But as a 7 year golf 7 owner bought new in 2014 the interior of the golfs got way worse. Fidely touch surfaces and lots of cheap plastics. The latter you only find down at your feet in the Mazda. Infotainment also way way better in the Mazda.
@@TheDude50447 the golf is without a doubt the better performance car. Only driven them in Denmark but did really enjoy it. The Mazda is the best commuter and cheaper to maintain at least in the states.
You mentioned on the Mazda the 6 speed manual is standard in both engines? In the US you need to get the top of the line FWD model (Premium trim) to get the manual. Wish we could get the cheaper model down here with the manual too, since when we are in the $28K range, to go a few more dollars $31K we can get the AWD turbo model which is too tempting to pass up (and that one is an automatic). I can't wait for the Honda Civic hatchback with the manual transmission.
Having not driven the new Civic, but I have seen it at the dealer, Civic for the win. Looks inside and out: Mazda by a mile. Roominess and airy cabin and heated rears for the kiddos: big win for the Honda. Most importantly for me, Mazda 3 MT drives a little too cushy/boring for my tastes. As long as the MT in the Civic doesn’t have the rev hang issues of the previous gen Si and better peddle placement, my GUESS is driving dynamics/drive train will go to the Civic.
Domestics left the party, and these players are eating their lunch. Both r great. Turbos and cvts are here to stay folks. If I'd want a 4wd, sub would bey choice. Lovely comparison, into space, milage, futureproofing, is where I look
It’s crazy looking to upgrade my 2020 Hyundai Veloster. The new Civic touring tops out at $34,999 with hfp appearance package. For $35,000 you can get the new Mazda 3 gt turbo awd. Honda has priced the new Civic out of reason. A base veloster N can be purchased for $35,000, or a Volkswagen Jetta GLI can be had with dct for $33,000. Not sure where or who came up with the Honda pricing but it’s crazy!
I don't see the point to compare such cars. The Civic is a family car, not the Mazda. In other words, I'd drive the Civic with my wife while I'd drive the Mazda with my girlfriend...
The Mazda 3 becomes a compelling choice on the used market especially with the better looking interior and proper automatic transmission. Give it 2 more years and an off lease 2019 naturally aspirated 2.5 will be bought with cash. Time to save the pennies.
Unfortunately, we never got the Mazda sedan, we can only review what is available to us in the press fleet. We had some requests to do this comparison and we felt it was worth it even if we only had the hatchback.
@@andreaspencer9813 oh i do understand you can only review what you guys get,,,,and you do a super job....i was just commenting that apples to apples would be more instructive. Thanks.
Nice little debate. My personal preference, the body style of the Mazda3 is blah! I also feel that the 10th Gen Honda Civic body style is more youthful and sportier than the 11th Gen. Now the 11th Gen does appear more mature and leans toward the Accord and Toyota Camry. The cabin noise level in the Mazda3 is about 10 to 15 decibels lower than the Civic. Mom ... Dad ... that humming noise is giving me a headache! Comfort goes to the Civic, and the overall ride goes to Mazda3 which is also quieter. The Interior Design/layout goes to the Civic Touring. I do not like the slanted blended look into the dashboard of the Infotainment screen of the Mazda3 or its outdated Instrument Cluster. The Civic Touring has a full 10-inch Instrument Cluster which is the future trend and looks very appealing. AWD is an option and for a compact/small vehicle it is not necessary, simply be better off with Winter/Snow tires than AWD on a small car. The 2022 Honda 1.5L Turbo with Vtec makes it a good engine but the issue remains about Oil Dilution. While the Mazda3 2.5L Turbo is more powerful and a bit more reliable. Mazda3 and Civic Touring each have Pros and Cons. Taking a test drive and deciding for yourself, is the only way to know which car suits you best.
I live in the u.s around the Hartford ct Springfield mass area.. and here there is almost 0% inventory on this new civic.. I have to wait 3 week’s to get the one I want! Chip shortages for sure!! Lol
The front of the Honda looks okay, the rear looks like a Jetta. The previous gen tailights were unique in the segment, cool, and recognizable. But the Mazda hands down looks better. Also, the knob is great and easy to learn.
You are unfair and biased here . CR rates Mazds way more reliable. Honda is plagued by realiability issues for years. You get it soooo wrong about CVT as well, maybe justifying your poor choice . CVT is cheap and thats all it does "well". Mazda absolutely wins here as it should for last 18 yrs ....sales numbers mean nothing . You are sooooo biased calling this Civic as better handling car 🤣 You are clearly Civic Honda fanatic so you should not approach a fair comparision here. Again no modern projector headlights on Civic that Mazda offers on all models, No cheap cheesy CVT on Mazda , better realiability on Mazda , Better engine choices on Mazda, Larger screen and knob control like in the best of BMW or Alfas ..... list goes on . Oh yes extra inch of leg room on Civic is a huge engineering acheavment. And you did lie about this infotainment being old , it is not old , it is new and has great res , speed and graphics it has better resolution of the screen and larger screen as well than Honda! Honda offers old school tech screen with smeary touch screen , no thanks. How can you be so blind and not care about your reviewer reputation?
the back seat of the 3 is it's Achilles heel. That said the problem with both these cars are the starting base price! Absolute ridiculous pricing on entry car models.
Hey Zack, if I may suggest something. I don't think your Friday video get lots of views and maybe you don't care, but maybe cancel that segment and create a new one. Maybe a dedicated video on helping people buying cars, giving tips, the what and not what to dos. Just food for thought.
@Nick R He is sort of doing that during his Q&A, when he answers certain questions. Also, I remember Zack mentioning in one of his Q&A that, if you want some one on one car buying advice, you’d have to pay for his time.
I wish the Honda hatchback came with AWD. The Mazda seems to me to have a major blindspot. Is poor visibility a problem? I do not like to rely on cameras/monitors...
in canada, GX 2.0 > GS 2.5 > GT optional turbo, i would go with the GS, it's the least expensive model that comes with the 2.5, and i would add AWD. I live in canada where winter is about 4-5months, with a lot of snow, i currently drive a fwd with mandatory snow tires (by law), getting a AWD would just be ideal, unfortunately none of the competitor in the same price range offers it other than the suburu.

The problem with Mazda is thier interior space efficiency is horrible. Sit in a Mazda 3 and it's like sitting in a coffin, the Honda is so much more spacious. This applies to the whole Mazda line.
Yeah Mazda needs to really rework their interior ergonomics. They all have huge hoods and very cramped interior space/small trunks. I wish Mazda would look at Honda and take some notes on how to make open and spacious interiors. Then replace that ancient and slow 6 speed auto and improve infotainment tech.
You guys seem to be trying way too hard to sell the Honda . Having completely lost 2 engines in Hondas . The first one was just a lack of knowledge of Honda's tendency to completely grenade if the timing belt goes . The second time was my girlfriend's car . She was 4k past warranty which the dealer never had a notification on service intervals . So 4k out of warranty KA-BOOM . Engine gone and Honda says that'll be 6100 dollars please. The Mazda has a timing chain and so does Toyota. Honda has used up my good will lol. I think it's ugly as hell anyway.
The US is the only country in the world to pronounce Mazda it’s own way. The rest of the world pronounces it properly, as both these presenters say it! Mazda FTW!
I'm leaning towards the new Civic. I'm disappointed Mazda dulled the steering and responsiveness and ditched the independent rear suspension in the current 3. Combine that with the tight interior and inferior infotainment system and it has too many significant flaws. In true Honda fashion, the new Civic is really solid all around, with no significant flaws. The interior is simple and straightforward yet is high quality for the class, it has a more up to date infotainment system, the ride and handling are class leading, it has great interior packaging and has good cargo capacity for the class. The only demerit point for the Civic is that the exterior design is pretty bland and anonymous, but should age well.
have you test driven the latest 3? I did and the torsion beam rear suspension in it is hands down better than the old independant. Seems like it's better tuned than the old one was

Doyou remember the big snow storm in 2019 or was it 2020? people couldnt even go up a small slope and had to push their car because they didnt bother getting winter tires. While my friend's AWD audi with everyday tires just slowly drives away.
I know that looks are not everything but... I really do not like the look of the 2022 Civic. The front end is just bland. It's kind of retro. If Honda is going to do Retro I wish that they would copy the late 90's Civic coupe.
I would consider a mazda when they start building them to fit large people, yet I fit in a civic, mazda needs to kick their design people in the @ss to design their vehicles to fit very large to small people if they want to improve sales.
Well although Mazda 3 is direct competitor to Honda Civic, Mazda stay true to its identity as a compact car while people will be hard pressed to call newer Civics compact. Maybe consider their bigger cars?
The new Civic very much looks like a 2012 Hyundai Sonata which was considered by auto journalists as an adult improvement over the 2011. That side profile, the straight line from front to rear and those taillights are a smart copy of the Sonata.
Don't get me wrong that Mazda has a bit more versatility with different trims and powertrain options. However, Honda is known for better reliability and is more of an engineering company. The Civic looks very upscale and the interior as well as the infotainment system is top of the line in compact class. If I were in the market for a vehicle now, I would purchase the Civic Sedan Touring. Honda keeps improving the Civic which each new generation. I like technology and a company that is design conscious. Honda still makes one of the best vehicles to date.
I like the inside of Mazda 3 more upscale and luxury. I hate the honeycomb of the Civic looks like 60's. Besides that, Civic wins everything. Size, comfort, independent rear suspension, resale value etc. However, I will choose the 2 liter model over turbo which is more reliable and cheaper. The base price of Civic is quite high and the first time buyer might find another cheaper and more reliable alternative.
Mazda3 tech is dated and not intuitive. That's a deal breaker for me. For most families and small car buyers, the 2022 Civic checks more boxes. Though Mazda3's interior consists of premium materials, I felt cramped in it as compared to the spacious interior of the Civic. Honda has a winner in this 11th generation car.
The Mazda 3 is more stylish and sporty looking than the Civic. Not sure why it's fuel economy is so much worse especially with its fuel saving Sky-Activ technology.
Great comparison, now that the base price of the Civic has climbed to $25k before taxes the Mazda 3 becomes a compelling choice. The 3 sedan is very elegant and has an upscale presence.

But for city driving or autobahn I preferred especially the golf which got a more comfortable suspension setting I feel. It's also not far behind the Mazda on said country roads.
It's ugly seriously the Honda. The Mazda 3 just looks cool
👍👍
Thanks for the great video! I would love to see a comparison of these vehicles to the KIA Forte 5 GT.
Both of you do a great job. Thank you
The Mazda3 already got World Car of the year
Having not driven the new Civic, but I have seen it at the dealer, Civic for the win.
I’ll bet you any amount of money it will still rev hang lol
Domestics left the party, and these players are eating their lunch. Both r great. Turbos and cvts are here to stay folks. If I'd want a 4wd, sub would bey choice. Lovely comparison, into space, milage, futureproofing, is where I look
Thanks God, Mazda is not equipped with CVT.
The Mazda 3 hands down. The civic looks like an smaller version of the accord.aka Accord jr
Nothing wrong with looking like a mini accord.
I don't thing they are in the same segment anymore the Civic is too big
Great review!!
Mazda makes cars for car enthusiasts while honda and Toyota make cars for buyers, the figures says it all.
The Mazda 3 becomes a compelling choice on the used market especially with the better looking interior and proper automatic transmission. Give it 2 more years and an off lease 2019 naturally aspirated 2.5 will be bought with cash. Time to save the pennies.
I really like tour comparos, but in this instance should it not have been sedan to sedan and not sedan to hatch?
Unfortunately, we never got the Mazda sedan, we can only review what is available to us in the press fleet. We had some requests to do this comparison and we felt it was worth it even if we only had the hatchback.
@@andreaspencer9813 oh i do understand you can only review what you guys get,,,,and you do a super job....i was just commenting that apples to apples would be more instructive. Thanks.
@@sgrant9814 I couldn't agree more but I think it was still worth it. Thanks for watching!
What's about skyactiv x 2.0 l ?
Honda civics are good, but why would you buy a civic instead of mazda3? Mazda hands down is the only choice to pick.
Lol, because Honda makes the best cars (with Toyota), not even close.
3GT with 6 speed manual. Boom.
🇨🇦
What is up with Honda wanting to keep old school hubcaps on it's base trim? Alloy's should come standard on all trims like most other compact cars do.
Oooo 😯 0:40 that Civic Hatchback looks very nice
Mazda is more upscale
Civic: CVT, no BSA, no memory seats. Mazda: naturally aspirated, 6-speed automatic, BSA and memory seats. No comparison.
Both are great values and good quality cars.
Great video! Can you review the Hyundai Elantra 2022?
There is a review from 2021,same car
Love watching your videos, great job! Btw the Honda 1.5 turbo is not deluded but might be diluted.
But it is delusional
I've yet to see the new Civic on the streets. That's a bit unusual in Vancouver, usually somebody jumps on being first. Wonder what supply is like.
I live in vancouver too and I've seen 2 new civics the past 2 days haha
I live in the u.s around the Hartford ct Springfield mass area.. and here there is almost 0% inventory on this new civic.. I have to wait 3 week’s to get the one I want! Chip shortages for sure!! Lol
HONDA Hobos Opening Nasty Doors Again
Awesome video. Both vehicles are the good vehicles. 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it.
@@andreaspencer9813 You are an very welcome! 👍🏻👊🏻
Honda design looks booooring, Mazda wins!
agreed
Agree but maybe Honda is trying to move away from the civic's racer boy image.
You are sooooo biased calling this Civic as better handling car 🤣
You are clearly Civic Honda fanatic so you should not approach a fair comparision here.
Yes, this is why blind spot monitoring is standard in Mazda
I would not buy the 1.5 turbo in the Civic . The standard engine will be more reliable .
Still driving my 2001 Accord 6 cylinder EX.
in canada, GX 2.0 > GS 2.5 > GT optional turbo, i would go with the GS, it's the least expensive model that comes with the 2.5, and i would add AWD.
I live in canada where winter is about 4-5months, with a lot of snow, i currently drive a fwd with mandatory snow tires (by law), getting a AWD would just be ideal, unfortunately none of the competitor in the same price range offers it other than the suburu.
I've been looking at the Civic for some time and I wouldn't buy it because of the looks! This one is a totally different look which is not "Boy Racer" which I am seriously interested in,
civic is a mini accord now, best
Mazda 3 is way better, the rivals are German and not Japanese like Civic
😂 I love 💕 the intro with the American translation of MAZDA, Americans are very special and always deserve an explanation of why is different than what the American way. 😂 civic looks like an old Audi A4 looking at the back, civic has no personality, Mazda have an unique design inside and outside Mazda 3 it’s very elegant civic is not

English is the official language of the U.S, not American. What reason would I have to learn your third world native language? All important world conversations are conducted in English which is why you're obviously struggling to master it. I'm fine not speaking whatever language your native country speaks.
C'mon Honda. No lumbar support?
Awd is great, until one of those tires is damaged and you have to replace all 4 tires.
both nice but hate the ipad look, rather have it in the dash. Electronic parking brake is another thing that is a waste.
Actually, it's pronounced: MAH-TSU-DAH.
The company's real name is Matsuda.
@@janoycresnova9156 i will take that 6 speed any day over a cvt.
*why does the host keep saying "Mazda Mazda" twice everytime he talks about the Mazda lol...*
Because he's making fun of Americans who think he's pronouncing Mazda incorrectly. In Canada we know how to speak English..lol.
@@5150SP in my country, the way Canadians pronounce Mazda is the same, I guess only the Imperial Americans are different.
Sorry to hear you have had so much trouble with your Honda. We haven't had any trouble with ours at all.
The US is the only country in the world to pronounce Mazda it’s own way. The rest of the world pronounces it properly, as both these presenters say it! Mazda FTW!
Honda Is better in every way
New Honda Civic hatchback builds on almost 50 years of the nameplate with e:HEV electrified drivetrain.
Manual all the way!
I would of gotten the Mazda if it wasn't for that horrible C-pillar and small boot. Hopefully Mazda can fix that in the next generation.
Seems like it's better tuned than the old one was
I live in Seattle and say “Maaaz-da”. There’s no rule that specifies pronunciation.
Who decided the pronunciation for the Sportage?! Do all words with the suffix “-age” get that sexy zh (as in “rouge”)
throw on winter tires on FWD... you live in the same city i am in.. Do you see anyone with FWD "putting on" winter tires? Doyou remember the big snow storm in 2019 or was it 2020? people couldnt even go up a small slope and had to push their car because they didnt bother getting winter tires. While my friend's AWD audi with everyday tires just slowly drives away.
Gotta love the new Civic
I know that looks are not everything but... I really do not like the look of the 2022 Civic. The front end is just bland. It's kind of retro. If Honda is going to do Retro I wish that they would copy the late 90's Civic coupe.
It's "Matsuda". Come on people.
And in German it's Matz-Da!
Most civics I see on the road are LXs and the Sports trims I don’t think many people bought the base DX trim its pretty basic no AC or Apple CarPlay
They don't make a civic without air conditioning
Ofcourse Mazda is better. Civic has not reliable engine, and CVT. This is enough for me to choose mazda.
This is just my opinion
Weather 2.0 or 1.5t, civic feels like a cheaper car without 6MT
The civic will still outsell the mazda3
That center part of that honda grill above the emblem gives it such a pignose look. Really ugly in my eyes and honestly a step backwards.
Civic loses... it looks bland and cheap
Honda civic better
Mazda3 Made in Japan
Show muito top 👌👌👌👌
The civic must look better in person because I've been thinking about how ugly this car is during every review I watch
I saw one on the road yesterday. It does look as ugly as you think it does on video.
Seriously biased for Honda aye!
The Mazda 3 is more stylish and sporty looking than the Civic. Not sure why it's fuel economy is so much worse especially with its fuel saving Sky-Activ technology.
Nice Honda homers ad - guess I won't be watching any more of your crazy!

Mazda 3 kills everything in it‘s class. Very easy. I recently drove a lot of cars. My next will be a Mazda 3 for sure 👍🏻
That new civic is one ugly car. 🥵
