Great footage! Some important missed info.: The video footage of the "big board" with the nose rocker that Duke was surfing with the double bladed paddle was a gift from the Aussie life guards he trained. It was an early surf ski that the was an Aussie invention from 1914 in Port Macquarie. There was no mention of the folks who stand up paddled white water rivers of which there is a rich history from around the world. They do it on logs, bamboo, canoes, inflatable kayaks and most recently on SUP'S.
Yes, thanks for the details. It was hard to fit everything in the 5 min. format. I'll add your comment to the website that goes along with the video here: www.blueplanetsurf.com/service/historyofpaddleboarding/
I'm just getting into my first ever SUP and I am loving your videos. They're informative and concise, please keep 'em coming! Have an awesome day, happy to like & sub.
Great video, really interesting, Hello from across the pond in Leeds England😅 where there's been a recent boom in SUP popularity, it's done my mental health wonders, it's quickly become a large and special part of my life and I think I'm gonna become a big fan of your channel too🙂
Now that was a fun and extremely interesting video. Thank you for that! And for anyone reading this...if you're looking for a very functional, well made, high quality SUP...and one that is from a company that provides great service...get a Blue Planet. And I'm speaking from experience, as I have purchased 5 of their boards over the past several years. They look and surf great, and I love every one of them!
Great history lesson. Thank you! By the way, I'm still going strong here in Santa Cruz, CA on the 9'5 Starboard Widepoint I bought from you guys a few years back. You should open a shop here!
Thank you Kai, stoked you are still going strong 💪 on your widepoint! A shop in Santa Cruz would be great but for now we got our hands full with two shops on Oahu though we ship worldwide 🌏🤙🏼
Yes, same thing in most places. Here in Hawaii it peaked during the pandemic and has been shrinking as foiling is becoming more popular. There is still a solid core of sup surfers here but currently not much growth from newbies getting into it. I think that may change over the next couple of years as it’s hard to beat the versatility and ease of sup surfing for the average user. 🤙🏼
This is great Rob! Thanks for making this video!
Great to hear you liked it, thank you Jen! 🤙🏼

Awesome, love it! ❤️🤙🏼
Nice! I started in 2013 when the sport was still in its infancy here in Sweden. It took off quite strong in the last 2 years.
💪Sweden is a great place to paddle 🤙🏼
Great video, thank you! I remember the guy with the hard hat kept cigarettes in his hat and would have a smoke while he surfed.
Haha, yes Pops Ah Choi was a unique character, the pioneers of the sport were definitely a little eccentric and did their own thing🤙🏼
Awesome and concise 🤙
Thank you, it’s not easy to summarize everything in 5 minutes.
Very interesting video! Thanks for sharing the history of the sport.
Thanks Monique! 🤙🏼
FANTASTIC summary Robert! Thank you for putting this together! (-Kristin Thomas)

A lot less sup surfing going on in the San Diego area than just a few years ago.
