YOUNG William Shatner as Empathetic Teacher - 1961

  • A very young and handsome William Shatner doing his best to get in touch with his students learning needs -- from the movie "The Explosive Generation" -- all he was trying to do was to get them to think for themselves... a ridiculous notion pointed out by his colleagues. The adults have to do the thinking for them, everyone knows that. Geez.

I'm hardly Shatner's #1 fan, but he's had a heck of a career, and he's still a really classy guy. Few actors age as gracefully as he has -- this is a fun movie in a corny kind of way, but you can certainly see his appeal early in his career. This was the first movie he was the leading man (imdb).

He had the most amazing, exotic-looking eyes. What I love, though, is that he doesn't take himself too seriously. Not only that - he now looks like a well-preserved, good-looking 65-year-old man. AND HE IS 85. 85 freaking years old! He doesn't look, sound, move, think, or act like a man above 70, and it isn't just demeanour, it's attitude. He either made a deal with the devil or is on to something the rest of us need to pay attention to. This movie was 55 years ago. Can't even wrap my head around it!

Child labor laws.... 😳. Or probably more accurately, Shatner inspiring a 1960s sex conversation with real, clearly obvious sixteens year olds would have adversely impacted his budding acting career. I'm a retired High School teacher and the only way I would have approached that lesson is with a class of students held back for five or six years. Except for the starry eyed blonde (not really) (okay, really) (but that's a joke, I didn't mean it like that) (unless she showed up at my trailer between shooting) (then I would have to give her a stern lecture on appropriate behavior) (and a spanking) (on her bare bottom). And then, I'd be blacklisted in television and movies and the only part I'd ever get for the rest to my Shakespearian-trained acting career would be the anonymous guy in the Enterprise landing parties that beams down to planets and is killed in the first 20 seconds. But I digress... that's just me, speaking off the top of my head, it's not like I've given it any thought before this second. But Shatner, he's above all that, he has bigger goals in life (KKKAAAAAHHHNNNN!) Times like this I wish I had a Shatner emoji.... 🤔🖖

Yup siree (I made a joking comment elsewhere that both Jeff and Beau were on set in case one was too fussy to work, but that was a stupid old Hollywood child actor joke, and the fact I have to say that means it wasn't a very good one). Anyway, yes, that's Beau -- if you check out IMDB or maybe wikipedia (wherever you might find a cast listing), you might be surprised at some of the cast members in 1961 that had early or bit parts -- beyond Shatner of course, and Edward Platt (it's too bad they didn't have the foresight to give the Platt's principal office some kind of Get Smart spy entryway... and maybe just one time have Shatner say the "Don't tell me.... I asked you not to tell me that" gag.🤣 But these early sixties bad movies were exactly crucibles of prescience🤔 (Platt wouldn't be The Chief until 1965, so he had four more years to work his way up from School Principal). I think some oof these movies are great fun, I need to post a few more -- this one was near and dear to me heart because as a young man, I was the idealistic young teacher "challenging the system, man." 😳 I just wish I was getting laid as much as Shatner was back then (no, not by students, either). But, I digress... 🤦‍♂️

This despite their cells following specific directions and make exactly what they make... a male or female. The cells are not confused, if they are they make a hermaphrodite and even then a test shows if it was supposed to be a male or female. It is understandable if a hermaphrodite is confused, there is one reason regular built humans are confused, education in the home and school has become shite and it started going down hill in the 1960's.

Was the movie stupid? You say this without qualification and three full exclamation points after stupid in all caps. That's like going to the Grand Canyon and saying it's dumb (with four exclamation points). We're interested in why you might feel that way -- you should, too.
Usually when people react the way you do, they haven't had an opportunity to understand and appreciate the full range of Bill Shanter's talents. But was the movie really stupid? In what sense? From the standpoint of similar pictures from 1961? Maybe it was the co-stars: some had gone on to their own success, but many had not. Was it Beau Bridges? (Maybe you were disappointing not getting Jeff). To be fair, you really need to see the movie before writing it off as stupid. I've been thing of posting more clips because you can never get enough Shatner, but the full movie is easily found.
Good Luck to you Bill Anthony.
