My experience was horrible. I will never go again. It was dangerous being black in Italy. Some do not take to it. Long story, I almost didn't make it there - they didn't want to treat me in there hospital - they kept calling me a drunk black girl - when I was really sick. I had to take an emergency flight back to the states. NEVER WILL GO AGAIN .BE CAREFUL IF YOU GO and you're a person of color

If we as black people wanted to be treated and perceived better internationally we will have to start caring about our reputation as a group. What you do as an individual reflects on all of us as a group. Black people have a bad reputation in airports, tipping at restaurants, not paying the bill in restaurants, speaking aggressively in social situations. There is a downside to being seen as strong and independent.

I just got home from Italy yesterday. I’m an American black man. The people seemed fine. But I am American, so maybe that affords me preferential treatment to a degree African immigrants don’t get. But I’ll say this, I saw no shortage of non tourist black people in Italy, particularly in Naples. And they appeared to be African immigrants for the most part. They didn’t seem overtly mistreated in noticeable ways. And I also saw many clearly “mixed” people in Italy as well, indicating the races are frequently sexually mixing. I’m sure racism exists, as it does in all cultures, but it didn’t seem any more or less prevalent than anywhere else. If you’re black, go to Italy and enjoy. You’ll be fine.

Why do we expect everyone to welcome us with loving open arms? Especially when we never do that even to each other. Women should not be traveling alone unless going to a job where someone will meet you and escort you anywhere in the world.

The western countries are the safest for blacks or anyone. Racism is 100x worse in most non-western countries. Asians are racist against other Asians, and westerners, but in regions like Africa there are dozens of conflicts and hatred between tribes and ethnic groups. Any foreigners are scammed and ripped off in most of Africa, Asia, The mIddle East. They charge you double/ttriple for everything. In Islamic countries people are attacked and killed for being from a different religion. A white woman cant travel anywhere in Africa alone. Its even risky for white men. Theres corruption, bandits, wars and tribal militia across Africa, Islamic terrorists are blowing people up. In Africa even the cops shake down tourists for money.
Right now in Iran women are being arrested ,thrashed, and killed for not wearing hijab.
Non- western countries dont have any rights at all, and women have no rights. Its important to remember most of the world is not woke, like the anglo-western countries are. They dont buy it. Even most African countries are anti-western liberal values, they are anti-LGBT, anti-feminist and anti-woke.

I've traveled across almost all of western Europe. There are "some" racist people where ever you go, but sweeping cultural racism is NONSENSE. You need to understand the situation when you travel to other countries. You can get away with bad attitudes and disrespect in America but try that in some foreign countries and you'll find out fast. I'd like to see exactly what happened that triggered these "racist incidents" because I bet these people weren't all that innocent to begin with.

My fiancé and I (both black) have been to Italy twice and didn’t experience anything like this, but we know it’s there and have heard stories. I also think we would’ve had a different experience had we traveled alone. The worst racism I experienced abroad was actually in China when I had to pass through the to get to Japan. Japan itself was fine but the racism and contempt I received from the Chinese I dealt with at the airport was enough to make me not ever want to visit that country for any reason. Not even white people have been that nakedly racist to my face.
It’s astounding how just being black and existing can arouse such visceral disdain in some people; and they don’t even know why they feel that way.

I would like to give a different opinion to this video. As a black european, my favorite country in Europe is Italy. I live in France but I have been to Italy 6 times. Everytime I go there, I am treated very well and very respectfully. I'm not saying that racism doesn't exist, but you can't take your personal experience and generalize it to all black people. You also need to look at some details about her experience. I'm going to say something that may hurt some of us but the truth is the truth. Us black people drive some of the stereotypes and negative images we show the world. We are not very good at giving a positive image compared to other ethnicities. Another thing about the lady in the video, she talks about the way people treat her, but she doesn't talk about her appearance. Italy is a conservative country, where people are elegant, dress nice with a conservative appearance. This girl goes to Italy with her bull nose ring and long dreadlocks, I'm not saying she shouldn't, but she shouldn't be surprised in addition to being black, she comes with this look that may not go well with most people there. To be honest, just based on appearance ( not looks), I would never date her, that's a different story but you get my point. It's too easy to point the finger at the way people treat you, but sometimes you have to look at yourself and wonder why you're getting so much negative reactions from people. I know a lot of black people who love Italy and who live in Italy. You can have a good or bad experience anywhere in the world. Same in America, Europe, Africa, Asia.... it doesn't matter. I have faced some type of discrimination on 2 occasions in Spain, but I still like to go there and honestly, 90% of my trips abroad have always been an incredible experience.

I am so glad you mentioned it. Appearance is everything. Even in the USA it's the same. It is unfair to judge someone by their appearance but who said the world is fair? I travel quite a bit and lived in Croatia, Switzerland and Spain. The black women I see complaining about racism (I'm not saying it doesn't exist because it is truly alive and well) are 200+ Lbs, sloppy dressed or looking like they came out of an Erykah Badu video. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these appearances and personally, I love the fashion and aesthetics of black urban fashion as I am from Brooklyn, but the reality is that it is not perceived well in Europe (nor in the USA frankly). It doesn't come off well and you will be judged. Often times black people go with the "this is me, 200 lbs, wearing shorts, green hair, loud as hell, etc. etc..... and you have to accept me the way I am"....well, no they don't! TBH, it happens in the USA as well but no one every mentions how someones "appearance" brings on negative judgement. The black European women I see and have met, are more conservative and dress more elegant in Europe. They are more put together. I see more urban fashion in London, but not the other countries I have been to. I have been to Italy at least 20 times, and lived in the North Eastern part for 1 year,, and never experienced racism. That said, I am not invalidating someone else's experience but sometimes people draw negative experiences by their appearance alone. Again, I am not saying this is right, just the way the world is.

I was physically assaulted from behind in Venice by someone I had no prior interaction with, was ignored by waiters at the Dolce & Gabbana restaurant (DG Martini) in Milan although we had reservations, and experienced more open aggression at the QC Termemilano Spa (by guests, not employees). The only place during that trip that was enjoyable was Lake Como. I didn’t experience this previously when I visited Rome so I’m not sure of this is more common in the North but hard pass on ever spending any more of my hard earned money in that country.

Some Italian guy was trying to hit on her Caucasian friends, but when they turned him down, he turned savage, threw water bottles at her, and told them to take their trash (her) off the beach. Later on, while walking on a sidewalk, some Italian man shielded his wife from her. There was more. But she's wrong about the south. Racism is still pretty bad here. Or did she not know about that judge from my state, who threw black school children into prison, not because they'd done anything wrong, no, she was "protecting" the Caucasian kids by getting black kids out of the schools.

It's complex. I lived there continuously for 5 years and still return to visit with my children who are Italian. I owned an albergo there with my ex-husband. Italians are ok. I fit in well with the Sephardic Jewish community there. Most of my friends were irish expats. However, italians are ethnocentric and can be xenophobic. Anyone Eastern European-looking, Nigerian looking or Brazillian-looking is going to suffer being discriminated against due to the rampant sex trafficking. There are a lot of prostitutes from the aforementioned categories. I'm fortunate enough to have a very distinctive look, so I'm not easy to place. Many years ago, I held an art meetup and many black American women came. Some of them were treated with pure disdain; one woman who is Carribean, dark and had braids had her credit card thrown at her by the restaurant downstairs. The other woman did not. In general, you will be crowned with the stereotypes of those you resemble most. So for the dummy black American men, rushing in to blame black women for their attitudes, it's not that simple. That same understanding that your asking parents to make their kids aware of, has a way of pigeonholing many of us. We're bombarded with all of this negativity and not given a proper balance, (ie. when you hear about Civil Rights, it's rare that you hear about the many occasions where white allies were punished physically, instead we turn it around and refer to them as having a white savior complex). The teaching/awareness has got to be done a lot better if you want a change or for things to work. Seeing yourself as a target, victim and undesirable often does more harm than good.

Hell, you don't need to go to Italy to experience racism or prejudice. Heck, you don't even need to live in the South. Just go to Salt Lake City, UT. I spent 4 mons there for military training. It sucked monkeyballs! I remember go to the local Walmart in and out of uniform. It was a totally different experience each time. I was barely tolerated in uniform and flat-out treated like shit out of uniform. Sorry she had to go to another country to experience 😔 that nonsense.

Most of the world is like the North side of Saint Louis, or Washington Park illnois
If you can survive there you can survive anywhere.
The other parts of the world is like the Projects or the Black Ghettos

She should've maybe visited Sicily region. Sicilians have the blood of African Moors in them. Guaranteed she would have a better experience there.

Lol 😆 it seems like the darker Europeans so call white are the most racist like an Italian that looks like an Arab or a Mexican or Latino (Sicilian) are more racist because I guess they have to prove they are not apart of Africa or black in a way like most people from India it seems most racist are the dark skinned ones

Racism is territorial. Where ever the majority lays, that’s where racism will be. The majority will always express racism because you are different from them.

A lot of places, its about "taking the hint". They will never change. Especially the part about high end products. They market to a certain groups and they aren't intetested in selling to anyone else. Money doesn't matter to them.

I am an black woman from the United States who lived in Italy while stationed in the military. On weekends and on holiday I did a great deal of solo traveling and was treated very well. I noticed that Italians treat foreigners better when they are polite and respect their culture. One summer, my parents even came to visit me and they had a fantastic time. My mother was an invalid who had mobility issues but she was treated like royalty. In my opinion, Italy is not as racist as the United States. I did notice that Italians dress better than most Americans. I was definitely treated better when I was well dressed. I also respected Italian culture and customs. I know Americans who were stationed in Italy in the past and have recently returned. These people all say that Italy is very welcoming to black people.
