Jerusalem was a poem written by English poet William Blake in 1804 and was set to music by Hubert Parry about a hundred years later. One interpretation (out of many) of the poem ponders the question about whether or not the beauty of heaven can still exist in England during the time just prior to the industrial revolution and became something of an anthem in England. This is one of many performances of classical pieces re-interpreted by ELP. They were quite fond of American composer Aaron Copeland (Hoedown and Fanfare for the Common Man). Thank you so much for reacting to this wonderful track.

A big push...to make this England's national anthem...by the way...according to myth...Jesus did come to England as a young man, with his father Joseph...they stayed at Glastonbury, which in later centuries, was a place of holy pilgrimage..there was a famous tree that lasted for thousands of years..that tree was not native to Britain, but was native to ancient Jerusalem!!

I love this song, but not many people seem to know it. ELP’s version is so powerful.

You might recognise this tune if your a Cricket fan at an England match (particularly in England) because the fan's have taken on this tune as their anthem.

Two more classics from this band; Lucky Man and From the Beginning. Oh, and how could I forget ELP's "Cest la Vie"? I would recommend that one before the other two I mentioned earlier.

Anglo-Israelism was very popular during "mad" Blake's time. It extended as a variant to Mormonism in the United States, where Christ was supposed to have preached to the natives.

Good choice. I've heard versions of this song in many other movies (like Chariots of Fire and even a Monty Python sketch I think ). I know they also sing it in English Protestant/Anglican churches. I think its from an old English poem...A similar ELP cover song to look into is Copeland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man'...

These songs should be played in baby cribs so when they grow up they won’t be so angry about everything. Too late for millennials.

It was interesting to watch both you trying to figure out what you were listening to at the beginning of the song. With Prog Rock one never knows what to expect. The classical, jazz and rock influences all meld into mystical, magical compositions although this is a cover of a William Blake hymn. Back in 1973, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer made an interesting decision regarding their album, Brain Salad Surgery. They decided to record their own version of the hymn, “Jerusalem,” and make it the first song on the new album. It is known for its heavy nationalism, which is why it is such a beloved hymn in Britain. Undergirding the poem is the legend of Christ’s supposed journey to England with Joseph of Arimathea. In the poem, Blake clearly questions the validity of the legend. ELP had made a name for themselves in the world of progressive ROCK.

You are music fans... you seemingly listen to everything with an open mind .....I don’t know too many people who would be willing to do this .. but ..I did grow up with this music ... reaction videos are a social phenomenon.... they are fresh eyes laid upon something we know is good... so? In a sense reaction videos reaffirm what we believe...

It's worth noting that Toccata is basically a rescoring of the 4th movement of Alberto Ginastera’s “Concerto for Piano No.#1” done with Ginastera's permission

I just realized why I like both ELP and Rush; they both use their instruments in different ways to create different timbres of sound which inspire the imagination. Their music is always an adventure.

My favorite group...and maybe favorite album (BSS). I was fortunate enough to have attended the concerts (twice) on that tour in '74. And that includes the concert in Anaheim, CA--from which the multi live album was recorded. Ah...those were the days.

I was about twelve when this album came out. Occasionally, the choir at our church, or one we might be visiting, would sing this, and I'd geek out: "I can't believe they're doing that Emerson, Lake and Palmer song!"

To Offend or Be Offended, where social media now dictates how everyone thinks & lives, welcome to the new millennium ... ELP's arrangement is so beautiful BUT at the time ELP released Jerusalem as a single, Radio One, a national pop station in Britain banned it on the grounds it was irreverent ... implying a Rock & Roll band had the audacity to take a beloved hymn of the British people & turn it into a rock/pop song ... Blow it out your asses British hierarchy ...

The song is a hymn that is commonly sung in English churches. It was played at William & Kate's wedding (the traditional hymn--not ELP's version). Seems like you enjoyed Greg Lake's voice. He can sing like an angel or rock it out---two completely different styles done equally well.
