There is a marked difference in how smooth your flying is in this video compared the previous ones! You're improving and the mini-gaming monitor looks like it is gonna save you so much pain and annoyance! Such a cool setup

having a back-up monitor is great for other people around you to watch, or for people who are particularly sensitive to VR-sickness.
starting to fly with a monitor (or in simulator) can really help with VR-sickness, my dad can't stand the goggles but loves whooping on the TV.
but there is nothing quite like doing a full throttle punch-up into the sunrise in the goggles, the goggles are really the only way to fly.

This vid got some good heat! Congrats. I enjoy the content and vibe of your vids plus it’s obvious you put in the work to make them interesting. New sub. I can’t fly acro outdoors on a monitor because I’m easily distracted but I dig the concept. Thanks for posting.

To backup settings, connect to the FC and in the CLI tab type DIFF ALL and then save to file. To restore, go back to the CLI and click load from file. This would have gotten you most of the way but there are a few settings to work through that have changed in 4.4+ and would be colored red when loaded from a file. Backup settings before making changes and even afterwards too so you can always roll back if you run into an issue.
Also for sunny days you can make a cheap monitor sun hood out of black foam board and adhesive backed velcro. Happy flying!!!

Nice design on the 3d-printed wheel monitor adaptor. I tend to wire the GPS to a 5 volt power to a pad that has 5 volt power when the FC is plugged into an USB. Can then use portable USB power bank, or plug into USB in your car as getting things set up, or near the field.

It also helps that the vtx isn't powered this way reducing interference and improving the sat lock.

GPS - wrap copper tape around your antenna, add a strap wire to connect it as per you antenna connection. Make sure the copper is covered/heat shrunk or fabric tape to isolate it & prevent shorts.
No my idea - saw it elsewhere on YT 👍

if you decide go with the monitor instead of the goggles, you'd probably do better with the walksnail standalone rx you can probably 3d print a mount that attaches to the back of the monitor

  • @fritzbrand

If you get an M10 based GPS, they are much better at picking up satellites, plus they have a memory. What I do when I get to a new session, is first just apply USB power to the FC via a powerbank. That way the GPS can start up, while the VTX stays powered off. Then once it has enough satellites locked, you can remove the USB power and power it up for real. Should be ready to go MUCH quicker with this method.
If you think about it, if you enable GPS rescue, failsafe to Return to Home mode (RTH) it can't take off before it has full lock, otherwise things can go seriously wrong if you flick the switch to enable RTH, before it has all the satellites it needs

You could always build a shade box around the screen with some black foam board (from Officeworks) or cardboard.

A trick with gps I learned… plug a USB battery pack into FC in the car and carry both to your launch area. Then unplug when you are ready to take off and your satellites will likely be fixed by that point.

You can lower the minimum amount of required satellites to 5, and the Home Point will be accurate and it will then display the H and how far you are from the Home spot.
If you dont have a M10 GPS, then definitely get that. Allow arming without fix, lets you arm the drone without having the proper amount of Satellites, but you will not have GPS Rescue..
It still takes about 1-2mins for the first battery pack of the day.
If you want to go even further look into how to do the GPS wire shielding and grounding the shield.. You will get 5-6 Sats and be ready to take off in 30 seconds..
Definitely lower your minimum Sats number needed for takeoff, i have never had a problem with it at 5 Sat's, which is the minimum for me on V4.4..
Im going to be updating it to BF V5.0 release version soon as well to see what else was done to the GPS & GPS Rescue..

An M10 might, but might also not, magically solve your locking time problems. If it's too close to the VTX and the latter is too noisy, it'll crap out just as much as the M8. And then the GPS antenna size also matters, irrespective of the GPS chip. And then stuff like cloud coverage on a given day matters a lot. And then, for this kind of flying, no real need for GPS.
There's a BetaFlight setting that lets you arm without/before having a lock.

You have the quad sitting on a metal drain cover, that's why you're not get enough GPS signals. You should never arm a GPS drone on or to close to metal.

If you haven't figured it out by now the setting preventing you from taking of until it gets its fix is in the failsafe tab. Im unure of what happens if you turn on gps rescue with out setting a home location. Its probaby not good though... i should turn that off.

The MSP connection is active arming error shows up whenever you are connected in betaflight so id say it would be the same for the speedybee app. Its so you don't accidentally arm it on the bench. The beeping is because of inactivity and kicks in after a certain amount of time. Not sure why it would not arm tho, also tips for getting a quicker gps fix, have the gps mounted as far as possible from the vtx antenna with nothing above it and also if you shield the gps wires by wrapping them with aluminium or copper tape it also helps. Cold starts on gps always take a while tho.

i have some suggestions.. buy an m10 gps which are much faster to lock on and before you reflash an fc i would export the config so it it much faster to reconfigure.. another suggestion is try the supa fpv preset for the 5" which is amazing, it made a huge difference on my quad.. also i would lock the crossfire and not have it at variable output..

That monitor and the Walksnail vrx.
    Hell yeah
Also make sure low power mode is off when armed. I have the V1 fatshark Walksnail goggles and just a hill wouldn't make it lose connection on 700mw.
Truerc stubbies on goggles and Lollipop 4+ on the quads.
When o fly with my buddies that have dji around buildings/office parks/bando's they will be on 1200 and I'm fine on 500 to 700mw doing the same range.going inside buildings? I don't know as we go one at a time mostly and don't really compare mw's etc if it just works at that spot for us personally.

Your gps needs to be pointing straight up. Its angled the wrong direction. It needs to be pointing straight up in flight, which is why you see them pointed downward almost akwardly. You can change the amount of satellites required to arm in the failafe tab. Thats why it wouldnt arm

On one hand poor video quality due to bad lighting, on the other at least you could see what's happening on the screen. I would worry about it on a sunny day, even from the car. Perhaps there are some filters for the screen? Anti polarization or something, so the sunlight isn't reflected.
Or you can go full renegade and add some blinders for the car.

I like the idea.. but 350 nits is not very bright for outside use. You want 1200+ at least.. I have a 700 nit monitor for video work and its impossible to see much of anything in sunlight. With a hood over 3 sides. You can find 7" 2000 nit monitors for video work and even those are not bright enough in some situations.. they work but you still cant see a lot of detail for high end video work without hood and looking closely at it. If you can find a shady spot, 350 may work but 700+ would be better for FPV stuff. I'd still wager for FPV racing it's not enough detail for good racing stats but for just flying around it may be. Also.. the monitor you link is no longer available.

You would do a CLI Dump or DIFF, before updating and then you can re-apply all those settings once you have it updated and setup enough..
