Just seen it, way too soon to comment about it. But there is one thing that struck me : this could be one of the best character development I’ve seen in movies. Subtle yet perceptible, from chaotic introvert to confident killer, yet always faithful to his fundamental characteristics.
This movie really does get some raw visceral feelings unlike most serial killer things that are heavily dramatized and unrealistic. A fantastic character development and absolutely Great pacing and story.
One thing I can say that I definitely appreciate about this film is that it actually paints a fearful picture of a serial killer. Many films and shows fetishize or glamorize brutality and murder. From a classic stabbing to cannibalism. Funny how so many people walked out of this film, yet I know for certain there's a seriously large amount of people who find them curious about what makes a murderer; what fuels their thrill to kill. Even so much to a point where they will read up on murder stories, secretly try to look up photos from cases, watch videos explaining details, etc. Yes the film is gross. Yes Von Trier is totally disturbed. But I'm being honest here, I appreciate his love for rawness and well--honesty.
Von Trier is just another serial killer fanboy. Instead of just reading up on murder stories or looking up photos from cases, as you say, he makes movies about them!
@The Ting LOL! Not sure why you thought I was scared of this film. I'm quite interested in the moral philosophy and psychology of psychopaths so this was my kind of film. It offered so much more than just the gratuitious depiction of violence that all simple minded serial killer fanboys get off on!
A masterpiece. How daring the way in which the movie shows us the exciting feeling that the character has to be satisfied by committing murders, reflecting to what extent the madness of a serial killer can come. He has sincerely left me speechless and I hope another movie is made the same. 5/5 stars
Romani 02 Totally agree with you! This movie was made out to be some disgusting, sick movie like The Human Centipede or A Serbian Film, but it was way more intelligent than that in my opinion. I can tell you I am American and thought it was one of the best films of 2018 also thought it was the most interesting as well humorous/bizarre portrayals of a serial killer
Dummies and very literal-minded people will not like the movie. These ninnyhammers are present all over the planet. But let's not forget that america's contribution to literary and visual arts has been unparallel in the past 100 years. In terms of directors, guys like lars and christopher nolan are the exceptions because they are top directors who are not american. And dont get me started on the gd american novel... Ps reading dante helps, reading dante in original italian is preferable. That said, a cursory look/summary exegesis over the dante's inferno will be sufficient for most. There are so many allusions in the film. Depends on how much work you want to invest. Surely a classic though.
@@Brandon-tk2rw There are people that can't stomach this much violence or that simply didn't like the movie, you don't need to be smart in anyway to like it
You sad jaded person then. The message of this film is simply to mock life, worsen the current polarisation of opinion and tick the box for egotists, who want to feel they’re intellectual and hardcore by finding ‘art’ in an intentionally nasty film with no imagination to it. It has some good ideas but only really labours its point and tries much too hard. Boring, moving on...
Rishabh First of all they would walk out just because they hate Von Trier. Secondly they are told what to write and their opinionated critiques are always crap and lies. Thirdly, the whole audience walked out during the first 5 minutes of Dogville in Tucson, they left during AntiChrist and also Nymphomania. Hell, the Left would would walk out today at a screening of The Idiots. Lars is not politically correct, never was and never will be, thank God. So people walking out mostly just means they don't understand his films or they are virtue signaling.
This looks very interesting and quite promising, as it always is when it comes to Mr. Von Trier's works. Also, it seems like Matt Dillon is finally getting the role he has long deserved. I'm really glad for him, it was about time! I've always thought he was hugely underrated and he never really got the chance to play a really 'dark' character like this one. I'm definitely looking forward to watch this.
@Space Alien are you kidding? It's not even good. The "controversy" lasted for like two days. It's just another washed off shit by a director who lost his touch somewhere in 2004 and is making pseudo intellectual wanna be edgy crap.
Koles . Well I enjoyed it . You really shouldn’t take this film so seriously . It’s a black comedy horror more than anything . I enjoyed it . Did not find it scary but a bit dark and very entertaining . Can see why there was some controversy but it has been blown out of proportion. It’s really not that bad . It’s a bit graphic in parts but nothing majorly over the top.
Das Kinophile ENTP I mean she got her head smashed in about 30 seconds into the trailer, I’m pretty sure she’s not going to be in the movie for that long
D Mosh According to the first reports, it's even more brutal than the trailer suggests as there were a huge number of walkouts during the Cannes premiere.
Frederick Core Agreed. The news about people being wheeled out of the complete "Nymph()maniac" premiere in Denmark after fainting was more newsworthy because no one, to the best of my knowledge, ever fainted watching a von Trier movie in the theater before.
i loved nymphomaniac vol 1 and 2. i would love to see this new movie but i don't know if i can stand sitting in with the audience right now. Id rather be home right now and sit in my bathrobe. I certainly wouldn't walk out though. The only movie i ever walked out of is Conjuring2, it was so utterly stupid. I don't like victim point of view films if the victims are walking staright towards danger.
Just watched it. Very unique, interesting and well acted. It felt like a completely new type of film. The murders are very intense and uncomfortable, which may turn a lot of people off. Some very memorable scenes, whether you want them to be or not. Reminded me of American Psycho but more dark and visceral.
Funny how most of the people who vocally are against this movie, are American, which also is the country to produce the highest amount of serial killers in the world, but yeah let's blame the guy shining a light on our society #Logic#ButHeyThatsNoneOfMyBusiness
No. The majority of people being "hyped up" about the movie are Americans. Because if the French hate it, it must be great. (Yeah, they don't realize that Cannes is the biggest film festival in the world and at the premiere there are critics from all over the world. Well, maybe for them the entire world outside of US is French. In any case, conservatives are now against censorship. LOL)
"Liberals censoring everyone" I really don't see it. Liberals are just spineless capitalists being prude where it doesn't matter. "Conservative fighting for the freedom to uncensor." I really don't see that either. Conservatives are just mad at being called out so they hide behind their free speech martyrdom.

It is okay to think it's original and it's factual to know it is not. There is no such thing as original films. It's just a douchebag way of saying you like something.
Saw this this evening and it was genuinely amazing. So beautifully shot. It’s hilarious how polarised critic reviews are always a good indication of a film worth seeing.
When he said his name was Verg, and the dark scene with the sour taste, i knew it was Vergil. Lars Von Trier did an awesome job ! Jacks character, the Blake reference, etc. Good movie !
This is now second best film of all time! Number 1 still being Pulp Fiction. So many people did not understand this film at all, it went beyond people’s heads, and when you try to explain what it was all about people get overwhelmed! The whole movie is taking you through the mind of a psychopath, we see Jack’s thoughts, his visions, what’s going through his head etc. something that has never been done before. The whole movie is told through his thought process and his view on life, art etc. What makes it even more interesting is that he’s having constant talks, disagreements with his conscience (Verge played by Bruno Ganz.) But really he is fighting with himself. He’s evolving and devolving at the same time. So many people also missed out or forgot that 25% of this film is a satirical comedy. The ending also got so many people confused. Remember, it’s the mind of a psychopath, the whole segment of Jack going through hell was him dying (been shot by the cops) and having visions of going through hell and trying to get out of there so he can live! It made sense to me, and to me an original, magnificent piece of cinema and art, but unfortunately you may hate it!
People have been walking out of his screenings at cannes for years. You never really hear about how those who stay til the end part take in a standing ovation. I'm not "here because of the controversy" I'm here because I understand his darkest and I can't fucking wait to see this film.
Spoilers ahead: Because apparently the killer in this movie is depicted like an actual serial killer. A sadistic looser who slices of a woman's breast, kills children in front of their parents and tortures animals. Too far away from the fun violence we can enjoy with the entire family on a Saturday night.
arnemyggen personally, I think it’s about time that they portrayed a REALISTIC serial killer in a film. It’s not all about chainsaws and hockey masks. I just find it ridiculous that people were flipping out about it. If they can’t handle this, then they have no reason to even be in the theater watching it.
Agreed. Sometimes we need a reminder of what violence and sadism actually is. It's neither cool, smart nor entertaining like e.g. Hannibal will have us believe. It's nasty and unpleasant.
This movie is definitely not for the faint hearted, but if you're in two minds about seeing it there is obviously part of you that wants to watch it - so do it! Matt Dillon is fantastic in this role. The actor playing Verge in the movie (having a mental blank on his name but RIP) has a very soothing voice. I enjoyed it, it held my interest and entertained me, which is all one can ask for, right?
i am not a fan of von trier movies but this one has definitely done something to me...excellent performance by matt dillon ...this actor is unfairly underrated...smart script ...atmospheric music...reminded me of mother a bit...as far as the allegoric part is concerned...definitely a must see
2:33 usually in movies you see specks of light in the eyes to depict human emotion. His eyes are pitch black. There's nothing in him. This is a masterpiece
Movie critics weren't ready for this type of movie. This a movie you watch and observe it with an open mind and understand the mind of a serial killer. You aren't suppose to feel bad or root for the guy, the guy is just screwed up. It gives you understanding that serial killers can be just about anyone.
So, here is my two cents. Lars Von Trier, the director, is a fucked up guy. Bjork has ccome out saying he has sexually harassed and maybe even assaulted her and during the premier of his film Meloncholia, he said he thinks he can relate to Hitler. Not to mention, his movies often have some sort of perverseness to it. They almost come off as exploitative at times especially one like Nymphomaniac. The problem with him is is he's actually a wonderful director. People will have issues with how fucked up his movies is but the line at the end seems to be the director's actual thoughts. He clearly is a fucked up guy and likes to express these fucked up feelings in his films. That to me is almost the most horrifying thing.
nahh this is made by a talented filmmaker... that means it's more articulate story wise and it's visually literate. That's why critics walked out because it's an evil movie in all intents and purposes.
This is hands down one of the greatest horror movies I’ve ever seen. The ending literally shook me to my core. I’ve never been so fascinated and terrified.

As much as you may sound like a soar cinephile in repudiation of general process, I agree, brilliant film.
@@Brandon-tk2rw There are people that can't stomach this much violence or that simply didn't like the movie, you don't need to be smart in anyway to like it
It's not that hard to understand the ending.
One of the most overlooked underrated actors of all time. A great actor.
When I heard the majority critics walked out due to violence in the film. That really hyped it up for me.
Face-Fok Ltd. Look another ass hat who thinks he's smart
Face-Fok Ltd. I find your opinion shallow and the pedantic
Face-Fok Ltd. hey..stfu
Matt Dillon and Riley Keough deserve an Oscar for their performances.
WARNING to all the people who are not familiar with Lars Von Trier art. Do not look into it as just a thriller, it is much more than that.
The greatest film trailer of all time, hands down.
this will be a cult film
Ralph Lauren I hope it will, it was fantastic
Lars Von Trier is a sub-genre of its own
yeah, for the sickheaded ones....
I like how they say Uma Thurma, even though she’s in the film for five seconds
How would you know? Did you see it at Cannes today or something?
Das Kinophile ENTP I mean she got her head smashed in about 30 seconds into the trailer, I’m pretty sure she’s not going to be in the movie for that long
Theodore Williams then you haven’t seen his movies or the whole plot of the story
You do realize that trailers always out of sequence? She may have been killed within first few minutes of film, then again, could be half way through.
Joshua Davila probably, but I just don’t see a scenario where she survives. Besides no need to take this comment seriously, was just making a joke
Matt Dillon was always underrated!
ALWAYS! It's criminal.
Holy shit this looks brutal
D Mosh According to the first reports, it's even more brutal than the trailer suggests as there were a huge number of walkouts during the Cannes premiere.
Will C whoa... Most definitely going to see it now.
I'm a fan but jesus fkn christ this looks like a difficult one to watch. I'm sure he'll catch some shit for this one.
yeah but libs will walk out of anything..
tripp thats some fantasy bs right there.
How is people walking out of a Lars Von Trier movie news?
Frederick Core Agreed. The news about people being wheeled out of the complete "Nymph()maniac" premiere in Denmark after fainting was more newsworthy because no one, to the best of my knowledge, ever fainted watching a von Trier movie in the theater before.
@@AngelofMusic04 Some people fainted during the Cannes premiere of Antichrist
@@alexavila7700 They faked it. Hype.
@@VickiTakacs. How come?
i loved nymphomaniac vol 1 and 2. i would love to see this new movie but i don't know if i can stand sitting in with the audience right now.
LOL)
eNeNe How the world turns around. Liberals censoring everyone, and Conservative fighting for the freedom to uncensor. The fuck is happening lol
"Liberals censoring everyone"
I really don't see it. Liberals are just spineless capitalists being prude where it doesn't matter.
"Conservative fighting for the freedom to uncensor."
I really don't see that either. Conservatives are just mad at being called out so they hide behind their free speech martyrdom.
Jack Heathen
Called out? The opposite many try to censor via violence...and not even ignoring them is enough.
Shining a light? Or celebrating? From this trailer I can't tell. But it could be the latter.
he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'...
Tarynne D .
Tarynne D I am sorry to tell you that you are confusing Lars von Trier with Steven Spielberg
His eyes will deceive you; they will destroy you. They will take from you your innocence, your pride, and eventually your soul. These eyes do not see what you and I see. Behind these eyes one finds only blackness, the absence of light. These are the eyes of a psychopath.
Tell he bites into ya. Then ya hear that terrible high pitch screamin. Then they all come in and tear you to pieces. 👍
Charlie are you doing jaws right now?! We don't have time for that ...
R.I.P Bruno Ganz, great actor
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
ok im out
GAN0R0 well said
You've killed it, bro!

Probably not in sync with whatever is being conveyed here but allowing some foreigners to buy parts of his house and not live in it will make Jack the Union Jack 🏡🏰🏨🏙🏭

Looks original. I’m in
Serial killer films are not original.
J_Jammer no but knowing the director it’s most likely an original approach
Being graphic with death is not at all original.
J_Jammer ok
It is okay to think it's original and it's factual to know it is not.
There is no such thing as original films. It's just a douchebag way of saying you like something.
I watched this movie last night, and loved it! I wish Matt Dillon would get the recognition that he's deserved since he was a kid!
cannot stop watching this trailer. so well put together.
I love Uma and Matt! I love that they played Fame by David Bowie. Takes me back. He was such a great artist.
Veronica Salas + That's what I'm saying! I can't see him killing Uma in this film. I think she kicks his ass in the end.
Martin Curry I know! She was very bold talking to him in that “Kill Bill” no nonsense manner.
Veronica Salas + She is The Bride, after all.
Saw this this evening and it was genuinely amazing. So beautifully shot.
It’s hilarious how polarised critic reviews are always a good indication of a film worth seeing.
lars von trier is pure class, no other word to describe him, pure class
Never underestimate Lars von triar.
why he makes ponderous movies
Lars Von Tryhard
learn to write!
Rudra Das Lol von Trier is shit
Emilio Reyes bet you dont know Zimmer?
When he said his name was Verg, and the dark scene with the sour taste, i knew it was Vergil. Lars Von Trier did an awesome job ! Jacks character, the Blake reference, etc. Good movie !
I'll end up seeing this before Infinity War
good for you.
They die then get time reversed or ressurected next film
Infinity war's pretty good too. I totally recommend it.
anuj bajracharya Infinity war was hot garbage wth
Good to hear! This is an actual film and not mass produced garbage for the dimwitted
The shooting range was just twisted made me feel ill for days.
I can’t believe how this amazing movie got so much hate, gotta be one of the most misunderstood movies of this decade.
The average IQ of the sheeps I guess😉.
I think Matt Dillon had to return some video tapes.
American Psycho!!!!!! One of the greatest films, fantastic movie.
This movie was so uncomfortable and beautifully filmed. Incredible ending.
Matt Dillon was so good in this role 😊
“If you feel like screaming I definitely think you should”
RIP Bruno Ganz
Amen!
F
rip hitler
Jack is by far the most clear minded character I have ever seen in film history
A real life sherlock Holmes. Yes indeed the film is called the House that Jack built. Your life is building up to death
@@tom2197 Thanks very much. I appreciate that.
i think he is not shoted. he freeze in his fucking house
This trailer spoiled so much. Im glad i watched the movie first.
Just saw this at the opening night here in Australia - three hours of awesome! Five stars!
it's three hours long?
GreyVibez watch it
@@Blacks4Trump2024 yup, sorry I didn't realize it was released
@@SafeTripHome33 Just 2 and a half. Worth watching through though.
People have been walking out of his screenings at cannes for years. You never really hear about how those who stay til the end part take in a standing ovation. I'm not "here because of the controversy" I'm here because I understand his darkest and I can't fucking wait to see this film.
I cant wait eiter. I have been fan of Trier since I was 14-15 years old. That Must be 2015.
A Lars von Trier horror film, I'm all in.
Matt Dillon is one of the best actors of our time and totally underrated! this is going to be a classic
I don’t know why people were so mad. This looks good.
TigerLily they were proboblly just freaked out oe disgusted, nit mad
TigerLily snowflakes can’t handle a good disturbing movie 🍿
This movie is definitely not for the faint hearted, but if you're in two minds about seeing it there is obviously part of you that wants to watch it - so do it! Matt Dillon is fantastic in this role. The actor playing Verge in the movie (having a mental blank on his name but RIP) has a very soothing voice. I enjoyed it, it held my interest and entertained me, which is all one can ask for, right?
One of the best movies in this category ❤
After watching the trailer I can’t help but picture Matt Dillon as the joker.
Carnage*
Don't let go Jack
Don't let go . . . . .
I'll never let go
Run home jack
The question is:
Where the hell is Steiner with his counter-attack?
Awesome flick. Saw it at a film festival. 10 people got up and left, so you know its good
i am not a fan of von trier movies but this one has definitely done something to me...excellent performance by matt dillon ...this actor is unfairly underrated...smart script ...atmospheric music...reminded me of mother a bit...as far as the allegoric part is concerned...definitely a must see
*YO-MARVEL*
This guy should be your next Green Goblin!
2:33 usually in movies you see specks of light in the eyes to depict human emotion. His eyes are pitch black. There's nothing in him. This is a masterpiece
For Von Trier it's just a competition against himself to make the movies weirder and weirder.
That's a sign of an interesting auteur director.
Perhaps cinema is not for you.
A film that Hollywood would never make. Thank you, independent film.
they made it a dozen times already lol. Psycho then a bunch of shitty sequels, then American Psycho, then Bates Motel lol.
This is the greatest comedy that has ever been produced... Could be better... But the best that's been produced.
For the people looking for the song played in the background
,it's Fame by David Bowie.
I first heard it in the movie called Rush.
I think it' s more important to tali about Glenn Gould playing and singing Bach.
thank you a lot
Von Triers films are works of art and I have to say at times emotionally exhausting but wonderfully challenging
The best trailer of all time! :D
Von Trier's magnum opus. This is a movie to reflect the times.
This movie was so fucking twisted. The realest gore has ever looked on screen, and the writing OH the WRITING. Such an all around great film.
For me the most disturbing thing in this film is the imaginary and the black humor
Movie critics weren't ready for this type of movie. This a movie you watch and observe it with an open mind and understand the mind of a serial killer. You aren't suppose to feel bad or root for the guy, the guy is just screwed up. It gives you understanding that serial killers can be just about anyone.
"Fame" has a different vibe since I watched this movie.
After wathing A Serbian Film I don't get all the controversy about this one.
a serbian film still takes all the cake and the left over when it comes to voilent and disturbing movies. nothing comes close.
That's why critics walked out because it's an evil movie in all intents and purposes.
exactly... he's a true artist whos making a great film about a horrible and evil subject. it's very horrifying
Bjork was not in melancholia for starters. A Serbian film was a film I couldn't finish. The baby part was it for me. At least Salo had deep meanings.
This is hands down one of the greatest horror movies I’ve ever seen. The ending literally shook me to my core. I’ve never been so fascinated and terrified.
