Crazy story, thanks for sharing. Not sure what your "5g carbs" dose is, but something interesting I saw in a team novonordisk video is that they never treat with more than 0.5U of insulin during a race, and see how that affects blood sugars.
Highly informative thank you!
One thing I've learned. T1's can eat the exact same meal, weigh exactly the same, and take the exact same units of insulin. It will effect us all different. You might still be high, I might be stable. Someone might crash. Body chemistry, stress, blood pressure, hydrated. So many things to consider
I’ve found that I have to turn on the activity function on my insulin pump before I bolus for lunch at work because of how active my job requires me to be. This will work most times but there are times where even the reduced lunchtime bolus is too much and I have to eat an extra 20 grams of carbs without taking any insulin to avoid going low. And even then there are some times where that extra 20 carbs doesn’t kick in fast enough and I’ll end up in the 50s for like 20 minutes before I see any results. Happened like that yesterday.
When I start exercising or doing any vigorous sport, my BG will go up due to my body reacting to the stress and or strenuous work I'm doing. I make myself get at 200 before exercising. After 15 minutes or so it will stop reacting to stress and it will start declining. I do NOT give myself insulin at 200 AND also go exercise. I need to be at 200 to go bike riding around my neighborhood or at the beach. I ignore the high for 15 minutes and then I look at look at my phone and there it goes, it starts dropping. By the time I get to 110, I need stop for more gas, meaning I need more carbs.
Very interesting stuff isn't it! I noticed something similar for a while - though for me it was a delay in my food digesting that hit me at the beginning, and then the ride would bring it back down as well. It's a tricky puzzle, this diabetes stuff haha
All these formulas only work if you do not have a menstrual cycle ... I dealt with that all my life. Now that i take hormones to surpress it, my bg became finally predictable (with considering all the other variables). Very sympathetic with my old self
Great video!
Pushing the limits so we can more safely...
Thankyou indeed...
Out of interest...only if its something you care to share...what is your Hb A1c out of curiosity?
Glad you enjoyed it! Happy to share the wins (and fails) and my lessons along the way. My current A1C is a 5.9 without constant lows (and important distinction in my mind)
Superb!..With all that hard-core exercise!..an inspiration! Thankyou again.
Hi Matt. I sent an email to you yesterday. We need help in managing my niece's blood sugar .
I responded to it, but if you can't find it - please send another email to team@ftfwarrior.com and we'll try again. Happy to help if I can.
This was interesting and scary Matt! However, its a very specific example that may only apply to people that do that kind of extreme exercise. I personally only do yoga and pilates and that's my happy place. However, if I were hiking through a mountain I would probably have waited to go down to civilization BEFORE taking any extra insulin, even taking a small dose seems a risk when you are alone in the wilderness, right?
I appreciate your concern! and YES absolutely. I did make it to the bottom of the trail (near the place where you buy tickets) so that IF things went badly, I could get to help if needed. Great idea!
