After replaying the Uncharted games, I find Naughty Dog games a little more difficult to go back to and play a second time. The first time I played them, I was pretty darn blown away. But a second playthrough is pretty different beast. I think this is because they are pretty damn slow games and have a lot of story/exposition/cutscenes. The first time you play, it's pretty exciting, but that's precisely why it's harder the next time. This goes for lots of different games, not just Uncharted. I'm sure if I went back to TLOU (which is my favorite game of all time) I might find the experience a lot less enjoyable, which is why I never go back to it (don't want to tarnish that feel good memory, ya know?). So, though this video may seem pretty critical (and it is - that's the point) I think some of it could be attributed to this feeling. Maybe not with my section on combat, but during my thoughts on the traversal and pacing. Just wanted to point that out for those who think that I now hate this game. I don't. I just think it doesn't play as well a second time through.
I played Uncharted a bit back when it was released and didn't enjoy it. I was still a teenager and loved high octane PC shooters and CS, so it wasn't really my style at the time. I got the remastered collection for PS4 in the begging of last year, having just played TLOU for the first time and then a second time right after. I had just finished the first Game as my country went in to lockdown and I was without work for a couple of months. So I continued playing through the remastered collection one after the other and got through them in only weeks. I got 4 and the spinoff and played through them both, then 4 again. I really agree with there being parts of the game you'll be rushing through to get to the good stuff, but for me that wasn't the gun fights. I loved sliding around Scotland, that part where you drive around with Sam and sully, figuring out the puzzles in Madagascar, The pirate islands before Libertaria and espescially Libertaria and the jungles. I found the gun fights satisfying, unlike especially 1 and 2, and they were great for pacing. But those slow moments. Like when your driving with Elena up to the mansions, when Sam and Nathan are going through the pirate trails, the climbing in the rain and that last part in the caverns. Those were the ones I was returning for. I really think that what you'll returning for will be different from person to person . In the end I think no matter what part your most into, they're all great.
I think naughty dog games are the closest thing to interactive movies. The story quality is often as good if not better than most movies and the gameplay is fun and smooth. Although they have yet to recreate the feeling of watching a classic movie that is enjoyed with every viewing. Video games, especially modern ones, take substantial mental effort to enter into and complete a story.

I grew up playing Uncharted, and Uncharted 4 released exactly a month before I graduated high school. It was a good time. It felt like as a chapter of my life was ending and my childhood was finally coming to a close, Nathan Drake’s adventure was simultaneously doing the same. Now, 5 years later, Uncharted is still my favorite game franchise of all time and Uncharted 4 is one of the most unforgettable games I’ve ever played.
Same, Uncharted and Assassin's creed (mostly until AC3 with desmond's end) will always be my favorite franchise games. This year i have played AC Ezio's Collection and i felt like i was a kid again. Time flies...
My favorite scene in the game is when Nate and Elena are at the table and Nate is recounting the history that must have been. "These are - some of history's greatest pirates. And they all perished - in an instant - at this, very table.." Nolan really did a fantastic job. His love and passion for history oozes from his voice in that moment.
I absolutely love the loon Elena is giving him in that moment. The actress and the animators did an amazing job in capturing that raw emotion of the moment.
@@notanytony So good. You could see on her face, that she could hear the obsession in his voice, his passion, and how she accepted it, "its incredible." and kind of embraced it with an acknowledging smile.
The ending is perfect if you don't count Nadine leaving all self-righteously when she has been fighting for her own gain the entire game and how Nathan doesn't knock down Rafe with a single punch. The speech Nathan gives to his brother about the meaning of life and a scene with the daughter where Nathan tells her not to cuss are hilarious and touching
Game of year is just a popularity award , people vote for their fav game , more so gamers , because if the casuals did they'd vote in fifa and cod every year . But in that year overwatch was huge.
@@yobro6053 Nah, the game awards have their own critics I'm pretty sure. That's why the player's choice awards exist. And the logic that casual gamers would vote fifa and cod doesn't make sense, because I don't think those franchises ever won a people's choice award. For example, this year's player's choice awards winner was Ghost of Tsushima, and anyone was allowed to vote.
Uncharted 4 is - The game with the most GOTY awards in 2016 (total of GOTYs) - The highest rated game in 2016 - Over 16 million copies sold A masterpiece by all metrics.
Oh so awards and sales figures dictate what is and isn't a masterpiece? I suppose every fucking film the Oscars have taken is a masterpiece, and Cyberpunk sold millions of copies, i suppose that game is a masterpiece too? Very flawed logic.
@@falcononpc9845 You want me to ignore all these groundbreaking achievements and listen to your opinion? Of course you don't count these metrics because Xbox is failing miserably in them. Nothing dictates what you like but you can't dismiss these numbers unless you're a hater.
I understand the criticisms but I’ve played through 3 times and I love the slow pace, I just love the way the environments are crafted and the character interactions. Also extra length is great for me since I think that’s an important part for the single player genre to develop. The greatest weakness for such games is that you can pay the same price for something like the Witcher which has over 100 hours of gameplay with just one play through
why are you comparing this masterpiece to the witcher 3 witcher 3 has awful graphics, gamplay,a fucking facial animation and too long useless conversation bet characters and also the story is too long and boring like baron quests it was long and boring you could know what is going to happen since start of the game like 100 precent you are going to find ciri and then fight the wild hunt

@@crit1kal_z Yeah man. I love UC1 and UC2, UC2 is the best game in the series. UC3 was okay but UC4 is boring, mediocre, overrated, forgetful story, bad characters and there's a SJW agenda.
15:42 I'm gonna have to disagree with you with you there. The way I see it, the game purposefully has 2 slow paced climbing sections at the beginning because they want us to get used to the new Nathan we're introduced to. An older, more relaxed Nathan who is living a slower paced life. The beginning is slower, but then picks up the pace intentionally, conceptualizing Nathan picking up the pace and getting back to the life he left behind. I do agree with you that the platforming probably could have been handled better, plus Nadine's character kind of sucked and was unnecessary.
And that same older Nate moves faster and hits harder than any before in combat lol. I connect more to him after the Madagascar chase or the train from Uncharted 2
I have to disagree with you. You play through the first climbing tutorial as kid Nate, then play through the second one as young Nate. Essentially, in the first 2-3 hours of the game the narrative jumps all over the place both in time and location, yet the gameplay stays the same, which really makes no sense thematically. That is just some shitty gameplay pacing from ND, which is the biggest issue with this game.
I replay Uncharted 4 every few years to see if it's still got a foothold as my personal favorite game of all time, and the only game that's come close to knocking it was RDR2. The action, score, and story of Uncharted 4 is what keeps it as my number 1
And to add to that i'd say Uncharted 3 has the most raw essence of the franchise since it features the best and most jaw dropping setpieces which is what the games are all about. Uncharted 1 on the other hand while still good feels pretty dated and pales in comparison to all three sequels and The Lost Legacy (i don't know how it stacks up to Golden Abyss i haven't played it).
Yeah, when Uncharted 2 came out it was fresh, the big set pieces made your jaw drop, the climbing with the breaking ledges had you on the edge of your seat. Two games later and Uncharted 4 was doing the same old stuff with a shiny coat of paint. It looked brand new and felt a decade old. Lots of reviews said so. Uncharted 2 is easily the most revered in the series.
4 is much better storywise, villain wise and even gameplay wise, they wanted to go for more of a last of us pacing which doesn’t exactly work since the game doesn’t have much to offer except to keep moving foward, while in last of us those downtime can be used to explore and upgrade your weapons
@@gillianstewart835 barely story-wise and absolutely not villain wise are you kidding me? He's a complete Punk and there's no way Nathan shouldn't knock his ass down with a single punch

Uncharted 4 has the best climbing to date of any game period. It sounds like most of your negative impressions are around the climbing early calling it boring. But those parts are some of the best parts of the game. running around climbing as kid drake is a total blast. Since it's the beginning of the game the polish of the climbing mechanics are still really fresh and can easily carry the fun factor of the game on it's own.
@@HighMisticFive Zeldas climbing is fun but it quite literally is just the same lame animation going up a mountain. It doesn't change at all. Uncharted you are constantly climbing in realistic feasible ways (minus the fact that it's still a game and being able to climb as many structures as drake does at the speed drake does would ultimately result in death) Your constantly looking for handholds in different locations and for totally unique objects throughout the entire game. Many of which require you to jump to or grab hold of in different ways Plus the number of different ways to jump to the same handhold keeps things interesting. The shear number of climbing animations in the game is staggering. The main difference you can argue that makes zelda better is the stamina factor but that is far more dependent on the type of game. uncharted is a linear story driven game. Zelda is a open world go anywhere type game. I think a better way of looking at it is imagine playing Zelda and having that stamina bar but also having the actual climbing mechanics of uncharted 4. All the physics based animations, multiple ways to jump to the same areas and, unique crevasses and holds (you can't just climb up any flat rock) Plus the physics based rope and knife. That would be a killer game because the climbing is so well polished. But now take that example and consider what parts were taken from which game. Basically everything but the stamina bar comes from uncharted. Hence yes the stamina bar adds a lot of fun factor but when it comes to climbing uncharted has it beat big time. The stamina bar is just a supplemental thing, it itself is not signifier of how well done the climbing is. Also by your logic if zelda was the gold standard than shadow of the colossus would actually be the winner because it's basically zeldas climbing system done better because you can climb all directions and it's physics based.
the first part where you climb as a kid nathan was fun. but in the game they give you so much repetitive climbing it gets boring. i LOVE LOVE climbing in games and finished all Tomb Raider franchise. but in this game you keep doing the same climbing over n over n over I was like when the F is this part gonna end. especially when you go through the caves with sam

I'm at the tail end of 3 on a marathon run of the whole series. I haven't played uncharted since 4 came out, besides some of the Vita spin off, and I find myself still absolutely loving it. I wish I could find more games that keep me as entertained as this series does.
UC4 was the first game I ever played on my first PlayStation back in 2020. As a former Xbox user, I was missing out on SO MANY masterpieces, it was impossible to go back to Xbox. UC4 turned out to be my favorite game of all time, and I quickly bought as many PS4-exclusive games as I could (including Horizon, The Last of Us, LBP3, Dreams, Ratchet and Clank, etc, UC:LL). Literally every game I played from Sony Interactive, Naughty Dog, and Media Molecule were masterpieces. I can't believe I have been missing out on an entire world for so long, it actually feels like my childhood was a waste. One year later I ended up getting my friend a PS4 Slim and first thing he played was Uncharted 4. Wise choice.
if you make a fun mechanic available all the time, the little moments that it does use will make it less impactful. just like if you eat cake all the time, having cake on your birthday will make no difference.
I disagree. I love Just Cause 3 and even though the game is repetitive playing around with a wingsuit is something unique to that game and it ever gets old to use

I've played Among Thieves probably more times than I remember. Played it as a child, played it as a teenager, played it as an adult. I've also played it 2 more times to achieve Platinum. Same goes for Drake's Fortune and Drake's Deception. All great games (especially Among Thieves, which has a unique place in my heart as the first true story-based game I ever played). They all were and are great games but, for me, what makes A Thief's End the best of them all, is what it achieved. Not what it achieved from a mechanics or a graphics point of view (which in of themselves are pretty remarkable for the PS4 and for 2016), but for what it achieved as an ending to such a beloved franchise. So many times studios invent beloved franchises yet they fail to understand how to end them, when to end them or they simply never want to and they choose to keep exploiting their name for profit (*cough*Assassin'sCreed*cough*). Other times, studios end their franchise at the correct time but the hype that the title has amassed builds a promise that they can't fulfill. So, for me, what Naughty Dog achieved with A Thief's End, what they proved, is that even if a game has massive anticipation around it, even if the franchise behind it has so many great titles, even if you deliver a story that most fans weren't exactly expecting, you still CAN make a game that the fans will love. You still can achieve your goals. It's easy for studios nowadays to cover their failures with the blanket called "too much hype" , "overbearing anticipation". Now we know you can succeed even with all that in mind. Naughty Dog's proved it. Great video man..
Idk about you guys but Nathan Drake was the fictional personality I looked upto in every aspect growing up as a kid. This final game was pure fun and had one of the satisfying cohesive endings to a series I've experienced till date. I'm glad I was 96 born.
I revisited this game last summer for the first time in a few years, it still was a great time as I had forgotten a lot of the best moments. For me, these games were always about the characters, and in that regard this game really delivered for me.
Agree with all except the pacing, I did loved the slow character interaction parts and less the over the top action. Man I'm so relieved that its not just me who thought the platforming is over tuned, boring and shallow. Played all the series in 2020 for the first time and they are a mixed bag for me: characters, their interactions and the scenery , world bilging is all awesome, than comes the absolute zero realism writing and the platforming and I want to throw out the ps4 in the window. Best for me was Lost legacy, which has proportionally less platforming, more funny character interactions between the two polar opposite personality of the protagonists, all was very good.
Im currenty on the Uncharted marathon and i've played only Among Thieves before. Im also getting all the Ps4/5 trophies. 3 Uncharted games down and started Uncharted 4 few days ago and what an amazing game it is.
By coincidence I've just finished it on the PS4 Pro. Played the previous games and had a good time. This was no exception. There are times when you are stuck, literally ànd because the game doesn't allow for multiple approaches it can be a bit frustrating. This doesn't help with the immersion either. Don't get me wrong it's a good game but by the end I was glad it was over.
I got my first videogame console the Xmas of 2011, a ps3. it came with the Uncharted 3, AND I FELL IN LOVE. Uncharted has been the videogame saga that has had the biggest impact in me. Well seeing this video in my suggested really made my day, Thanks Naughty Dog.
The graphic is awesome but you know what is awesome? two brother's relationship, their journey across the world, and even the criminal world have it owns charm in uncharted, Uncharted teach me that freedom is worth risking. After all, the idea of freedom itself sounds fun and makes you feel alive, especially when you discover something new along your journey. Uncharted 4 is not an open-world game but it gives me a sense of freedom that no game can compete.
As someone who just recently play the Nathan drake collection and uncharted 4 over the winter break wit no prior knowledge or bias I see uncharted franchise as a masterpiece for video games. It’s story is amazing but how the whole narrative is conveyed is what made me like it. Always felt like a fun action movie. The amazing cast of characters and antagonists were always there and never disappointed. I enjoyed the puzzle for the games in 1/2 but 3/4 I wasn’t feeling it. The parkour was amazing in every standard in my opinion. Uncharted 4 had my favorite gameplay it was very smooth and u can see how the time differences rly improved the game. Overall rating is 9/10 for the whole series. It rly does hold up in my opinion and def is a must play for anyone.
I don't think they should do that. Clearly, linear gameplay is what they excel at, so if they make something open world, it probably won't be that good.
My GF used to HATE video games, but when Uncharted 4 first came out she kept asking me questions about it when she'd catch a few good story moments during my play. She made me restart the game so she could follow the story and watch me play, eventually taking the controller to explore and climb only giving it back when there was a gun fight. She loved it! I then asked if she wanted to play TLOU Remastered and she enjoyed that too, then she proceeded to play the Uncharted Collection solo, then heavy rain, Detroit become human, until dawn, she even platted lego batman 3! Currently playing through beyond two souls and the dark pictures anthology. She tried COD and went 1-28 but I'm glad she enjoys the story type games, you just gotta find your style of gaming! :)
If I may be so bold as to request a video topic... The Lego Star Wars series of video games and how it has evolved while still having the same formula and how it isn't hated as much as many yearly release franchises like Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed...
Uncharted 4 is my favorite game of all time, the mechanics, the story, the characters, the puzzles, the atmosphere the soundtracks and even the graphics, though when I play it get sad vibes, don’t know why but maybe because it was Nate’s final adventure

21:29 noticed it to? Yeah I felt the same way with the first last of us since Niel (Pre Tlou2) had a stop and go and repeat type of story telling. The game would start with this action set piece before slowing down the pacing to drop exposition on you. The story was great but the pacing just felt off for me.
I think that's the point..? I really liked this moments the tension of action was down and the characters could expand a bit, it didn't always work like the opening to scottland in uncharted 4 is a tad to slow for me, but generally I think it's purposeful and pretty cool :P

You should have discussed the multiplayer as well. Extremely underrated and it's one of the best 3rd person shooter multiplayers out there and probably the best one on the PS4.
Precisely one year ago, I finally got the PS4 and played this game after having watched all the youtubers play this game years ago, I deemed it my favourite game before and that narrative stuck with me even after playing this game. Even though I knew what happened, I was complete immersed playing it first hand and yes I agree, the beginning parts are a bit tedious when replaying it and attempting to gain the trophies for platinum but in the end, once you achieve that platinum, it feels completely worth it. I guess the main criticism I have is the shipyard scene on crushing difficulty is RIDICULOUSLY difficult but other than, I often find myself nowadays replaying this game from time to time. Great video by the way, you expressed your points really well, I thoroughly enjoyed listening
When I played Uncharted 4, not long after launch, I felt something was really off and ended up not enjoying it at all. I loved Uncharted 2 and 3, but 4 was just not fun for me. Maybe the locations, maybe the story, maybe the characters, maybe all of them, but I didn't like the game. I replayed it 3-4 yearsater and again I didn't like it.
When I bought the PS3 for my kids, I bought a few games for them and Drake's Fortune for me. I bought all the rest in the series on day 1 even thought I was 51 when A Thief's End came out. The ending was perfect for me - I knew it was probably the last game I would ever play. I checked out everything I could in the house and on the beach. I grinned ear to ear when the credits began to roll because I appreciated the years of Uncharted experiences. You're right of course about its faults. But the sum of the parts were greater and more immersive than any other game or series I had ever played. So I lovingly forgave it and winced when my son took the PS4 when he left home.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you with you there.

I’d say Uncharted 2 is the most revered with 4 being a close second. The pacing on 2 is much better imo, though of course 4 is much better visually.

Best climbing to date of any game period? Zelda: BotW have a better climbing with more dinamism.
@@HighMisticFive Zeldas climbing is fun but it quite literally is just the same lame animation going up a mountain. It doesn't change at all.
Uncharted you are constantly climbing in realistic feasible ways (minus the fact that it's still a game and being able to climb as many structures as drake does at the speed drake does would ultimately result in death)
Your constantly looking for handholds in different locations and for totally unique objects throughout the entire game.

So, for me, what Naughty Dog achieved with A Thief's End, what they proved, is that even if a game has massive anticipation around it, even if the franchise behind it has so many great titles, even if you deliver a story that most fans weren't exactly expecting,
you still CAN make a game that the fans will love. You still can achieve your goals. It's easy for studios nowadays to cover their failures with the blanket called "too much hype" , "overbearing anticipation". Now we know you can succeed even with all that in mind.
Naughty Dog's proved it.

Idk about you guys but Nathan Drake was the fictional personality I looked upto in every aspect growing up as a kid. This final game was pure fun and had one of the satisfying cohesive endings to a series I've experienced till date. I'm glad I was 96 born.
I’ve always loved the lore of the pirate captains and am saddened by how the treasure made them all turn on each other.

@@hengeloserickkert3754 3rd had some really good action sequences at least
I've played the series when I was younger and loved it, I wanna replay it again now. I remember finishing the school year and finally getting 4. What a fun ass time
The Nadine 'fight' lmao
Oh, Neil Druckmann, you're one weird individual
@Alâ more like a political agenda than anything.
The 'super powerful black female'. And you can't even touch her apparently. Nathan can't land ONE hit on her. It's just ridiculous.
@@arkanjoteixeiraBut it didn't feel so forced as the political agenda in Tlou 2. Almost every character is forced
@@DiegoTequila thats true
@@arkanjoteixeira It was done for humour, I think. Nathan goes in all cocky and then gets beat the crap out of by this beast.

My god 5 years has passed already, I remembered it was my birthday when I got the PS4 and Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection and Uncharted 4 was coming the next month, time flies back quick.
I used to be a big fan of yours, but that overly statistical & objective analysis of the game feel incredibly disconnected. A game is so much more than mechanics..
Uncharted 4 was the first game I played on PS4. Came with it. It was an amazing introduction to newer consoles. Simple, yet extremely enjoyable
@@teacooper6485 I’m not saying it’s bad it just felt a bit off to me
@@shinigami9851 fair enough dude, I just wanted to show you my thoughts on it :)
Uncharted 4 is still one of the greatest games I've ever played. I get on it from time to time and the graphics, mechanics, etc are still top-notch and better than most games tbh.
Honestly, my favorite is definitely uncharted 2. I love it so much.
yeah I cannot play uncharted 4 without playing 2 first.... for some reason it just give 4 so much more meaning because of all the homages to the second game,
You should have discussed the multiplayer as well. Extremely underrated and it's one of the best 3rd person shooter multiplayers out there and probably the best one on the PS4.
Uncharted 4 was 5 years ago? WHAT!!!!!!!?
No the game will become 5 years old in May
Precisely one year ago, I finally got the PS4 and played this game after having watched all the youtubers play this game years ago, I deemed it my favourite game before and that narrative stuck with me even after playing this game.
4 is the worst one.
