As an American I never had the opportunity to learn so much about the wealth of history about the continent of Africa and the variety of cultures and empires there in public school. I’m really grateful for the education this channel provides!
Because you're American lol. I'm Filipino and we don't learn about African, American or European history, we learn about our own history and other Asian histories to an extent - And we only cover Southeast Asian history, not East or Middle-eastern Asian history. You're likely not going to learn African history in an American history class.

I've lived in 3 African countries over the past 20 years and visited a couple more,, I can undoubtedly say the countries that are better off are those that cherish their culture, from music and dressing to food and rituals. I've also seen and learnt that by losing one's history one loses identity, and when identity is lost, so is ones future.

Great video as usual. Thank you for the research. I know Black Panther was a fiction movie but most of the gates you mentioned ( diversity, resources, ...) were turned into assets in Wakanda. Overall it was its defense technology that kept the kingdom safe. Even now our continent does not have the technologies it needs to defend itself. I think it was one of our weaknesses then and it still is now.

What are you talking about? Africa doesn't need all of that. Life boils down to whether or not you can work the land where you live. If you are a person of African descent do you mind coexisting with Asians and Europeans? No one has "conquered" you.

The buying and selling of slaves definitely left parts of the continent vulnerable. Likely selling Africans who were intelligent and strong taking their skills to build the western world with the Europeans taking credit or not acknowledging. To my understanding the first person who went to the north pole, invented the traffic light, and even the lawn motor were people of African descent. (PLEASE NO HATE IN THE REPLIES)

As a black man in the UK, parents from Jamaica- I came to the understanding that we lost the war 400 years ago. It's a complete shame but our ancestors have let us down. The only way for us to come back is for an "event" to take place but I don't see that happening.

I think African people feel we're so much stronger than everyone else that we can do it all ourselves and that's why there's a lack of unification. We're so strong we can survive anything so we forgive everyone cause we can endure. We only have issues with other Africans because they are just as strong and that creates fear.

I mean, if you look at Africa, uniting in the way Europe did, and yes I understand Europe is not one country, but uniting would be a lot more difficult. The climate made it hard to travel, and distance on top of that heavily factored in tribalism. You have to understand that in European history, many of the identities we see now like French, German, and British are identities made up of various people groups who were combined through conquering. The British Isles were conquered by Normans invading from Scandinavia, and they combined with the native people's of what is now Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Britain. The French and Germanic people both descend from the Franks who due to location were divided into two major groups, the Western part founded in Roman Gaul became what we now know as France (the name France itself is derived from Frank) and the eastern, more Germanic part due to themselves being culturally different from the western Franks became the "Holy Roman Empire" and though it wasn't called Germany officially at the time it was occasionally known as Germany. Africa just didn't have this type of thing going on. Honestly part of it also might be that they didn't have a big scary enemy like the Franks and other Germanic peoples did the in the form of the Romans in order to give incentive to work together.

On January 22, 1879, an army of 4,000 Zulus attacked a British outpost at Rorke's Drift, just over the border from Zululand in British-controlled Natal. The post was defended by 140 British troops. Over the next two days the British fought off repeated assaults by the Zulu warriors until the Zulus broke off the attack and retreated. Nearly 1,000 Zulus were killed in the battle (many of them wounded, taken prisoner, and massacred by the British) and only 17 British soldiers were killed. How and why did such a small number of European soldiers defeat an army 30 times their size? The answer has nothing to do with diversity, resources, religion, or any of the other factors mentioned in this video. And it wasn't any innate superiority of the British soldiers; the Zulus were as brave, disciplined, and skilled as any European army. The answer is quite simple: the British were armed with breechloading rifles, while the Zulus were armed with spears and shields. (A few Zulus had captured British rifles, but they had little ammo for them and were unfamiliar with the weapons and untrained in their use.) The massed firepower of modern rifles was too much for mere human flesh to endure, no matter how brave the souls inside that flesh were or how skillfully they were led and deployed. This sort of lopsided battle occurred over and over in the late 19th century in Africa and Asia. In 1898, an army of 8,000 British soldiers and 18,000 of their Egyptian and Sudanese allies annihilated an army of over 50,000 Mahdists at the Battle of Omdurman, killing, wounding, or capturing more than 30,000 of the Mahdists for the loss of fewer than 50 killed and 380 wounded. The modern artillery, rifles, and machine guns of the British slaughtered the Mahdists before they could get anywhere near the British and Allied lines. The factors mentioned in the video were certainly relevant, but any attempt to explain the rise of European world empires without reference to the superior technology of Europeans, particularly in firearms and ships, cannot possibly make sense of the historical events.

Power constantly shifts from kindom to kingdom. Thousands of years ago, it was Africa, then Europe, then now US. In due time, power will cycle back to us. We shouldnt vie for power. We should vie for stability amongst ourselves; enough food for our people to eat and places to live and be happy. I hope for a black Africa that is united, tolerant and dedicated to each others customs, healthy, thriving and safe ( wakanda level safe) from all threats, both domestic but espeecially foreign. White people and other non black people including asians etc cannot love us. They hate us from the first atom within us. Our coloration is an afront to their humanity, they will never see us as people or as fellows on this earth. We need to build impermeable defences against them. Live in peace with them, but keep them at Uber duper superior arms lenght. They are not and can never be our friends.
That will be almost impossible. Corrupt leaders alone won't allow that. Once traditional leaders get their power back (that is, taking power away from them), that is game over. Africa will plunder into civil wars (that the world won't view it as world War but rather as African continental war). Let's say, no one obeys the leaders, terrorism will escalate as they will see it as a way of establishing their religious beliefs forceful. It will become a hell. And also, we (young pop.) in the modern society have been westernized almost completely (if not completely) so it will be difficult to put it back to its greatest glory. Sorry if it is long, but that's my own point of view why it might not be possible.

Thank you so much for giving your true feeling and opinion on our plight. Very brave and appreciated. Of course not everyone would agree but that's ok. The only thing I could add is that forgiveness would have been ok and possibly needed to lessen feelings of hatred over time. But what we really needed to have is people who were willing to fight together for their home and culture. Instead they sold out. It wasn't technology that first weakened the African nations, it was wealth and religion that divided the people. To divide and concour, that's all it took. Fighting smaller groups and pitting one against the other was much easier then. It's a shame the ancestors couldn't see the bigger picture.
The Yoruba of Western Nigeria have a saying "Odo ti o ba gbagbe orisun e, o ma gbe keyin ni" roughly translates to; a river that forgets it's source will eventually dry up at the end. Thank you for condensing the fall of Africa into these '5 gates theory'. I have learnt and better understanding the our history through these lenses. I think these gates are morphing into other forms as time progresses. Religion for instance has become a tool for some Africans to subjugate their own people. It'll be interesting to take a look at how those gates look in this modern age. Thanks for your great work!
Ultimately Africa's downfall was due to their diversity but however we were not United. Somehow one can say that the Roman empire United most part of Europe by having a common kingdom in most part of the continent but Africans were mostly living in separate kingdoms.
The romans weren't the ones who conquered africa. The colonial european empires were, who were not united at all. Actually the opposite. They colonized so fast because of their competition with eachother.

I love this video it's the real unbiased truth. It shows something very important just because something is your culture does not make it good or useful culture and religion can adapt. I love this educational series and I just want to add something I was reading about in regards to the Sahara desert. The desertification of the Sahara was caused by a change in the Earth's axis around 8000yrs ago. According to scolars, the earth changes in it's position to the sun by about 25 degrees over a period of 41000yrs. It is believed that the north of Africa was gradually dried out as the amount of sunlight the area received increased overtime.

I have to disagree with you on that one brother. Depicting African leaders and the population of that time as so morally pure that they were naive enough to let the European to whatever they wanted would be engaging on the wrong path. The fact is, when we Subsaharan African met our European counterparts around the 15th century, they were so technologically superior to us (which wasn't the case during the past centuries during which we were almost equal) that they were able to impose us really unequal bargains (like selling slaves for weapons, iron bars, or horses). In the country I'm from (Senegal), a historian has a pretty interesting theory to explain the technological gap that has started widening during the 14th century. Long story short, he thinks it's related to the way we used to produce iron bars (using low furnace) whereas Europeans (and Chinese) started using blast furnace which gave them the ability to melt iron and mold it into the shape they wanted (to make guns, boats, Gutenberg's printing machine, you name it). Maybe as you state it, desertification played a role as we were no longer able to efficiently communicate with the north as to keep ourselves up to date regarding the latest trend. To sum it up, I think Africa fell because of a fatal technological mistake that led us progressively to sell our brothers and sisters and then get colonized.
I have come to similar conclusions. it doesnt exactly help north africa in the equation when there is a sea between europe and africa which creates not only divide in landmass but just as much in culture and progress and general human interaction, and these days it manifests in a form of illegal human trafficking from north africa to europe. cant really say they are refugees when they dont come from areas that face conflict, they just want to come over to benefit from european wealth, and for some reason these illegal immigrants cannot be detained. tho thats problem on our end and its a political one. could not have happened during worse time really. Im sure the human traffickers know of this and try to get as many people over as possible before we can unfuck this.

I'm Filipino and we don't learn about African, American or European history, we learn about our own history and other Asian histories to an extent - And we only cover Southeast Asian history, not East or Middle-eastern Asian history. Great video as usual. Thank you for the research. I know Black Panther was a fiction movie but most of the gates you mentioned ( diversity, resources, ...) were turned into assets in Wakanda. Overall it was its defense technology that kept the kingdom safe. Even now our continent does not have the technologies it needs to defend itself. The buying and selling of slaves definitely left parts of the continent vulnerable. Likely selling Africans who were intelligent and strong taking their skills to build the western world with the Europeans taking credit or not acknowledging. To my understanding the first person who went to the north pole, invented the traffic light, and even the lawn motor were people of African descent. (PLEASE NO HATE IN THE REPLIES)

Maybe that's a hint of what's currently killing Africa 🤔, maybe in Africa we should look at leadership differently from having one powerful president and a pyramid of gradually less powerful people. The slave traders came to get the Africans, yes, but who decided "let's not fight these people to the death to defend ourselves and just take their guns, Spices (whatever else they traded in)"? It was the leaders, whether they were Kings, chiefs etc. The leaders gave up their own. You can see that today with some of the incredibly stupid decisions you often see them making, e.g buying a govt minister a $70000 4x4 that will never see mud and neglecting the needs for a new lab facility in the public university, established road network for connectivity, favourable taxes for businesses etc, JUST to mention a few...
As a black man in the UK, parents from Jamaica- I came to the understanding that we lost the war 400 years ago. It's a complete shame but our ancestors have let us down. The only way for us to come back is for an "event" to take place but I don't see that happening.

I think African people feel we're so much stronger than everyone else that we can do it all ourselves and that's why there's a lack of unification.

I disagree. We have been brainwashed and taught to hate each other, therefore young African American shows this best - they kill over 2-3 thousand of each other every year. I mean, if you look at Africa, uniting in the way Europe did, and yes I understand Europe is not one country, but uniting would be a lot more difficult. The climate made it hard to travel, and distance on top of that heavily factored in tribalism. You have to understand that in European history, many of the identities we see now like French, German, and British are identities made up of various people groups who were combined through conquering. The British Isles were conquered by Normans invading from Scandinavia, and they combined with the native people's of what is now Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Britain. The French and Germanic people both descend from the Franks who due to location were divided into two major groups, the Western part founded in Roman Gaul became what we now know as France (the name France itself is derived from Frank) and the eastern, more Germanic part due to themselves being culturally different from the western Franks became the "Holy Roman Empire" and though it wasn't called Germany officially at the time it was occasionally known as Germany. Africa just didn't have this type of thing going on. Honestly part of it also might be that they didn't have a big scary enemy like the Franks and other Germanic peoples did the in the form of the Romans in order to give incentive to work together.

On January 22, 1879, an army of 4,000 Zulus attacked a British outpost at Rorke's Drift, just over the border from Zululand in British-controlled Natal. The post was defended by 140 British troops. Over the next two days the British fought off repeated assaults by the Zulu warriors until the Zulus broke off the attack and retreated. Nearly 1,000 Zulus were killed in the battle (many of them wounded, taken prisoner, and massacred by the British) and only 17 British soldiers were killed.
How and why did such a small number of European soldiers defeat an army 30 times their size? The answer has nothing to do with diversity, resources, religion, or any of the other factors mentioned in this video. And it wasn't any innate superiority of the British soldiers; the Zulus were as brave, disciplined, and skilled as any European army. The answer is quite simple: the British were armed with breechloading rifles, while the Zulus were armed with spears and shields. In 1898, an army of 8,000 British soldiers and 18,000 of their Egyptian and Sudanese allies annihilated an army of over 50,000 Mahdists at the Battle of Omdurman, killing, wounding, or capturing more than 30,000 of the Mahdists for the loss of fewer than 50 killed and 380 wounded. The modern artillery, rifles, and machine guns of the British slaughtered the Mahdists before they could get anywhere near the British and Allied lines.
The factors mentioned in the video were certainly relevant, but any attempt to explain the rise of European world empires without reference to the superior technology of Europeans, particularly in firearms and ships, cannot possibly make sense of the historical events.

That will be almost impossible. Corrupt leaders alone won't allow that. Once traditional leaders get their power back (that is, taking power away from them), that is game over. Africa will plunder into civil wars (that the world won't view it as world War but rather as African continental war). Let's say, no one obeys the leaders, terrorism will escalate as they will see it as a way of establishing their religious beliefs forceful. It will become a hell. And also, we (young pop.) in the modern society have been westernized almost completely (if not completely) so it will be difficult to put it back to its greatest glory.

Being a little bit more selfish seems to be the answer here having a leader with a maternal/ paternal instincts to protect and love the people, land and resources to a point where they will destroy any enemy who means these three things harm a leader like this is much more cautious and has no mercy or forgiveness for the enemy

Thank you so much for giving your true feeling and opinion on our plight. Very brave and appreciated. Of course not everyone would agree but that's ok. The only thing I could add is that forgiveness would have been ok and possibly needed to lessen feelings of hatred over time. But what we really needed to have is people who were willing to fight together for their home and culture. Instead they sold out. It wasn't technology that first weakened the African nations, it was wealth and religion that divided the people. To divide and concour, that's all it took. Fighting smaller groups and pitting one against the other was much easier then. It's a shame the ancestors couldn't see the bigger picture.
The Yoruba of Western Nigeria have a saying "Odo ti o ba gbagbe orisun e, o ma gbe keyin ni" roughly translates to; a river that forgets it's source will eventually dry up at the end. Thank you for condensing the fall of Africa into these '5 gates theory'. I have learnt and better understanding the our history through these lenses. I think these gates are morphing into other forms as time progresses. Religion for instance has become a tool for some Africans to subjugate their own people. It'll be interesting to take a look at how those gates look in this modern age. Thanks for your great work!
Ultimately Africa's downfall was due to their diversity but however we were not United. Somehow one can say that the Roman empire United most part of Europe by having a common kingdom in most part of the continent but Africans were mostly living in separate kingdoms.
The romans weren't the ones who conquered africa. The colonial european empires were, who were not united at all. Actually the opposite. They colonized so fast because of their competition with eachother.

I love this educational series and I just want to add something I was reading about in regards to the Sahara desert. The desertification of the Sahara was caused by a change in the Earth's axis around 8000yrs ago. According to scolars, the earth changes in it's position to the sun by about 25 degrees over a period of 41000yrs. It is believed that the north of Africa was gradually dried out as the amount of sunlight the area received increased overtime.

I have to disagree with you on that one brother.
Depicting African leaders and the population of that time as so morally pure that they were naive enough to let the European to whatever they wanted would be engaging on the wrong path.
The fact is, when we Subsaharan African met our European counterparts around the 15th century, they were so technologically superior to us (which wasn't the case during the past centuries during which we were almost equal) that they were able to impose us really unequal bargains (like selling slaves for weapons, iron bars, or horses).
In the country I'm from (Senegal), a historian has a pretty interesting theory to explain the technological gap that has started widening during the 14th century.
Long story short, he thinks it's related to the way we used to produce iron bars (using low furnace) whereas Europeans (and Chinese) started using blast furnace which gave them the ability to melt iron and mold it into the shape they wanted (to make guns, boats, Gutenberg's printing machine, you name it).
Maybe as you state it, desertification played a role as we were no longer able to efficiently communicate with the north as to keep ourselves up to date regarding the latest trend.
To sum it up, I think Africa fell because of a fatal technological mistake that led us progressively to sell our brothers and sisters and then get colonized.
I have come to similar conclusions. it doesnt exactly help north africa in the equation when there is a sea between europe and africa which creates not only divide in landmass but just as much in culture and progress and general human interaction, and these days it manifests in a form of illegal human trafficking from north africa to europe.
cant really say they are refugees when they dont come from areas that face conflict, they just want to come over to benefit from european wealth, and for some reason these illegal immigrants cannot be detained. tho thats problem on our end and its a political one. could not have happened during worse time really. Im sure the human traffickers know of this and try to get as many people over as possible before we can unfuck this.
