I'm from Milwaukee, this album was released in September of '74, the beginning of my senior year of high school. This album was a huge hit in Milwaukee, for some reason - more so than anywhere else in the US. There were actually rumors around the country that Supertramp was from Milwaukee. I think this was their best album, others sold more but they sort of became more commercial. This one seemed to me to come more from their soul, just extremely well constructed. Saw them live in Milwaukee shortly after the release of this album, in a smaller venue - a theater with something like 1,500 to 2,000 seats. A great, great show! Thanks for doing this album, a favorite of mine for sure!

I cant wait for this ! another epic end song like Child Of Vision And Fools Overture . They often extend their songs live , especialy when Rick gets carried away on the piano , every live version of Another Man`s Woman is different as he just jams . Rick Davis is the Dave Gilmour of the piano . Incidently when Roger Hodgson left the group the title song of Supertramps 1st album , Brother Where You Bound is 16 minuets long and Dave Gilmour plays guitar on it !

@@SightAfterDark I actually saw Supertramp perform the, “Crime of the Century” album, in concert back in 1975) can’t remember the exact date) it was their first time in North America. They had a multi level stage, an amazing light show, including a large circular screen and the sound was unbelievable. They actually brought the studio sound engineer with them to mix sound for these concerts. They also had an acting troop that preformed during some of the songs, like “Rudy”. I was an incredible night.

    Picture this.
1975. First date with my wife to be was a Supertramp concert. The only songs we heard before hand were Dreamer which got a lot of airplay, at least in Montreal, School, Rudy and sometimes Asylum. The group played this album chronologically.
When this song started the screen behind the band showed the outer space starfield at rest. When the extended finale started the stars started to move towards us. Remember, this was before computers and screen savers. The only other thing that resembled it was from Star Trek's opening credits.
Then, a bright light at the center started to grow, as if we were getting nearer to a star. Right at the climax the light in the center became recognizable as the hands gripping the prison bars - the album cover - and then the forward motion stopped.
Spine tingling chills - and a forever memory.
It is freaky that you pictured a version of this while listening to this gem! Kudos!
We still catch Roger Hodgson's show every year when his tour stops in Ontario, and we both still love this old music. It doesn't get stale for us.

When you look up " how to close an album"...this is the first entry...epic masterpiece is an understatement. Also, their concert closer...the live version from the " Paris " album is slightly different( synths instead of strings), but still epic. Glad you appreciated this, and Supertramp too...the singer here, the " grit " guy, is Rick Davies...the high pitched guy is Roger Hodgson

Rick Dave's first sings from the abyss, Roger then plays his guitar from the abyss, the percussion then dumps falling epically into the abyss, the keyboards then establish a repetitive round and round hell that can't be escaped from, the strings join in with the doom, then the sax, and finally the trailing off of the harmonica.
Always exit early leaving them with wanting more!

Rick Davies is the singer on this one. I have read that the album is a loose concept of a disillusioned you man (Rudy) looking at events in the world and of not knowing how to find his place in it and discovering that he himself shares responsibility for problems he perceives. The cover itself tells the story of someone who has a whole universe of possibilities, ......and yearns to escape the cage of his own construct. Many layers to unpack here, and one needs to listen to the entire album to appreciate the brilliance of these men. After fifty years, their work is as relevant today as it was then. A pretty good working definition of genius.

I suspect that Supertramp may well be up there with a whole raft of bands/performers/artists/creators who can be considered "most underrated"... To pinpoint "why" would be even more impossible now than it was back then!!
I guess it boils down to "sometimes there are just somethings that just don't seem to make sense; but they just are"... though, just as with most things there are often clues that can fill in at least a comprehensive enough picture, that some conclusions may be able to be made - such as the effect even back then of "preconceived notions" of what rock or prog or goth or punk or whatever flavour the so-called experts would determine new music fell into without any question by enough listeners of whether those so-called 'experts' actually even knew how to play an instrument themselves.
Thus, there were times bands like Supertramp were not 'discovered' by some of us young folk back then by listening to the radio or reading the music press, but more by our network of friends who didn't mind exposing themselves to new music, or sometimes simply because the album art indicated 'something different'! There wasn't any digital media or social networking back when these bands made their first releases like there has been since the turn of the Century. Sometimes, albums like Crime Of The Century reached different parts of the world long after they were released in the land of their creation; especially if they weren't backed by the "big labels" or had amazing PR managers. It was a different - and no doubt harder to conceive of from a younger persons perspective today; time back then.
But the music that came from then, is not only part of everyone on planet Earth's history - it's also a whole palette of sounds, approaches to co-ordinating the noises we humans make with the tools we've honed over centuries for just that purpose (even if you could use some as weapons if needed!!) into aural waves that can "speak to us" (even if that "us" just happens to be a rare few rather than every last one!), that can be learnt from, copied, played with or improved, tossed aside as folly or admired for what it was and is while moving on from it.
Keep up the excellent work guys!! 👍👍 That's applicable to both your music and your reviews!! 🙂

    IMHO…
On the eighth day after creation, when God was done resting, He created Supertramp. The band to which all others must be compared.

I've watched enough of your reaction videos to know you'd appreciate the Dixie Dregs - Night of the Living Dregs. If I had to pick a single introductory track it would be either Punk Sandwich or The Bash but really, the whole album is outstanding from end to end. Much love and respect -J-

Steve Morse is great - I saw him once open solo for McLaughlin, Dimeola and Di Lucia, and he stole the show hands-down, imo -most I'm not at all familiar with, but I hope they do pick at least some to react to.

*"Streets: A Rock Opera"* by *Savatage.* (1991)
*"The Last Waltz"* by *The Band.* (the documentary directed by Martin Scorsese is your best bet) (album AND doc both released in 1978)

Yeah, you gotta listen to Fool's Overture. Vocals are by the higher voiced singer Roger Hodgson, rather than the gritty voice of Rick Davies, but it's a cinematic trip.

This song has all... guitar. Sax, piano, strings.... but the drums..... Ben C. Benberg!!! Song is way too short as all tracks on this album but there are longer live version of this specific song wherr you get a bit more... Sax!! and the final note at 5:35... giving the release of the entire album.
    Great reaction by you two

I went to an early Supertamp concert in Manchester UK back in 1975 just after the release of their signature album Crime of the Century, and followed them since then. I disagree with this couples view on the bands respective singers. Roger Hodgson (higher voice) is THE real voice of Supertramp. Rick Davis is the lead singer in this track (Crime of the Century) and is excellent too. But Roger has that ethereal and dreamy quality, that truly elevates the band. To be honest I don’t think this couple quite gets them

Not knowing if you have showcased it or not...PLEASE listen to David Bowies "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" (and "Hunky Dory") both of which are Ken Scotts genius from behind the recording console, the latter being recorded at Trident Studios in London, at the time arguably the best recording in the world. Peace

Was thinking that too as I watched Sight's "insights" (pardon the pun) post their listen... Horns - too my ear at least; would have been to 'stark': but, another reed/woodwind instrument seemed like it could fit. It's just that the sax solo at the end of the track is just as much of a tangy sauce dollop laid on top of already perfectly selected ingredients, that have been carefully prepared; cooked with love and skill, yet knowing there's still one last 'touch' that will make the memory of the feast linger even long after the sound has left the ears, just as the taste has left the tongue.
