Benin, a country in West Africa, was a major exporter of enslaved people to the Americas from the 16th to 19th centuries: Slave trade Benin's kings captured and sold enslaved people to European merchants, primarily to Brazil, Haiti, and the United States. The slave trade was most active in the 18th century, when the Kingdom of Benin exported more than 100,000 enslaved people. Ouidah A commercial center in Benin and one of the most active slave trading ports in Africa. Historians estimate that Ouidah exported more than one million enslaved people before the trade ended in the 1860s.

That is untrue, the Benin artistic skills never had anything to do with Ife that is why even till date, there is no part of Nigeria that can be compared to the binis when it comes to bronze casting. Infact, the prince of Benin that migrated to Ife is probably the reason why you have some traces of those art works there. Ask yourself, if the Benin’s got their art skills from Ife; how come they are not comparable to the Benin works? How come the bulk of these works are from and in Benin? It’s clear enough
Thank you bro. You know the story well. Because I was about to say the same thing. Our banished prince izeduwa. Which later became oduduwa of ife. Give the yoruba those ideal. The bini owns those art works

Lagos was a Benin army fort and it was called Eko. The republic of Benin is the next-door neighbor to Lagos. Mathieu Kerekou went and studied his history and found that there was connection between the two Benins by asking who were the original people that collectively unified the Fon tribe, and Benin kingdom became the obvious thought, because of they had done the same thing in Lagos (Eko) that was what allowed the name change from Dahomey to republic of Benin.
The great benin empire never acquired bronze casting from lfe. Bronze casting was created by the binis they spread the skills to other regions within the bini kingdom. All the evidence are still there in northern part of Edo state and Igun state.

@@afolabiagboola446 WHAT? A Yariba WHAT? Ife and Oyo were established by the Binis, IZODUWA discovered ILE IFE, whilst his son OMO NO YA established Oyo when he left Benin. Yaribas were servants to the Fulani that intermarry them and were pushed down South. EKO (Camp in Benin language) Lagos was established by another Benini prince. Read a book.
@@LeThelittleOnesComeToMe spreading nothing but misinformation across the comments. Oduduwa as i said in a earlier response to you never discovered ife it was already a great city. the idea that Oduduwa was bini is heavily contested espeically since yoruba sources say he came from the ora hills but generally theirs no proof to support Oduduwa coming from Bini other then the edos saying so something which is itself pretty shady. secondly the Yorubas were never servants to the fulani your probably thinking of the Ilorin situation. In Ilorin's case it was a long established Oyo province and headquarters of the aare ona kakanfo(basically the head of the provincial armies in oyo). Afonja the then aare ona kakanfo rebelled from Oyo over a succession dispute and to boost his numbers he used both Yoruba muslims who had been recently exiled from Oyo-Ile and rebel slaves from oyo(who were mostly Hausa fulani nupe and Borgu since they bought them from the Hausa kingdoms) as soldiers. after gaining independence from Oyo these soldiers rebelled against Afonja killing him and declaring a fulani cleric their leader, it was that clerics son who chose to join Sokoto willingly. Even then the new Sokoto caliphate Ilorin maintained Yoruba titles and organisation including the baloguns who ran the military and checked the emir forcing one emir to commit suicide in 1896.[this institution was later removed during British colonialism]. Also also Ilorin never made all Yorubas under them, after Alaafin Oluewu failed to retake Ilorin in 1835 due to betrayal by his generals Oyo fell and was replaced by a new Oyo, but the Ilorin forces were soon defeated by Ibadan in 1840 at Oshogbo. this was followed by a series of battle from 1840-1856 that saw the caliphate pushed furthere north and eventually repelled at Otan. they would eventually push even farther during the 1870s surrounding Ilorin until the Kiriji war stopped further advancement.
@@afolabiagboola446 yoruba and edo have linguistic and historical ties but i wouldnt call edos a subsidiary of Yorubas. in precolonial times they saw eachother as simply brothers seeing edos as yorubas who just happened to not speak Yoruba(although Yoruba was the palace language spoke by traders and elite in precolonial times.)

Benin Empire is my favorite historical empire of Africa, above Egypt and Carthage. A completely unique civilization. Art, clothing, architecture are unlike European, Asian or Native American, and the armor of Benin warriors looks epic.
Love from a Ukrainian Pole.

The djihadist uprisings in the 18th century together with the european imperialism and arab onslought at the same time destroyed many parts of africa
Thank you. I am haitian and we originated from Benin and you just reinforced our strength, our pride and our artistry to me. Thanks bro.

No you are not, the Benin (Edo) people he is taking about is a tribe in Nigeria 🇳🇬 and has NOTHING to do with the country Benin 🇧🇯.

Its 2020 and im back again to recognize my ancestors great accomplishments 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬
BUT THESE MODERN NIGERIANS ARE NOT THE SAME PEOPLE WHO CREATED THE OBJECTS !! THEY BELONG TO A LONG-LOST CULTURE !! THAT IS LIKE GIVING THE OLD ANCIENT EGYPTIAN ARTIFACTS TO THE MODERN EGYPTIANS !! THEY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM ! JUST BECAUSE THEY HAPPEN TO LIVE AT THE SAME PLACE THE ARTIFACTS WERE CREATED IS THE ONLY SIMILARITY !!

As a Bini Son, thank you for spreading our history.
Am proudly Edo. The Benin empire was one of the oldest and most highly developed states in west Africa, dating back to the 11th century. The Guinness Book of Records (1974 edition) described the walls of Benin City and its surrounding kingdom as the world's largest earthworks carried out prior to the mechanical era. This wall was said to be greater than the great wall of china

Great Benin empire... God bless are the Edo state people all over the world 🌎. Proudly Benin girl
Why doesn't anybody teach this in history classes? I am in architecture college and never heard of this before...this is disappointing.
I think we all know the answer to that question.
cec. because they want to dominate Africans.
cec6607 they taught us in school when I was young but it was later removed dissected to infiltrate the white mans version before it was finally removed.

because then little black kids would have confidence in themselves and the powers that be can't have that
Thank you brother from a Edo of the diaspora❤
Wow what you are doing is so needed especially to our young ones.
Thank you my brother....love from Nuremberg.
Thank you bro. You know the story well. Because I was about to say the same thing. Our banished prince izeduwa. Which later became oduduwa of ife. Give the yoruba those ideal. The bini owns those art works
Engineer Tom Lukas Africans and biased and tribal way of thinking. Always thinking they are better than one other. No research, no evidence, no carbon dating of any historical site to back up your claim and yet people just make up stories to make them feel better smh. Anyone can write an article and say what they wanna say but it won’t be accepted in any academic institution because it’s all opinion with no facts
That true bro. You are right
But ife's artworks are a little bit older than the Benin ones... The fact remains that they both share a common ancestry and their art is similar.
There is no need for a who came first or who did what first competition. We're all one family.

Thank you for your work. Truly opened my eyes
I'm benin and live in Edo state Nigeria and many indigenes say that there are no new roads in Benin city because these paths have existed for many years
Well done on another well researched video!
My brother point of correction the Binis never learned bronze cast from the Ife people,we taught the ife people, and second correction you started your history from the Second dynasty which is the OBA Dynasty the Ogiso dynasty started about 2nd century and before the Ogiso time Binis also experience Odionwere rules, the last Ogiso ruled in 11
How do they know these things, I think archeological evidence can date everything u can call man made...for example the Ekiti will tell u that they knew when people came here hundreds of thousands of years. But how do we know when people came and where were they coming from...could Benin be one man one woman ....Adam & Eve

But Iguegha the patrone of Bronze casters at Igun came from Ife.
@Joan Ede only that Ekaladeran or whatever you call him (since there's no consensus on how to pronounce his name) didn't come to Ife but died in Ughoton
Thanks for the correction. Let’s keep up the awareness the Yorubas are out to distort our history we will never allow that. They are our brothers but let the truth be told.
@@donisede8563 Yorubas are not out for anything. You are the ones that always have a problem with someone..if it's not Ijaw, It's Igbo, now Yoruba
Bini traditionalists, artists and historians have been saying that Bini got help from Ife to develope it's bronze industry...and Yoruba traditions confirm this too
It is only recently Binis are denying it, while your ancestors had already made it known even to European explorers and scholars

Is it Republic of Benin or Benin City? They are different...the country Benin which borders Nigeria used to be known as Dahomey, but later changed its name to Benin ( the old Benin empire) which is in Southern Nigeria
@@nigerdeltamirrortv9311 they are same bro. The people of Benin republic traced their ancestral home to the Benins in Nigeria. That was why they changed the name of the country from Darhomey to Benin republic after taking permission from the Oba of Benin.
