What I found fascinating about this movie is that in a way during the whole movie, he wasn’t just trying to convince the girls, but he was trying to convince himself that there was nothing out there. At the end of movie, you could see the fear in him of the what could await him in the afterlife.
No, he wasn't trying to convince anyone. He was planning to add both or one of them to his "prophets" collection. He literally tries to sound smart or righteous (i blame the writing), but turns out, he's just a weirdo. Yea sure he was afraid of God when he's dying, which he didn't expect. Like others who were afraid of God (the porn girl, the protagonist who has a hidden birth control, etc.). Movie was ass. 👎
Paxton did not make it out of the house. At the time the butterfly descended on her hand, her phone screen displayed "no signal" indicating she was still in the house. The resurrection of Barnes, the escape, and the butterfly were all hallucinations
1:52 He didn’t invite them over with the promise of pie, he invited them over for “more information about their religion”. Pie was offered, after they were already there. It was just a way to make them feel at ease. He said his “wife” was baking a pie… The prophet never offered them a slice of pie. The prophet sat the pie on the table, ate a handful of it and died. She fell face first into the pie, not onto the floor.
There were some twists. He used religious beliefs to manipulate and break people down and capture them. He had multiple "wives" and got them the same way as two representatives of JCLDS. Maybe he wanted to make a fool of them and mock them saying that all religions are likened to board games and he is the winner.
Watched it and yeah the “ how do you feel about polygamy?” Question and then when the missionary justify it as “necessary for the time to help build the religion” really hits different by the end
Why was sister Paxon it so smart all of a sudden she act so naïve or stupid but all of a sudden she knew all the clues why she didn’t say nothing before about his wet hair
Loved it. It’s not that there isn’t a being out there, but he doesn’t control our moves. We do, and unfortunately we try to control each other by using our beliefs against each other. The is the downside of having free will
What a waste of a 10/10 movie. If they just changed the last 2 mins into Hugh not just being a Scooby-Doo villain and actually found real proof of an ancient original religion and its turned out to be some form of a old God and it was terrifying BUT REAL. It would have changed the ENTIRE movie. Hugh would get a Oscar for acting like a complete psycho but in reality he was trying to convert the girls so they don't waste their lives in search for a false God when he shows them the truth of the creation. They set the movie up so incredibly well and dropped the ball harder than ANY movie i have ever seen.
It was actually a good ending, because the meaning of the whole movie was not about him trying to convince the girls, but in trying to convince himself that there was no true religion, and at the end he was still afraid of what awaited for him after death as he was dying.
By the end of the movie it feels like the message is that Mormonism is more true than atheism, being that the atheist is portrayed as a psychopath, narcissistic, serial killer, who doesn’t even succeed in making them lose their faith. This movie is Dumb.
Honestly the high reviews must be bought. I wish I could get my money back! The movie plot was all over the place with Judaism being the one true religion, but not honing in on why. Lots of Misinformation, they should have hired someone that knew more about religions. For example, Zoroastrianism is considered to be the world's first monotheistic religion not Judaism. Judaism was developed 500 years after Christianity. The Israelites should have been mentioned if the producers we’re going down that route. I also needed more horror. The producers had the ability to really make this a good film but failed miserably.
Belief is a vague assumption about something you are not quite sure of, and people have used this for a fundamental justification to do disturbing acts against humanity. Would it be too much to ask that you believe in more certain things, like the right to practice a religion without danger and damage to those who exactly want to practice the right not to believe, and have chosen to know what is facts and not ancient books with absolutely nothing to prove and accept the evidence given point at myth to be the only reasonable conclusion.
The characters one true religion? He believes in the three M's. Misunderstanding, misrepresenting and misinterpretation. His character has what I like to call "headline arguments" they sound incredibly flashy and like they could really change your mind but when you actually read the article you realize it's just a bunch of misleading bullshit. His arguments are some of the most played out, boring arguments against Christianity. The only kind of mind this guy blows are people who have never taken the time to actually look into the faith.
I watched this movie with my best friend who is former mormon and there is so much that the audience misses if they’re not knowledgeable in Mormonism. For instance, when he says “you’re welcome to leave at anytime” is a common saying that members who question the teachings are told. But if you leave then you’re giving in to satan and will be in outer darkness without your family in the afterlife. I was so glad to have her there with me to help me understand it since I was born and raised a non-believer.
Sorry to hear that. I've been an active member for 30 years and have never heard anything like going to outer darkness for leaving the church. it's a pretty messed up thing to say to your friend. I've always been taught and believe that even though God does promise blessings for those who follow his guidance, that we aren't to judge those who don't share our beliefs as we don't know their hearts or what we would do in their situation.
Are you sure you’re talking about the same movie? There was a butterfly in the ceiling light and one at the end on the blonde’s finger in his back yard.
The one true religion is astronomy and astrology, this is where every religion originates from, Prisca Theologia. The only God you know is just a retelling g of the sun's ecliptic path and the star signs associated with the zodiac.
@BullyMaguire4ever I don't have beliefs, I have things I know according to facts and evidence. Only the sun dies for three days and rises again. Virgo is the woman clothed in the sun. The dragon with bear feet that sweeps one third of the stars is Draco and Ursa Minor. The beast that torments humanity for 5 months is Scorpio. Judgement day is the autumn equinox. Noah's Ark is Argo Navis. I could go on and on. The bible is astrology, not literal history, every character is a personification, fictional not real.

The movie saying Jesus' resurrection is fake.. it was just a double..
Oh shut up @konghere

Nah Barnes wasn’t a hallucination . . .
The birth control being ripped out of Sister B. was such a plot twist !!!!! Sister P. Finding out this girl was a fake is crazy
There is no way you watched this movie and got so much wrong within the plot and actions in the film.
Right😂

More people will come if they think there will be punch and pie.

Because it’s bad writing.
Because you don't show people how smart you really are. No one can't read you like the way the pyscho was doing with her sister/friend.

He's not an atheist. Please use context clues. The whole movie he talks about finding the one true religion that everything is copying from.
