When a measuring device explicitly tells you to use something else if you want accurate measurements, its not worth 80 cents, let alone 80 bucks.
Lol yeah when I heard that, that was the final nail in the coffin for this gadget... not that I was interested in it after James' review anyway.
Ironic that!
Even the fanciest laser measurer is going to be off, usually people use these kinds of things for estimate or a ballpark figure.
it's a consumer product show casing technology and beauty, what do you want? it's not intended for the job site, the manufacturer knows that. if you want something for the job site, get a damn tape measure or invest in highly accurate survey tools. The target market is the wealthy, techy or hell even the general population that need to get a general measurement of something stupid. It's a very similar market to the iphone's LIDAR sensor. hell the manual even stating that the standby time is in the THOUSANDS of hours (read years) is indicative of that fact. they know someone is going to buy it use it a few times then put it in their desk, not to be used again for a few years when they need to move a painting.
@@TheObsesedAnimeFreaks its form over function, a solution to a problem that doesn't exist and is therefore useless, pointless, frivolous and wasteful.
80 dollars... yeah, I'd rather fill my house with tape measures, since I seem to lose them, so I can always find one.
And for $80, you could do exactly that. Hit the right flea market and you could even do that with brand-name ones.
2 years later and I still can't find mine lol I blame my wife 🧙♂️
If this ain’t true 😂
090⁰⁰0⁰⁰⁰ that ⁰⁰ or ⁰o⁰
Yeah, someday I'm going to find all my lost tape measures and all my spare socks in one big pile somewhere.
The error in these due to human inability to follow a straight line is too high.
Even with tape measure people still measure at an angle or the line is bent and/or saggy.
This should have a feature which compensates for crooked measurement, otherwise makes no sense.
Same or more work than using tape measure too.
Yes. He was rolling that thing all over the place...never a straight line.
I was going to say that it not only needs to be straight but it also needs to be parallel, both of which are pretty hard to do alone let alone both at the same time.
Exactly, we’ll said 👍
hockeyhacker97 if it’s parallel it is straight
It should also account for the special relativistic differences between two bodies of mass, where the dimensions expand and contract, thus giving results from the perspective of the destination, but not the source.
Can we all appreciate how much effort and time this man spends to make these vids
and even sometimes when it takes him a couple of months to finish a video because "it wasn't turning out as good as he wanted it to be"
that's dedication right there 👌
Yeah he does take his work seriously without being boring. open minded where I would see a certain product and say why in the hell does that exist, he'll take it seriously and give it an honest review, even if it is a gag item.
You forgot how much money he has sitting in his gadget graveyard.
And does a very good job of it. Definitely a pleasant experience. Some that I’ve watched are horrendous
Honestly I noticed it when he was doing the Mail in Videos and still took a week for a quick video
I want to see someone build a house just using the measure king
Probably something like this ua-cam.com/video/ZUgUOYjXOXE/v-deo.html
@@autodecapitation Lmao, You made my day
LMAO that video
Google "inventor bloody stupid Johnson".
All I have to say is fuck
This looks like a really well made stupid idea.
A good solution in search of a problem
The concept isn’t bad, actually. I can see it being useful in many situations. There would be tons of pros, if it was less luxurious and a lot cheaper
For irregular shaped objects it’s not bad.
@@JoeARedHawk275 but compare it to a .15 cent paper tape.
If im not mistaken it would be a much better product if it was a square, or had at least one 90 degree corner for the starting point. Then you dont need to mess around with adding radius or diameter, just pivot the tool so the starting corner goes right to where you want to start/stop.
The perfect solution for a problem that doesn’t exist.
Terrible solution for a problem that doesn't exist.
If it’s not broken don’t fix it
I was looking into connecting my PC via an ethernet cable, so I could enjoy full-duplex communication with a faster speed. I would have to measure multiple walls and do additions on a notepad just to estimate the length of cable I would need. Just rolling a device like this across my walls would be massively easier and I wouldn't have to leave pencil mark everywhere just to make a simple estimate.
I don’t trust computers
I can see the commerical now with some mom-bobbed woman on a struggle bus with a tape measure.
"Tired of getting tangled and cut up in those old dangerous tape measures?"
She's like these are designed by people who don't use tape measures. you have to eyeball where your termination is. I use a tape measure for work, these things look like if they would just to be a problem.
Stanley FatMax is the best imo
id never trust a digital tape measure ! give me good old fashioned tried and tested METRIC tape measure
also with physical tape its a rigid edge so its easier to eyeball your measurement is in a straight line and not weaving about like the digital roller style ones can, ALSO with a rigid physical tape u can extend the tape lean over to the otherside of some roof timber to measure from there to where u are ,cant to anything with such a device like this ,seems more of a gimmick gadget than any tradesman would use
There's no need to revolutionize the tape measure, it's like making a shovel that does something gimmicky and entirely cant be used if the battery is dead.
@@apocalypse487 that's exactly the one I use. I don't ever have to worry about charging it, or getting it wet.
As soon as I saw that packaging I had a strong feeling it was going to be worthless. This to me feels like another tech company's over-priced, over-engineered solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
Sounds like my BMW!
exactly. It looks like a fashion statement for idiots who want to part with their money
I was thinking I have never had packing like that for any of my tools.
Usually, that statement holds true. There are a few time where the tool quality and its function are worth it and the company does provide a quality container for it as well. I can think of two companies in the tool business where that applies. The first being Lie-Nielsen Toolworks. They took the designs of the old Stanely tools and improved on them. Quality tools that if properly taken care of, can be handed down for several generations. www.lie-nielsen.com/
The second is Bridge City Tool Works. bridgecitytools.com/ Their tools are mostly for measuring and layout, Yes, they are pricey. But the accuracy and quality are worth the investment if you do any work where accurate measurements are critical. Their tools also used to feature cocobolo handles which were very nice. Sadly the owner developed an allergic reaction to the wood dust and had to discontinue using it.
This is what you get when art school rejects think they are suddenly engineers. Expensive paper weights...
Sometimes old school and "analog" are just better. There is almost zero use for this thing. Use a tape measure.
Yeah, not everything needs to be high tech!
Happy I'm not the only one that was thinking to myself this is the stupidest thing I've ever seen in my life.... But good quality video review
As long as it works there's a use for it.
Reminds me of electrical vernier callipers. The LCD display amongst other things can break, it runs on battery and yeah reading the measurement off a display is quicker. ...but I do know how to read the measurement. This is better in the same way that a digital clock is better than analog clock. Which is not much, if at all
@@Josh-oc7ib I'll sell you a cup with no bottom.... It works the water spills... Must be useful
These would however be good for measuring something like circumference of an irregular object, like a tree trunk or a large stone
Use a string or multiple strings then measure the length of the string.
Feel this would be less accurate than the stri g method due to people unable to measure in a straight line.
You would have to take off the bark first, effectively girdling and killing the tree. Honestly this isn't worth it.
A loggers tape measures circumstances
a soft tape measure would still be a better choice.
just use those fabric tape measures tailors use
If a contractor came in my house using one of those his ass is gone.
"In the case of accuracy, please use other measuring tools to proofread the values." - That says it all. A tape measure that has a disclaimer about its accuracy isn't worth spit.
In all fairness, the Apple Measure app was measuring the outside of the white part of the picture, not the outside of the actual black frame. So if the frame is 3/4" on each side, that's the 1 1/2"-ish you're missing to get from 61 to 62.75.
Yeah he makes a lot of mistakes like that and a lot of his videos I've noticed. Like at 2:30 he says that the measure King is off by a half an inch but if you watch the laser starts at about a half an inch past the beginning of the yellow tape measure.
@@R-Lee- Human error is a problem though. Good devices take that into account.
In all fairness, apple sucks
How is that "in fairness" or one of his mistakes? The app is suppose to measure things. Its not his fault the app can't differentiate. The tape measure he used did.
The point was he was trying to measure the picture end-to-end, and the app auto-selected the area and presented the incorrect value. using that mode, there is no option to get it to include the outside edge.
it's a failure of the app in its purpose and it happened because it is a lot easier to identify the contrasting white edge and it arbitrarily chose what to measure, with no option to select otherwise.
NB: this is for that mode of the app, I do know that it allows you to pick points in space, but that is fairly inaccurate even if it is just because of how big the damn dots are
In measuring, accuracy is crucial. Close means fail.
That's actually a lot more impressive than I thought it would be. The iPhone app, I mean.
Like other people have said, I think the error in the rollova is almost entirely due to human error and the inability to follow a perfectly straight and perpendicular line.
Just a small error side to side while rolling the rollova could easily add up quickly.
Even comparing it to a normal tape measure, if you don't measure it from the EXACT same 2 spots as the tape measure, it's going to be different.
I agree particular his measurement of the paper! He did more of a circumference than a straight line. Thank God he is not a pilot!
Its just a bad design , lets say you had two 4x4 On a roof. With several feet seperating their ends and you wanted to find the distance between the two .. there would be no way to do it with this device
Does anyone else see the irony of measuring the accuracy of these gadgets with an actual tape measure? Tape measure IS THE STANDARD!
Good thing its not used for construction also it wouldn't be allowed but for a techy user who cares its not marketed to construction or anything
@Toori Baba ye. Never said tech didn't win tho. I was just mentioning that this was not good. Also I dependes on what work you are doing :P
@Toori Baba It's not a tape measure.
@Toori Baba what are you using it for positioning of components based on angular values from a reference? Cause theodolites are seemingly used for precise measurements of angles from large distances with known values of distance.
I also dont see this as "ironic! Because irony is a situation that turns out the opposite of what you would expect based on previous experience.
An absurd example of irony is if you were sitting in a building with a number of other people and a cigarette flipped the top of the building open and pulled you out and smoked you.
Its ironic because theres no real apparent reason for this to happen aside from it being about as impossible as something can be, but when you think about it its exactly the opposite of how it should be, you shouldnt be one among many in a box whose top flips open and then some comparativelt giant being pulls you out of it, lights your head on fire and then sucks you ass until you are nearly entirely consumed and haphazardly tosses you away.
The idea that we would as humans who are even minimally concerend with accuracy in the measurements that we take would check the accuracy and reliability of the instruments, particularly ones of unfamiliar design and of relatively unproven provenance against a known good quantity isnt ironic at all, its exactly what i would expect humans to do based on my previous life experience. Like for example in france i believe there are exemplars of each SI unit of measure that are used to confirm the instruments that confirm the accuracy of other instruments so on and so on.
Theres an entire industry that is dedicated to periodically checking the accuracy of measuring equipment, particularly that which is used in commerce.
I fail to see the irony.
Ya know why I like ya. You’ve seriously done so many reviews that I personally think that during the editing process you’ve learned some serious points to keep. And that’s obvious. But it’s so dialed in that I often watch your whole video. Seems many creators lag... and it’s hard not too. So hats off to ya man. I love your reviews.
I would use this to measure the inside of my trash can.
But why?
@@Petsrme307 I have a round trash can so this would work well.
@@wmonger for bags or something? Don't think I've ever had to measure a trash can
@@Petsrme307 Um... Right now it's just a hobby, but I may make a career of it some day.
@@Petsrme307 because this gadget belongs in there
This is a gadget that doesn't solve any real problem. For rough estimations a program like the one on the iPhone is much quicker and more convenient. For precise measurements it's not really exact enough. The one example of a situation where it could perform better than a regular tape measure was not very convincing. Most tape measures doesn't have a tape as deeply curved as the one used in this video and will easily wrap around that vase.
Then there is the reliance on your ability to draw this in a straight line. Any deviation from that will result in the measurement being longer than it really is. Add to this trying to measure the distance between two points with no surface in between. This gadget simply cant do that.
On top of that the user interface doesn't seem particularly intuitive.
The humble tape measure has been perfected over time and even really cheap ones are incredibly precise and flexible. Pay a bit more and you get better quality steel in the tape and more features. And we're talking useful features that's been developed to solve real world problems and not gimmicks dreamed up because they are cool. And even good quality tape measures cost far less than this.
On the positive side, it's cool and it can measure up to 999 feet in one go... And that's about it.
Yep
Its solving a problem that doesn't exist, nobody ever has complained about how a tape measure is hard to use. There's no need to revolutionize the tape measure, it's like making a shovel that does something gimmicky and entirely cant be used if the battery is dead.
That painting is the best product you've reviewed on this channel. What a gorgeous detailed landscape.
You are such a Legend , i love all your videos with pros and cons and your honest opinion so entertaining and informative
Always the best videos for reviews! Even if its just entertainment for me. :)
For sewing and fashion, this works well by allowing you to follow contours such as seams directly on dress forms. Also good for trueing cured matched seams when making patterns with curved edges such as neck or armholes.
Just have to be very careful to follow a consistent line and not to let go of the damn button. Personally, I'd stick with a traditional tailor's measure
I love how the manual basically says "measure twice with two different tools and cut once." My uncle is a cabinet maker and he does exactly this. He has two tape measures that he uses to measure everything twice, they are internally consistent but not consistent with each other its pretty interesting.
I really enjoy your videos. I have no reason to buy any of these products but love your uploads! Bonus, they don't aggravate me like other videos do. You always do reasonable tests and usually go above and beyond. 🙉
First indication, is the packaging. By the way, your reviews are great. You come across as a normal, competent, every man (person), and intelligent. Your reviews reflect this. To bad you haven't reviewed every thing I might buy. But your getting there.👍
I could see someone potentially using this to measure muscles while at the gym, but not for the price.
For those saying he wasn’t moving in a straight line. He was also coming up with shorter distances. So if he went diagonal thus going further but came up shorter isn’t that actually worse? If he wasn’t moving in a perfectly straight line every time then everything should be higher not lower than the correct value.
Yes
Think of all the poor dads, grandpas, sons, and uncles that have gotten one of these as a gift from a well-meaning but clueless friend/relative. Thinking it would change the way the work completely, and then they just have to smile and say thank you.
Though honestly, all the true engineers and craftsmen I know WOULD appreciate how “neat” of an idea it is, although not practical or exact at all.
Thank you for this review. My brother does carpet and flooring and I think he'd love this. Would make a cool Christmas present
Honestly save yourself some money and his back. Go to a hardware store and buy a measuring wheel.
So grateful for your reviews! I love knowing the facts about these hyped up gadgets. My wallet is fatter because you keep grounded!
Rollova was specifically designed for handymen that eat their steak with a spoon.
Or their candy bars with a knife and fork..
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Plot Twist: Measure King is the most accurate and every measuring tape produced after 2000 has been wrong, but we all use them to measure and so we didn't notice because we were all off the same amount. 0_0
Conspiracy theory:*
Imma need some sauce for that claim
*Nervously compares my pre 2000 tape measure to my modern one.*
Yeah maybe that's be true but it cant even give you the same measurement twice. It's so powerful that it changes the dimensions of objects lmao
Never know... maybe thats why 2020 is so screwed up.
These are great reviews btw very in depth.
Thanks for your great reviews. You are the best reviewer!! If you need to 'roll measure' up to the ceiling, invite your trainer over for a smoothie. He can reach the ceiling for sure.
Considering The price this seems totally useless to me, when you can get a normal one for 5 bucks.
I bet 10/10 carpenters would never use a gadget like this lol
This obviously isn't marketed toward carpenters...
@@FudgyTheWhale_ Nope. It's marketed to millenial idiots who need to try to impress their friends with something that is overpriced and useless garbage. The people who this is marketed to don't actually measure things anyway. They'd just pay someone else to do the measuring for them
Thats where you're wrong buddy... (sorry just always wanted to say that...)
For estimates on how much material you need or how much to charge you need to measure to the nearest foot. (Usually round up too).
Like if I do an estimate of how many linneal feet of trim to get, I will approximately measure room +25%
Labor costs are per linneal foot too, so you never get charged for 250ft and 3in, usually you get charged either 250 Lf or 255 Lf
The idea of it is cool but I rather keep my $80 🤷♀️
Well 75 if you're buying a tape measure lol
I enjoy watching ur videos .. always seems like u are a super confident guy idk why lol but its dope
Old school for me. Great reviews, thanks!
At the end, when James is holding the Measure King and it’s upside down, I just found that so appropriately hilarious when considering the number of inaccuracies the product had in the original review.
baronvg Agree. That was hilarious.
Trying to solve a problem that already has a solution.
Welcome to modern tech
@No one and we'll have flying cars.
Excellent review. Having a woodshop where accurate measurements are critical, I was interested to see how this stacked up. You hit all the points that I thought were needed. My one question for you is on the Measure King tape measure. Does it have a calibration function? It seemed consistent, but also consistently off. So I was wondering if they included a calibration function to adjust it.
I have a digital tape measure that is highly accurate, but it is made by a company known for accuracy - Starrett. They include a reference block (a little piece of metal) that you measure and then adjust the calibration.
thanks James - thorough as always

that's pretty cool, great in depth review....painting is nice to, interesting with the temperature, pretty cool though
very good review. Thank you. I'm a contractor and can tell you, I could never use either one. I need my measurements to be exact. That Measure King really seems to be crap. As for the roll over, sometimes I have to measure over open space, and you can't do that with it. I'll stick to my traditional tape measure.
It's just a really expensive oreo.
That you can't eat
I dont get it.... "pretty close" is not good, man. Imagine taking measurements of tiles or flooring and missing 1/4 inch. That's just not ok.
If you don't notice a large flaw with that item its since its a circle its hard to get in corners. Also. Pretty close is a relative term. If you use them same tool and are accurate with that tool. It will produce the same result unless you are not accurate with the tool you used to measure. With a circular tool its hard to hit corner even with its diameter function.
You also understand the rollover had user error because tape measures can lock up on corners and the rollover can not and can do s's and such
Love the artwork too!
Harbor Freight coupon - free tape measure. I get one almost every time I shop there... plenty on hand. I do have a digital beam measuring tape That I got about 10 years ago. It works okay and about as good as the Measure King thing...maybe better. It is good for measuring rooms and cubic space. If you were a carpet sales person it is accurate enough to price out flooring... Always love the videos. Thanks
honsetly I believe this product is useless, when youre building or doing things that requier to measure and cut pieces to length, it might see mostly accurate but being off slightly will throw your project WAY off in the end. unless they make a more accurate and intelligent one thats easier to handle, its absolutely USELESS, USELESS!!!!!
That’s so aesthetically pleasing
Can't build anything with "pretty close" measurements. Thank you for the review. And temperature restraints?
Cool shades man 👍🏼
James, I have to point out that the diameter of that green vase was different sizes at different points, and you measured on a narrower portion with the measure king’s rolling function... but it gave you a _higher_ number than the others that were measured on the thickest part of the vase, so I have a feeling it would’ve been WAY off 😆
My friend you are a great product reviewer 👍😊
Great for compound radius measurements and 1x3 radius studs. Less wiggle room on the 3/4 side and much more accurate than using a floppy tape measure and the help of at least one other person to keep the contour line on par with lines in larger planes. I am using one on space movies for builds and it’s been used by every person on the sets for all the radius walls and stairs.
Finally new video :)
Keep on rolling baby...you know what time it is!!!!!
The time that you weren't able to save the paper width let me observe its consistency.
When you measured it the second time, the result was identical -- 8 27/64in both times. Nice!
Edit: You just covered all my other thoughts in your summation -- it's good for a rough estimate, but it still won't replace physical instruments.
And $80...holy crap!😀
These videos are so wholesome
How do you measure an open space. Example between two posts?
I so want a review of those space saving vacuum bags !! If u have already I wasn't able to find it .I got few of the roll up kind from dollar store actually held up better then Walmart vacuum bags
Is that my favorite Escher print since childhood I spy on your wall?

Where did you get your measuring tape app for your phone what's it called seems interesting
Wow. And when you’re done with it you place it back into your glasses. Brilliant
When using the string on the Measure King I believe it adds the length of the casing so when you measured the vase and table you went from the end of the string to where the string comes out not to the end of the housing causing it to be too much.
Love the vids
Where did you get your shades
Regular tape measures tend to break when they are dropped from a great enough height, which can and does happen. I wonder how well the Rollova would stand up to dropping
.
This thing is pretty neat. I like it because I'm a gadgets type of guy. I have the measure king and it has a nice distance finder.
Thanks but think I will stick with my free tape for Harbour Frieght Love your reviews!
They should add your voice to the calm app! Besides the amazing reviews, your voice is very calm and relaxing.
Those sunglasses look fire
When does the pretty dependent on me being able to roll it in a very straight line like if you wobble a little that's gonna affect the measurement it gives where's a tape measure I can just walk the tape measure make sure it straight against it and if I've got a little too much again just adjust it
How much times did you have to do a re do because you said rollover rather than rollova
Looks like a fancy digital makeup kit when you first open it.
2 o'clock in the morning and UA-cam thinks I should watch this🤣🤦🏾♂ I say I should do it
really enjoying the videos! personally I don't see the point of measuring if you can't be accurate, but that's just me. I would have included the maximum and minimum temperatures as a con too.
I have my doubts about trying to mark smaller distances to the mm .
It looks cool though
Hmm... It is good for measuring circumference of a circle or round objects, that's for sure.
You know, if they can add like RPM measurement or something, that might be cool, as you can measure a rotating axle and see how fast it spin.
Another thing I think would help a lot is they design a handle, where you can plop the thing in and move the handle along the surface you are measuring. It would be more better.
thanks for the gr8 vids .;.; i bought the can opener you said .; it is gr8 thanks ;.;.
Let's see what else we can measure .... sorry guys for this next thing i have to turn camera off brb
Of you go really fast or really slow, does it effect the measure?
Can’t you use the tape measure with the numbers facing inward to measure the vase?
It's soo cool 😁
Finally a new vid!
Can you do a review on the new as seen on tv garage light? It’s a 3 fold led light fixture
I NEED THIS SOOO BAD.
Oh my, that case is classy.
If only I met you when you came to maui haha that'd be awesome
What if you nees to mark every inch?
What if you need to mark same measure on plywood for straight cut line?
Does it have that hard metal tip so I can indent my wood at the mark?
What if the battery dies?
Construction work will break any fragile or cheap device.
Construction workers are not the most tech savvy.
What if I need to measure empty spaces like width if a door way?
I'm not going to say what I would measure with this tool, excellent review video thank you..
What about comparing against those measuring tools that use lasers?
