This is a big hit in the U.K. when it was released in 1977, it is in fact a cover of a classical piece written by American composer Aaron Copland in 1942 for The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, but this version by the British band is the most well known, and is one of their biggest hits, this version was cut short but only by about 30 seconds or so, it has a lead out of drums and keyboard.

I've watched and heard this piece probably a hundred times over the decades. That intro, while it sounded like horns, is actually Keith Emerson playing that on his Yamaha synthesizer.

Although Keith Emerson and Greg Lake are no longer here, Carl Palmer is still slaying the drums at the age of 74, playing with the energy of a man 50 years younger.

Aaron Copland’s anthemic “Fanfare for the Common Man” gets the prog-rock treatment in a version that probably earned the renowned composer more than anything else in his entire career.
Buoyed by a propulsive groove from Lake and Palmer, Emerson uses his ultra-expensive, state-of-the-art Yamaha GX-1 synth to reproduce the orchestral colors of Copland’s piece before embarking on an extended solo. The track achieves an undeniable majesty and momentum. It ended up giving the band their biggest hit ever, and has since been the soundtrack to innumerable TV sporting events. - Ultimate Classic Rock
Composer Aaron Copland: "Well, of course it's very flattering to have one's music adopted by so popular a group, and so good a group as Emerson, Lake & Palmer ... in each case, where I have given my permission (the other was for ELP's adaptation of "Hoedown"), there was something that attracted me about the version that they perform, which made me think I'd like to allow them to release it ... what they do is really around the piece, you might say, rather than a literal transposition of the piece, and they're a gifted group."

Finally I found a comment that mentions that this is a 'cover'. Quite a different take, however, from the brassy orchestral original (worth checking out).

Behind the keyboardist you'll see that rig with all the patch cables going in and out of it. At the time, it was known as "the world's most famous synthesizer." It even had a name; Keith called it "The Beast." And it wasn't just for show, it was the actual guts of the synth, with Keith making changes in the wiring during the show, according to the song being played.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer were an English progressive rock supergroup formed in London in 1970. The band consisted of Keith Emerson of the Nice, Greg Lake of King Crimson, and Carl Palmer of Atomic Rooster. They had a musical sound including adaptations of classical music with jazz and symphonic rock elements. Fanfare for the Common Man is a musical work by the American composer Aaron Copland. It was written in 1942 for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra .Cheers and all the best from England.

Olympics are held in even numbered years* and so the Montreal Olympics (famous in Australia 😛) was in 1976
This was famous in Australia because it was the first time in a while we didn't get a single Gold medal and was such a shock that the government formed the AIS - Australian Institute of Sports to train in a more professional way the next gen of athletes

In Australia, the tune was used as the introduction music to the sporting coverage on channel 7. From memory, Wild World Of Sports on channel 9 has a different tune. The music shows in Australia often played the ''Fanfare'' music video that you're watching. I remember as a kid being fascinated by the band's musicianship, but also growing bored with the whole thing due to over exposure.

Carl Palmer went on to play drums for Asia. For a short period, John Wetton left, and Greg Lake played bass and sing, but John Wetton returned. If you are not familiar with Asia, the had a hit with Heat If The Moment and their song Sole Survivor won a Grammy. But the whole first album was fire!
Greg Lake passed away, I think heart issues from memory ( but I could be wrong) then Keith Emmerson took his own life.

Got to see ELP one time, indoors, at a Symphony Hall. Great acoustics, but they blew out the power three times during the show, and picked up exactly where they were cut off each time, true professionals. Actually got to see a couple of games of Les Expos at the Olympic Stadium in 1980, a few years after this event, and it was a lot of fun. Youpie, their mascot, was having a "birthday' celebration, they gave him an ATV and he? was ripping around the Stadium on it. Woohoo. ELP were a true Supergroup of very talented musicians, and they proved it every time out.

Awwww … I’ve fallen back into my rude bad habits .. that’s the effect Prog bollocks like the middle 9 minutes of interminable showing off by Keith Emerson does to me .. the only good thing about ELP in general , is that they eventually got fed up with each other n split up - just wish they’d done it before allowing Keith to drive normally sane folk like myself to randomly dial any 11 numbers on my phone beginning with a 0 and telling whoever answers that I’m having a non binary relationship with their other half ! 😳 don’t blame ME .. blame ELP ! 😅
