My thought would be the split sprocket expanding away under the centrifugal load, putting a bigger gap at the joints and stretching the links under load.
Thanks for the insight, guys. After reading your comments, I think you're spot on about the split sprocket being the issue. It sounds like the wobbling or slight misalignment at the splits could be causing the chain to catch and eventually break, especially at high speeds like 100 mph. The idea about the centrifugal load expanding the gaps makes sense too-those forces might be enough to stretch the chain or create more slack, leading to failure.
This and need to step up chain size. They are using chain rated for 5 maybe 10 HP on a 40+ HP engine. Frankly I'm surprised a chain that small passed inspection.
Right maybe run a 520 chain I have a dirt bike with about that hp ripping wheelies and doing 80-90 on the highway just hit 5k miles with that chain and it still looks good I'd say keep it simple use what every motorcycle on the road is using solid sprockets and a 520 chain(Id use a oring chain RK or DID don't use cheap chains) that should handle it no problem
I was watching from the start area waiting to run and saw that chain break, Ike did an awesome job keeping it upright. It looked way sketchier in person than the video conveys. Also, thanks for checking out my CB500 just before my run. Can't believe I made it back for another run and you guys were still there. Great job bringing some of the Bonneville experience to all your viewers.
That bike sounds wicked. Reminds me of similar bikes cruising the Milwaukee Lake Front back in the 80’s. But those wannabe racers had stretch swing arms.
Imagine working on something for 2 years. Driving across country with no AC for 30+ hours with a bike strapped to the roof for the chain to explode from all the Johnnie Berry horsepower.
@@WyFoster I can see the frustration but after 2 years don't you think you would've taken things like an extra chain with you. In the video you hear ike say it happened before so they knew it could've been an issue. I would've brought a few spares if I knew the chain/sprocket was a failing point
Absolutely love this vid and its a whole new level for the channel! Bonneville is all or nothing.. highest of highs, lowest of lows. Personal experience ... split rear sprockets can't take that kind of power. Waiting for Part 2 .. hoping for the best foe you all. Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
So nice to see great coverage in a broader sense of the event. Too many videos are just narrowed down to individual efforts. I think you found a great balance between covering your own effort and others to really give a feel of the atmosphere at the event. Well played.
I have lost count of the number of times I have made one pass at the track, and ended up on the trailer because something failed. You are still in there swinging, hopefully you better your goal!
#35 chain is your biggest problem. The power pulses of a 50+ hp. motor is enough to rip that chain apart as soon as the clutch locks in (and from the looks of it, that's exactly what's happening). Go to 420 or even 520 motorcycle chain and sprockets, and you'll eliminate your weak link, and most likely, make a spectacular run! Good luck you guys.😉👍👍
Happy birthday, Ike! Two major failures you can walk away from is a pretty good birthday present! I know you're discouraged, but if it was easy, everyone would have a world record! Besides, you don't want a gimme; it'll taste a lot sweeter when you have to work for it. Good luck, guys, and keep swinging!
A friend of mine who's now long past, once said that if your running a rear sprocket that's an even number of teeth on a single cyl' bike you should NOT run an even drive sprocket as it sets up strange harmonics that chew things up, He proved it on an other friends KLR 650 which had a problem with chewing up sprockets, as soon as we changed the front cog to an odd number of teeth the carnage all went away, to say that we were surprised was an under statement....
I think it was a combo between the power of the engine, weight, and the split sprocket. I love that you guys didnt give up. Cant wait for the next video.
Y'all went to Bonneville and did runs. You win. Im 55 and always wanted to do something y'all did and it never happened. Next time can you guys swing up to Detroit and pick me up? Stick a camera in the frame pointed at the chain and sprockets, one by the engine and one in the rear by the rear tire. I agree with the comments below on the split sprockets, definitely steel split if they make them and solid steel for sure. From there a bigger chain. The cameras will tell you if it's a chain control issue or a sprocket issue. I can't wait to see the next episode. I looks like a totally amazing experience. Thanks for sharing!
C+Cs, my near stock XJ 650 Yamaha made 54 HP and used a heavy duty motorcycle chain that 135 is go kart chain not suited for 50 HP! Go bigger on the drive chain + sprockets and you will eliminate most of your issues! Your Bonneville beast with that extra-long chain is not a go kart!
Speaking from similar experiences at Bonneville, I'd say your issue is the length of the chain run. We were shucking chains, among other problems, on a couple of bikes with similar long runs. The solution for us was nylon sliders above and below both the upper and lower chain runs to keep it from slapping up and down at speed. Once we did that, the chain issues went away.
I'm really impressed with your determination and creativity. Bonneville is a strange world. I ran there once in my 1968 Charger and the salt was not in very good condition. It had a very thin crust and crumbly underneath. It was very difficult to apply full power and the wheelspin was always a problem. At 140 MPH it was still slipping and scared the crap out of me. I could not ever get all the power down and kinda bailed. Waltzing around at high speed like a hog on ice convinced me to stop while I still had a car to drive home. I wish you all the best and hope you get home safely. I look forward to more of your creative adventures.
@@DubiousNookie My car was made before the gas mileage restrictions were in place, so it was still open underneath, not having a belly pan or other restrictions. Hey guys, you are still making some of the best videos out there! Your chain issue is normal for failure its length. The chain tries to be round, centrifugal force becomes incredible. The chain gets pulled apart. That is why drive shafts are used in high speed equipment, and long timing chains have those long channeled guides. I hope this helps, I am certain that this is the problem.
You are certainly incorrect because there are plenty of motorcycles that are running 300+ horsepower with a chain. It’s all about the size and design of the sprocket. It would be fine.
Single cylinder engines put out power in hits that essentially jerks the crap out of the chain each time the cylinder fires. You might try rigging up a rotary dampener on the crank to try to reduce that a little bit. Just a thought. Also if you're running a light flywheel swapping to a heavier one could help.
You guys are awesome! I just recently found your channel and have watched everything I can get my hands on. To build a land speed bike from the ground up and make it this far is a great accomplishment.
C+Cs, I was with my brother and his business partner at Bonneville in 1972. They set a 125cc record running the 3rd engine, one didn't run the other ate the cylinder. Because of a paperwork glitch on the part of the Speed Week officials their record wasn't official. They were invited back to do a makeover run for no entry fee but couldn't afford to close their Cycle Shop for another week! Bonneville can be a punishing place! Better luck next year!

Chain harmonics. All chains have a wave while running. Think bull whip! When the harmonic has to abruptly stop to go around the sprocket that’s the end of the bull whip. POW massive force. Cmon guys my name is on that bike lol.

After burning clutches up on my rig, i read on a Facebook post about Lucas power steering stop leak. My systems 2 years old now, and it’s still mint service it quarterly
Hi guys. It's not the 'power' of the engine that is killing your chain. It's the chain-'slapping'. Surprisingly strong forces in that. ( I know a bit about this stuff. I hold two motorcycle records at Bonneville )
😂Everyone seems so nice and willing to help, but that bird at the very end was actually a spy sent over from the teams that know when you get a chain to stay on this beast you will be the vehicle to beat. Smile Ike, and happy birthday. You got this! With a lack of knowledge on what all the factors are that are involved with the chain issue, I think frame rigidity may be a factor. Check the chain tension with someone bouncing on the seat to see if the frame is flexing. (I know you are already home but just throwing out ideas. Also it might work fine for John, so I'm looking forward to the next episode. Stay safe and THANK YOU for everything you do. P.S. We know exactly what Dad said when you bleeped him out! 🎉

that long chain whipping about will put some big load spikes in, maybe add some rubbing strips to limit how far it can move? Side panels off and film what's going on.
Been to Bonneville once in 90, what a place and still everyone is open and really nice, just laid back atmosphere. We had a fueling problem on our drag car spoke to 1 guy and it solved our problem 1st time kut😊

Harley has been running Kevlar belts for over 50 years without any breaking. My 2003 Super glide had over 60,000 miles on it over 10 years, and it produced 80 ft pounds of torque. I never changed a belt.
Chain needs to be saturated in oil before use. Due to heat friction on chain will cause stretching and breaking. To help prevent chain snapping gradually flow throttle til max speed don’t save throttle till the end get it going and keep throttle rotating don’t let off. By doing this will keep chain at full tension and allow your ride to keep pulling to maximum speed. Once you let off throttle the chain will buckle and stretching happens faster. Keep throttle rolling till it’s maxed. No let offs
This is one reason thumpers use cush drives on the rear wheel. Tames the impulse from the single cylinder and uses it more efficiently over the entire stroke.
Man that's frustrating and exciting all at the same time , just be thankful for what you accomplish no matter what , you guys are doing a great job 👍 God Bless and I hope it finally goes your way .
Also one more think if anyone runs split sprockets people also run an ring plate they bolt on both sides of the split sprocket like on racing carts for dirt track they help hold the split sprockets from flex an pertect them an helps the chain to stay on . And if you convert to a solid sprockets like on dirtbikes you need to run a chain guid they bolt on rite before the rear sprockets and the chain runs threw it an helps keep a loose chain on . There made out of plastic or nylon im thinking you guys need atleast a bigger size chain and a chain guid
Oh man the struggle is real!!! You keep plugging away at it and you will get there. I understand the frustration that Ike had when the second chain broke.

I know the Gold 530 X-Ring Chain 122 Links with connecting Master Link motorcycle chain is one of the strongest chains you can buy. Just food for thought!
I'd say that split sprocket is wobbling at the spits and catching the chain in it and breaking it.should try a solid one and see if that works.😊.
That's where I would start
My thought would be the split sprocket expanding away under the centrifugal load, putting a bigger gap at the joints and stretching the links under load.

You guys keep going no matter what the salt throws at you. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Keep your chins up Boys! Y’all are there for the first time. Sensation overload. Guess what? This is what you guys do best!! Get parts and fix these things! You’re in your element now!! Do your thing like you do, get out there and run that thing and give it hell!! GodSpeed…
God Bless you all fellas!! You’re gonna do it!! We’re all pulling for you man!!🤘🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Loved seeing Dad again!
The trial and error is the very essence of racing, just like the 670 dragster, and it makes really good content. Believe me when I say that we all are sharing the frustration and the triumphs right there with the rest of the team. You just didn't have room for all of us in the station wagon.
This Old Man from Washington NC enjoying with my coffee late night ☕☕. So glad to see Doc helping and what a way to start retirement 👍. Really going to miss my appointment every October with him😭. John we spend most of the time during the appt talking about you and Ike🤣. Looking forward to Wednesday and the second part 😍. Love You Guys. 🛵🧔💝💝
News flash, John. Lord willing I'll see you in Oct. My retirement will consist of working Tues, Wed, and Thursday. Too many years of my life invested to just drop it all. As you know I love the people contact and the work.
@@johninzerillo1510 Doc just checked and it's Monday, December 16. I'll be calling getting it changed 👍. I know you are really enjoying hanging out and helping John and Ike❤️. I'm always checking to see if Ike is at his shop. Love stopping by and talking to him. Going to be another HEART added to my signoff for you. Love You Guys. 🛵🧔💝💝💝
@@JohnHill-jm7tm so kind of you to add a heart for me!!
I say cheer up guys, just be thankful to where you are at this moment, tomorrow is another day, it will all work out 😊❤
Chain harmonics. All chains have a wave while running. Think bull whip! When the harmonic has to abruptly stop to go around the sprocket that’s the end of the bull whip. POW massive force. Cmon guys my name is on that bike lol.
Dont forget...you arent just breaking stuff....you are breaking stuff AT BONNEVILLE!! That is a major accomplishment in itself. Keep pushing, ill keep watching.
looks like so much fun boys. I have a great story of traveling through Utah in a U-Haul
John, your dad is awesome. Great spending time together. 😊😊😊😊😊
Glad everyone stayed safe. Have fun, keep those wheels on the grounds fellas.
Disappointment leads to innovations. Ones loss is another's gain in knowledge. You both did a tremendous service to all, young and old, demonstrating the tenacity to make it right. Peace and love to all...CC and Go Power Sports. Inspirations makes for better and stronger bonds. DVD:)
Thus the joy of custom build and racing... a very smart person once said don't give up you can do it, lol..
Dad is a keeper hope to see more of him on the channel lending his knowledge
Welcome to my neck of the woods or I should say desert. Yes the desert has its own personality much like many feel in Hawaii and the volcanos. I love this desert but its a harsh place
Solid sprocket and a 420 chain for the HP and you'll be golden ✨️.
First time I've seen why this place is popular with some. All the other like minded racers, drivers, designers all in one place at the same time. It looks like a fun experience even for us that don't do it but like it. IKE GOT TO TEST A MINI BIKE THAT HIM AND HIS FRIENDS BUILT AND DROVE ON THE SALT FLATS!! That's got to be awesome
Love you taking your dad with you John
Good to be out there though the conditions are harsh. Very proud of John and the team!
Toss the split sprocket and go solid or tack weld the two halves together, and some beefier chain.
Never seen you guys so beat, but don't give up. Seen plenty of constructive feedback here take note and reassemble to come back stronger.
Great stuff and awesome challenge. Easy isn't worth squat.
🏁🏁🏁😂🤣🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🤣Ya All Rock!!!! Im a Bonneville longtimer. Seen and understand it All. Wished i would have made it this Summer. Happy Birthday Ike, fully initiated👍👍🔧🛠️🔧🛠️Dehydrated, aching, burnt, the sun reflection ,the wind, storms, LOL. Thats the Bonneville way. So glad to see Pops made it, this experience will last a Lifetime. My Pops went with me in 2011 , it was Epic, he passed in 2021, but my pics amd memories still make me smile. Proud of you all, a Valiant effort, cling to the experience...... So Few Racers and Enthusiasts ever experience what you all have.
Hallowed Ground the Salt. Yoo may try a Gates Belt drive... they are vicious. Be blessed ya all🙏🙏🙏🏁🏁🏁🇺🇸🇺🇸
Best thing I have to say get a book and write everything in the book ,from parts you didn’t bring to how many passes to the time you started you run ,to setting on the carb and the time of day you made your pass
Bonneville is a fickle place for sure. You guys are doing great! That's racing, you'll get it de-bugged, I'm sure. What a problem...TOO MUCH power. There's some that would kill for that problem. Hang in, have fun. I see Ike's still breaking stuff 😁
that long chain whipping about will put some big load spikes in, maybe add some rubbing strips to limit how far it can move? Side panels off and film what's going on.
So far you are safe, and you are learning. Keep racing boys!
Been to Bonneville once in 90, what a place and still everyone is open and really nice, just laid back atmosphere. We had a fueling problem on our drag car spoke to 1 guy and it solved our problem 1st time kut😊
Hang in there guys when you think about all the trouble Burt Muntoe had this is just a minor set back love the content and look forward to another video
Harley has been running Kevlar belts for over 50 years without any breaking. My 2003 Super glide had over 60,000 miles on it over 10 years, and it produced 80 ft pounds of torque. I never changed a belt.
Mini bikes at the salt flats, you guys are serious dorks LOL
Chain needs to be saturated in oil before use. Due to heat friction on chain will cause stretching and breaking. To help prevent chain snapping gradually flow throttle til max speed don’t save throttle till the end get it going and keep throttle rotating don’t let off. By doing this will keep chain at full tension and allow your ride to keep pulling to maximum speed. Once you let off throttle the chain will buckle and stretching happens faster. Keep throttle rolling till it’s maxed. No let offs
Our Boys ...Hitting the Big Time 👍🏼
Your motor builder needs that . To show the proof of his mighty little machine's 🎉🎉🎉🎉.
This is one reason thumpers use cush drives on the rear wheel. Tames the impulse from the single cylinder and uses it more efficiently over the entire stroke.
Looks like a great time guys 👍👍
Don't run GPS crappie parts would be a good start. Somebody gonna get killed for the sponsorship $.
its called finding the weakest link for a reason... Dont get frustrated just get better...great job guys!!
Ike and John you may need to use a jack shaft with a rear set up with a 415 chain like a jr dragster also best of luck to you guys
Oh man the struggle is real!!! You keep plugging away at it and you will get there. I understand the frustration that Ike had when the second chain broke.
Nice, been waiting a long time for this upload!! --🚦🏍💨 Giver hell boy’s!!
sacrifices to the gods of speed at Bonneville, shes a ripper boys
my birthday is this saturday .u guys went fast with the bike
wooohoooo! superman that rig!
Glad you got the salt gremlins behind you and things got better. By the way, I'm the orange ranger that got ya back to the pit, we didn't do near as well as we'd liked but every time you go it's a learning experience, see ya next year
🏆 John is wearing the best sun hat 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 ! I know because I have one just like it 🏆
I know the Gold 530 X-Ring Chain 122 Links with connecting Master Link motorcycle chain is one of the strongest chains you can buy. Just food for thought!
Centrifugal force goi
going around the sprockets
nice one guys. cant wait for pt.2
