My dad owned Cajun Way Swamp Tour on the West Pearl River we brought bus loads of tourists past the Irish Bayou Castle everyday most of them were fascinated by it. My father in-law built the original kitchen cabinets for it. It sold about 10 years ago for around $100k it has become a landmark the last 40 years.
3:30 There is in fact a historical marker for the Harvey Castle on the corner of Destrehan Ave. and 4th St. It stands right in front of the bridge over the canal on the left hand side when travelling east.
Pretty great historical review but Freedmen *did exist, and own slaves, elsewhere as well, although I'll agree inter-racial mixture was probably more common in Louisiana than anywhere else.

I’m happy you enjoy our work! I certainly love our history.
Most of the canals in Louisiana were built by a previous civilization. Many are covered up, many deteriorated. This is true for all older cities.
I would agree if it weren’t for the oil industry. MOST canals down here are underwater oil pipelines.
excellent, im subscribed. please give us more of this fascinating but obscure local history. let me know if i may help
Thank you and welcome to the community! I’m happy you enjoy the content because much more is coming soon.
