- SUP Tip: Catching waves and bumps on a Stand Up Paddleboard: Flatwater drills. If you want to get ready for a SUP downwinder, here are some drills to get ready in calmer waters before you go out in the open ocean waters:
1) Do three to five quick acceleration stokes. For more tips on how to do these quick acceleration strokes, please also watch this video:

2) Glide and skim the paddle as shown in the video
3) once you are comfortable with going from quick acceleration strokes to gliding and skimming, you can work on moving your feet back and into a staggered/ surf stance while bringing your hips forward. For tips on how to move your feet around on the board, also watch this video: • SUP tips: Keep feet fr...

I thought that. That if caught bumps and waves. I was catching bumps this afternoon and falling off after walking backwards. Like this video explains I should really move forward again or just maintain surf stance in middle of board. I’ve had ten or fifteen bumps and 5-10 waves standing and walking great stuff ALOHA from me a distance anyway but in your hearts
Just keep doing it and you will master it with enough practice.
I love the Blue Planet Surf videos. I have just started watching surf videos and a lot of the ones on other channels and on Tubi are full of profanity and unhealthy stuff. But you guys always keep it clean and set a great example from what I have seen so far. Aloha and God bless y'all!

Sounds good thank you
Thanks !!!
🙏😎🤙🏼
Excellent tips!!... I hope I remember it when I'm on the water.
Thanks @blueplanetsurf, watched this last night then spent an hour this morning on a local lake getting in some practice time. Very helpful!
Great! 😎🤙🏼

Excellent video 👍🏻
Thanks again Gecko Gal, good to see you are going through the instructional videos, I appreciate your comments. Aloha! 🤙🏼
I thought that the ‘Hockey Pokey’ was “what it’s all about”? ... nope.
Short strokes. Soul arch. Bump riding.
Yep ... you are right. This is WAY better!!
Again, thanks from Australia! 😀🕺🏻🎥🏖🇦🇺
I almost made it out into the surf today with no falls! In the way out the river mouth. But soon got OWNED by some tiny 3 ft waves 🌊
Thanks for all the tips! I never FG or get the people that help me, so our time will come 😀
Thank you Brad, good to hear, cheers Mate🌊🏄♀️🌏🤙🏼
Think you just tied it all together for me.Great stuff thx.
+Geordie Harrower - stoked!
Shut up old man. You're a boomer
Thanks Robert. I have been watching your videos for years and have learned a lot. I have been struggling with downwinders though. I see that I have had my weight too far forward. Now I have something new to practice.
It’s common for people to think that standing forward makes it easier to catch bumps but if you don’t move back, the board won’t release and glide and just plow through the water.🤙🏼
I have a displacement board, do I use the same strategy as for a planing board?
Thanks man. I went out today for my third ever session and got OWNED by even just some small rollers and crumbles in the river. Particularly when trying to paddle with the swell!! 😬
Hi Brad, thanks for the comment, paddling in rapids is a whole different set of challenges with the eddies etc. Have you seen my video about paddling through the Grand Canyon? ua-cam.com/video/FvasH6iyl7c/v-deo.html
Great information. Hoping I can implement these techniques on an inflatable SUP on the ocean of east coast Florida. I wish I wasn’t so nervous about moving my feet.
Practice with tiny mini hops first 👍😎🤙🏼
@@blueplanetsurf thank you. Tomorrow I’ll be taking it out at Sebastian Inlet. Fingers crossed.
Very informative, nice. However, it would have been good to see the full wipe out beginning at about 2:58 when the red board nose curled, in order for us to learn what not to do.
There were three of us taking off on that wave and the OC1 (one man outrigger canoe) could not straighten out, his boat got pulled to the right and he basically took out Jeff and me as we could not get out of his way. This video has a longer version and slow motion of this sequence at 3:00: ua-cam.com/video/TK5DkYw1hKI/v-deo.html
Thanks, quick response. Just saw the slomo video and even though the OC1 took you out, you can clearly see that Jeff was going down before you guys bumbed into him. The red and white SUP's nose was already wedged down into the surf before the collision. Although all in all it's a great video, excellent SUP wave surfing. Aloha from Puerto Rico.
Yes but the reason Jeff on the red board fell in is because he was trying to avoid the canoe. He would have made the drop if he could have dropped straight down the wave.
In this post we share some tips on how to surf on 14' raceboards:

Are vests not required by law in USA? Just curious 😊
The coast guard requires life jackets in most of the US. In Hawaii, however, SUPs are considered surf craft and life jackets are optional.
Hi, how can I recognize a bump or good bump? 🙏🙏
Look at the bumps in front of you and try follow a steep bump in front of you, it will fell like it’s pulling you along 🤙🏼
