It’s not live but it gives the best impression of what the studio recording would have looked like if you were watching it being recorded. Three guys, drumkit , bass, and the most musical synthesizer anyone ever made.
The last time I saw them they were opening for Santana, the album "Brain Salad Surgery" is a masterpiece.

Wonderful amalgam of classical, rock & jazz. These guys are/were giants ... My favorite band hands down since 1970. In 1968 I was a Greg Lake fan and followed him when he left King Crimson to form this new band. It absolutely electrified me and I never looked back. RIP Keith & Greg .....ELP FOREVER!!!
When I watch this clip I get a case of keyboard envy. The Yamaha GX-1 was one of about a dozen, though they used to say 1 of 6. The modular Moog was 1 of 1, “the world’s most dangerous synth”. Moog Music did build a handful of Emerson tribute modulars that sold for $150,000 a few year’s ago.
BTW, this was a “rocked-up” cover of one of Aaron Copland’s classical Fanfares. And, I do remember the original version being played at one of the recent Olympics. Thanks.

So great, so cold. Must try the quintessential ELP, “Lucky Man” or “From the Beginning “. Two love song worth your time are “C’est La Vie” and “Still You Turn Me On”. Greg Lake’s voice is worth the listen alone. Album versions are best. Peace
You might give Triumvirat a try. Particularly "Illusion on a Double Dimple" or "Sparticus". Triumvirat is another progressive power trio. Quite similar to ELP.

Emerson Lake and Palmer came during a time of great musical explorations and expression, sadly today due to the lack of musical training in the schools and in private homes and the willingness not to train young people to express art and not be willing to accept the pre packaged pre recorded nonsense that is being passed for art today is a civilizational crime our culture is being Manipulated by soless thugs who could not care less about art and care everything about power, greed and what fits the narrative that serves their purposes. Remember free thinking is a danger to them.

You were right about Keith Emerson on the keyboards, to this very day, he is the most highly regarded piano and keyboards player in modern music, no exceptions !

There are still some of those old Jazz aficionados still around. You know the type. They sneer at anything that isn't what they grew up with. "ELP is so pretentious!" Our generation thinks we're being "old curmudgeons" when we accuse Katy Perry as having the talent of one of the headliner girls in a 1950's variety show.
They actually discussed touring with Hendrix at one point. They could have been HELP!
Emerson almost ended up playing for Yes. But he decided to create ELP.
I once left a live Allman Brothers concert, that I had been at for a few hours anyway, so I could go home and watch Emerson Lake and Palmer, who were appearing live on television!!! The music was unique and I believe perfectly timed, as in, came out in the 70s just when it could really be appreciated!!

The other Copeland song ELP covered is Hoedown. Which is a song I use as my alarm on my phone because it is very jolting from the very beginning.
Thank you for covering ELP. I saw them many times, with the first time being in 1974. After one of the shows in the 1980s I got to hang out with Keith Emerson, the greatest keyboard player ever, and Carl Palmer on tour bus and visit with them for awhile. After one of their shows in the 90s I got to go hang out backstage at a meet and greet. Yes, they were geniuses. Keith Emerson and Greg Lake have both passed away now. But I did get to tell Keith Emerson on the tour bus, "You are the greatest ever".
For many years Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man was the opening music for the Olympics then ELP's version became the one used.
A world of thanks to you for recognizing such great talent and shear genius. I remember first hearing their music back in 1969 through 1970 and onwards. Tarkus...Trilogy.. and on to Brain Salad Surgery... In those days we were a minority listening to this music. I hope people will start to recognize the masters of music of the time...
Should have been in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 25 years ago.. what an absolute crime.

Probably most of the people watching this video aren't even aware that this was composed by Aaron Copland in 1942 of course it was not unusual for Emerson Lake and Palmer to draw upon classical influences in their music.
Copland was not a 'big fan', he just allowed ELP to publish this cover, because he find it odd and strange but nevertheless amusing and interesting. The guy was bewildered at first, specially because of the long solo and overall crazyness of the electronic sounds in Emerson playing

Believe it or not it wasn't winter.......it was a freak August snowstorm in Montreal !

Wow! Again, you two are great! Doing a reaction video to ELP. You don't see ELP reaction videos too often by anyone. They were my first concert that I went to in 1977 in 10th grade. They were superb! Thanks again.
Real,Amazing trio, incredibile group,my all-time favorite with early Genesis,Jethro tull,yes,King Crimson, early Pink Floyd (ummagumma atom Heart mother period),and soo german seventies artists like Klaus schulze,Tangerine dream,can,popol vuh,harmonia,embryo,grobschnitt,Amon duul,Faust,gong.
This was filmed at the Montreal Plympic Stadium, built for the 1976 Summer Olympic Games. As you can see, this was shot in the midst of a Montreal Winter, which in the 1970s, before Global Warming hit us, were brutally cold and snowy. I was in Middle school and walked to school every day, through streets and fields pile three of four feet high with the night's snow. G-d, it was beautiful and fun!
This is ELP's version of a piece written in 1942 by American cmposer Aaron Copeland. Keith Emerson on keyboards (also plays synthesizer or piano on other songs), Carl Palmer on drums/percussion, Greg Lake guitarist and singer--of course he doesn't sing in this one and only plays bass in this piece but often plays lead guitar or plays an acousitc guitar on other pieces.
This is originally a mid-20th century symphony by U.S. composer, Aaron Copland. As difficult and challenging as this electronic version gets as it goes on, the symphonic sersion is even harder to bear with, if one doesn't have an open mind.
You may recognize the tune from the classical piece by the same name by Aaron Copland from 1942.

Recorded at the '' unfamous '' Olympic stadium at Montreal , Quebec , witch i come from . The roof of the stadium wasn't completed yet ... '' unfamous '' because it wasn't ready for the 1976 summer Olympic , witch was and still is a dark moment for the city of Montreal ... the roof was suppose to be a retracting one and it never worked as well as it should have been ..... so they finally decided ...years after to call it quit for the '' retracting roof '' and made it a permanent closed one

Fanfare for the common man was composed by classical composer and American Aaron Copland in 1942. Of course this version by Emerson Lake and Palmer is great also.

Aaron Copland's original work was the opening music for the Olympic Games but a number of years back I noticed that
ELP's version was bei g used for the Olympics. Great choice! It maintains the spirit of the original while infusing it with new upbeat dynamism.
Pretty cool or cold, isn't it?
Here is a transcription of an interview given by Greg Lake and Carl Palmer about this recording:
LAKE: I remember we were rehearsing in a basement beneath the Olympic stadium. It was the only place large enough to fit the whole orchestra in to rehearse. A phone call came in and I had to go up and take it, and everybody took a coffee break. So during that break I took the elevator up to the ground floor, which actually took me to the Olympic stadium. We had just heard that they wanted to release it as a single. My initial reaction was like, ‘Well, no, we’re too busy doing the rehearsals with the orchestra.’ And I went up to the stadium and I was looking at this absolutely mind-blowing site, covered in virgin snow, with the Olympic rings lit up in neon lights at both ends. It was an eerie sight, begging for something to happen, and I thought, ‘Video.’ we got the crew to move the gear up to the stadium the next day to start recording. Of course, what we didn’t plan was for it to be way below zero. My fingers would literally slip through the strings. So we had to record it in fairly short bursts, but it was a lovely film in the end.
PALMER: It was something like 20 degrees below, it was extremely cold. We managed to shoot three times - a few cameras on one person, a whole take, the same on the next guy, the same on the next guy - and then one take of all of us playing together. But it was very, very cold. The music has lasted, though, it has endured and it’s been truly fantastic. I mean, quality always lasts, and I sincerely believe that we had a lot of quality going there - we weren’t just a prog band, we had pretty songs as well. So it was quite eclectic.
A good song to keep the rhythm going when you have to clear 18 inches of snow from the parfield of an Olympic-size stadium.

This was the studio version from "Works Vol. 1" combined with a video of them playing the same song. That doesn't deter from the power and genius on display here, but that is why it sounds so good and ends so abruptly. This piece was actually an interpretation by Keith Emerson of a composition by the same name by modern classical composer Aaron Copeland.
