Yo Tex, you might like 'The X-com Files', an Open X-com overhaul. Starts you off with two dudes in a van, driving around exploring conspiracy theories, cultists and the occasional cryptid. Basically 90's X-files. Set before the invasion of the original X-com game. Then eventually the aliens attack and your team spearheads the X-com project, evolving from just a couple of FBI agents and turning into an army of Spess Mahrines with gatling plasma.
This sounds fucking awesome.

Step one: Conscript dregs into new "Earth Defense Force"
Step Two: Have them go through a week of training so they feel important.
Optional Step: Show off all the cool equipment your organization has (it matters not if they are only prototypes, the dregs will never touch them)
Step Three: Give all conscripts who can move a pistol and grenade.
Step Four: Stuff as many conscripts into a chopper as space will allow. Lash some onto the sides if rope is handy.
Step Five: YaluRiver.png
Rinse and Repeat. Just another glorious day in the Earth Defense Force.

There actually is a War of the Worlds strategy game set in the appropriate era, it's called Jeff Wayne's: The War of the Worlds.
You can either lead the defense of the UK or the martian invasion, assuming the survived they early game the humans actually had a fighting chance, the aliens were the opposite and it was a race to crush the humans before they manage to get too far into steampunk insanity. It's got the big strategy layer where you move your bigger formations around, build things and prepare defense of the various territories and a battle-layer where you fight the actual battles. Think something sort of similar to the way Wargame: Airland Battle or Red Dragon is set up but only in a general sense as it's been a while since I've played it.
I think a great idea for a game would be Xenonauts, but set in the Alien universe. A turn based space marine bug-hunt, only on the first mission the marines are only responding to a distress beacon, not even knowing that xenomorphs exists. Honestly, there's a lot that could be done there, and a lot of people who would enjoy it.
Actually, I wonder if Xenonauts has a mod for that.
Anyway, back to the top idea; cramped hallways and bad lighting, mixed with a bit of 80's space and Vietnam logic, would be wonderful. Also, you have to capture as many alive as possible so the company can profit off of them.

I don't even know who has the rights to make a game in that universe anymore. Probably worth looking up, because who knows, maybe nobody owns those rights.

Yeah, they actually bought a studio recently to make a game. It's gonna be a shooter. It's gonna be awful because that's not how that universe work, unless they set the game to a permanent super-hardcore perma-death mode.

so for anyone wondering, in the video BPL talks about xenonauts 2 and how they said it would be 3d... dw, its not *that* kind of 3d... it looks just like xenonauts 1 but has more roundedness to the sprites, so everything pops, so yes, its technically 3d as the models are 3d, but its displayed at the same angle as xenonauts 1 so doesnt look different, just a lot more high definition .... the bases look hella new though
I am definitely watching all of the episodes, as for the game developing part of your video, you mentioned dnd. You are correct that ambitious goals take time to come into fruition. My own 3.5 total conversion sci-fi mod took more than 10 years to complete and in the process, I gathered material for a dozen or so books set in the same universe. Finally, I got together with some friends and we are recording/posting the sessions on youtube.

When aliens arrive, my primary protocol is "I'm west Germany, our Eastern neighbors are coming from the sky and it's not a social visit with cheap stoli it's angry boys and armor. It's full auto G3 time!"
Here 4 Years later to say, They finally did it with the Dwarf Fortress steam release! Same game, new UI and new graphics, with the just recent addition of being able to use the old graphics too. and the best part, they plan to keep the old version up to date too as free.
Supa-hyped for this. Love Xenonauts and I can't wait to see Tex sending his troops to die. My only regret is that the soldiers can't have the classic Guile hair.
I remember the conscript method in the first xcom XD It was amazing!
I'd also never give rookies guns until they'd rank up since they just panicked like little shits and killed my good guys.. So I'd hand out sticks to them and sent them out first to scout.
A Delta Green-esque 50's X-Com would be SICK. Like "The Bureau," but good.

I name my dudes after the first significant thing they do. The guy who put the rocket past like 15 obstacles to get a hit really threaded the needle, hence I would have called him Needles.

also i started playing this on normal mode, and every one of my rounds occured at night, i have had everyone die at every crash site, for some reason my people keep missing and the aliums keep being able to shoot even when suppressed. the last round i survived an alien invasion of moscow long enough for the entire map to have all the fog and darkness lifted so i could see everything and everyone... i had 1 dude left, 2 aliums left, i still died, its so hard for some reason, i dont remember it being so hard, i havent won a single crash site because EVERYTIME the aliums fire at me they never missed and it always kills the dude they fire at, when i fire at them even pointblank range with a shotgun it takes 3 hits minimum and the rate i hit them is too low .... i think something had to have broken in the files, xenonaughts is hard, but it definately shouldnt be this hard

I might be late with this comment, but there's actually a war of the worlds game. Well, not world wide war, just in Britain, but there's a lot of management and logistical aspect to it. And it's effing hard! Wouldn't call it bad, just all right, kinda went under the radar.
I kinda want to see an x-com like game fighting angels and demons a bit like if darksiders' end war, responding to demonic and angelic incursions, figuring out what's going on, and either taking the fight to them or escaping into space...

my early game team looks like this:1 mg3,1 smaw. 1 smaw assistant(carrying 4-5 missiles), 1 sharpshooter, 2 assawults with c4 and shotguns, 1 dedicated medic with backpack filled with meds+pistol, and rest and 9 riflemen

Original X-com where using bad recruits as breaching charges is an acceptable tactic.
It's easy to forget that the PS1 version introduced the "open door" button. In the original, you had to just run in, forfeiting mutual surprise and eating Overwatch fire like pancakes.

there is a flamethrower mod, I dont know how good it is. Bazooka is not a bad idea for early game. Makes people stronk from carrying a big thing, also its almost a guaranteed kill, also its funny

Have you ever played Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction? It’s a PS2 TPS. You’re a PMC navigating a war in North Korea. From a war historian POV, the game is pretty interesting and accurate to the DPRK capabilities. It’s pretty immersive. (Tl;dr - game about DPRK artillery and Air Defense capabilities and tunnel logistics)

Unity really isn't that bad for 2d stuff, it's just that a lot of starting developers don't really know how to do it properly. Unity being free, it attracts a lot of people that don't really have the experience to make it look good.

Why is it that earth fighter jets at the beginning of the game are able to 100% take down an alien craft?
In game it's explained as the aliens not having ships that are effective in our thick atmosphere, being more designed for space flight. It takes one in game year for them to refit and adapt their fighters to be able to fight over earth.

yeah, one of the reason I like Xcom2 more than 1. It makes than, that they only send out 4-6 squads.. Best thing about the original is the whole war feeling and throwing soldiers at the enemy until they die. yes. both.
btw. remebered me of X-Piratez. you may like it. A mod for OpenXcom/ufodefence, in which you play as .. female pirates .. in the future.. after X-com failed to defend earth. Way more tactical and difficult than the original. Sadly no "throwing recruits until problem is solved" tactic. Hands are valueable and .. well better than your regular guy. I suggest watching a lets play or something. Oh and the game is loooooooooooong and full of grind but the content is massive, so the grind is less tedious.

I mean the small squad sizes in NuCOM are purely for making the game harder. Even the SEALs and Army Rangers have squad sizes of 7-9 soldiers.

For a UFO, I think probably 500 is the bare minimum.

I couldn't get into xenonauts because it aspec ratio doesn't fit really well with my 5:4 monitor...
(issues with overview (maybe I could zoom out.. don't know) and scrolling.. didn't work properly.. and window mode.. didn't work either.. god.. this whole game engine is a pretty mess... maybe.. xenonauts 2 is better on the technical site.. maybe I just skip the whole game (which is a heretical thought to my love to this genre) and just watch your playthrough.. the first playthrough of those games a really special if ... you know what I'm writing novels again.. I just stop here..)
