Why use a credit card? I have a Thai bank account, debit card and scan pay. Take cash and use ATM.

I thought I was pretty clear about it but I'll try it again. We mostly travel. I use a credit card because it's free to use, and I only use it for travel expenses, airfare, hotel reservation, fuel. Since I have to keep track of my travel expenses is it easier for me to keep it simple on a credit card. I use my phone for most of my everyday expenses, scan pay, and of course my Thai bank card for cash. I was only sharing my experience wasn't expecting you to relate or that our circumstances are the same. I choose not to travel with my money I have to pay a fee to get transferred into Thailand instead of using a plastic card that charges me no interest plus gives me pretty good cash back rewards for traveling. Just need to get a backup other than my Thai card. Thanks for sharing your scenario.

I always use my credit card when possible to earn rewards points, lesson chances of my Thai bank account hacked, and track my travel expenses then pay it off every statement. Everyone is different and so spend your cash if it works for you. We sometimes have to use cash in some locations that doesn’t accept CCs

youtubes music policy sucks really, it's rediculous that if you're a vlogger and you walk past a bar playing music and
they penalise you for it. it totally kills the vibe of videos if you have to cover or replace music, and yet there are thousands of channels streaming full albums and 24/7 chart hits on youtube, how hypocritical is that.

Nice video…thx for the coconut oil trick with sand fleas. We lived on the FL Atlantic coast for years and the no-see-um’s used to eat us alive. Credit card fraud seems to be a common problem. We use a mail forwarding service (Traveling Mailbox) to maintain a US address and they’re pretty quick with forwarding credit cards…typically 1-week.

Totally agree on the sea sickness reality! I was a very old hand on half day fishing boats, surfer, water skier, etc. Then joined the Navy, first time underway out of 32nd st. FPO SD, as a freshly minted Boiler tech on a DDG and I was sitting on the keel line in the bilges fixing to pop for about 3 hours, and then never again. I had buddies that had to keep those little medicated band-aid patches behind your ear on every time we were underway, weird how we're all a little different

Weirdly, mosquitoes don't bite me at all nowadays. My wife gets eaten alive. They just don't bother with me anymore. I also had the credit card fraud thing recently. 3 charges totalling about $300. Chuck, I keep two American cards. One from Costco as a back up and a United Explorer card that I mostly use for Airline miles which works with all Star Aliance partners. I tend to change both passwords every 6 months on both cards and make sure each password is unique and only used once and only for the card and nothing else. It helps but is also a pain. I have only been hacked once a long time ago when I used a card at a Best Buy for the first and only time. It is hard to get a CC if you are not working or don't have social security or a pension. Some places will give you one if you collect dividends though. My wife and I love watching you and Paige and enjoy your vlogs and we enjoy learning about Thailand and the surrounding areas. We live in Nakhon Phanom as well. Take care,
    Bill

After having my one card canceled years ago while traveling from Thailand to Kuwait where I worked at the time and had a 24 hour unscheduled layover in Abu Dhabi, the next time I went back to the States I applied for two more CCs and another ATM card from my credit union using my son’s USA address. Haven’t had an issue since even after one card was canceled while someone was shopping in Miami, FL while my wife and I were at a hotel in the northern mountains outside of Chiang Rai. I had the other cards and also a Thai Bank account if needed. Not sure how the illegal shoppers got my CC info as it was recently renewed after a previous card expiration date and I hadn’t had time to use the new card 😳

I've noticed that Bangkok Airways doesn't seem to accept US-based credit cards when booking direct on their website. I always have to use a third-party site to book them. It is pretty annoying that certain companies/vendors block foreign cards, but I assume they receive some sort of discount on their processing fees due to lower fraud. That's the only reason I have thought of for them to do it.

Apparently i purchased dinner in London for six people and fraud protection cancelled my card enroute to Seattle so when I arrived in Seattle my rental car was cancelled and I refuse to use a debit card for a rental car. Enjoyed the video Chuck and Paige. You bring up a major problem for expats and long term visitors, that is access to money. After many trips and nearly a year full time I have noted that each country has different fees attached to credit cards. Australian cards charge a users fee every time it’s used including a “foreign fee”?. So to that end I find it cheaper overall to use a Wise card. I use that to transfer cash from Aussie bank to Wise, then wise to BKK Bank. I have found that cash is still king and use it for most transactions. However, I use scan for Lotus and for fuel. Agoda and Lazada I use my Aus credit Card.
Having asked around most people from Australia have come to the same conclusion.

    • @notime2bsad
      @notime2bsad  4 місяці тому +3

Yes my friend thanks for sharing. Only sharing my experience, never brought up what others should do because we are all here for different reasons. I only use my scan pay from my phone now and if I tip I use cash while in Thailand. No fee for that. No matter how you send cash to thailand there is a fee. Credit card no fee if paid in full every month, or vender has an added charge. If Visiting best to bring cash and only pay exchange fee. I have never paid an additional fee on a credit card unless you get a cash advance. That I don't recommend doing overseas. I get rewards also on the card, if it gets hacked no worries. My scenario Again: We travel Mostly.... Credit card allows me to keep track of spending for Tax purposes. I need an additional card for backup since my bank is in USA and my address is in Thailand it takes time to get a replacement card. When you spend most time traveling you are subjected to scams and hacks, just part of it. You lose cash well up to you. We all have to do things that make sense. Just sharing my everyday life and how we manage living and full time traveling overseas.

Can you use Apple Pay in Thailand? This way you are not exposing your credit card number everywhere you shop or eat.

I only use my travels Rewards card for fuel, airlines, and hotels. 0 fee, cash rewards, and keep track of expenses while traveling full time overseas. Thanks for sharing.

chuck you noted that a debit card should not be used, but didn't elaborate on that?-i have a debit card to use as a back up to my credit card, but have not used it in thailand,is there a reason it should not be used in thailand?

CC card is secure so is debit but it is attached to real money you will actually be out of if it gets hacked until settled or not. Meant don't use as a credit card. Use only at ATM

We really enjoy your videos... Have you ever looked into getting a Wise card, you can preload it with Thbt, no fees unless you make an atm withdrawl

Not really put much thought into that. I don't have fees to use the credit card I have plus I get pretty good Cash back rewards for traveling which is what we do most of the time. Most of the time I just use scan pay on my phone from My Thai bank account it's pretty secure. Travel expenses I use on my credit card so I can also keep track of my expenses.

For resorts hotels etc I pay by cash only. Find it easier. Cash is king. I have 2 overseas credit cards but they are only used when necessary.

Thanks for sharing I mostly spend my time traveling overseas booking flights and hotels with cash not so sure. We mostly scan pay with our Thai account now. There is 0 fee to use a card overseas. There are fees however to send cash. My card gets hacked I get a new one no fees plus don't pay for the theft charges. Loose cash well up to you.
