      And catchers are normally big, plodding dudes. I hit 3 of them in my playing time. One was high school, two were single A. I was out 2 of those and only knocked one of them back. At 165lbs, I didn't have the momentum that the 240lb specimens who play in the majors have. I was an emergency catcher(I caught until high school when I was switched to short) and fortunately none of my games included a collision. I probably would have just stepped aside.

      But it’s kinda no point.. well I guess it depends on arm length. If you have above average length arms like (74”), one could grab a ball and do a tag anywhere near home plate without covering it. At least how I am imagining it in my mind and myself playing the position. Because fucked getting rocked like literally all of these clips haha

    • @staidenofanarchy
      @staidenofanarchy 3 роки тому +1

      @@codyferrell1031 Up until the Posey play, you were taught to block the plate to prevent the runner getting a hand in. Look at a lot of these plays, the catcher is literally sitting on home plate and there's nowhere to go but right through him, that was the best strategy to make absolutely damn sure that run wasn't scoring. With the new rule, they do essentially what you described.
      I remember I was taught to literally put my butt on top of the plate and brace myself, because if you can see the train on the tracks it's already too late to get off lol.

    • @billny33
      @billny33 2 роки тому

      @@codyferrell1031 I think the other thing to consider is if you didn't really try to block the plate then the runner might see that and decide he can get under the tag with a feet first slide and if you can't get that glove low when you reach for the runner (and at that point it depends on your position and the angle he takes and all kinds of other variables, when/where the ball gets there etc), he probably gets his feet in. So you might avoid the pain but then your unwillingness to sacrifice the body could lead to giving up that run. Its quite a dangerous game you play at that point, literally and figuratively. But if you don't want to piss off your coach or any of your teammates its block the plate and hope for the best. Brutal, I know.

    That hit at 1:15 was the 1970 all star game. Pete rose fractured ray fosse’s shoulder. He never played in an all star game again and struggled with injuries for the next several years before retiring. Apparently his shoulder didn’t heal properly and caused him pain for the rest of his career.

    • @alan30189
      @alan30189 5 років тому +8

      Yep, and many criticized Rose for that hit, since it was an "exhibition game." Well, since it was an exhibition game, Fosse should have gotten the hell out of the way and he would have never gotten hurt. He knew how Rose plays.
      I had someone try a "Pete Rose" on me when playing softball, years ago. I was the catcher and saw this guy bearing down in my peripheral vision as I waited for the ball. He was dead meat by six feet, and I was able to brace myself and let him have it, leaning into him hard. We both went flying, but I am sure he got the raw end of the deal, since I was 6'5" and about 210lbs at the time. He was out by a mile. I was not hurt at all.

    There's a big difference between running into the catcher because he's completely blocking the plate and you have no where to go to try and score and going out of your way to injure the catcher so you can go back to home plate after the catcher was taken out to be safe. Nyger Morgan would have been safe had he slid. Mark Teixeira would have been safe had he slid. Cousins would have been safe had he slid to the back of home plate. All of these instances and others shown in here, the runner had already decided that the only way they would be safe was if they deliberately tried to injure the catcher and go back to home plate after the collision. If the players were only colliding with the catcher when they had no where to go, the rule change would not have occurred. But the fact is that too many were deliberately trying to injure the catchers and the rule change had to happen. Go ahead and blame the "bleeding-hearts," "pussies," "liberals,"... and who ever else. The people responsible for this rule change were all the players who were deliberately trying to injure the catcher when a collision was completely unnecessary.

      I see your point, but you have to see that runners have to committ no matter what. How are they supposed to tell if the ball is close or not??

    • @seansiquig
      @seansiquig 5 років тому +22

      CocoJones397 i don’t think you see his point... “committing” doesn’t mean the runner must run into the catchers, just as the 1st commenter said- runners can still try their hardest to get to home base by sliding. but intentionally running into the catcher at these speeds to try and mess up their catch and to get base is not commitment, but unsportsmanlike and can lead to bad injuries.

    Probably an unpopular opinion, but seeing this compilation really made me realize that this play doesn't need to be legal for the game of baseball to be great.
    First of all, this play was a rare one. The average MLB baseball game didn't have a home plate collision. By making it illegal, you aren't getting rid of a huge part of the game.
    Secondly, look at how many of the players in this video got hurt. Injuries suck, and this play caused a bunch of them. I'd rather see a great game of baseball with both teams at 100% than have a great catcher gone for the season because of one cool looking play.
    These plays are fun to watch, but they were rare and it wasn't so fun that it was worth losing players for the season. Baseball has not only survived, but flourished without the rule and it will continue to do so. Remember Chris Coghlan's dive over Yadier Molina? That play would have never happened if this rule still was in place. The game changes, but it's still the same game at the core. This play hasn't and won't ruin baseball.

    I think if the catcher is blocking the plate once they get the ball, the runner should not be forced to slide into a tag, they should be allowed to try and go through the catcher. The Posey play is a collision play that has no place in baseball, the runner had the entire plate to slide into but chose to go after Posey. Can't blame anything on Posey.

      New mlb rules do not outlaw blocking the plate as long as the catcher has possession of the ball, or is in the process of fielding the ball. In these cases, a base runner can still collide with the catcher if it is unavoidable. It is up to the umpires judgement. If a catcher has possession and still blocks the plate, the runner can still collide if it judged as unavoidable.

    I’d just like to take a second to thank my best catcher of all time, Bruce Stancel. He was my catcher but he also played center field and he was our “Wild thing.” I once saw him wildly and uncontrollably throw a ball from center field over the backstop over 350-feet away [at the age of 16]. And as a catcher, he was fearless. He was a golden glove boxer and he had no fear, especially when it came to standing on top of the plate with a runner coming home. I was a good pitcher, but Bruce was a great catcher. Christ, I miss those days…back when boys were men and men were men.

    The comments on here blaming Posey for getting hurt and "changing the game", make no sense to me. As a former minor league catcher, I took my share of hits as well as dishing out punishments to runners. If you notice as you watch these plays, most collisions could/would be avoided if the runner slides in. Many collisions are unnecessary. Many times the runner would've been safe if they'd attempted to slide instead of throwing themselves into the catcher. I have to ask, why is this play only allowed at home? Think about it....the closest play similar to this is the attempt to break up the double play at second base. Even then, the runner must attempt to slide. But then, people really only watch NASCAR to see the wrecks. I loved to catch and I still love the game. I'm elderly and retired now, but the best baseball is still played at the neighborhood park. The place where dreams begin.

Just got 250 lb dudes getting a 87 foot runway to build up steam and crash into the catcher and see if he can hold on to the ball or not. A lot of times the catchers are on their knees too or are just receiving the ball so they are not able to fully see when the collision is coming. Thankfully plays at the plate are rare but when they happened it was like a sanctioned car crash for the catcher and for the runner it was crash into him as hard as you can and see if you can get him to drop the ball.

Pete Rose ruined Ray Fosses's career and hits like these put Buster Posey in a hospital. Having a catcher leave a path to the plate challenges both the runner and the catcher. I agree 100%. It's unsportsmanlike in every sense of the term and just bloodsport for dipshit "fans".. Never should have been allowed from the get go and as you can see the main people who argue about it being a part of the game have probably never played it in the first place. I've been a player, a manager, an umpire, and a league official, and I can tell you that no where in the rule books does it explicitly permit dropping your shoulder and blowing up defenseless players because you had no other options.

      Same with blood thirsty hockey fans. None have played the sport, most can't even skate. None would last a shift in the NHL.

    This was one of my favorite parts of the game both as a catcher and a base runner, too bad it's no longer allowed. MMA/boxing is gonna be the only fun sport soon enough.

      Because they play baseball lol and they don’t have to block the plate that’s their own fault if they get blasted.

      @@kyleburgess780 The runners also don't have to lower their shoulder and go in like a linebacker. Many of these the runner don'r even try for the plate, they're aiming for the catcher to try to get him to drop the ball.

      177SCmaro good. Makes it more interesting. Again, don’t block the plate and you won’t get trucked.

    I miss baseball being a contact sport. I played catcher all through little league and high school and college ball. Loved blocking the plate.

    Dear MLB, bring this back. You've created an entire generation, or possibly 3, of kids thinking they're entitled to being 100% safe at home and catchers who feel like they have a right to be mad when they get trucked. Backstops have to be the toughest guy on the field. It takes guts to play backstop. If you don't have the fortitude to take the shot, go play the outfield.

    What I noticed on the posey one is that posey is way in front of home plate and cousins went out of the baseline to ram into posey. And, all these comments about posey ruining the game is bull shit, if u think he stood on homeplate, watch the replay.

    I love pretty much everything about baseball but damn it took an embarrassingly long time to change the rules to stop this from being allowed. I mean damn it doesn't take a genius to see how vulnerable these catchers are in these situations. And the runners are literally just trying to murder the catchers every single time. They were incentivised to do as much damage as possible and you can see it every time.
    Besides, the new slides are just as exciting anyways.

      If the catcher is blocking the plat the runner has the right to run him over. It's old school hard baseball. This isn't tennis.
