Eyedropper + Ink Review: Moonman (Majohn) S5 + Noodler's Cactus Fruit Ink

  • My review of the Moonman (now Majohn) S5 eyedropper (both F & stub nibs), plus a look at Noodler's Cactus Fruit ink (from the Noodler's Eel ink line). Noodler's nailed the prickly pear fruit (aka prickly pear tuna) color, as you'll see in my fresh-picked side by side.
    I bought my S5 pen here: amzn.to/34n0Zme
The Cactus Fruit ink is here: amzn.to/3dQpdIS
(I got my ink from Goulet in a sample set, which is a great way to see if you like it before committing to a whole bottle, and a great family-owned business)

We don't get those fruit over here in the UK as far as I know, but I have only recently discovered this ink. I've had variable experiences with Noodler's inks, but they nailed it with Cactus Fruit. I absolutely adore the colour, the flow, the saturation, everything. Normally I prefer my inks to be more businesslike and, dare I say it, boringly traditional. That's why it is so out-of-character to fall head over heels for this ink. It leaps out and stabs you in the eye, but at the same time it is smooth. I like it best in stubs or broads, but it is equally at home with finer nibs. Fantastic stuff.

Funny the timing that you commented on this. I had just been thinking about getting this ink back out for a Kanwrite PC Metal pen I'm trying out. I had been leaning back and forth between this and Oxblood. Cactus fruit has won out.
They are ripe here in Texas at the moment, but as dry as it has been, I suspect the wildlife will have them all eaten pretty soon.

@@JG3Reviews Oxblood and Matador are great too. Perhaps also check out J Herbin Rose Cyclamen. While Herbin inks are low maintenance, I tend to find them a bit too unsaturated and faint for my poor vision. Rose Cyclamen bucks the trend. It's not the same hue as Cactus Fruit and doesn't have its lubricated properties as far as I know, but it's a good rich colour all the same. In a stub or a broad you can also get more shading out of it than cactus fruit, if that appeals to you.

Like yourself I also like a stub nib. Not partial to F nibs, with most of my pens
having a med nib. I also like the 1.0 stub nibs found on my Fountain Pen
Revolution pens. Like the looks of that Noodler's ink.

Good review, I like the pen, in constant use with B (1mm stub) nib. Noodler's Eel inks are lubricated, making it a wet ink. Stay safe & healthy.

I really like this pen's ultra clear look. It really shows of there ink color well. I actually like the roll stop. If don't like fins, or facets. (It is my only clip-less pen) Side note: I actually own every one of the comparison pens. Not sure what tha means. 😀

Love that idea of swappable nibs, great for a fountain pen newbie or ink testing, as you say. I like the colour of that ink, too, reminds me of Colorverse ‘Andromeda’, which is what I keep in my TWSBI ECO!

Noodler's has a similar color called Saguaro Wine, that is a vivid red-purple.
Ever had pickled prickly pears? They're made a lot like spiced apple rings. Pretty good. My grandmother is gone now, though, and I never got the recipe. Not sure how she made them.
Incidentally, my Noodler's Charlie pen, that I also got with a large bottle of Noodler's The Heart Of Darkness ink, is my only eyedropper and kind of steered me away from eyedroppered pens. Apparently I have hot hands or something, and I had a lot of trouble with it burping, even shortly after filling it. The big messy splotches of ink just made me not like these types of pens.

I had that experience with an FPR freebie eyedropper. It burped badly and I gave up on them for a while. So far, so good with this one. I've had pretty good luck with the Charlie so far, which surprises me since it seem barely different from the FPR pen.

Great review of this pen which i already have,i notice the other day while using it that the roll stop gem had disappeared which in a way was a plus as i never liked it.Will have to have a look for the ink colour its nice.Alas as for the cactus we dont get much of them in the wild in the uk,mainly as house plants😊

They are an invasive species around here. Farmers and ranchers have to work hard to keep pastures clear of them, and for many, it's a losing battle.

Thank you for your review. It was very helpful. I would have taken one look at the pen and thought the design was a deal-killer. Form does follow function, so your review (especially pointing out that it could post anyway) convinces me to take a look. It looks like I might use it as a desk pen anyway. (BTW: I am not originally from Texas, but I eventually ended up in a doctoral program and law school at Texas Tech. Lubbock is not much to look at, but we loved the people and (had we not had terminally ill family back in Illinois) might have stayed. After a few years as a pulpit minister, we almost moved back to one the Texas A & M system universities, but Pepperdine won (or they lost, I won). Next, always thought we would retire in Texas. Now my kids are settled here near Thousand Oaks; hence, we retired here, If either of our daughters and families ever move there, we might be Texans again! :) Blessings on this hobby and service. Fun stuff! [If, as many in ministry, you enjoy C. S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, I will share my idea that I may yet launch.]. LKW

Thanks. We've got a few common grounds. My wife and I met in Lubbock and went to school there, and I have a lot of friends that went to Tech. My wife's great-uncle was Dean of Admissions at Pepperdine in the 80s. And I haven't read as much Tolkien, but am very much a Lewis fan.

@@JG3Reviews Was that Bob Fraley? I came to Pepperdine first in 1983, but I left to preach full time during the summer of 1986. After 4 years (especially when I looked at how I was going to finance my older daughter’s college education (it was 1990 and she would be a first year student in 1994), I got a call to come back to college education! However, by 1992, I was doing both and enjoyed long stints at two different churches over the next 25 years. Small world! (I will let you know when the C. S. Lewis Oxbridge Conference is (1 week in college at Oxford, seeing the Kilns (his home restored now); perhaps 1 week at Cambridge) While the significance of Cambridge is less (Lewis only spent the last few wording years commuting to spend about 4 days a week in Cambridge), the city is by far more significant for the Reformation Movement. Cambridge was a Protestant city; Oxford was a Catholic city, so there you get to see the monument to the reformers brought to Oxford and burned at the stake. Oxbridge was moved to next summer because of Covid this year; it occurs normally once every 3 years. I may try to make one more before I give up international travel. If you do not spend much time in London, then the one-week or two-week options are affordable. K

@@keithwhitney7491 Yes, it was Bob. That sounds like a great trip. We were in the UK last year and had hoped to make Cambridge, but we had delays at Canterbury and had to skip it.

Seeing the "tunas" is making me hungry! I can only get them seasonally here in Michigan, and it's sometimes hard to find a good price for them around here.
Nice pen, but I'm not sure about the roll stop. Probably would have been better if they had done it with a bead on the cap band, instead of the somewhat gaudy "gem."
I'm TRYING to keep just a core selection of colours of ink, but as I love the "tunas" (yes, I was introduced to them by someone from Mexico, so I tend to use the same name they use), and I am kind of looking for a "summer colour for letters for the summer, you may have just encouraged me to get some. Grrr... 😁

Love the prickly pear fruit. But I don't get the prickles, because I pick them with BBQ tongs and a gas torch. Those nasty little hair-like devils burn straight off once you get the knack of handling them.

Thank you, James, for another great review. I love that you review pens that ordinary folks can afford! I've just ordered an S5 on the back of this review: the solid bit at the end of the pen should stop hand-heat warming up the ink as much as with a Charlie, so fewer burps. Keep it up! (PS - what does cactus jelly taste like?)

Looking for a replacement for an ink that happens to be discontinued and almost running out. ^^*

I've watched a few reviews of this pen, and I have yet to see a man who liked the gem. I am curious to see if women like it. I don't quite get why men would object to it, aside from the possibility that they have been trained to dislike things that are perceived to be too "feminine." Because they like the functionality of it, but not the look. I saw one reviewer say he wouldn't mind it if it was just a gold half sphere.
