  • I make card and scrapbooking videos and because you mostly see my hands, I love a classic French manicure on short nails. In this video, I'll share my DIY French manicure process which relies on some basic Olive & June tools and a little time and patience. I promise it's not too fancy. Just like me.
    ⭐️ NOTES & TIPS ⭐️ One thing I failed to show in the video: Cuticle Serum. When the mani is done and dry, I swipe on a bit of the Olive & June serum for a finishing touch. My other hot tip to keep the mani going? Top Coat every few days and specifically, I add a fresh top coat on Day 2. Sounds like overkill but it's not. When I filmed the intro for this, I was four days out from filming the mani. Top coating extends manis.

    I love a French mani. Been doing them myself for a few months now. I like how it always looks classy and goes with any outfit. Plus if I’m busy (or let’s be real lazy) it’s not super noticeable if they grow out or are a little chipped here and there, and I can often extend the life with a quick dry top coat.

    Very complete manicure! If in time you start finding your fingernails splitting straight down. That is from arthritis. The fingernail forms in front of the cuticle. So for me I have arthritis in my fingertips. My first recommendation would be to try gel nails. Those are pretty easy to do at home. The polish you will have to look for---probably online. When that no longer works it then becomes necessary to go with acrylic nails. Those, I haven't mastered! Thank you for being real. For sharing what gives you joy--and just might give us joy too.

    Thank you so much for this video! I usually just have my nails done for big events, but this fall I'll be making videos for my hybrid students and those choosing to learn online. Well, I looked at my nails and panicked! I didn't want to go to the salon and spend a lot of money and risk Covid. Your video pointed me in the right direction and gave me the confidence that I can do this at home. My order has been placed, I'm excited there are video to show how to take care of my nails and the cost was very reasonable. You're the best...thanks!

      And the polish is WONDERFUL. You know how (and maybe this is just me) but sometimes, with regular brands, my nails hurt after taking off the polish. I think its the formaldehyde or whatever the bad stuff is in regular polish? Anyway, O&J is vegan and cruelty free and I have NEVER experienced that after taking off their polish. Good stuff!

    As you said practice makes perfect, but you really did a great job! I love that little clean up brush. I am horrible at painting my nails so normally I don't but I love the French manicure look. When I do paint them I just slept polish on all over the place and after it dries really well then wash my hands in hot water or take a shower and all the Polish just peels off the skin really easy. I'm sure that's horrible for my cuticles though. Many years ago I got a French manicure kit that sort of had like masking paper stickers so you could paint the white part.

    • @czdesign

    Whelp, I just bought the complete system from O&J. Cannot wait to take matters into my own ‘hands’ with my mani/pedis lol. Cathy I just adore you! I watch your videos so often my husband has nicknamed you, “Zil”. I grew up in Everett too!! My close friend who also grew up in Everett teases me whenever I say, “I grew up in Everett” because I went to Jackson HS and according to her (who went to Everett HS) - no one who went to Jackson High School in Mill Creek can claim to be, “from Everett”. Her and I have an ongoing, playful row about it. But my home address WAS EVERETT! She once said to me, “I don’t know anyone who TRIES to say they are from Everett” lol. If you’re from Everett you get that! Still, despite it’s misgivings I LOVE the town, in fact, my husband and I take our 2 and 3 year olds on a “snooze-cruise” every night and we almost always drive to Grande in Everett to look at the beautiful old houses. Keep doing what you do, all of it, you’re endearing and charming and inspiring and a master at simple yet beautiful cards...not an easy feat!

    I do my nails in reverse order. Clear base coat, 2 coats of sheer pink, then 2 coats of white, then the top coat. I'm going to try your method, but first, I need that brush. Thanks for the video.

    French mani is always classy, I think. Never heard of it being referred to as tacky, that’s crazy. I may have to try this! Most of the time my nails just have clear polish because I’m lazy😂. And I work in healthcare and nitrile gloves are the enemy of manicures. I used to do the variation where the white isn’t opaque but semitransparent (I forget what it was called) because it was more forgiving. My nails are longer so it might be trickier, but I just might try this. Thanks for sharing!

    I’m a nail tech. I love your nail tips, your nails always look great 👍🏻. My top tip for a neat french mani is use a dotting tool to draw the white tip then fill in with the brush. No clean up needed.

    Hey, Thanks for the tip! haha, get it? Tip, nail tip? Yes, your humor is rubbing off on me! But seriously, great tips, trim and file with polish on, straight edge clippers, buffing the cuticles, dont wash your nails after buffing (every nail salon I have ever had my nails done at, have all sent me to the sink!) dehydrate the nails, that makes so much sense. I will look up Olive and June Thanks.

      Yes! No base coat with olive & june polish. They have a base coat formulation IN every polish. I only use it with their darker colors just for easy removal but they do not even make one.

    Cathy, you are so funny on your videos. I was wondering about this but being able to do things at home instead of going to a salon is appealing to me so I thought I would check out what you had to show. I'm so glad I watched. I learned so much! A question for you though, about how long does your manicure last? When I do my nails, sometimes within a day or two it starts chipping off. It may be my process, I learned things I never heard of from your video, or it may be my products. Okay, another question. Do you find that the Olive & June topcoats really hardens your nails? My nails snapped off at the slightest bump against anything and I, too, keep my nails fairly short. I'm anxious to hear your reply as I've been really debating about breaking down and going to a salon for some type of gel work. I really dread getting hooked on having the weekly or bi-weekly refill process.

    • @czdesign
      @czdesign  3 роки тому

      So I'm on day 6 of my most recent. The key is top coating. And I probably do it every other day after I do it on day one and then day two. I keep my nails pretty short too. I don't know if O&J hardens my nails, but it's a great seal on the polish, if that makes sense!

    I'm not alone anymore look at all you middle aged vampire fans. OMG I have been doing my nails all wrong all these years why has no one told me not to wash my hands after taking off the old polish. I am going to try this technique

    • @czdesign
      @czdesign  4 роки тому +1

      Yes to middle aged vampire fans and yes to not washing. I never knew that. In fact, I did post a video about a year ago showing my basic routine and was still washing my hands. But since i stopped doing that, the manis last longer. Plus, Olive & June is great polish.
      Have you ever had that thing when you take off your polish and your nails kind of hurt? I used to experience that a ton, but not with O&J. I think because it's a formula free of the nasty stuff.

    • @czdesign
      @czdesign  4 роки тому

      I have had that happen, too. And part of me wonders is it because I used to make sure I washed my hands after nail prep. Which I have learned from the O&J folks, not to do. Because the few times I have gone to a salon, they always have me wash my hands before nail painting, and it has happened occasionally there, too.
      Give the whole prep your nails, then clean them off with remover, and try that.
