scarcity. This is so freeing. Using our things not to communicate our worth and importance but as self expression. Such good points. Thank you!

I discovered your channel yesterday, and you have instantly become my favorite youtuber, ever. You're articulate and warm, and I just love the idea of "minimalist-ish" because that is EXACTLY where I'm at right now. Your comfort in your own skin and intention with your words and actions really comes through. Thank you for the inspiration, and for invalidating the "one size fits all" kind of minimalism that is so pervasive. Cheers!

I really needed to hear this. I’ve been trying to figure out how many pieces I actually need and in which combinations to have the perfect wardrobe. I love and live in jeans, so the thought of getting rid of any of them to get to a certain number was causing anxiety. Now I understand that ‘enough’ is different for everyone.
