    Firewatch not having any jumpscares makes it even more terrifying. Youre kinda expecting the figure to jump out and scare you the entire game, but he doesnt. Ned is just trying to hide, likr henry and Delilah are. In a way, they needed to meet ned so they didnt end up like him

    • @OnePerDay
      @OnePerDay  Місяць тому +6

      Yeah good point, the whole game is like its building up to a jumpscare that never happens yet you are always expecting it and I think that is an interesting take that if they didn't discover Ned they would end up the way he did, I never though about it that way

    What I love so much about Firewatch is the fact that you choose your dialogue while you’re walking. It feels like you’re having a conversation in realtime, feels more realistic. Can you imagine a new Bethesda game where there’s no awkward standing and staring to each other? Whenever there’s a dialogue, you have to respond within 5 seconds, otherwise the other character will remember that and bring that up in the future?

      100% agree, Firewatch absolutely perfected the dialogue system and it heavily carries the game, with most games where dialogue is boring and something you skip through, I intentionally try to get as many dialogue interactions as possible because its so well written and really nicely designed and it feels really human unlike other speech systems in games especially Bethesda games which you also mentioned. Any future story driven game should definitely take inspiration from Firewatch

    Both Ironbark look out and Firewatch are amazing games but I’ve always personally found Ironbark to be more realistic when it comes to the actual job of a firewatch

    • @OnePerDay
      @OnePerDay  Місяць тому +4

      Fair enough, Ironbark is more grounded in reality as its a horror game and has you actually doing the job like filling out the weather reports each day and the log fire, cooking etc while Firewatch is more focused on the story with the actual job taking more of a background role but both are amazing in what they do and take the same concept in 2 totally amazing directions

    • @OnePerDay
      @OnePerDay  Місяць тому +1

      Yeah and I hope that feeling was captured in the video, that's probably the most interesting part of the game is how scary you trick yourself into thinking the game is because of the fear of the unknown and that was one of the most memorable parts of the game (at least for me)

    This is very good video, thanks man! The best thing that Fears to Fathom does is not knowing when or what will happen to you. Because everything we do is daily work. When some games tell you to do this, you know that something will happen to you when you go there. But even while peeing in F2F, something can happen to you. F2F uses human emotions very well.

    • @OnePerDay
      @OnePerDay  Місяць тому +2

      Yes it really keeps you on your toes and every little interaction in the game is 10x scarier than it actually is because of how much your brain tricks you into being scared, only the last 1/3 of the game contains any of the main jumpscares/horror stuff etc and the other 2/3 is just incredible atmosphere and amazing build up

    Literally my only problem with Fears To Fathom is, that its full of pointlessly loud sound effects at jumpscares, and when someone is chasing you, its like a cheap way to make something scary, and i don't think the game actually needs it, since the atmosphere is already so scary, you think twice before doing anything. I think hearing footsteps rapidly aproaching you would be actually scarier, than using cheap loud sound effects, just to make you scared.

    ahhh i have so many thoughts! firstly, very interesting comparison! we need more games about fire watch. secondly, it’s relatable to me about first play through of firewatch. i was scared of everything, although the game showed its comfort with all appearance. it has one important to me thing in common with fears to fathom- fear of being alone. alone on the tower, alone with suspicious things that people don’t believe in. plus fear of the unknown. your own thoughts either scare you more, or don’t know what to assume. sooo, love this atmosphere!

    "The fear all disappears on the second playthrough".
    What I would give for an immersive sim forest ranger game, with procedurally driven animals, people, and cryptids/supernatural effects.
    You can play out over and over, never knowing if those missing people are just lost, attacked by some crazy person, or take by a cryptid. You won't know if the signs of a creature attack was because people left food out, a rabid animal, or a creature not meant for our world.

    I think the main reason so a lot of people didn't like how firewatch ended is because they didn't replay it after the first go around. When you're first playing and you have no idea where the story is going, it feels as though the story drops into nothing, but on the second playthrough, you realize just how clever the misdirection is. The game always provides a second explanation for what could be happening whenever henry encounters something. It's henry and delilah who insist and double down on the conspiracy theories. The game does a lot to hint that this is all in their heads. It's such a cool take that looks into how our minds can make stories for themselves when in isolation. But like I said, it's only really obvious on a second playthrough, so a lot of people don't get to see that and feel a bit disappointed with the big twist being "and none of it was real!!!" Which I can understand, seeing as that's a trope that is so rarely executed well.

    • @OnePerDay
      @OnePerDay  15 днів тому +1

      Yeah a second playthrough is really interesting as it feels like a different game even though the story is the same, and it is interesting how the mind plays tricks and makes stories and it makes you wonder whether real life fire lookouts experience similar things maybe not as extreme as in firewatch though

      Yes the soundtrack is so good and the majority of the music used in the video was from Firewatch with the others being from fears to fathom, I will definitely look into games similar to Firewatch for my next video essay and see if theres any games good enough for a video essay, do you know any games similar to Firewatch that I could get started with?

    There is an another game known as do you copy which was released around 2017-18 and f2f il and do you copy look ridiculously similar. No one has covered their comparison online till now but i hope that you make one on that.

      I think that would definitely be an interesting thing to look into however I may do that in a few months time as it may be too repetitive or stale to do 2 very similar videos right after each other

    FTF if you want aesthetic ambience while FW for artstyle. I only played FTF. I might try FW.
