You followed the sax so closely it was like hearing one of those old MIDI guitar tracking things from the 90s. Play guitar, get synth and guitar at the same time. Great job.

    How do you learn something like that? Do you start by memorising the solo by repeated listening and turn it into little part, learning each up to tempo and then stitch them together? Trying to get those saxophone and piano solos on the guitar is truly transformative.

    Most don’t realize that the fast passages by brecker are always him superimposing Countdown changes over a static point. Brecker doesn’t swing. But it’s very impressive they way you can play seemingly anything on guitar. Try Sonny stitt it’ll be easier and way better music.

    • @joshmeaderofficial
      @joshmeaderofficial  2 роки тому +1

      disagree entirely my guy, this solo rips. Stitt is a legend and have transcribed a lot of his playing.

    • @kbkesq
      @kbkesq 2 роки тому

      @@joshmeaderofficial Thanks mate for replying. well bottom line it’s amazing you can play this. Truly. When I went to Berklee in late 80’s all I wanted to do was play like Brecker on guitar. No way I could do this. But i moved to NYC and got to study with Ron Carter there and play sideman gigs and learned to appreciate that “it don’t mean a thing without that swing.” I still never got near your technique and wish I had or I wouldn’t be a lawyer now 😂 Kidding aside, recker was a great player but he doesn’t swing. His best playing is on chick corea’s Three quartets IMO and it’s been transcribed already btw but again he’s just super imposing Countdown over pedal points largely. Or doing the Coltrane Interstellar Space wailing away like Coltrane did in the 60’s. He really doesn’t swing. It’s dark music. I just say Sonny Stitt because he’s so happy in his playing- the world is crazy enough and we don’t need these nihilistic jazz solos do we?. I’d love to hear you do whatever you think is Sonny’s best most challenging and also uplifting solo- that would be amazing . (I’ll do a patreon contribution for sure). And of course the goal is eventually to have it come out in your playing. Would love to hear you with backing track or band where all this impossible sound material comes through. Keep up the hard work- you’re definitely amazing mate! 🤙

    • @kbkesq
      @kbkesq 2 роки тому

      @@joshmeaderofficial and I edited my comment to be Less critical of brecker. My concern about so many guitarists/jazz players coming up is this emphasis on playing out, not sounding “old” and swinging. On guitar we hear holdsworth coming back in vogue but the guy literally had no swinging rhythmic drive. George benson when he’s on (check out his studio solo on Little Train) , joe pass on night and day, Wes Montgomery- those are the greatest examples of swinging guitar that is also technically impressive. We have to be aware of what is being pushed and why. We must always stave off nihilism in the world and it has no place in our music. All the best!

    It's interesting how suddenly this solo takes a very different meaning when I see it played on the guitar... It's like my brain makes more sense of it through the guitar, I can follow the story more easily. Weird... Maybe jazz guitar player shouldn't waste anymore time transcribing Metheny, Stern or Hall and focus on wind instruments improvisations instead?

    • @omgtkseth
      @omgtkseth 3 роки тому +4

      Yes. It's like their phrasing language and sense of creativity is from another world. When I look for guitar covers of my favorite sax solos, I will often think that the solos are hard to follow or ground on scales and patterns. Once I see them in the guitar, I notice 2 things: a) insane phrasing that guitarists simply don't come up with, perhaps because the fingering isn't natural, and b) really "silly and dumb" stuff that no guitarist would do because it's not cool among guitarists, but that sounded free, expressive, groovy on the sax (e.g., 0:124).

    • @obsoletecd-rom
      @obsoletecd-rom 3 роки тому +2

      It’s almost like those masters you mentioned were already doing that before josh was born. Metheny for example was a horn player before he picked up the guitar.

    • @creepingequinox7359
      @creepingequinox7359 Рік тому
