A lot of people with pcos have extremely slow metabolism so eating fewer smaller meals will help. With a slow metabolism it takes longer for food to digest which leads to weight gain.

You can do it! I started birth control for my periods being really irregular at 16, then started gaining a lot of weight at 20. Never knew, but even back then it was probably PCOS! So even though it's rough, it's good you found out an actual reason at such a young age so that you can learn more about it. 💪🏻❤️

A balanced (Mediterranean) low carb diet (fish, meat, eggs with veggies, nuts and berries) and not too many meals a day, is what really works in my personal experience, though all people are different and should find what works for their individual body. For me it helped to do some moderate grain free keto (still with veggies and salads with meat, fish, eggs) the first weeks/months to get a kick start, then I changed to a more moderate low carb (still grain reduced). Stay away from highly processed foods and seed oils, because they drive inflammation. Grains do too. (I reduce grains and bake low carb buns with almond flour, walnuts, chia, coconut pulp + eggs) Extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil and MCT oil are ok, and avocados. And with less carbs, you need more protein and fat. If you don't get an inflammatory reaction from dairy (as I do, so I go no dairy), full fat dairy products are better than the fat reduced ones.
For me that only worked for the first 50 of the almost 100lbs I gained I less than 6 months. I didn’t eat too bad and regularly exercised before but cleaning up my diet and exercising with intent it only worked up to 50lbs. I’ve been struggling to loose more and have only maintained my weight. I don’t believe in exclusion diets. I want to be healthy without demonizing food groups. I will also say, my weight loss also stopped when I stopped taking birth control which was recommended for treatment of PCOS. So it could be that.

Too much carbs, and also gluten and dairy (dairy fats seems to be the culprit, maybe because of all the bovine hormones in it, and also high whey dairy products - though it seems some low fat cheeses in moderation is ok for me) worsen my PCOS symproms. I've tred birth control pills as well, but they really f***ed up my mental health, so I won't do that again. But I know it works for some people.
I was over 200 pounds and lost 26 pounds from treating my sleep apnea, fasting, eating better, and exercise. But now I cannot lose anymore weight and my doctor suspects PCOS. Hopefully I can find out for sure.

Metformin made me so sick and constantly violently hungry, like I could have a meal and have my hands shake from hunger 20 minutes later. I find Berberine way more soft on my body and it does work similarly. I never was extremely overweight but it takes a lot of work to maintain just a healthy weight, and PCOS isn't kind, you constantly feel low energy and tired. Been on birth control since my teen years, I'm currently 35. I wonder if there is ever going to be a better solution for this syndrome and some sort of prevention protocol, so many women are affected and there is still debate on what's causing it. I bet if men were affected by this, the solution would be found decades ago.
Felt the way when i was first diagnosed. Metformin made me blackout. Doctor said I had to keep taking it. I stopped taking it and felt so much better. What I find that works best for is swimming, journaling my food and exercise and stress factors as well.

It’s the other way around. PCOS causes obesity. I was not obese until one day I woke up and kept gaining weight too fast without any new changes to diet or exercise…it scared me, went to the doctor and diagnosed with PCOS.
Unfortunately that’s not true. This is a simplification but obesity can cause hormone problems which can cause PCOS. It is very far from the only way to cause PCOS, but it is a way. Also no, we are not born with PCOS. You can be more genetically predisposed to developing it, but no baby has PCOS. Yes that can play a huge role, but environment plays just as significant a role. All of this being said, research is still so young into PCOS, endo, etc. that I’m sure in the years to come our understanding of these diseases will be adjusted and refined. What I have just stated is the most common understanding backed up by solid science.

Girl, you GOTTA stop eating carbs and sugar. I struggled with weight gain since I hit puberty, when my PCOS flared up. At 40, I am FINALLY hormonally going back to normal and am slowly losing weight without trying too hard, I just walk too for exercise. I stopped eating carbs and sugar (as the insulin resistance from PCOS makes you hungry like crazy and your metabolism slow to a grinding halt.) I'm not a keto bible thumper, but it really, really helps.

Some generic brand ghee, lard, and butter for my fats, cheap cheese for my calcium, protien and fat. Generic psyllium husk tablets each meal to stay regular (and to stave off diarrhea from all that fat) . It's no more expensive than the way I used to eat.
i was on bc and spironolactone and i felt great! my new endo doc told me it was dangerous because of my age( 40's) and i should stop taking both and try metformin. I tried and gained 10lbs! I struggled to get it off. Now im still battling my weight, despite being a damn gym rat. Im so frustrated..i desperately tried a fat burner and gained 5 lbs! I hate this ish... im trying to keep it natural now..i take zinc, vitamin b12..vitamin d and magnesium..hopefully this will help

Does being on birth control (estradiol and progesterone) effect anything about losing weight with PCOS by following this type of diet? I'm 19 and while I am technically not overweight or obese based on my bmi, I think it would be helpful to lose just a bit of weight healthily and keep it off. Currently I have sat at this same weight even when I eat less calories or add more exercise. I don't eat very much food nowadays, but when I do eat it usually is healthy choices. Part of me thinks I will stay like this unless I really start busting my butt with exercise everyday or literally starve myself. It's like I am stuck as a pre-disposed weight that I can never lose from, only gain.
The contraceptive pill can cause insulin resistance which makes it really hard to lose weight. People with PCOS already have issues with insulin resistance.
Hormonal birth control can be absolutely terrible on your body, and cause lasting infertility issues that doctors obviously don't want to talk about. Starving yourself DOES NOT cause weight loss the way you might expect; if you don't eat enough, your body goes into "starvation mode" and actually hoards fat instead of using it as fuel. You want to get to a point where your body taps into those fat stores and burns them, which requires eating enough to get out of starvation mode. Check into intermittent fasting and keto, those are more natural ways of eating (think thousands of years ago, before grocery stores and fast-food) and our bodies are designed to utilize food more efficiently that way.
In my experience yes birth control helped me loose weight. As soon as I stopped the birth control I haven’t been able to loose anymore weight just maintain. I stopped birth control because it made me have high blood pressure. If I could I would have continued it.

The estrodiol in birth control will begin to take the androgens that is being converted to testosterone (what’s causing the PCOS) and convert them to estrogen. This will help diminish the male hormone which is one of the factors causing weight gain, insulin resistance and male pattern hair growth. The regular health risks with birth control still apply (ectopic pregnancy, blood clot, depression). Weight gain and acne however is more of a side effect that is very individual.
Its alot of trial and error to find the best birth control for your body as my cousin said. She had PCOS since she was roughly 13yrs old and use put on the pill which made her gains tons of weight. Until she was properly treated by the doctor and had personalised plan made for her did she see and good changes. It has many 15yrs plus and she now has 3 gorgeous kids and maintains a healthy weight. I also have PCOS but chose to not take any birth control as I have allergies and a general caution concerning medications after having multiple bad reactions to the medications. One great exercise I find is swimming as it is a full body exercise but doesn't put a lot of strain on the body as some other exercises do.My best advice concerning the food area is seek out a dietian or nutritionist that specialises in women health as they are better suited to helping you find a lifestyle that suits you. Using the BMI scale helps some but also get tested to see how you vitamin and hormone, liver, and thyroid levels are and use your own body measurements as this will give a better gauge to go by the is more personal as well. Also journaling your exercise and food intake and stress factors helps a lot as it allows you to find what are some potential triggers. Hope this helps😁

Based off the women in my family with PCOS, the one who is underweight has a different condition that needs addressing separately to the PCOS. Essentially, she can't efficiently digest food into nutrients, so she needs to consume higher calorie foods (like a body builder.)

Does being on birth control (estradiol and progesterone) effect anything about losing weight with PCOS by following this type of diet? I'm 19 and while I am technically not overweight or obese based on my bmi, I think it would be helpful to lose just a bit of weight healthily and keep it off. Currently I have sat at this same weight even when I eat less calories or add more exercise. I don't eat very much food nowadays, but when I do eat it usually is healthy choices. Part of me thinks I will stay like this unless I really start busting my butt with exercise everyday or literally starve myself. It's like I am stuck as a pre-disposed weight that I can never lose from, only gain.
The contraceptive pill can cause insulin resistance which makes it really hard to lose weight. People with PCOS already have issues with insulin resistance.
Hormonal birth control can be absolutely terrible on your body, and cause lasting infertility issues that doctors obviously don't want to talk about. Starving yourself DOES NOT cause weight loss the way you might expect; if you don't eat enough, your body goes into "starvation mode" and actually hoards fat instead of using it as fuel. You want to get to a point where your body taps into those fat stores and burns them, which requires eating enough to get out of starvation mode.
Check into intermittent fasting and keto, those are more natural ways of eating (think thousands of years ago, before grocery stores and fast-food) and our bodies are designed to utilize food more efficiently that way.
In my experience yes birth control helped me loose weight. As soon as I stopped the birth control I haven’t been able to loose anymore weight just maintain. I stopped birth control because it made me have high blood pressure. If I could I would have continued it.
@@lilascharmante2712The way birth control works for PCOS somewhat negates some of the concerns with birth control and it depends on the person. The estrodiol in birth control will begin to take the androgens that is being converted to testosterone (what’s causing the PCOS) and convert them to estrogen. This will help diminish the male hormone which is one of the factors causing weight gain, insulin resistance and male pattern hair growth.
The regular health risks with birth control still apply (ectopic pregnancy, blood clot, depression). Weight gain and acne however is more of a side effect that is very individual.
Its alot of trial and error to find the best birth control for your body as my cousin said. She had PCOS since she was roughly 13yrs old and use put on the pill which made her gains tons of weight. Until she was properly treated by the doctor and had personalised plan made for her did she see and good changes. It has many 15yrs plus and she now has 3 gorgeous kids and maintains a healthy weight. I also have PCOS but chose to not take any birth control as I have allergies and a general caution concerning medications after having multiple bad reactions to the medications.
One great exercise I find is swimming as it is a full body exercise but doesn't put a lot of strain on the body as some other exercises do.My best advice concerning the food area is seek out a dietian or nutritionist that specialises in women health as they are better suited to helping you find a lifestyle that suits you. Using the BMI scale helps some but also get tested to see how you vitamin and hormone, liver, and thyroid levels are and use your own body measurements as this will give a better gauge to go by the is more personal as well. Also journaling your exercise and food intake and stress factors helps a lot as it allows you to find what are some potential triggers. Hope this helps😁

■ Salt

*Limit to very small servings:*
■ Dark green vegetables (lowest carbs)
■ Dairy (no added sugars)
*Do not eat:*
■ Grains, oats, breads, pasties, rice
■ Alcohol, sugary drinks, fruit juices
■ Candies, sweets, foods with added sugar
■ Bright vegetables
■ Fruits
■ Seed oils
If you keep your total carbohydrates to below 20g per day, you will reverse your PCOS and endometriosis in about a year.
You will see huge progress in about three months.
Just remember that you will probably experience sugar withdrawals for the first week or two.
Expect headaches, low energy, intense cravings, mood swings, etc (it's like trying to quit smoking or drinking caffeine).
You will also probably get diarrhea for a week or so if you don't normally eat much animal fat.
This happens because your gall bladder is out of shape.
It will eventually adjust and make more bile and the diarrhea will pass.

Based off the women in my family with PCOS, the one who is underweight has a different condition that needs addressing separately to the PCOS. Essentially, she can't efficiently digest food into nutrients, so she needs to consume higher calorie foods (like a body builder.)
Well, feeling how it all began to shrink and eventually disappear within 2 months was so liberating. I followed the steps I mentioned, and within the first 2 weeks the bloating was gone. I simply go'ogled Tilly Strankten's Guide and it's like I hit the feel-good reset button lol.

I appreciate your mention of deliberate food addiction in the US; it's one of the main reasons I'm completely against socialized healthcare. There's zero governmental incentive for Americans to take care of themselves physically (it's the opposite, actually...the FDA is fine with the literal garbage that's sold as "food"), yet we're all supposed to "share" healthcare costs? No thank you, I'd rather make personal decisions about my own health and then pay for my own medical needs as they arrive. Sadly, the whole system is intentionally screwed.
I'm wondering how long I've had PCOS; my weird menstrual issues cropped up only recently, and I was diagnosed soon after, but I've had "chronic fatigue" and hormonal struggles since I was a teenager. Thanks for your suggestions!
