Public Land Bull Elk Hunt - 7x7 DOWN!!!

  • Elk hunting on public land. There's no greater reward when it comes to big game hunting than taking a mature animal, DIY style, on public land - especially a big bull elk.
    Overcoming challenges in the form of other hunters, pressured game, and the weather seemed to be the common theme on this particular hunt.
    Ty was acting as a first time cameraman and bonafide spotter as Erik's role shifted to a little self filming POV.
    They scouted, strategized, and in the end, the hard work paid off.
    They two put in the necessary work to be successful as sometimes "going hard in the paint sucks."
    Watch the 6.5 PRC coupled with the Hornady 147 gr eld-x do work!

    I was thinking about buying a 6.5 prc until I watched this. This single video changed my mind. Like you said it's all about shot placement, well you put 4 in there before it went down. Most times I'm only lucky enough to get off one shot in the thick timber. I'll stick with something a little bigger, maybe 300 prc. Awesome bull though, glad you got it!

    • @mthompson
      @mthompson 4 роки тому +5

      Not saying you're wrong...but you can't judge a cartridge by watching 2-3 questionable looking shots and a 4th good shot.

    • @zacharyharwell351
      @zacharyharwell351 4 роки тому +1

      I was going to say, given how clear that fourth shot was in delivering the energy, the other three didn't even seem to hit to my eyes; you'd think even hitting a shallow spot (flesh wise) would show some sort of wave for the energy transfer.
      I personally think he rushed the first three and took his time on the fourth when he realized it wasn't running and he missed the first three. I have other issues with that, but that is another issue to discuss.
      ADDITION: That said, round choice is also about comfort to a degree; want a more assured ethical kill? Go for that 300; I myself am looking at making a 300 RUM setup soon here

      22 LR is the most deadly firearm in the world...why?.....Shot placement.... for the last three years I have used nothing but .223 for very large bodied mule deer and I'm 100% confident in it........I know this is elk and I wouldnt dare use a .223 on elk, however, if you watch close the blood starts to seep through on the hind quarters and later part of the guts....
      Its all about shot placement....

      @@mthompson Well, he said in a previous comment that the 1st and 4th shots were nearly touching right behind the shoulder. So...the 1st shot didn't do what the 4th shot did, so what does that tell you? A .30cal would've done the deed on the 1st shot.

    Easy to arm chair quarterback, but I do believe it's a legitimate statement that the 6.5 is in the bottom end of an elk cartridge. And that it relies on high speed. Once it loses its speed, it become well under gunned for big bulls. I don't just pull this out of my butt, but rather following Nathan Foster, of New Zealand, standards.
    Bullet weight and cal to game body weight with bullet design (reactive)
    I believe a lot of game is lost due failing to respect these 3 foundations- Bullet weight to game weight, bullet design to game body type- including unforseen gusts of wind, causing meat/vital shots and 3rd caliber. You must know your minimum impact velocity.
    Long shots really should be video'd along with an experienced spotter.
    Despite saying all this, great video and congratulations on a great bull. You guys, for what it's worth, are liget. Great video!

      @MuleyFreak  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for all the recent comments James! We try to learn multiple calibers and test a wide range. We use Hornady ammo and have a couple podcasts with Seth Swerczek about impact velocity, what it takes to kill an animal, shot placement and a couple different topics. You might enjoy listening to those as well since you seem to know quite a lot and have a interest in different calibers. Glad you’re enjoying the videos! Growing up on the Western Slope of Colorado in the 70s I seen a lot deer and elk killed by a lot of different calibers, ranges, etc....it is all shot placement. You were putting them in there. @@MuleyFreak Agreed on shot placement and elk being tough critters. Since you've killed more elk than I can ever dream of, therefore I'll respect your opinion on this. I'm more Monday morning quarterbacking, having killed a few with my 300 WSM (which have all dropped with one well placed shot) and having seen a bunch of videos with 6.5 PRC hits. Clearly with no practical experience I can't make the apples to apples comparison that you can but as an observation it seems to take a few more rounds in the vitals with the 6.5 PRC unless of course you get some CNS type hit. Man these comments are too good. If he had said he was shooting a 300 wm, 7 mag, 28 nos, etc. Everyone would be saying “wow it’s crazy how tough elk are!” Also, if hornady accidentally loaded ELDM’s in precision hunter ammo, most people would never know from a terminal perspective. The 6.5mm cartridges have been killing animals much larger than elk for generations. Using this cartridge at 300 yards is a more than capable elk cartridge. Are there “better” ones? I guess. Shot placement and bullet selection well outweigh caliber. I’d rather hit an elk in the vitals with a 100 grain partition out of a .243 than gut rip with a 338 wm.
