100% with you on crossing the road. I used to live in Brussels and the first thing a local told me was it doesn't matter if the traffic light is red, you wait for the cars to stop, as they may not.

Thank you for the kind words. Good question. Soi dogs are normally friendly and relaxed but I’ve encountered a few hostile ones over the year. Most of the busy areas won’t have many but back streets can get small packs of dogs, and I would recommend being a bit cautious.
very lucky i moved here with a capital one card, being able to pay 10 baht on grab tips, or MRT tap, etc at the exact exchange rate with no fees is a life saver

Really enjoyed this video. It was very informative and well-produced. Recently Wise has raised their fees, I have explored other options, including Remitly, and XE to send money from the USA to Thailand. After comparing the fees, XE is cheaper but it takes longer. Wise did not increase so much that I will stop using it.
I will caution people though, do NOT leave a large balance on the card, or in your Wise account. There are many horror stories of accounts suddenly being closed and ZERO help from Wise on returning your fund balance to you.
That's good advice. I had this happen with Paypal before as well and stopped using that service altogether.

The new visa laws completely change all of the visa issues, definitely worth including as they go into effect June 1st!!
Yeah the rule changes are interesting.. although they haven’t changed most of the existing resident visas.. I’m still waiting to see the details. I’ll post a separate videos on the new visa laws later today or tomorrow tho. Thanks for the comment!
Really!!!?? So you mean I can travel to Thailand from Australia and stay there for 60 days without ever having to apply for a visa? I just get the stamp thing at immigration when I get to the airport and Im good? I hope thats the case I honestly thought it would have taken ages for it to come into effect

Switch your recording settings from 50Hz to 60Hz/ ntsc to pal…. It will stop the lights from flickering!

I was on an ED visa in 2014. The school office administrator accompanied me to a Kasikorn Branch and half an hour later I had an account. Still use it with Wise whenever I travel there. Have the app on the phone + standard web access. It's set to auto-top-up my phone number. Can do cardless withdrawal in the ATMs via the app and scan to pay when out and about. Works great.
What I'm saying is, a branch may be more prone to help if a local is accompanying.
This is correct. Actually there is a good chance that the admin has a personal contact at that branch. I’ve had a few accounts opened with different jobs and each employer opens all their accounts at a specific branch where they have a contact. Thanks for the input!
Are you still living in Thailand? If not, were you able to keep the account after you left Thailand?
The account will normally remain open even if you leave and spend significant time outside the country.

Just to pitch in, even in less business-focused areas you can still get a bank account at at least one of the big banks even without a work permit if you are on a non-tourist family visa and have the correct family ties on the bank’s list.

One question about International credit card without foreign transaction fee: can one use those credit cards to pay rent, utilities, phone, internet, 7-11, groceries, restaurant etc in Thailand? Thanks for the kind words! I don't think it would be possible to pay all the bills with an international card. Some places will accept credit cards (groceries, restaurants etc) but others won't (rent and utilities)...Cheers
@thebangkokguide You're very welcome. An idea occurred to me recently. As someone who is contemplating relocating to Thailand, things that need taking care of the very first are renting, visa, and immediately after settling in, buying grocery and daily necessities. Wondering if you would be interested in making a video on lists of agents / agencies and websites for finding rental, visa application, as well as major grocery stores (such as WalMart (Canada and the US) and Canadian Superstore , health food store brands like Whole Foods and Trader Joe in the US. Then Home Depot for hardware, or Canadian Tire etc) Hope you will be interested. Those resources will be really useful. Thank you. 😅
A lot of visa info changed yesterday and as of June 1st, tourists now get 60 days on arrival. A bunch of new visas are available too for muay thai, education etc...
This is correct. I left it out here as it didn’t change the residence visas much.. the DTV looks interesting though, but still a bit vague in terms of implementation. I’ll cover that update in a video soon.

Thanks! I was just reading about it today. Big announcement... but it is a bit short on actual specifics. This has been a familiar pattern for the current government, so let's wait and see! At first glance, it reminded me of the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa with a new name lol.

as far as i know you can get ATM transactions with a bank teller inside @no transaction fee
This is correct. I did this quite a long time ago and I recommended it in another tips video… but the last time I went to check the teller told me to go to the ATM lol…so I left it off here. Have you done it recently?

I bought this fella at the wonderful arts and craft shop known as Big C. It's actually a grocery store, but they have a section with quality locally produce art. I spotted it while grocery shopping! But if you are looking for a more authentic experience, Chatuchak has a large arts and crafts section...although it's a bit touristy.
@@thebangkokguide Lol did not expect Big C and assumed Chatuchak haha... would be cool to do a video about artists/craftsman. I assume like elsewhere a middle man brings the goods to Chatuchak or other touristy spots. Going direct to the artists would be more challenging I assume
Yeah, it's funny. I love checking out the markets, but when it comes to purchases... a lot of it comes down to convenience while I'm out shopping. But I was happy to see that the statue was locally produced. Unfortunately quite a lot of tourist products are just straight imports from China... although the government here has been trying to put more tariffs on the imports to support local producers. It will all be middle men with retail operators. I suspect you'd have to get pretty far out to find a local producer selling their own wares!
Thanks for another great video Cal! Some great information within. On a related note, do you (or any of your viewers) have advice on a low-cost method for keeping a US cell phone number while living in Thailand (primarily for receipt of financial institution two-factor authentication text messages)? Unfortunately my carrier (Mint) offers extremely expensive international coverage. I've looked at porting my number to Google Voice but have heard that some companies will not send 2FA texts via GV. Any direction you can provide would be greatly appreciated! 🙂
Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately I’m not familiar with a method that works for this, although I suspect there is a workaround. I’ve heard similar about Google and any other internet based numbers. I actually switched all my Canadian 2FA over to a Thai number and haven’t had any problems though.
@@thebangkokguide Thanks for your reply, Cal! I've spent hours today looking into this and, in brief, have discovered the following:
1) It seems many US folks engaged in long-term international travel are either foregoing keeping their home/domestic cell numbers for whatever reason or paying international carrier prices (I wish I had that kind of money!) 🤣
2) Porting existing numbers to virtual/VOIP services like Google Voice for the purpose of receiving 2FA SMS can prove unreliable and, in some cases, financial institutions (US and international) don't recognize the use of virtual numbers as a trusted method of communication for 2FA (with good reason ... yikes!).
3) Some budget friendly US folks have elected to keep their domestic number/service and only enable roaming data when they are expecting to receive a 2FA SMS.
For now, I think I'm going with option 3 while also keeping a second phone for local Thai SIM data usage (apps, maps, etc).
I'm hoping members of your awesome community might be able to provide some insight and experience on this in further hope of paying some knowledge and experience forward to future others who might also be seeking similar solutions. In the meantime, I'll keep searching!

@@ignatiobuns4853Verizon has an unlimited PREPAID package for $50 a month and an extra $100 a month for international roaming. Or you can do $10 a day for international roaming. If you sign up for alerts from your bank or credit card for suspicious activity, you will need the extra hundred dollars add on. I have used Airalo for travel and the amount came to about the same $100 but without the benefit of being able to use my phone to call.
Or, you could do the $35 prepaid package with Verizon and get the $100 add on and at the same time have a local second line with unlimited data.
But, if you travel or move every 3 months from one country to another in South East Asia, it’s probably better to just get the prepaid unlimited $60 package.

As of now, the DTV is a bit unclear.... I'll cover that in more detail in the video, and it's why I avoided adding it to this video. It's a bit of a wait and see situation at the moment! The ED visa is a solid backup option if you are alright with studying!

You mentioned opiates are hard to obtain, but said most others are possible to obtain. What about ADHD type medication, such as adderall, where the the main compounds are amphetamines/stimulants?
Good question. Amphetamine based drugs are illegal in Thailand. You can get a prescription for certain medications (eg ritalin) at a clinic or pharmacy. I'd recommend a clinic called Medconsult.
At least for the short term everything is different now with the revised visa laws.
Let’s see what happens with the implementation! This government definitely likes to make big announcements. I’ll do an update on that one soon.

Many big cities in the United States are now occupied by homeless people. I heard that Canada is about to be like the United States. Vancouver is also occupied by homeless people.
Lots of homeless people in both countries… there is a drug problem due to fentanyl that is causing a lot of the problems. It’s unfortunate

@thebangkokguide I strongly disagree because it's calculated with an agenda. Mostly financial(surprise surprise) and other times to use you to practice English. Never a real smile at the end of the day, that's how it is there. I was there a long time, speak Thai and the Isaan language. You especially find out the truth if you speak Isaan, that's where most of the hate towards us comes from, and ironically, they smile at us the most. I'd rather those stuck-up ones in the high-end malls who wouldn't give us the time of day, at least, they're being honest and not using us, despite hating us. Money is God there, and add to that it's an extremely Xenophobic place.

Only the average salary in Thailand is about 420 usd not 700 usd

But I guess 420 is the start salary (~15,000 thb) for the bachelor degree holders. Right here, we are indicating the 'average' salary, so it could be 700 USD. IMO

I’m not sure what is funny about that, but, anyways, it is fairly close to the Bank of Thailand numbers. Not sure where he pulled it from specifically but it’s pretty easy to Google because Thailand publishes a lot of data online for anyone to look through.
