A gross oversimplification about Supertramp might be: Roger Hodgson tends to be soul-searching, spiritually optimistic - in an almost child-like way - in his compositions; and his voice is very much like that with his high tenor. Rick Davies tends to be hard-lined and pragmatic in his world-view; his voice, very much like that as it's deeper, earthier, and it sounds like he knows how to sing a complaint. Each writer tends to sing his own respective compositional contribution (much like the Beatles). The remaining three are world-class musicians, highly intelligent, who always know the precise thing to bring to a song. I generally describe Supertramp as sublimely perfect "proper geometry"... while it lasted. In the end, Roger's and Rick's polarity would split that perfection and Roger left in 1983, ending the halcyon period of the band.

Apparently, Rick's wife had much to do with Roger's leaving. Rick & wife considered themselves the band's managers, and their decision making was increasingly antipathic to Roger.
I saw Roger's final show with Supertramp, at the Montreal Forum. They had hired a number of extra musicians and back-up singers, and most of them had nothing to do for so much of the time, that the show turned out boring. Too many stiff bodies standing lifelessly about.
Interestingly, the band hired U.S. multi-instrumentalist and hi-range vocalist Mark Hart to replace Hodgson. Too bad the new music was no good. By the late 80s, Mark Hart had joined the great Crowded House, recording and touring with them on many of their best albums. Hart is super-talented.

Great reaction thanks. This song quite possibly saved my life. It gave hope where there was only hopelessness. I love this band and most especially Roger Hodgson. Roger left Supertramp at the peak of their fame to be at home as a parent to his children. If you get the opportunity to see him live do it. I saw him right before the pandemic and he has not lost anything in his vocal abilities. "Why must we be so cool, oh so cool. Oh , we're such damn fools"

Cary, Roger was the last live act I saw also before the pandemic hit. His voice has not changed over all these years!
From the stage, Roger Hodgson told this song he has written like a prayer; as he does more often. Hide in your shell he said, is the most requested song at his live concerts.

Far and away MY favorite Supertramp number. Both times I saw them in concert, they opened the show with "Hide In Your Shell". Check out "Gone Hollywood" from "Breakfast In America".

the reason I became a fan back in the 70s -were at a concert i Copenhagen with 600 spectators - shortly after they played for enormus crowds.

No, the band has publicly stated that it is NOT a concept album, but the fact that it sounds like one makes it even cooler, IMHO
The beauty of albums when they came out in those days was that the lyrics were printed on the back, so you could follow as the music played.

They were really on quite a roll starting with this album. Crisis? What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments, and Breakfast in America. So many good to very good to excellent tunes.
After four and a half decades I've finally learned the name of this superb and instantly recognizable tune! Just an ear-candy overload!

Hey guys. Wish there was a way for you to have listened to Hide In Your Shell from the Live Paris album. That version is outstanding. This one is okay, but not quite the same.
I truly hope you will be hitting the album, Even in the Quietest Moments, at some point. Not a bad song, and truly some of Supertramp's best work.

I agree totally. Roger tortures every ounce of emotion out of that Paris version. It feels as though you can't cry any more and then...oh yes you CAN!
2 songwriters / leaders in.Supertramp. Roger Hodgson comes from a British folk/rock influence whereas Rick Davies’ influences were American jazz and R & B. That was the great thing about this band, the music had different “flavours”, depending on who wrote what. Then the excellent other musicians (Bob, Doug and John) do yeoman’s work at their craft and make amazing, timeless music. Listened to these guys since 8-tracks were a thing; their music never becomes stale. Peace from Toronto!

My favorite Supertramp song: "Hide in your shell cos the world is out to bleed you for a ride/What will you gain making your life a little longer?" Rather than hiding in our shell, this spiritual song encourages us to reach out to those in need. Brilliant lyrics. Brilliant song. Brilliant album.
One of my favorite all time groups. Their album BREAKFAST IN AMERICA released in 1979 spawned 4 US Billboard hit singles. The album stayed at # 1 for 6 weeks. Supertramp has an unique sound that can't be duplicated. So happy you guys are featuring the group. Other songs worth listening to are SCHOOL, RUDY, TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME and GOODBYE STRANGER. keep up the good work.

I remember reading a great interview with one of the engineers on Breakfast in America. He said that Bob Siebenberg had the lightest kick drum foot he had ever known and this gave them huge scope to up the bass guitar without overloading the mix. The American record execs were really not used to this and were horrified, "You really want to do this?" Hell yeah!!!

Supertramp had an excellent 5-album run from 1974-80. I have been a fan since 1974, which is when 'Crime of the Century' was released. It is a crime (pun intended) not to listen to the album start to finish. "Hide in Your Shell" was written and sung by Roger Hodgson (lead and backing vocals, guitars, piano, keyboards). The other primary songwriter is Rick Davies (lead and backing vocals, piano, harmonica). Roger and Rick were 2 founding members. Supertramp had released 2 albums prior to 'Crime' that didn't do well and were vastly different. They started looking for other musicians in 1973 to record something else. The other musicians who answered the trade ads in London were John Helliwell (backing vocals, woodwind instruments, keyboards), Dougie Thompson (bass) and Bob Siebenberg (percussion). I was fortunate enough to see them live twice (1975 & 1977) and they were soooooo good!! 💙💙💙💙💙
You really should check out Supertramp's sadly overlooked, but great self entitled debut album from 1970 - full of great tunes and interesting lyrics, a sign of great things to come.

I love how she gives nothing away till the song is finished. Maybe the very first finger snap seemed to draw her attention but otherwise, watching her face I got the distinct feeling she wasn't even enjoying it and was perhaps bored or simply politely bearing with it, so concentrated was she. Then the big smile at the end. 😊
That's definitely the way I listen to music too. FOCUSED. Maybe a tear streaming from my eye from the sheer joy of the genius I'm hearing. It's probably why I don't dance - I'm enjoying myself too much to be making my body pop about!
