  • On May 18, 2024, at the El Mirage Dry Lake Bed, Pete Aardema and Kevin Braun made history with their groundbreaking homemade V12 engine. The duo, renowned for their innovative engineering, crafted a naturally aspirated V12 engine that produces an astounding 920 horsepower. This mechanical marvel powered their custom-built streamlined race car driven by Cal Rothe to a phenomenal speed of 244.5 MPH, setting a new speed record at the iconic venue.
The record-breaking attempt was the culmination of years of meticulous design and engineering. Aardema and Braun's V12 engine, a testament to their skill and ingenuity, combines cutting-edge technology with traditional craftsmanship. Its naturally aspirated design showcases their dedication to achieving peak performance without forced induction, a feat that amplifies the engine's engineering excellence.
At El Mirage, the car's performance was nothing short of spectacular. The dry lake bed, known for its challenging conditions, provided the ultimate testing ground for the V12, 4 valve powerhouse. As the car roared down the track at 9500 RPM and spectators were awestruck by the sheer speed and power on display. The record-setting run was a flawless demonstration of precision, power, and relentless pursuit of speed.
Aardema and Braun's achievement not only set a new benchmark at El Mirage but also pushed the boundaries of what is possible in the world of automotive engineering. Their homemade V12 engine is a remarkable accomplishment, inspiring enthusiasts and engineers alike. This historic day at El Mirage will be remembered as a milestone in racing history, celebrating the spirit of innovation and the quest for speed.

10000 rpm v12 with a 1000hp and no forced induction out of a homemade engine is absolutely insane. People just don’t understand what it takes to do that. Unreal

In the 60s Burt Monroe took a 1927 twin cylinder Indian scout motorcycle to 202mph , I seriously doubt that he was making 50hp

That's only a few mph faster then this same years Indy 500 qualifying runs. Sounds like no big deal then,....
However,... Indy cars run on a well maintained surface with a lot more grip, they have about four times the contact patch on the ground, significantly more downforce, and around 1000 times the budget per car, in a car made from superlight space industry derived materials.
244mph, safely, from a couple of old fella's working in their shed, on a loose dirt surface and skinny tyres, is bloody astounding!

The thing with records out there are the class restrictions that sort out which record you’re running for. Records are often divided by CC displacement of the engine, naturally aspirated vs forced induction/NOS, streamlining, etc… so his record is for the specific guidelines of a specific record. His vehicle is streamlined and naturally aspirated, and is likely below a certain displacement limit.

    • @meltdown6165
      @meltdown6165 3 місяці тому

Yes I got that you would not run one big cylinder. I just don't think it is that straight forward to scale this up. E.g. you would probably need more cooling because you have less surface area on the block, so more parasitic losses on the water pump etc. But you are right, motorcycle engines are very power dense, I saw land speed cars build around them.

New subscriber here- cemented in, firmly, just because you fellow car-freaks used A POWER GLIDE trans !!!😁. That hooker looks like she could really be a handful. I have to explore your channel more to help feed the savage beast within. Every aspect of your audio was even excellent. I earnestly pray that someday I may be bequeathed with a blessing of that magnitude to so skillfully articulate that much kinetic potential where the majority of the greater risks lies within the mere abrasiveness of the surface I am driving on. The 1st car I began to further refine my driving skills in (at age 11) was a rather ambitious Cleveland-bearing ('68?) XR7 Cougar. She was my oldest sister's 1st car in '75 just about when Firestone left us high and dry in Akron. So the thing was notorious for overheating and my Pops threw the requisite parts at it to no avail which of course afforded me some seat time. No one in our circles could figure it out but looking back now as a 60 y/o I would think that someone had just gotten a little too crazy with a Dremel tool and gotten too close to a water passage in an exhaust port in the process. Goofy thing had a lopey idle our pea-stone gravel driveway was about three car lengths long; in my quest to feed my need for speed the second I punched that girl the secondaries would open directly up and something activated within me that was acutely sensitive to yaw and I just countersteered because our driveway was adjacent to our Ranch home that I didn't even want to wreck in to. Girlfriend would hit 6-7 grand, right now. I was not a huge Ford fan then but the sound of a Cleveland, with or without valve overlap is mighty easy on my ears, nowadays. Btw; the vid I saw of yours today where she so nearly ran 245 is a new all-time 1st.place favorite of mine and I AM IN ❤!!!!!!

    1) More down force at low speed acceleration / less down force for max speed, IE, F-1?
    2) How much side resistance with outside exhaust V larger long pipe inside frame = more push in the slip stream, IE, F-1?

I'm assuming you guys did that run at El Mirage. I used to go out there as a kid and into my 20s 1970s- 1980s and ride motorcycles and some friends had hot rods and 4wds.
One Labor Day weekend out there it was pretty cold and a little windy and made for a ruff day on the motorcycles so we sat around the fire and around sunset we noticed there was snow blowing around and gathering around the tires of our vehicles. The next morning we had about a half inch of snow on the ground and on the vehicles.
You never know what the temperature will be out in the desert. 100° or more during the day and in the low 30s at night is normal out there.
Great job breaking that record. Thanks for the viseo

A home made V12 369CI. Love the backyard innovations. What do F1/Indy throw at their cars? $100Million or so. Well done guys and gals. Drive safe, drive straight, drive into the record books.

Why is the idle so high ( 2,800 RPM )
Also, speaking to glitches in the electronics, put a scope on the alternator output terminal and see if there is lots of AC, I've had strange problems crop up if a diode goes bad. This would not cause coils to fail though. Are these coils designed to be peak and hold ? ( high inrush then voltage limiting to limit amps ) Perhaps dwell time is excessive at low RPM causing the coils to overheat.
