    My V1 arrived yesterday. It looks unique & is well-made. Majohn took a risk making a pen as unique as this. They will not sell as many as the more common designs. This design is great, lots of little touches that work well. With ink fill, the balance should be closer to the nib. I'll let you know when I ink mine up & do a review. Thanks for being the first to present this fascinating pen.

      I think you'll enjoy it. I'm all for encouraging them to step out on their own design-wise. It's cool that they went down a road less traveled on this one.

    That is unique enough to buy for two reasons. First because it’s so unique and second to encourage more Chinese manufacturers to keep making original designs.

      @@Sapta_Chakra The Lotus Hide and Seek is a converter, and also not a demonstrator. Albeit, you could argue there are some similarities, it's definitely not a clone.

    This may be my own personal preference but given the size of the pen, I would have liked a #6 nib installed. There seems to be enough space in the tube to accommodate this nib.
    It is interesting to say the least. It is also a pen that does not rely on the standard cigar shape. I will have to seriously consider this pen. One viewer suggested that he nib may dry out when in the tube but if is seals well, I don't think it will be a problem.
    As I have seen with mother models, the clip is really a roll stop. I guess you could use it but it is very short and made to look like a clip but it is really a self contained roll stop.
    Great review, James. I think I will consider it for my next pen purchase.

    I received this stunning and unique designer-pen from Majohn together with the new Jinhao 9019's. And was immediately absolutely fascinated by this FP. The F nib was surprisingly soft and wrote immediately without scratching. A little buffering and reverse writing was also possible. In my opinion, Majohn has developed an absolutely great writing instrument, very different from all the usual designs. Thanks for this carefully created video showing a well balanced. fair review.

    You definitely can get a full fill every time from a vac filler. There's a neat little trick where, after your first attempt, you just push the piston until the ink is at the top, then dip it back in the bottle and push it down again. You'll usually get a full fill after your second attempt, at least in my experience.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  11 місяців тому +1

      True. 👍 My reference was that you won't get it topped up on the first try. I'm trying to empty pens lately more than fill them (too many inked pens!), so I didn't bother.

    It's a bit of a Marmite pen for me. While I applaud Majohn for the unique design, the clip and the cap are a deal breaker for me. But who knows, I am a woman and changing my mind apparently is my prerogative, so I may end up with this pen in the long run after all. The same happened with the Majohn C4 and I love it to bits. Thanks for another great review, James.

    Thanks James,
    Great review! I've had my eye on the pen for the past few weeks and was waiting for someone to do a review on this one. I started this fountain pen hobby by buying many of these Chinese pens (Wing Sungs, Hong Dian, Jinhao, Delike, PenBBS) and am trying to stay away from them unless there are absolutely raveing reviews or something VERY unique catches my eye, like this one did. My Moonman/Majohn fountian pens are some of my favorite Chinese pens.
    The only thing holding me back is; even though you can shut off the in flow, I would assume ink will eventually splatter inside the cap. Thats going to be a challenge to find long enough Q-tip swabs to clean this out. Can you let us know if this is an issue?
    Thanks!

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  11 місяців тому

      I did have to clean it out once already (I accidentally knocked several pens off the desk, no damage, though!). I just twisted a thin paper towel until it reached up into the end of the cap. Worked great. If you need long Q-tips, there are 6 in. swabs made for pistol barrel cleaning that work available on Amazon.

    There's a lot of volume in that cap. I'm wondering if it might cause the nib to dry out a bit. I want to love it but it just seems a bit... odd. I also have small hands, so the back weight might be an issue - I don't post any of my pens for this reason.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  11 місяців тому +1

      I'm not sure, yet, about dry-out. So far it's OK, but I haven't had it as long as I like to say that for certain.

  • @wwbdwwbd
    @wwbdwwbd 11 місяців тому +3

    I wonder if the nib easily dries out when capped. I don't see an inner sleeve to seal the nib, and since the 'cap' is one long tube, there is much room for evaporation.

    Hi James! Thank you for this interesting review of a rather emblematic fountain pen model. We can also recognize an innovative look, but certainly they have combined it with one of the Moonman Super Quality nibs famous for their free inspiration from the Pilot nibs. Very interesting in performance for F and EF traits. In 2019 you could buy one of these complete nib assemblies for under a dollar. As I wrote to David, there is no clip in the traditional sense. Too bad for the sad evocation of death and destruction that we receive from the name V1... or will it really be a bomb among the fountain pens of 2023?

    This looks a lot like a Franklin Christoph Model 33, but with the vac-fil. I don't know if they made any demonstrator versions, so this shows off the ink supply. The FC is a cartridge/convertor so wouldn't have that to show.

  • @Heikki_Finland

    The idea of making the cap to serve as a full length protective sleeve is quite interesting to me. Montblanc Moctezuma has somewhat same idea, but it still has the thread in traditional place which makes more sense to me than this huge end fineal thing. That and the lack of inner cap makes me think this is rather cheaply made gimmick item. There's not much to protect. The pen inside should be stunning, to justify the need for protection. Moctezuma has quite simple pen too, but the cap itself could need some protection so it's kind of wrong too.

    Definitely unique. Yes, the pen interests me and watching UA-cam reviews of the V1 will determine whether I get one. On the subject of "Pro's and Con's" I wish Majohn had fitted a #6 size nib. The #5 size looks too small to me. Also, is that short clip practical? Why didn't they extend the clip length just a little bit more? That said, it is a special looking pen. I like the golden version, not so sure about the silver model. Do you feel the capping and uncapping of the pen during a writing session is a bit clumsy due the size of the outer tube?

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  11 місяців тому +1

      Capping/uncapping is definitely more of a conscious act at this point, but not bad.

      @@JG3Reviews You keep saying about the clip in these Majhon models: there is no clip in its traditional concept. As for the C4 and in all Majhon's transparent "test-tube" style fountain pens, including the V1, as well as other Chinese manufacturers, see Fanmu, the clip is not provided in the traditional sense. The clip has an anti-roll function only.

    To me the design of this pen is like one of those Hollywood bad movies that are so bad they become cult films with time 😂 Doug Rathbun once slammed Moonman/Majohn for copying designs instead of creating their own, well, this demonstrates they can and they should do it more often. The only thing I would like to change of this pen is to have a #6 nib instead of a #5, there's enough room inside the cap to fit it.

      The grip section is about the same feel as a TWSBI Eco's, so thinner than the VAC 700 in the grip. the barrel beyond the grip is just slightly narrower (12.8 v. 12.4 mm) than the Eco's, if that helps.

    Definitely an original looking pen, but doesn't fit my fancy - just a bit too odd looking. I'm also hoping that Majohn and other Chinese pen makers will start offering medium nibs. I personally don't mind "inspired by" designs, as long as they offer something a bit different in the way of colors and appointments.

    There are strange practicalities to that cap. The pen is sort of in its own little bell jar, and the cap won't get lost in a shirt pocket for those who don't post. It is always better, though, if the cap has a seal or at least a step to block ink colic from the section.
    You love your pens, understandable. You sympathize when they get colic from an upsetting flight. But you still don't want ink colic on your fingers. Ewww.
