Just discovered all your vids. I'm a chef who has been repeatedly asked for photos of my food which is not my skill set but you've made it understandable & doable. Thank you so much.
Another thing I found fun to do, is to paint a dark undercoat color under the main color. I then use 180 grit to open up some spaces to the under color and wood adding a 3rd color dimension to the board.
Great video and fun backgrounds, I hope you don't mind me adding some pro tips, as a long time woodworker, I only offer these tips to help folks succeed, and it's not a slight about your videos. Humidity is the enemy of wood, so depending on where you live in the country, it may or may not be an issue, but it's best to do the following to insure your boards stay straight and sound- 1. When you glue boards together like this, pay attention to where the natural tree rings curve by looking at the ends of the boards. Alternate the curves, so one goes up and the next goes down. That will prevent 'cupping' which happens when all the curves are in the same direction, the wood will naturally start bowing 2. Use a primer on all sides and ALL edges. If you neglect to prime/paint edges or the back, moisture will seep in through that side and will contribute to warping Here are more general tips: 1. When gluing boards together, you can wipe off the excess glue with a damp/slightly wet paper towel after you've clamped the boards 2. Be mindful that using oil-based paint and water-based (acrylic or latex) paint together can be problematic. You can use oil-based over water-based paint, but not water-based over oil-based, it won't adhere properly. One way to introduce patches of color is to use your pop color as an undercoat, let it dry, then paint your base color on top, let it dry and then distress the base color and the pop color will show through 3. Seal all sides and edges with a clear matte sealer (comes in a spray can). That way if you spill oils or food on it, it won't stain or ruin your surface and will be much more durable.
I LOVE this and I find making styling boards addicting. I typically spray the finished board with matte clear spray just for further protection. Thank you so much! You two are THE cutest! Now I will share with my craft hubs too! (He'll be so excited for another project LOL)
So Joanie, did you notice there is no guard on Ryan's radial arm saw (among the most dangerous of power saws), no eye protection or ear protection. By the way, thanks for your channel. It has been really helpful and enjoyable! Hope Ryan stays safe!
Ohhhh, the charred wood. Very nice. I love dark stuff like that. I use my sander but I like the wire brush idea. I didn't think of that, thanks. Yes, that glue is hellastrong. This is the same way I made my writing/drawing desk. Thanks for the idea on the wire brush and both the gray and the blue are stunning.
I literally laughed out loud when Ryan went full on Vanna White with the wire brush! 😂 Now I’ve got a fun weekend project to work on. Thanks for sharing!
Wow !!! He did an amazing job, look great that backdrop. Hey he's so handy. You both guys really had a lot of fun. Thank for sharing good ideas. It's time to work on it. Big hugs ! Stay out of trouble, i will 😄😄
Amazing :) I made and made a UA-cam video of my own wood background a few weeks ago made out of wood pallets and it’s honestly one of my favourites right now :) I did it more dark wood 😂
@@TheBiteShot yeah! we got some gym equipment delivered on it and there was no way I was throwing those away 😂 DIY gold delivered to my door :) I love yours though, definitely think I’ll be making some more wood backgrounds soon 😂 🤦🏼♀️ it’s all so addictive.
Such great tips! Looks like the two of you had way too much fun with this ;P Both sides are beautiful and I'm running to get my hands on that charcoal finish immediately!
I really relate to that moment when you see the backdrop in photos and u just lovvveee it 😍 I have an old piece of wood who has been in the sun for years so it’s pretty aged. I painted one side with brown stain to see the beauty of wood, but now I can’t decide to paint the other side with white color or black stain like yours 🤔
I came here to say the same thing! On the end of each of the boards the grain will curve into a half circleish shape, when you are done it should look like a squiggly line going across the board. It helps to not only keep it from curving while putting it together but also as the board is exposed it will expand and contract so this helps it to keep its shape.
Thomas, I'm lost in translation, what do you mean? Put the boards together in diff direction? (that's what I think I understood) I'm going to make mine. Thanks in advance
@@TheBiteShot I feel that! my partner does so much for my work at instagram.com/stevieshootsfood and she barely gets her hand in a shot in a blue moon. Big up the partners!!
I had some really old hardwood fence palings. Boy they were dilapidated and that made them even better. They sorta had little worm squigles through them. I love it so much. I want to find some more palings so I can make some more but I don't think any others will be as good as this one. I am going to make a nice grungy grey one though like yours.
thanks for the great tips . i am just wondering how long that glue will hold these boards. any tips on how to handle / store these boards? should they be placed on top of each other or placed along a wall? how do you store them?
I'm going to get a canvas drop cloth and paint it, cut up a stack of old hay pallets to do something like this AND this! I am starting a portrait business and I want a variety.
It also helps to leave the boards in dry place for drying. Just in case. Otherwise, if there was some moisture in them from the supplier simply because they weren't kept properly...u-u-u, you may have to face some disappointment after you've glued them together.
When you go to a lumber yard or wooden board areas of Lowe's or Home Depot, most boards you will find have smooth sides. If you would like wood with "character", look for what is called "rough cut" wood. You can find rough cut wood at Lowes or Home Depot in their cedar fencing departments. When I go to my local Home Depot store, they stock 6 foot long cedar fence boards. I go through the stack to find boards that are not cracked, broken or warped. I also don't want ones that have large knot holes. After I select the ones I want, I take advantage of their "one cut free" offer and have the boards cut into four foot lengths. Why? The back seat of my car will accept four foot lengths of wood when I'm going out on location. These cedar boards can be sanded, stained, painted, assembled into surfaces by nailing together. Be creative and have fun. Terry Thomas... the photographer Atlanta, Georgia USA
Joni, thank you for your inspiring videos. However, not all of us have a wonderful workshop like your husband's. So, I'm not sure to call these cheap DIY backgrounds. I'm quite good at DIY jobs but I couldn't make these myself as my town would charge a lot of money for custom-cut wood.
I also was shocked when I saw it. It's very dangerous because there is no protection and your hand is very close to the blade. I think that saw is handmade. But otherwise I liked the video a lot, so thanks for it!
I am surprised your husband still has his fingers and arm after seeing the radial arm saw of his. No blade guard, the stand as wobbly as an old man with a cane. Spinning blades create static electricity which attract hair and clothing. A persons arm or hand can be pulled into the spinning blade before they have time to react.
Interesting, making something nice and then beating it up. I know you got kids, maybe put it in the yard and let them at it with rocks, skateboards, whatever kids can be clever at destructive methods. But then again, why let them have all the fun.

I'm a big fan of using Pergo Flooring. Lots of choices and easy to use.
I like the different video styles you added to the video. The added goofiness made the video more entertaining.
Oh my gosh! My husband is a carpenter. Now I'm going to be hounding him to make me some boards!! Thanks Joanie, these are absolutely gorgeous!!!
Oh yes!!! That makes it so easy!! Have fun!!!
I just got back from my local Lowes where they had ready made glued up 2x3' panels like this for $23, ready for paint and distressing.
Another thing I found fun to do, is to paint a dark undercoat color under the main color. I then use 180 grit to open up some spaces to the under color and wood adding a 3rd color dimension to the board.
That blue was a great choice!! Awesome shot!!
Thank you! Really had fun with it. Can't wait to shoot with it again.
These came out gorgeous!
Brilliant! Your family's creativity is endless! Thanks for sharing with all of us!
That video was so much fun to watch, with your dog and husband making it extra entertaining! Bring them back more often :)
You bet :) They always crack me up. And fortunately Bruce got to take the cone off this week. Poor fella!
Yes yes.. thank you for posting this!!

Hello, great video DIY ... i will try soon !
These are nice for flat lays, but what do you use when shooting the 45 degree angle shots?

Alternate the end grain of each board to prevent the boards from curving. Learned from experience

Hiii, got a question, if I apply a Matte wood varnish, does it makes any shiny reflection on the photographs? Have you tried this?

2ft by 3ft is my preferred sizing

Wooden backdrops are great. But should be in different colors, to keep the vibe changing in every vid. Thanks a lot for the video.
